Please note that due to the high number of trolls in the past that all comments on any of my videos covering aspects of this subject from now on will be reviewed first, before I allow them to be published.
Thanks for the words of appreciation regarding the videos that I do on this subject John, and for understanding why due to the number of trolls recently that I've had to reluctantly take the step of reviewing any comments first before publishing them.
I have followed your advice and now my family is legally free of the BBC and all live TV in the UK. It is dreadful that it has to get to this, but I refuse any longer to finance the mouthpiece that speaks against my interests.
Hi Nigel, and thanks for your comment. I would never let them into my home without a search warrant and wouldn't advise anyone else to either but there are some people out there who struggle with what they see as 'authority figures' or live in multi occupancy households were it's difficult to get everyone on the same page when it comes to refusing access to TV Licensing employees who can be very devious and aggressive. The information in this video if they wish to follow it provides people in those situations with a fail safe in the event someone in a moment of weakness foolishly lets TV Licensing into their homes. It also puts a stop before they start to accusations developing like the ones in this video. th-cam.com/video/4QnFwLqCQ24/w-d-xo.html
That's fair enough and a good idea but as you say, TVL can be very devious, and there's lots of evidence of them lying to magistrates to get a search warrant granted. I don't really think it matters how far you go to cover yourself legally, if a vindictive goon wants to stitch you up it's very easy for him to do so if he's allowed into your home. Plus those who struggle with such "authority figures" as TVL claim to be, are probably not going to be inclined to defend themselves in a court of law were an evasion charge brought against them. Just my opinion anyway - I think you're providing a public service by warning people against TVL, there's a lot of misinformation on TH-cam but anyone having trouble with TVL or wishing to do away with watching live TV would do well to heed your advice. All the best.
You just need to ignore the letters as Mr H has said and don't let them in by just saying you are not interested like I did, I still get the monthly threat letter but don't even open them and they do not have my name on them so they cannot take a nameless person to court :-D
Unfortunately if you refuse to let them in, occasionally they will lie to obtain a warrant and if they then execute the warrant, enter the premise and find you have the potential to watch live TV you'll likely be prosecuted still. It's unlikely but it has happened to people in the past. Best to be as safe as possible if you don't watch live TV
@@nigeloxley1001 exactly. I really used my tv for the xbox and had pc set up for youtube. This was mid 2000s the guy said all that was fine but then I got a summons saying that my tv was tuned in and even on when they checked. Complete lies.
The only bit of law I know of in this country where your required to prove innocence rather than the prosecution having to prove guilt....and start with a presumption of guilt for everyone.
Yes. But on the BBC you don't have to watch mind numbing ads., I don't like paying for Government propoganda just look at how they treat Corbyn. Bias, bias, bias.
It's not the BBC that are demanding the fee it's the government. It's just another form of taxation. It wasn't that long ago you also had to pay a license fee for a dog or radio as well.
I am legally licence free, they pestered me for a couple of years, I ignored their letters, a tv license inspector came round I let him in and showed him my coax cable wasn’t plugged in, hay presto he was satisfied and went away. If you don’t watch live tv then you don’t need a license.
As i have said in other videos, surely the BBC should be able to ask you if you would require BBC programming before you pay for your licence. If you say no, they block your property from recieving BBC channels and if you want them on, they simply ask you to pay your licence and flip a switch (as sky do if you don't pay your bill) and it's back on. Then they know every property that is recieving tv broadcasts are either licenced to watch BBC, or not recieving the BBC programmes. Would be alot more simpler and saves them getting their goons out.
but after they'd turned off your BBC programming they'd still charge you a licence fee. It's not a fee to watch the BBC it's a fee to watch any live TV. It's a stealth tax. They view you as a tax evader if you remove your aerial, someone that's using a 'loophole' to get out of paying the TV licence. If they were more honest they could just say it's a tax on watching any form of video at all in your home. Equally indefensible.
A good presentation. What you can also touch upon is what streaming services people can use such as ITV hub, Amazon Prime, Netflix, etc where a TV licence isn't required unless you are watching live broadcasts on these services.
DO THE SAME AS I DID - STOP WATCHING LIVE TV - THEN YOU DO NOT NEED A BBC LICENCE - WHEN THEY KNOCK ON YOUR DOOR - THE FIRST THING THEY WILL SAY IS - ARE YOU MR MRS BLAB BLAB - YOU ASK THEM WHO WANTS TO KNOW - IF THEY WILL NOT ANSWER YOU THEN CLOSE YOUR DOOR AND IGNORE THE CALLER - IF THEY SAY - I AM FROM THE BBC - CLOSE YOUR DOOR AND IGNORE THEM -
I'm about to go licence free and someone said to me that because I have the BBC iPlayer app on my sat box I still need a licence. I told them the iPlayer app is hard coded onto my sat box so it can't be removed and that in order to use the iPlayer you need to sign in using a code provided by the BBC so as long as I don't sign in then it should be fine. What do you think ?
Thanks R.E.H Fan, glad that you enjoyed the video and some of your friends may find the information useful. I predict a lot more TV Licence cancellations post April as £150.50 per year is starting to look like a lot of money to most people.
What gets me is that the license is only for watching BBC programmes live or on catch-up. You don't need a license to watch ITV. The BBC should have the ability to prevent broadcast to your property if you don't want to watch their shit, demanding money for something without giving the option to secede from their service is fraudulent. That's the same as demanding money for a driving license when you don't drive.
Although the bulk of the TV Licence fee goes to the BBC, Sundaydish1 one is still required to watch television broadcasts 'live' in the UK irrespective of if you are watching the BBC or ITV. I will agree that this is wrong but that is the way the law is currently written at present I'm afraid.
Sundaydish1 I like your thinking, but they'd never implement prevention technology because their case for the licence fee increases is based on audience figures. Therefore it would be against their interests to block people. Plus, how would they brainwash you?
You take a look through the book, BBC BRAINWASHING BRITAIN, by David Sedgwick before you believe anything the leftist media says or does. This book explains how the main media change the narrative to suit the agenda of the left, usually owned by rich moguls or in the case of the BBC by us the viewers, but its content is globalist propaganda Most mainstream media have an agenda that has nothing to do with bringing you news. The BBC tops this and as we pay the billions for this lying business WE SHOULD NOT BE lied to suit their politics This book explains the tactics used and how to check it out! One idea, when you watch a news item from the main news balance it with the same news on youtube.
Thanks Mr H. I followed your instructions which were very clear. It helped that I have the same TV!! I am in the process of cancelling my TV licence and genuinely don't want to watch any live TV. I have also uninstalled iPlayer from all my devices. Doing this has made me feel more relaxed about cancelling. Cheers.
That’s all very well and good, and I can understand how it can be achieved... with a tv. However, my understanding is that the BBC can argue that if you have a computer or a smart-phone/device, you can tune in to television broadcasts through that medium. Can you comment/elaborate on this? Thanks.
Why on earth would you consider vandalising your equipment by cutting wires etc? What if you decide you want to go back to watching tv? You'd have to re-solder an end back onto your cable and/or mess about with re-wiring a terminal etc. a de-tuned TV should be enough to show you don't watch live TV. In actuality, this isn't even necessary as TVL paperwork refers to "If you watch" not "if you can receive", although I can understand people wanting to safeguard themselves as much as possible; but the burden of proof is on them. Not you. They have to prove you watch live TV. If they can't do that, that's fine.
Hi RobJTeasdale, there is no soldering involved with AV connectors as you simply strip back the outer sheath of the coax and then screw the connector back on. It's the same with the wall plate only the connections to the coax are held to the plate by two small screws. The process can easily be reversed in about 15 minutes by a good DIY person and that is why I advised coiling the coax to the aerial up with cable ties rather than cutting it flush with the wall in the event that people doing this ever decide to return to watching 'live' TV. I personally really went to town by completely removing the TV aerial and satellite dish from my property along with the associated cables. That was over four years ago now and the thought of returning back to the crap that is on TV these days and paying for the privilege has never crossed my mind.
why would anyone want to go back to watching TV? I've been legally license free since '99, wouldn't go back to watching that rubbish even if they paid me. Last TVL man that visited me was offered the antenna free to keep if he wanted it, he tried to buffalo his way in so I tried to bully him up a ladder!
STOP WATCHING LIVE TV - THEN YOU DO NOT NEED A BBC LICENCE - WHEN THEY KNOCK ON YOUR DOOR - THE FIRST THING THEY WILL SAY IS - ARE YOU MR MRS BLAB BLAB - YOU ASK THEM WHO WANTS TO KNOW - IF THEY WILL NOT ANSWER YOU THEN CLOSE YOUR DOOR AND IGNORE THE CALLER - IF THEY SAY - I AM FROM THE BBC - CLOSE YOUR DOOR AND IGNORE THEM -
What did you do about the threatening letters of court action, bailiffs, and £1000 fines? Same as ive been getting and I ended up paying the license direct debit.
ALSO - IF YOU DO ANSWER THE DOOR - STOP WATCHING LIVE TV - THEN YOU DO NOT NEED A BBC LICENCE - WHEN THEY KNOCK ON YOUR DOOR - THE FIRST THING THEY WILL SAY IS - ARE YOU MR MRS BLAB BLAB - YOU ASK THEM WHO WANTS TO KNOW - IF THEY WILL NOT ANSWER YOU THEN CLOSE YOUR DOOR AND IGNORE THE CALLER - IF THEY SAY - I AM FROM THE BBC - CLOSE YOUR DOOR AND IGNORE THEM -
My Tv has BOTH teine Freesat tunners and normal Ariel tunner built In. So if I completely remove and pack away both 3 cables this is fine? .what about internet raidio?
Great video Mr H. Recently bought a house with my partner, I've now taken your advice by snipping my TV aerial cable and covering the source with a blanking plate. We've not moved into the house yet and are still sorting it but we've received two goon letters so far. We don't watch live TV broadcasts and we never will, looking forward to our first visit......hope they like our front door.
And that is accepted by your authorities? In germany we had a similar licence fee on tv and radio receivers, which I always refused to pay since I didn't own any of those. Of course we also had sneaky creeps spying and trying to register one's equipment and force people to pay. Then, since so many people evaded that system, our government came up with a "better" idea: We now have a MANDATORY LICENCE FEE PER HOUSEHOLD, regardless of the presence of any tv, radio or other equipment. If you ask how that could happen: Politicians argued that nowdays everybody has smartphones, tablet-PCs and the likes and all of those can and will receive tv and radio content. The reality, however, is this: There are lots of well paying "jobs" (no actual work involved) especially in the top management of the state-owned tv and radio stations that the elite politicians distribute to useless lower-level politicians in exchange for favours (example: favourable votes) they once depended on. Yes, thats germany for you.
You can legally watch any catch up service EXCEPT the TV iPlayer but you can legally listen to any BBC radio station and of course non BBC radio stations on your TV. Likewise you don't need a licence to recieve streaming services if they are not streamed live. I use Netflix, Amazon TV and You Tube. Plus I have my own Plex server with 1000s of movies and TV box sets on, but as they are on my home network no licence is required.
Indeed you can John, however regards listening to BBC radio stations through your TV I would personally recommend buying a cheap DAB radio or listening to radio through a computer type device rather than listening through your TV.
@@MrHsHotPot I do have DAB. I was pointing out the stupidity of the regulations. I have the radio iPlayer app on my tablet which doesn't require a licence as you know. I prefer listening to radio 4 as the drama on it has better pictures than TV 🤣
Cancelled my TV licence a month ago already had two letters asking to set up a direct debit. But I'm waiting for the knock on the door un which I'm ready for.
My Ariel blew off during the recent storm but I still have a satellite dish attached to my house as well as wireless internet. Does this prevent me from being able to stop paying for a TV licence? I've always had a licence but haven't watched any BBC programmes for years. I resent paying for a service I don't want.
100% agree with this comment Martyn, 👏 if Branson were to lose a few million of his customers that voted Leave back in 2016 he would soon learn to either change his tune or keep his political opinions to himself.
@@MrHsHotPot exactly and note even though I'm on the right he is also interfering in a lousy BUT democratically elected govt in Venuzula! He is another unelected Soros imo
Check to see if you have spare (excess) cable in the wall socket or outside the wall. If you don't have spare cable it may be better to unscrew the arial lead than snip it before covering it with a blanking plate - that way should you ever want to reconnect it you won't need to splice in a new piece of cable.
As I've said elsewhere; it would be a huge market winner for any firm producing TV's that block the BBC and do all that you list and marketed these sets as Legally exempt from the licence fee. There'd be nothing the BBC or our useless politicians could do-they'd be pushed into a corner and (at long long last) they'd have to seriously re think the whole licence fee issue (rather than play lip service to complaints about it whist coming out with guff about what a bargain it is (just £150 a year for something you don't want!) If we're forced to have a public TV channel-why the hugely expensive and unwatched 24 hour news channel ? Why hundreds of local radio stations ? Why all the internet ? And if the MP's were daft enough to outlaw the legally exempt TV, the backlash would see them squirming. As it is I haven't bothered with a TV or licence for over 10 years. £1500 in my pocket and I've not missed the BBC at all !
I think the idea of a device being on the market that only has the capability for non licensable activities is a great idea and it would probably sell well, especially in the Legally Licence Free community Infrasleep. It would also probably encourage even more people to cancel their TV Licence than are doing so at present as it would eliminate all the confusion regarding what is and isn't allowed under the current TV Licensing rules. So the idea definitely gets a thumbs up from me! 👍

It's a great idea but I can't see the big japanese or korean brands doing it just for the UK and even then just a tiny minority of people who care enough to seek one out.
I still fail to understand how these people still get away with this utter scam. For yrs I've been appalled at the crazy reverse logic that ALL UK households MUST automatically possess a TV set or (probably more relevantly now) other "receiving devices", plainly insinuating that NOT watching TV is weird, and that therefore those without any licence on record are automatically assumed to be: 1) criminally evading the fee, or if not, 2)irrespective of any personal declarations that the said licencing is not, or is no longer, legally required, their suspicious minds still send hired personnel 'round to "check" !?!? What I'd like to know is have any of these clowns been known to search someone's house top to bottom like forensic investigators (because a few vids here on YT show these thugs in someone's living room clustered around a single receiving television set, seemingly obsessed with proving it shows pretty pictures) but ultimately I hear no-one subsequently demand to check for examples on the long list of alternative devices potentially scattered around modern households (and what about in cars??) - devices that are equally capable of "receiving", but so what? Does possessing these items actually prove anything? Unless these salesmen physically witness you mid-programme, none of this proves in the slightest that anyone is "watching" and any conviction in court has got to be because people were supremely dumb enough to be seen doing so!! You can watch as much video/DVDs, YT etc. as you like, guys! The perceived crime is "watching" . Even a tuned-in set connected to an aerial fails to prove anything, especially if the unit's Off, and there's no retrospective way of checking, say, that you've watched EastEnders live a 1/2 hour ago cause TV detectors don't exist! Consider your Little Jimmy might well be in his bedroom secretly watching live broadcasting (horrors!) on phone, laptop, or tablet, BUT to me, since you have to go into the internet, Login to the BBC website and "Stream" (I'm assuming that's the term, it's "Play" to us Luddites) to do so, I therefore maintain it doesn't follow the definition of "live" since it's several seconds behind and totally different from receiving TV progs through an aerial from a conventional broadcast transmitter. Your Little Susie might have had a friend legally record an episode of a fave prog and she's catching up with it on her bedroom TV set - all perfectly legal, no lic required. Plus, people until recently were happily watching their programmes after-the-fact on iPlayer plus other Catch Up avenues until that particular loophole was closed down (no doubt to drum up the lost revenue!). The licence fee is collected to fund BBC and only the BBC. No contributions are made to any of the other commercial channels, yet they have the nerve to say it's for the privilege of watching ANY channel. In anyone else's definition this would be fraud, like collecting for multiple charities and only giving to one....dishonest. But watching ITV or any other non-BBC Catch Up channel does NOT require a licence. It makes absolutely no sense at all. TVL's archaic form of highway robbery will have to cease eventually, but you know the Beeb will be kicking and screaming all the way.
But what if you listen to the radio channels through the TV? I have an LG set and need to have the aerial connected to get them so your solution won't apply to me. I know what you might say listen online but I like the 5.1 surround sound of the TV when it is on.
Hi Dean, although perfectly legal I personally do not recommend that people listen to the radio either through their TV aerial or their satellite dish, as it puts them as the householder in the awkward position of having to defend themselves and prove a negative that they are not also watching 'live' TV rather than the other way round if it ever it came to it, as their equipment is unfortunately configured in exactly the same way to listen to radio as it is to watch live TV. If you have enough confidence to feel that you can cast 'reasonable doubt' in the minds of the Magistrates who usually side with these scum in the rare event that you should ever have to defend yourself in court that you have not been watching live TV when your equipment is in effect configured to do exactly that, then without sounding flippant the very best of luck to you.
Oh! I like a fight, especially where any authority is concerned. I listen to away matches of my local football team and it is set to that channel for any time I switch to antenna the local radio station on channel 720
Lol. No worries Dean, you are obviously clued up enough and you know your own set of circumstances better than I do. This video was made as advice in general really rather than trying to be the definitive answer for everyone. I'm not really a big fan of the radio TBH and have a cheap little DAB Radio for the odd fix every now and then so I don't feel the loss of the radio side of the BBC iPlayer like you probably would.
Dean Stockton The offence is in having the television installed, not actually using it. If it's plugged into both mains socket and antenna, it's installed. Wouldn't matter if you never watched TV, wouldn't matter if the screen faced the wall and the set was screwed to the floor, wouldn't matter if the entire house was "de-energised" by the power company, the TV is installed. You might be able to win that fight in court, but you'll still end up in court and I wouldn't like to bet on the outcome either way.
Dean Stockton I also listen to DAB radio on my TV, which is currently in an unlicensed premises. This is perfectly legal. If I am challenged in court (because to tune into DAB currently requires theTV to be programmed into ALL digital services) I will need to hear PROOF that I have watched TV before accepting any fine. I just hope the magistrate is similarly scientifically minded. If not, they should be, and should throw out of court any claim that is not substantiated by evidence.
Buy a monitor, they don't have tuners. But they have jacks to hook up to other items, such as dvd players, pc's etc. It legally isn't a TV then, it's a pc monitor.
Hi Paul, you can legally watch all other catch up services on any device except the BBC iPlayer without a valid TV Licence, even the ones from TV stations abroad. Radio stations including BBC services are NOT covered by the TV Licence which means that technically you can legally listen to them through your TV set connected to an aerial, although I personally advise against doing this. Please note that there is no legal requirement for anyone without a valid TV Licence to alter their AV equipment in any way so that it cannot receive a 'live' broadcast and many people choose not to out of principle. This video is mainly a practical demonstration for those wishing to alter their equipment so that it can't reicive a 'live' broadcast if they so wish rather than claiming to be the definitive answer to becoming Legally Licence Free (LLF).
Mr H's Hot Pot Thanks very much for your reply. My license is due for renewal in July, I shall look into this further. Excellent channel, I’ve also subbed!👍🏻
Hi Paul, no problem regards the reply. I'm glad that you have found the information in this video useful in helping you to make a decision regarding going Legally Licence Free (LLF). Thanks also for the kind words about my channel and for the sub. All the best. 👍
Paul B you can do that yes it's only live tv so you can watch catch-up tv you can record programmes and watch them later! You can phone BBC licensing and tell them you are not needing a tv licence anymore as all you watch is catch-up tv you can go online and do the same think! This lasts 2 years and you might get a visit from them, don't let them into your house, just tell them you have phoned up and explained things and will be doing this for the foreseeable future! My son has no tv licence all he done was phoned them and everything is good, if he can do it so can you, he has a learning disability! Best of luck to you all!
You don't need to do it. TV licensing haven't the legal right to come in your home to check. Just tell their goons to get stuffed if they come knocking.
You really are a little treasure showing us this! I don’t know how to block the iplayer from my router but I guess I can figure it out! If not I shall be back asking how! 😜
Hi Sally, glad you enjoyed the video.👍 Reference blocking iPlayer at the router unfortunately due to amount and differing types of routers currently out there it is impossible for me to make a universal 'one size fits all' How to.... video on how to do this. As I'm personally not interested in any BBC dross including radio and websites which are legal to use without a TV Licence so it was a lot easier for me to just put a blanket block on BBC services via the router. But some things you can try if you wish to tailor the amount of BBC access your devices have to the internet is to use the routers 'Parental Control' feature if it has one and 'Block Keywords/Domain Names' which is a feature even the most basic routers have.
@@MrHsHotPot You do not need to block I Player or anything else just follow there rules and you are good to go. Simply fill in the form, keep the email as proof, and instantly you do not need to do anything else. It matters not that the equipment is capable of receiving they need to catch you with their own eyes breaking their rules....You don’t need a TV Licence if you: never watch or record programmes on any channel as they’re being shown on TV or live on an online TV service, and never download or watch BBC programmes on iPlayer - live, catch up or on demand. This could be on any device, including a TV, desktop computer, laptop, mobile phone, tablet, games console, digital box or DVD/VHS recorder.....www.tvlicensing.co.uk/check-if-you-need-one/topics/telling-us-you-dont-need-a-tv-licence
Hi Sally, open a comman prompt (windows icon bottom left corner, select run then type "cmd" and hit return). a new window will open with black background. Type "Ipconfig" and hit return. Look for Default gateway for example 192.168.0.1. Open a web browser, and type the numbers into the search field. sign in using the admin username and password (hopefully you've changed the default which is normally admin/admin). Once signed in go to Parent Controls and enter in new site which will be blocked by router. Good luck.
I have a smart tv,so even tho it has an ariel, that ive taken away,it still pickd up live tv from my router, how do I turn that off?basically Mr H,i cant stop my tv giving me the option to watch live tv,but I don't use it,so im not paying for something I don't us,but its just a click away, where do I stand?thankyou.
I assume that you use other features on your smart TV that are non licensable such as Netflix therefore simply removing the routers password from the smart TV to make it a standalone device is not an option? If this is the case then at least block the BBC at the router using the routers settings. If you still want to use ITV Hub, All4. Five etc. for catch up only (which you are perfectly entitled to do) then you may have to experiment with your routers settings to block the live feeds. Obviously due to the sheer number of routers on the market I cannot give you a definitive guide on how to do this other than trial and error.
www.tvlicensing.co.uk/check-if-you-need-one/topics/telling-us-you-dont-need-a-tv-licence.........You don’t need a TV Licence if you: never watch or record programmes on any channel as they’re being shown on TV or live on an online TV service, and never download or watch BBC programmes on iPlayer - live, catch up or on demand. This could be on any device, including a TV, desktop computer, laptop, mobile phone, tablet, games console, digital box or DVD/VHS recorder.
the issue now is smart tv's with the pre installed non removable bbc iplayer app......the bbc made sure they are the first app you ever see, its blatant.....also how do you get around not receiving bbc if you have a sky box?.....cheers .
Yeah I've also noticed that the BBC iPlayer app is always the first app that you see on pre loaded devices. Reference not receiving the BBC on a Sky Box I don't see the point of trying to block the BBC channels on such a device as you still need a valid TV Licence to watch or record 'live' from all the rest of the channels as the law currently stands.
Just cos an apparatus CAN receive does not mean it is being watched !!! The TV licence is for watching TV, not owning one, and proving that anyone is watching TV is bloody impossible !!!
If you have the internet, whether it's for a pc, laptop or only a phone, you can still access live tv. You can watch iPlayer radio without a licence, according to the official youtube tv license videos, or own a tv just for games etc, but the problem is how you prove you don't watch anything else whilst online. You can't. The bbc tv licence third party working out licences would need to apply to your net provider to find out what you watch, by accessing your internet history. Live news channels available on tv, are also accessible on youtube and other services, and more will likely appear in future. The bbc licence is not a tv licence but a 'live broadcast licence', although if they start to concentrate on other devices than televisions for inspection, some might eventually see it as an 'internet licence' until it is abolished and finally becomes a tax. Some Euro countries already do this.
If I’m only using my TV to play Video Games and SVOD, do I still need to follow the same processes as I know that the law does not extend via Internet.
Just to clear up a misconception...the TV licence is not solely for BBC channels, although the BBC do get the majority from a third party, that third party is Arqiva, who own the complete telecommunications infrastructure in the UK, it is there that the license fee goes, Google it, and make sure you are covered from all sides.
I would like more information about this ARC licence the BBC have... it costs £7.50 per year... my property is allowed to have an ARC licence however due to my landlords inability to keep my postcode area only to elderly and disabled people, the Licencing people have now put in a preserved right scheme, which means that anyone moving in after 2009 have to pay for a full licence... I find this so unfair, but neither my landlord or the licensing people will budge. In my block of 4 flats with a communal aerial two pay £7.50 per year and the other two, myself included, have to pay full fee... I am now licence free and after a rather nasty phone call, I have removed their implied right of access, until they applogise I don't see anyone and since 2013 still have not had an apology or had an attempted visit.
If you rent your property then cutting the cable from the back of the wall socket might annoy your landlord or mean you have the extra expense of restoring the cable if you move out of the property.
On most modern models of TV's it's just as easy to 'factory reset' as deleting the channels, but whatever works for you mate. You must also bear in mind that there is no legal obligation on anyone without a valid TV Licence to modify their AV equipment in any way so that it cannot receive 'live' broadcasts. this is just a practical demonstration for those who wish to do so as I've been asked this a number of times on some of my other TV Licence related videos.
Mr H's Hot Pot I know that but I was just thinking about other settings that would be wiped like aspect ratio and audio settings etc... ... as my STB is also a dvd player wiping all would mean having to set them up again.
Mr H's Hot Pot Is it illegal to (having deleted all tv channels) use a DTV box for radio stations over TV channels as you wouldn't need a TVL for radio otherwise. The main advantage being an EPG (Electronic Program Guide) which helps a person to better coordinate their listening. As radio stations aren't "Shown on TV" at all (non-visual), would that exempt them from the license?
Listening to the radio through your TV set is perfectly legal without a TV Licence although I personally wouldn't use this method to listen to the radio as it puts you in a tricky position should a Goon accuse you of evasion as it wouldn't take much to retune the TV to receive broadcasts as well as radio and this is the argument TV Licensing's prosecution team would put forward to a Magistrate. Be under no illusion that these scumbags wouldn't bring a prosecution on such flimsy evidence because they have tried and probably successfully prosecuted people on less evidence in the past.
Of course technically speaking it is sufficient to just turn the TV set off and never use it, even if connected to an aerial. The problem with that, as you identify, is the fact that TV Licensing would infer that the set had been in use. It would then fall to the occupier to offer some alternative explanation to the court (e.g. radio use only etc).
In an ideal world people wouldn't need to Goon proof their equipment tvlicensingblog, as their word would be enough but as we know with these sneaky commission hungry salespeople it's always best to er on the side of caution and leave nothing to chance. 😉 Here's a copy of a video which I'm sure you've probably seen before starring veteran Goon Phil Carvill which illustrates perfectly TV Licensing's logic when it comes to equipment that hasn't been Goon proofed. th-cam.com/video/4QnFwLqCQ24/w-d-xo.html
the offence is having the set installed, you can commit that offence without using it, they don't need to infer use, they just need to prove you installed it. S363(1) "A television receiver must not be installed or used..." It could be difficult for them to prove YOU installed it as opposed to it being installed by some faceless installer from a random tv shop back when you last had a license and you just haven't got around to uninstalling it, but if it's installed at all you're on shaky ground.
Some of the modern smart TVs need to have the Arial plugged in just to run the menu system. If this is the case on your machine, select a country other than the UK on install, and the tv will do its scan, but not install UK stations. It's important to do this since if your TV thinks it's in Kenya, not even the cleverest goon will be able to get a UK signal out of it.
A good, informative video showing how to Legally avoid using the BBC live broadcasts and thereby LEGALLY not being required to have a TV licence. (Personally, I enjoy BBC TV and other broadcast services and, for me, £150 a year is good value; but I respect the rights of others who genuinely don't use these services to not have to pay for the licence).
Very good advice Mr H I'm also LLF and have no interest in being a customer of the boring broadcasting corporation.. There's more entertainment on Netflix and it's considerably cheaper per year too. I have no doubt your friend will be fully informed of what to expect from any goon that calls.
Good effort but the way they twist the law is that if you have a computer, tablet or smartphone, they claim you have the ability to watch TV, and I suspect they would say your changes are all reversible. Your best bet is to remove the right of access to your property from them so they can't check. It really is an antiquated law now.
If you have previously held a TV license and there is record and or evidence of this but now you do not wish to have one and there is such a situation where TV goons manage to gain access say via police or of such, Do you legally have to have all those previous channels de-tuned (un-tuned) even altough your ariel is clearly unplugged? (they may find the tv channels after themselves plugging in the unplugged ariel after inspection)
Another great video Mr H. :-) However, perhaps an opportunity for another video to follow up? Many Smart TV's now use WiFi internet connection in order to access the catch-up services, or Apps. Some of those Apps have live content, IF it's selected to view. What would you advise those folk to do with Smart TV's connected to the internet? i.e. to avoid a worst case scenario, whereby a warrant is granted, perhaps falsely, and an inspection is unavoidable. Or, since it's a case of proving whether or not live content has been viewed or recorded, if neither of those has taken place, should those people therefore have nothing to worry about? Cheers!
I'd like to see proof of it being illegal to have equipment capable of receiving live TV. IINM, the law is about actually watching/recording live TV or using iPlayer (live or catch up) irrespective of the device being used, and nothing to do with the capability of any equipment. Perhaps your advice is wise due to the likelihood of being incorrectly convicted, but that's not the same as it being the law/illegal.
Hello Mr H I love your accent . You sound just like the late great Fred Dibnah who was from Bolton ! Also Lancashire Hot Pot a great delicious culinary invention that Lancashire gave to the rest of the UK and the world !
Im a gamer so i dont use the tv, at my last address back before everything went digital I tried to use the tv Arial cable but my tv didnt receive a signal it was far to snowy as they call it here. I literally could not receive a tv picture, I had a visit from the tv people so i let them in to show them my gaming rig is set up in living room and tv wasnt plugged in neither was the Arial at the time. They just wanted to see that I received no signal and they would leave. I showed them and a few days later I got a letter through my post saying I need to buy a tv licence....Ive never let a single one in after that, they would be lucky if i even answer the door.
Interesting video... Here in Denmark, the TV license has been "smartly" changed to a "media license" TV, Internet and Mobiles all require us to pay 2500kr (About 230£) a year to Danmarks Radio (BBC equivalent) even though we don't watch it... :(
I thought the Danish Government had announced that the Danish equivalent of the TV Licence would be scrapped as of 1st of January 2019? Are you saying they are going to replace it with a blanket 'Media Licence' similar to the German model?

I can see this happening in the UK. As I was about to make myself an account on iPlayer I thought how easy it would be to put in my details and effectively sign an admission that I am watching BBC content online.
@ It accepts made up email addresses. Your account can literally be Username: FuckTheBBC Email: FuckTheBBC@FuckTheBBC Password: FuckTheBBC Gender: Helicopter
Mr Shakespeare did exactly this yet by a living miracle the BBC's One Show logo 'magically' appeared on the tv set. No, not at the time of Ian Doyle's invasive home visit but AFTERWARDS!
Indeed Demolition guy, Mr Shakespeare v's TV Licencing is a very intriguing story for those interested in seeing just what BBC/TV Licensing/Crapita are REALLY capable of and how low they will sink to secure a conviction. Good to see someone noticing my little nod to Mr Shakespeare in this video. 😉
Why dont you just ring and let them know dont wont your custom like i did and they told me they will b in touch in 2 to see if i have changed my mine not a problem
According to the tv license website, it’s perfectly legal to listen to bbc radio stations on your tv. So surely if you don’t pay your license, and they were to come in your house and check, then you have a valid reason why you have an aerial plugged in?
I have a smart tv which enables access to bbc iplayer app( which is pre installed). So technically my tv has the ability to recieve so where would i stand with that in court if they got a warrant as i can not unistall it? Just to add , im not too concerned as i just shut the door on the goons.
Hi Mr Johnson, that is why at the end of the video I recommend blocking the BBC iPlayer at your router to cover smart enabled TV's. Unfortunately as there are that many different types of router out there it would be impossible for me to practically demonstrate how do this in a video but you could try using the 'Parental Control' feature on your router if you have that capability or blocking certain 'Keywords/Domain names' that the BBC iPlayer uses if it doesn't. Taking these simple steps would be enough to cast 'reasonable doubt' on TV Licensing's claim that you had been illegally using the BBC iPlayer through your TV in the unlikely event that you ever found yourself on the receiving end of a malicious prosecution by them.
You raise a very good point there Mr Sooty, personally I'd already stopped using the BBC iPlayer long before the change in the law in September 2016 to bring it under the TV Licence so I'm not up to speed with any changes that they've made since then so thanks for the info.👍
i just want a good internet provider, as i really dont watch tv. im not remotely interested in tv or the radio.. i occasionally watch netflix.. i was going to get virgin media just for the internet.. what would you reccomend as i need a good internet service..
@Mr H's Hot Pot - ok that's fine as it goes, but what if you don't have an aerial or dish? I receive my TV via a Virgin Media cable box. I have Virgin Media fibre optic cable for the TV, telephone landline and very fast broadband internet access. How do I access services on my TV like TH-cam etc. How do I delete the live TV broadcast section whilst keeping other services like TH-cam access etc.?
If you have a smart TV, it should come with the ability to watch youtube. If not, you can buy a mini pc, hook up your tablet to your tv, gaming consoles have the TH-cam app, etc. BUT if you pay a subscription for Virgin media TV package and the box is hooked up to your TV, do not let the TVL in. There are "other" sources to watch all that rubbish on Virgin media. But if your Virgin media package excludes TV, nothing to worry about. My advice, if you have completed your contact with Virgin, keep the broadband and phone and get rid of the TV package. Google every programe you watch and see how easy you can watch it online for free. Mind you, some sources are not legal, keep that in mind. Good luck.
Thank you for the interesting video if you was only in the house I wouldn’t need a TV licence as every think would go through on the Amazon fire TV and obviously not download the BBC iPlayer app.
No problem Lee, glad that you found the video interesting and maybe useful. 👍 At least Amazon Fire like NowTV give you the option to remove the BBC iPlayer app sadly, many devices do not.
Pretty sure they state that any equipment CAPABLE of receiving live tv is covered so this would not be enough. You would have to remove the tuner card or buy a monitor !!

Always easy with you checking out any replies I put in . Thanks for what you do here on this subject.
Thanks for the words of appreciation regarding the videos that I do on this subject John, and for understanding why due to the number of trolls recently that I've had to reluctantly take the step of reviewing any comments first before publishing them.
Just don't pay it. Simple.
I have followed your advice and now my family is legally free of the BBC and all live TV in the UK. It is dreadful that it has to get to this, but I refuse any longer to finance the mouthpiece that speaks against my interests.
They can't do anything if your not breaking the law .No law for having a TV to watch you tube or Netflix.
Mr. H., you and ChilliJonCarne are the best on how to not pay the BBC licence fee. Support you both 100%! Keep up the good work.
I understand why you're doing this but it's pointless. No need to do any of this. Just don't let them in.
Unfortunately if you refuse to let them in, occasionally they will lie to obtain a warrant and if they then execute the warrant, enter the premise and find you have the potential to watch live TV
you'll likely be prosecuted still.
Yep. It's a diabolically twisted bit 'o logic, ain't it? The onus is on you. Guilty until proven innocent. Unbelievable.
Choppington Otter There are others.
I think it is wrong that the BBC demads a licence fee when the other channels suport themselves and do not get any money from the licence fee!!!
Bob Wareham that’s we’re the government should step in and ban it. If I were a politician it’s the first thing I would do.
it's called the BBC gravy train - it's backed by the gouvernment as a propaganda tool
Bullshit
Dean Griffin
You would think so wouldn’t you Dean? However, can you imagine how much money they’d lose?
Great idea for us, not for them, because no one would opt to view BBC.
We haven't had tv license in Australia since the 70s. Didn't know it was still a thing.
viperfo someone has to pay for their grossly inflated salaries and gold plated pensions!
A good presentation. What you can also touch upon is what streaming services people can use such as ITV hub, Amazon Prime, Netflix, etc where a TV licence isn't required unless you are watching live broadcasts on these services.
How do you disable the live feature on itvx More4 and Demand5?
i cancelled mine as my new years resolution - i feel sooooo cleansed - bring on the goons
DO THE SAME AS I DID - STOP WATCHING LIVE TV - THEN YOU DO NOT NEED A BBC LICENCE - WHEN THEY KNOCK ON YOUR DOOR - THE FIRST THING THEY WILL SAY IS - ARE YOU MR MRS BLAB BLAB - YOU ASK THEM WHO WANTS TO KNOW - IF THEY WILL NOT ANSWER YOU THEN CLOSE YOUR DOOR AND IGNORE THE CALLER - IF THEY SAY - I AM FROM THE BBC - CLOSE YOUR DOOR AND IGNORE THEM -
What was the outcome
Informative and to the point Mr H. Thanks
Another top notch vid Mr H, I've had quite a few friends of mine asking me this as they can't justify the licence fee increase.
Thanks R.E.H Fan, glad that you enjoyed the video and some of your friends may find the information useful. I predict a lot more TV Licence cancellations post April as £150.50 per year is starting to look like a lot of money to most people.
Simple, easy to understand advice. Obvoiusly do the same for any recorders that also contain streaming ability. Many thanks for the channel Mr. H.
Sundaydish1
I like your thinking, but they'd never implement prevention technology because their case for the licence fee increases is based on audience figures. Therefore it would be against their interests to block people. Plus, how would they brainwash you?
You need a TV license even if you watch live french TV on your PC any live broadcast even if it's outside the Uk requires a License
They can its called encryption....and they can password protect their BBC web site....but then no free money

Cheers.
Thanks for the info on detuning the TV, have heard this mentioned but didn't know how to do it. Already cancelled my licence!
Does this work for smart 4K TVs?

It's more fun telling them to piss off and slamming the door in their goon faces.
done it and ....yes those simple steps work - FACT
What did you do about the threatening letters of court action, bailiffs, and £1000 fines? Same as ive been getting and I ended up paying the license direct debit.

Whats the sneaky was to disable it without cutting cables and removing plugs.
Impeccable addition at the beginning !!!!!!!!
So what about if the TV has bbc I player installed in its factory settings
Cancelled my TV licence a month ago already had two letters asking to set up a direct debit. But I'm waiting for the knock on the door un which I'm ready for.
My Ariel blew off during the recent storm but I still have a satellite dish attached to my house as well as wireless internet. Does this prevent me from being able to stop paying for a TV licence? I've always had a licence but haven't watched any BBC programmes for years. I resent paying for a service I don't want.
My tv ariel fell off and i never replaced it so I cancelled my licence
It also time if your for Brexit to dump the tax exile Branson and his virgin brands
@@MrHsHotPot Guess what? Branson's had to declare his Virgin Line bankrupt in the US

Yes, agreed....I dumped Virgin Media when he shot his gob off over Brexit.
Check to see if you have spare (excess) cable in the wall socket or outside the wall. If you don't have spare cable it may be better to unscrew the arial lead than snip it before covering it with a blanking plate - that way should you ever want to reconnect it you won't need to splice in a new piece of cable.
I just bought two Rotweilers and two Dobermanns and let the garden be their home. No visits yet 🙂
Great video big H!
For yrs I've been appalled at the crazy reverse logic that ALL UK households MUST automatically possess a TV set or (probably more relevantly now) other "receiving devices", plainly insinuating that NOT watching TV is weird, and that therefore those without any licence on record are automatically assumed to be:
1) criminally evading the fee, or if not, 2)irrespective of any personal declarations that the said licencing is not, or is no longer, legally required, their suspicious minds still send hired personnel 'round to "check" !?!?
TVL's archaic form of highway robbery will have to cease eventually, but you know the Beeb will be kicking and screaming all the way.
because nobody sticks up for one another like what else is new
Thanks for your video. What do you use your tv for then?
What about the NOW TV Box dont we need a coaxial cable for that?
Hi Brad, a NowTV box connects to the internet via the Wi-Fi signal on your router and does not need a coaxial cable to connect.
If I do all of this, can I watch itv catchup and all the other catchup stations from my iPad, also can I still legally listen to the radio?
It matters not that the equipment is capable of receiving they need to catch you with their own eyes breaking their rules....You don’t need a TV Licence if you:
never watch or record programmes on any channel as they’re being shown on TV or live on an online TV service, and
never download or watch BBC programmes on iPlayer - live, catch up or on demand.
Good luck.
Err . . and what about the PC linked to the Internet, through which I have the ability to watch live TV?
TV from the Internet is not live TV
Your "smart" TV spies on you just like Alexa etc.
www.tvlicensing.co.uk/check-if-you-need-one/topics/telling-us-you-dont-need-a-tv-licence.........You don’t need a TV Licence if you:
never watch or record programmes on any channel as they’re being shown on TV or live on an online TV service, and
never download or watch BBC programmes on iPlayer - live, catch up or on demand.
If you have a smart TV and can use the BBC iPlayer, would you be in breach of their rules, even if you disabled the iPlayer app?
Clear and simple step by step explanation, well don son
Is it really necessary to lose the connection? I haven’t watched tv in a year but have TH-cam linked through my satellite receiver to the tv.
What about if you’re renting your property? Can’t go cutting cables.
If I’m only using my TV to play Video Games and SVOD, do I still need to follow the same processes as I know that the law does not extend via Internet.
Thank u very much
Just to clear up a misconception...the TV licence is not solely for BBC channels, although the BBC do get the majority from a third party, that third party is Arqiva, who own the complete telecommunications infrastructure in the UK, it is there that the license fee goes, Google it, and make sure you are covered from all sides.
It's a bit overkill to 'factory reset' if you can just delete the channels instead.
Mr H's Hot Pot
Is it illegal to (having deleted all tv channels) use a DTV box for radio stations over TV channels as you wouldn't need a TVL for radio otherwise.
Why bother if you have disconnected the aerial, you cannot recieve broadcasts, therefore no need for any licence.
Whats up with the volume/.
Better off getting a large PC monitor , they do not have a built in tuner , but have inputs to do what you want
Consolidated Rebel Associated Productions! Brilliant! :-)
One question...is it true that they can still fine you if they find a laptop or a smartphone in your house? Should they come in with a search warrant?
If you do this, you won't be able to watch the catch up services or apps legal without a license, will you?
Another great video Mr H. :-)
However, perhaps an opportunity for another video to follow up?
Many Smart TV's now use WiFi internet connection in order to access the catch-up services, or Apps. Some of those Apps have live content, IF it's selected to view. What would you advise those folk to do with Smart TV's connected to the internet? i.e. to avoid a worst case scenario, whereby a warrant is granted, perhaps falsely, and an inspection is unavoidable. Or, since it's a case of proving whether or not live content has been viewed or recorded, if neither of those has taken place, should those people therefore have nothing to worry about? Cheers!
I'd love an answer to that as well.
Hi can I just remove the ariel from the TV and bin it or do I still have to put the TV back factory setting ?
both, factory setting returns the tv to out of the box status. If you don't use the factory setting the channels are still programmed in the tv.
So what happens if you just use Netflix on a smart tv ? Surely it needs tuning ?
Mr hotpot does this still apply to todays date ? 🙂
I'd like to see proof of it being illegal to have equipment capable of receiving live TV. IINM, the law is about actually watching/recording live TV or using iPlayer (live or catch up) irrespective of the device being used, and nothing to do with the capability of any equipment.
Perhaps your advice is wise due to the likelihood of being incorrectly convicted, but that's not the same as it being the law/illegal.
read the communications act 2003 and all the amendments included. have fun.
What if you are with sky or virgin. You can still watch catch-up TV but not the BBC player.
i wonder if we could have a set top box or card in our tvs that could block bbc....
Hello Mr H
I love your accent .
You sound just like the late great Fred Dibnah who was from Bolton !
Also Lancashire Hot Pot a great delicious culinary invention that Lancashire gave to the rest of the UK and the world !
Wait... So the license fee is for BBC channels, but I still cannot watch other channels, like E4...etc?
Just search for new channels instead if the aerial is out it won't find any
Don't forget, you should really inform the licensing authority that you no longer require a licence.
Here in Denmark, the TV license has been "smartly" changed to a "media license"
TV, Internet and Mobiles all require us to pay 2500kr (About 230£) a year to Danmarks Radio (BBC equivalent) even though we don't watch it...
:(
I thought the Danish Government had announced that the Danish equivalent of the TV Licence would be scrapped as of 1st of January 2019? Are you saying they are going to replace it with a blanket 'Media Licence' similar to the German model?
I can see this happening in the UK. As I was about to make myself an account on iPlayer I thought how easy it would be to put in my details and effectively sign an admission that I am watching BBC content online.
@ It accepts made up email addresses. Your account can literally be
Username: FuckTheBBC
Email: FuckTheBBC@FuckTheBBC
Password: FuckTheBBC
Gender: Helicopter
Please stop giving HM Gov ideas !!!
Well if it does happen they need to provide free wi fi and free mobiles
Do you need a licence for watching itv+1 c4+1 etc ? As technicaly it isnt live tv
is it legal to detune the bbc channel and listen and watch the other channels
Why not just reset when they come to check and unplug just asking I live in the USA so we don't have any of the stuff here
Thank you sir you are a scholar and a legend
Mr Shakespeare did exactly this yet by a living miracle the BBC's One Show logo 'magically' appeared on the tv set. No, not at the time of Ian Doyle's invasive home visit but AFTERWARDS!
Indeed Demolition guy, Mr Shakespeare v's TV Licencing is a very intriguing story for those interested in seeing just what BBC/TV Licensing/Crapita are REALLY capable of and how low they will sink to secure a conviction. Good to see someone noticing my little nod to Mr Shakespeare in this video. 😉
Great help for total peace of mind. Not everyone has the courage to confront a Licence Goon.
Thanks for taking the time to comment Byron Elenica, this is exactly why I made this video. 👍
Also i dont ever use it only netflix and amazon prime
Yeh but since september 2017 you must sign in or register to watch I player.
so IMO ,unless you have(signed in or registered) to view it no problems
You raise a very good point there Mr Sooty, personally I'd already stopped using the BBC iPlayer long before the change in the law in September 2016 to bring it under the TV Licence so I'm not up to speed with any changes that they've made since then so thanks for the info.👍
I'm on about watching online on Laptop or Computer ,my mistake.
What about all the channels you don’t need a licence for and catch-up?
i just want a good internet provider, as i really dont watch tv. im not remotely interested in tv or the radio.. i occasionally watch netflix.. i was going to get virgin media just for the internet.. what would you reccomend as i need a good internet service..
I have a question please.
I was told that I needed a tv licence because I have DAB radio in my car? As daft as that sounds.
Is it true?
Hi Who Are We, I think whoever told you that was pulling your leg as the requirement for a licence to have a radio in your car was scrapped in 1971. 😉
NO no need for a licence to listen to any radio !!!
Who here is from the US watching this?
You take a look through the book, BBC BRAINWASHING BRITAIN, by David Sedgwick before you believe anything the leftist media says or does.
This book explains how the main media change the narrative to suit the agenda of the left, usually owned by rich moguls or in the case of the BBC by us the viewers, but its content is globalist propaganda
Most mainstream media have an agenda that has nothing to do with bringing you news. The BBC tops this and as we pay the billions for this lying business WE SHOULD NOT BE lied to suit their politics
This book explains the tactics used and how to check it out!
One idea, when you watch a news item from the main news balance it with the same news on youtube.
Pretty sure they state that any equipment CAPABLE of receiving live tv is covered so this would not be enough. You would have to remove the tuner card or buy a monitor !!
