    What a lovely piece. The colours work very well together and give the piece a natural coloured look. Well done.

    Nice to see you back Martin and especially with a project video.
    Got to say that looks very nice, especially like it that you have some natural wood in there as fully coloured would be an over kill.
    I think the reason the Green and Purple on the bird works so well is because of the small blue area between them plus they are such vibrant florescent colours.
    Well done!

    • @msabansmith
      @msabansmith  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Paul. Thank you. I don't think there are any awful colour combos in nature - the difficulty is in replicating them. Thankfully, this worked out. And yeah, full colour on this would be rather overbearing.
      Hope you are well,
      Martin

    It looks like forest at this point. After you allowed first cost of Danish oil dry. Really was sensational

    Great piece Martin. Must have been some tense moments when using the 3” vacuum chuck but it seems all turned out well. Thanks for the new video. I hope there are more to come. Regards, Dan Healy

    • @msabansmith
      @msabansmith  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Cheers, Dan. The 3" chuck did a great job, but not 100% because of the size of the piece. I always play it safe and turn the lathe down with slightly iffy things like this. The rpm went down to 260 when the tailstock was taken away. And, I made sure I was out of the way at all times.

    I suppose one of the lessons on this piece is to keep sharp tools away from the finished part of the work?

    Great to see you back. Lovely platter and fun playing with the colours. Didn't they pop when the sheen went on. Love the in video sharpening.

    • @msabansmith
      @msabansmith  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi John. Thank you. Yeah, the oil and sealer really bring the colours out, and the sheen just livens it up so much. :-)
      Thanks for watching.

    Great video Martin, great come back too...I’ve lost count of the Oopps moments LOL.
    Fab colours and was thinking about the centre being pearlescent red just like the eye of that bird, that would really stand out...
    I wonder how many turners have the plan in their head but gets changed as you cut away the wood.??…I would think 90% end up different in a small way...anyhoo, great job and well done 👍🏼😊

    • @msabansmith
      @msabansmith  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Marc. Thanks for watching. A couple of Oops moments, especially when the piece was dinked.
      I don't always have a plan in mind, but the colours in this were fixed, and the piece chosen was perfect for it as the figure looks a bit like feathers.

      M. Saban Smith Woodturning I couldn’t agree more, the ripples are really beautiful...and the colours by your good self need no introduction...
      Keep them coming my friend 👍🏼😊😉

    Martin, that is an amazing platter, thanks for sharing. I've bought Hampshire Sheen for an ash platter I'm making as a wedding gift so i want it to look amazing. But...I can't get rid of the sanding marks and it's mostly end grain.... Any advice??

  • @JimGriec0
    @JimGriec0 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hello Martin. I have been watching all your coloring videos and I have noticed (unless I am wrong) that sometimes you use sanding sealer first before the oil and sometimes after or maybe both. What are the reasons for this? Thanks

  • @robbrown6667
    @robbrown6667 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Martin, glad to see you back. I have a question for you. What is that rectangular piece that is on the end of your tail stock holding the piece against the drive screw? How is held onto to the tail stock? Thanks, Rob

    • @msabansmith
      @msabansmith  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Rob. Thanks for watching and asking. The piece of wood on the tail stock is just a small bit of sycamore to stop the live centre marking the piece with its point. It's held on there by the point only. So it's nothing special and cheap as chips!

      Thanks for the fast reply! It helps me for some upcoming work I have to get on soon!

    Martin, very nice platter. I am not a fan of coloring but I must say this project turned out quite well. I think you did that bird justice. I like your on going comments as they are very informative. However I don't care much for the music. Not so much the content but the volume. Please think "background". When I set my volume so that your rather soft voice is pleasing and audible the music booms out. Very disconcerting. Also I think you skip over too much of the sanding. Yes sanding is boring but it is an important part of the finish. I only ask that you include enough sanding so that I can see your technique. It's enough to see the first grit and then just state that you went on through "xx" grits. I am looking forward to your next video. It would be great if, one day, you could find your way to the Atlanta area of the USA.

    • @msabansmith
      @msabansmith  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Glen. Thanks for watching and your comment. I think I'll have to do a sanding video as my technique is perhaps a little different to others. I can't put it into every video though. One this is for certain - your sanding must be spotless for good colouring!
      Music might be a little loud on this one - I'm a little out of practice as I've not posted a full video for months now. Will tone it down on the next one.
      Colouring wood isn't to everyone's taste, so I thank you for your open mind and not lambasting me like some other, less open minded people do. Lol.
      Have a great night.
      Martin
