Nice Video. But the part about cost saving is just not true. The material costs savings are insignificant. This three part design has two advantages: a wider range of graphics card compatibility and not heating up the copper by components that don't need a lot of cooling.
If you think about it, this three part design is even more expensive to produce, because the assembly takes longer which is the main cost factor.
But I am happy that you still like the block even with the overhang ;)

Holy crap how did you guys find my little ol channel. If your taking suggestions, can you guys include 4 little nuts that work with the stock screws for the end of the pcb overhang? That way XC3 buyers will feel like it’s a more complete product when they get extra mounting nuts for their evga backplates

@@jockegw there's a few posts on reddit, you can look it up if you want, but to sum it up: EK designed the block based on the reference card, but this card uses much shorter chokes, so the block does not make contact with them at all (theres about a 5mm gap). Not a terrible thing, since chokes do not require active cooling. But again, it was advertised as cooling them.

Just on my XC3 ULTRA stock air cooler I got up to 1,950MHz and I added 150MHz to my vram. I hit 5,186 pts in MSi Kombuster benchmark at 1440p. Just for fun. I only gained 5 fps from all that. And I ran my fans at 70% (2,450 rpm). It really isn't worth it. If I were to gain an extra 200MHz from a $145 water block and flashing the bios to the 450watt FTW3 it wouldn't be worth it.
I would have to shunt mod, waterblock and bios flash to FTW3 for a TOTAL of 10-15 fps gain in benchmarks and gaming. Then it'd be worth it.

I like to watch your product tests and reviews, I find them very helpfull but don't you think it is time to move on to 1440p at least. 1080p era is over, those cards (3080/3090) are specifically made for +2k gaming, mostly for 4k and most of us will use it for that purpose(4k). Your benchs doesn't help us to get an idea about 2k & 4k resolution performance. We don't get to see the full thermals performance under 1080p cause the card doesn't need to pull full wattage for 1080p resolution. This is like having a Ferrari engine in a VW Bug. :-)

Would be cool if you can make a little guide about that. (E.g where to place, thickness of the pads,...) Thx a lot and keep going :)
Edit: I am surprised that EVGA is so lax with the pads after the "debacle" with the GTX 1080

  • @okpoobi

This waterblock looks cheap in person, and also a flow rate killer. This thing is super restrictive. Getting 12C delta T with my 3090. Also, backplate does not make good contact with thermalpad once installed, thermalpad for backplate should be thicker. Returning and getting the EK block...

Yet another rushed product, and not particularly well thought out, manufactured in an effort to maximise profits before anyone else produced a similar product.
What do you believe the results would be if this gpu was manufactured using the TSMC 7nm node. Firstly, if the gpu would overclock and to what frequency, secondly, what the TDP would be also on this 7nm node. I am attempting to gauge the benefit of changing from Samsung as there is a lot of noise on the web that Nvidia is changing to TSMC sometime in early 2021.

Sure run it at those voltages for a few years and see where it gets you. The cards are volt limited for a reason you know, doing this to break benchmarks is one thing doing this for every day use is just asking for a dead card within two years if not shorter. Just face facts, 8N Samsung node is awful and Nvidia should of just bit the bullet and gone with TSMC but their ego got the better of them. These cards are great performers already, whilst also being terribly inefficient. Those benchmarks AMD showed off at their event puts RDNA2 within 5% of a 3080 at 4K and we don't even know if that was their highest card and they are on a much more efficient 7nm TSMC node. Couple this with the 3000 series being probably the worst launched GPU in history, basically a paper launch, Nvidia chose to use their top die for the 3080 which hasn't happened in a long time, they chose to price competitively, we have the whole POSCAP fiasco, and now AIB's scalping their own cards to rip off the consumer, oh and drivers needed to fix crashing issues above 2GHz.......... This is AMD's time to bring back some competition and take some market share, if they screw this up they may as well stop making GPU's.
