FFXIV 1.0 Ishgard - The City-State That Never Was | RoaR

  • In this episode of RoaR we're taking a look at Ishgard and how it was presented in 1.0 as well as how it changed with ARR. Ishgard was a place of wonder and mystery in the early days of XIV, and players speculated if the Gates of Judgement would open through a patch. Alas the game was terrible, and the gates remained closed... until HW.

i mean, i get what you say but "the world outlawed us" is kinda false given that only Ul'dah ever saw us as "villains"and even there only a select few actualy knew of it. Gridania and Limsas Leaders still supported us

A guy who owed us a favour let us crash at his dad’s place, it’s not like the entire city welcomed us with open arms. The majority of its citizens were arseholes and we were constantly treated like shit, all while having to solve all their problems entirely by ourselves.

The endless snow in 2.0 made Ishgard seem forbidden and lost. Aurum Vale and Dzemael Darkhold made it seem hostile. Steps of Faith made it seem dangerous.
But... Heavensward made it feel like home... and later... tragic

This hits different upon the revelation that the original plan in 1.0 was to have 6, not 3, city-states: The three we have, Ishgard, Ala Mhigo, and Old Sharlayan.

I went through my own similar experience, although I never got the 1.0 time everyone else did.
I started in the final days of the Starlight 2014 event, only six short months before Heavensward would release. But in that time, before June of 2015, I had my own little adventure of discovery regarding Coerthas. At some point I began wondering what these Cascadier Vouchers were for, and the only information I was able to gain was that they were exchanged in a place called Mor Dhona for a swimsuit. All I could learn of the geography was that Mor Dhona was north of the Shroud.
So I set off, an Archer barely into her Level 20s, to go exploring. I snuck by banemites, snuck by bombs, got lost in the western area of North Shroud, and finally found the entryway into what I thought would be Mor Dhona.
Instead, I discovered Coerthas Central Highlands. With a blizzard making it impossible to see, wind biting my face, and the choir and organ of the day theme Fealty kicking in, chills ran down my spine. I knew immediately I was in an endgame area, and with the snows being kicked up and a map with no data I had no idea where I was or where I needed to go. So I did the only thing I could do: move forward.
As I followed the path past the Observatorium and up Haldrath's March, the blizzard began to clear and I could see it clearly: Camp Dragonhead. Having been attacked by gators and goobbues on my way through, it was a welcome sight. Unfortunately, after attuning to the aetheyte and going even further north, I found myself at a dead end near the remains of the Steel Vigil. But after going up the cliff west of the Vigil, a beautiful sight came into view that I won't ever forget: Ishgard.
It made learning that I could have taken an immediate left at the Shroud - Coerthas entrace to reach Mor Dhona more than worth it. I wish I'd had the presence of mind to take a screenshot to commemorate the moment, because it's one of my favorite memories of my early days.

Ishgard still remains my favorite city state, the architecture is simply astonishing and I have taken so many screenshots of it and still find myself return there every now and then, just to take more screenshots, haha
When it snows at night, there is this certain air of melancholy looming over the city and it makes me feel nostalgic, even though it hasn't been that long since I started playing FFXIV and went through Heavensward (which was my favorite expansion by far).
I sincerely hope that once the Restoration of the Holy See of ishgard is successful, we will be getting Ishgard housing. I would give my everything to be allowed to live there! I will hold off of buying expensive glamour and hoard Gil like crazy and then pray to Halone I will be fast enough to purchase a plot there...
Is it just me or did Ishgard kinda look...weird in 1.0? From a distance, for almost the entire time of the video I thought that it was just a gray model with no textures attached to it, but when the camera zoomed closer on it, I realized the roofs actually have color, but its hardly indistinguishable (what a word) from the rest of Ishgard.
For me, as a non 1.0 player, seeing Coerthas not being covered in snow is so weird, you have no idea. As an avid fan of snow areas in games, I'm happy that they decided to cover it in snow, hah! I know that a lot of people prefer the 1.0 Coerthas, though. Shame that the 1.0 "server" doesn't have any monsters, I would've loved to see how dangerous it was to pass through there as a low level.
I think my favorite moment in the video is where 1.0 Lukile fades into 2.0 Lukile, looking over the Holy See from a distance. The comparison between the two and seeing how the map barely changed is really neat. It also shows how smol Lukile grew up to be a fine young man.
Thank you for the amazing video as usual! Looking forward to SoaR, whenever that's gonna come out

If anything, I've played several hours of XIV close to an engineer friend. Explained to him an abridged abridged version of whatever I could (he has no interest in MMOs) and... his highest praise went to Ishgardian architecture. Consistently. Both in the overworld and in the odd few times roulettes threw me on Ishgardian trials.

Wrong usage -- " but it's hardly indistinguishable" -- Not that it's incorrect grammar to say it that way. It's actually fine. Where you went awry is what you were intending to explain versus what you actually stated. In your post you were of course explaining how Ishgard was more drab in comparison to it's current state in the game. Obviously, by that context, the reader can tell that you were going into the situation looking for and expecting distinction of color and detail, hence your surprise. We all know what you're intending to convey, of course. However, from an analytical stand point "but it's hardly indistinguishable" would be wrong to say because it technically implies that being indistinguishable is the trait you were expecting and looking for in the city model but you found that it was, in fact, "hardly indistinguishable" or to put it another way "mostly distinguishable". The right way would have been "but it's hardly distinguishable" or perhaps, "but it's practically indistinguishable"... man I'm an ass. xD

I fiercely love the lore of this game, especially when it comes to my favourite place, Ishgard. That you are able to show us and tell us the tale of 1.0 Ishgard and coerthas makes me so happy since I was not there to see it. I especially love seeing the before and after of the calamity; when you read the FATEs and MSQ and all the extras along the way you can see the impact of a world forever changed by snow, and the strong residents who persisted through it all. So it’s very elucidating to see what it was before the change. Thank you so much for this video ❤️

Your adventures from 1.0 to the current game bring tears to my eyes, they are so incredibly relatable (I've experienced similar shifts in other MMOs, but sadly only joined FFXIV after SB had been released. @CeilingNinja 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

The Ishgard bridge is a weird example of the discord between canonical sizes of things and in-game sizes. The size of some of the settlements in the game, and even the city-states, would be unsustainable with regards to population and size. There are simply too few people to live in these places, those settlements would collapse. But to put the populations in actual size, you'd have to make the maps humongous. Limsa Lominsa would have to be the size of the entire map of La Noscea to make sense, La Noscea would be enormous. It'd take hours to travel the world, tens of minutes to travel between quest locations. The developers definitely shrink things down to make it playable, and usually expand the size of the duties (Wanderer's Palace, for example, would overlap other portions of La Noscea if it were as big outside as it is inside.)
The Ishgard bridge turns this on its head, rather than being much larger in the duty than it is in the outside game, it's smaller than it should be. It feels like it should be the last of the bridges between Ishgard and Coerthas, but then Stone and Steel Vigil would be much further away than they are... so it messes up all that.

i didn't so much 'find it' as was pointed in that direction due to the MSQ in ARR, as I started in 2.0 (2.2 to be exact).
my first thought? "Why are the people here assholes?", but as I worked through the story line and the NPCs started warming up to the WoL I found my self not disliking them like I did at the start.
and then all the stuff at the end of 2.0 happened and the place grew on me more. currently, my character's head cannon has her living in the Holy See when not out and about dealing with what ever major problem that's popped up this week, for much the same reason as despite what the game says, she's canonically a Dark Knight now as well. the end of 2.55.
as for the first time i entered >.> the awe of 'finally being in Ishgard' was lost on me due to me being on a mission to hunt down Fray and get my Claymore and become a Dark Knight. That said it's my favorite of the City States by a WIDE margin these days and give how long people have been asking for housing there I'm clearly not alone in that.

My first job to 50 in 1.0 was dragoon, so my first time down the furline and into coerthas was at level 30 for the job quest. FFXIV was my first mmo, and I was absolutely petrified when I zoned in. Between the ambiance and the melancholic music, I just knew certain death awaited me. I was such a noob at the game that I’m almost positive I didn’t have my chocobo yet lmao. After many, many deaths and getting my bearings in the game though, coerthas became one of my favorite 1.0 zones. I still get sentimental when I hear unspoken. I’m also a little sad how much it’s changed and how little of it we now have access to. Maybe one day the sun will shine down on the highlands and melt the eternal winter.

I think the map is so much smaller because the highlands collapsed into the lowlands during the calamity. Which is the general explanation for most of the zones.

Then after starting I learned not only how the job system worked….but that McH would only be available after i reached Foundation. Basically i wound up doing like 95% of post-ARR (pre-revamp) in a single weekend so I could finally get MCH lol. Was a neat feeling to finally get into the city and make a bee-line for the Manufactory lol.

Though Ishgard is cold, her people are warm! They welcomed us when they heard our plight! They allowed us to take shelter and in return we helped end the Dragonsong war.

New player here. I didn't start playing until months after this video was made. Realm Reborn had its ups and downs for me. I actually considered quitting during the post Ultima weapon 100 quest chain. But the very instant I passed under those gates into Ishgard, I was enthralled and have stuck with the game ever since.

If you view the Steps of Faith duty in a map viewer or OOB outside, you can see the last overworld style section of the bridge still remains behind the final gate. The landmasses are also still there, the playable bridge is just placed higher than the overworld version is.

When I first played ARR, it was fun and the story was amazing. When Heavensward released, it multiplied that feeling substantially. The music is gorgeous, the size is astounding, the story is the best out of any Final Fantasy I’ve played. When helping new people through ARR, I always tell them to watch the cutscenes in Heavensward. This expansion made me cry twice with how truly wonderful the story is, and I would recommend everyone to play through it instead of getting a story jumping potion.

I only started playing during 2.0 but the allure of Ishgard was inescapable even for me. I remember standing out on a certain ridge overlooking the city the night before the expansion was to launch. Standing arm and arm with my friends, free company and many other adventurers still strangers to me. Yet all of us were there for the same reason, feeling the same anticipation, waiting for the gates to open at last. New expansions are a special thing which represent both an ending and a new beginning. Shadowbringers hype!

My friend and I had our first experience with XIV in 2015 when we gave the 14-day trial a shot. I was chugging along soaking up the lore and reading everything I could get my hands on (yes even those walls of text from the guild receptionists that explain how they interact with each other), while my friend was busy seeing what high level things he could sprint past to get to higher level areas. After one of those adventures he started yelling in excitement and demanded I follow him, and that's how we ended up in the Coerthas Central Highlands way earlier than we should have. I remember us creeping up the path to the Observatorium, with a few higher-level people nearby casually keeping an eye on us to make sure we didn't explode. Eventually we got to safety, and proceeded to discover that you can't die from fall damage out of combat, via jumping off the top of the Observatorium for kicks. I don't think we ever got far enough north to see Ishgard, but the memory of finding that snowy landscape and messing around by repeatedly climbing up and jumping off the Observatorium is still the strongest and fondest memory I have of that original time we spent in the game. After our trial time expired I didn't come back until mid 2017, but I've been here ever since and Ishgard/Coerthas still remains my favorite city/region in the game. ♥

This is what i love about the FFXIV community, all of us higher lvl players that happen to be in lower level areas will casually keep an eye out on lower level/new players doing their quests. If shit hits the fan we come running in to kill.

I see the differences in The Steps of Faith as just accomodation for gameplay purposes. Even in 1.0 where the zones may have been larger and more numerous, they are still only *representations* of this fictional world, not anything that is absolute. It's the same as when the screen whites out and you enter a random battle in a classic turn-based RPG, the condensed overworld view giving way to a more expansive-looking backdrop for a battle scene taking place in an area that looks similar to where you were just a moment ago. A different representation of the world, to suit the situation.

watching this reminds me again how I really hate the eternal snow that is Coerthas, & how I really miss their own greener pasture. The area was back then kinda haunting, but beautiful. I also miss Owl's Nest, which used to located at far eastern of Coerthas, tho I think the area are making a return as one of Frontline stages. I also still vividly remember the cave about northeast from camp Dragonhead that serves as entry point to Garuda fight, cave still exist nowadays, tho they now houses regular FATE instead.
Also, kinda bummer that this vid didn't try to explore content inside 1.0 Ishgard, tho I recall probably already saw old stream that glitched his/her way inside & I think it's basically unfinished render of it. Kinda forgot or unsure tho. The only memories I have left is few pics I've taken, including one of em posing as full DRG AF. ;)

As for Ala Mhigo, would it be possible for the Devs to add it in as a city-state in a future expansion?

If they do it would maybe be something along the lines of a reconstruction effort similar to the upcoming Ishgard reconstruction, or even the Doman Enclave. Guess we have the Ala Mhigan Quarter, but it leaves a bit to be desired. But who knows, by the time we return from the First, things could be more developed, or in ruin. We did see some development happening at the Saltry as you move through 4.1 - 4.5

I remember /really/ hating Coerthas as I played through ARR (joined the day before Heavensward dropped). Mostly because of the snow. There was so. Much. Freaking. Snow. But when I climbed up Providence Point to see what was up there, I was honestly floored by the presence of Ishgard looming in the distance. Even now, four years later, Ishgard remains as home in my heart, because I know that it will always be there to welcome me in when the world turns against me.
