Trying out some Hampshire Sheen Embellishing Wax I forgot I had on some Irish Ash

  • Putting colour on wood is something I very rarely do and I happened to find some Hampshire Sheen Embellishing Wax that I had forgotten about on a shelf in the workshop so decided to try it out. It is a wax I have never used before and since it is made by Martin Saban Smith ‪@msabansmith‬ it has to be good. In the end i felt it was a matter of personal preference to colour wood or not.

Wood turning can be a dangerous hobby. My videos show my methods of turning and if you do not feel comfortable with my methods please do not copy them but rather use a method you feel comfortable using. Your safety is your responsibility as is the safety in your workshop. Enjoy the videos, hopefully something inspires you or helps you along the way. Irish woodturning is a craft that is dying out and should be preserved so that the tradition of Wood turning in Ireland stays alive and well.

That was so interesting. I agonise how to use products, check Martin’s videos, forget the next time and get it wrong again. Personally, I think it looked lovely 🌞

Before this video I would have said 'no colour' but I really like that. especially ash which can have lovely grain but still be quite plain. I may have to invest!

Hey Shay, when I've used it in the past on Ash, I've sprayed the piece with black ebonising spray then applied the wax as a layer. Then when it's set I use quite a hard pressure on cloth to take most of it off. The remains tend to be in the soft grain giving a stripe effect

I have a hard time with coloring wood too. I like what I see but when I try to do it I'm never happy. I think Ash is a perfect wood for color because there is a lot of it. Great show thank you.

I love the blue but don’t care for the burnt part. As long as you learned something and it didn’t cost anything or draw blood, I’d call it a win.

  • @SilverBack.

Shay the bowl looks Great, well done

I have used Martins products with mostly success. When using the colours, you need to apply liberally and leave to dry for a few hours before buffing it off with the highest safe speed available. Some heat needs to be generated.

Great effort shay bowl looks great 👍 😊

    Very nice, Love it.

I like the blue, I agree with your wife. It is a lovely piece. 😊 I have dyed some ash, but I used Savonol powder dye and some denatured alcohol when it was dry I lightly sanded it then applied my Acks polishing restoring pate. I didn't get to keep it lol my daughter stole it.

I like what you came out with. When I’ve used the embellishing wax, I’ve either done a deep burn of the surface and brushed out the suet, or I’ve textured the surface. Either way I’ve then apply the colored wax to fill in the lower areas.

I normally wire brush the soft grain followed by a coat of black stain or scorch the whole of the outside then wire brush it. I prefer copper or gold of HS embellishing wax to lift the grain.

Interesting! I've seen some great embellished (not necessarily Hampshire Sheen) turnings. Apparently it takes a bit of a knack. I've not been satisfied with any of my coloring experiments. Overall, I think colored turnings are very niche. Great video, though!

Hi Shay, To be honest when it comes to turned pieces of wood I prefer the natural look. When I do flat work I might use light stains to enhance the grain but other than that I still prefer natural. The bowl itself is a beautiful bowl but I’m the fence about the color. Take care, Wayne

  • @alansmith477

Have you ever thought of using it on a Christmas tree?

  • @GaryGlass-DriftwoodTurner

Interesting experiment Shay. Ive had no luck using embellishing wax myself, not sure why. I prefer natural colour of wood but as you know better than me some woods scream out for some colour, so there's a time and a place for it, I don't think that piece of ash needed it.

  • @ronkiskowoodart9680

If you really don’t like it send it off to me lol. I think some wood is excellent for colouring , ash, birch some maple but generally I prefer au natural.

  • @WoodenItBeNice

Hi Shay, Sitting firmly on the fence on this one.

  • @garyjohnson9297

After your second aplication it still looked splotchy . Still a nice bowl though not a fan of pigmented wax, but maybe it is was applied to a more close grained timber
