Finally - I rediscover what I knew 50 years ago and forgot when someone borrowed my I Ching and never returned it. This is the best explanation I have seen so far.
The I Ching can best be understood when we consult it because we have a deep need. It replies on the level of our deepest feelings. By contrast, when we only approach it with our intellect, we are on a different wave length, and that is when we find it hard to understand. I hope you find this helpful. - Hanna
Fully agree. In fact, you could open the I Ching book randomly, and when in deep need, still find wise guidance in a random hexagram. That is why having the I Ching in your smartphone as an ebook or an app makes it so handy to receive the guidance from the I Ching in the moment when you are in need
By all means, the ebook or app does not replace the traditional method and ritual, but it is a useful add-on to help face our challenges in the modern world. Thanks Hanna for the clarity in your video!
Interestingly enough...I got the same hexagram (32). I used this video to learn how to do a proper reading and for my very first I Ching message- I recieved 32 (Duration). It is of course a very relevant message for me to have received at this time. So serendipitous. I'm really thankful and in awe of the universe and all it's little magical synchronicities.
I am very grateful for the i Ching. To consult it I don't use coins, I just open to book to a random page and take the diagram there. Simple but intuitive for me.
I found your I Ching books as some of the most clearest explanations in English that I have ever seen. Someone who can really unlock the inner meaning of the 'I'. How can I repay you ever for doing this? Thanks, your books are so clearly explained like muddy water that has been given time to settle, now I can see my face through its side again. Very good work and service.
thank you! I consulted this video when i first bought the book, and revisited it just now to refresh my memory! The book has helped reassure and clarify so many things for me as well as others
You can get to the hexagram that way, but you still need to determine, whether any of the six lines is a "changing line" that contains a more specific answer to your question or issue of concern. Every I Ching book contains additional texts pertaining to the changing lines. You can experiment with your one-coin method: to find out whether you are meant to read any of the changing lines, define one side of your coin as yes, the other as No. Then throw the coin again checking each line. Hanna
@ LordShivasServant I know exactly what I Ching calculator you are talking about. I was introduced to the I Ching 2 years ago the coming December. Being introduced to the I Ching for the first time, many people find stuff like this on the web and think this is the way the I Ching works. I have come to learn that this is not the case. The I Ching is very personally and only for you. Buy the book and let the Sage talk to you. You really will find the the nourishment, caring and love you seek!
A simpler way to calculate is this without numbers. MINORITY RULES METHOD-> 2 heads 1 tail = Yin -> 2 tails 1 head = Yang -> all 3 same face = moving line or Old Yin and Old Yang.
You are very correct about the I Ching presentation, I started learning I Ching when I was in high school. Without the guidance of a teacher, it is difficult to understand the mysteries of the Book of Changes. It can be said that: The Book of Changes is a summary of the laws of the universe, and you can ask any questions on it. Fortune-telling is very simple, but how to solve the hexagram image is very difficult.
@clickswitchh My advice is to not try to understand it with your mind, but rather see what in the hexagram (or paragraph from a hexagram) that seems particularly relevant (maybe it is only one sentence in a paragraph) and that resonates with you. If you have our book, it describes how you can then investigate further whether you are on the right track in understanding it. Our method allows you to develop a greater understanding.
I quite agree about exploring the relevant meaning. Our book "I Ching, The Oracle of the Cosmic Way" contains a unique method of communicating with the Sage, the voice that speaks through the I Ching. With the help of this method the user can put forth hypotheses re the intended message and receive Yes/No answers in the manner of 'warm,' 'hot,' or 'cold,' 'very cold.' Have you tried it out? - Hanna
Unfortunately, the sticks are no longer being produced. However, you can use a die instead. It is called a "hexagram die" and can be obtained through our website. Look for: ichingoracle. Hanna
Funny, was my first time doing it, asked a question and draw and hexagram...got a number with a change in 5th line. Just for fun thought of doing same question twice..Got the same number AGAIN! With no changes, wow.
I am probably missing many things including a few marbles... but yes I am missing all the items in your list. At present I am waiting for my library of books to be shipped to me, which includes a copy of the I Ching translated by Thomas Cleary. However that version is quite bare-bones. I also have a copy translated by James Legge in 1882, which is quite good. That has helped clear up some things, but I will also be getting Hanna or Richard's books as well. Thanks to you & everyone for the help!
I don't think I Ching is to grant you wishes to come true. So you don't have to think about your subject when tossing the coins. I Ching is to conduct change when life choices seem to get to a standstill or at a moment of choice which you don't seem to know what to choose. At those times it is good to consult the I Ching to stir up change and a new direction. Now that direction may or may not be good, but at least if it's a bad change you know after that what change to take instead, so it would be a butterfly effect of changes. I don't think the sticks is random enough to have a thorough change, they used coins or even 50 yarrow sticks in ancient china for a reason, even if it was to let you take the time to form the hexagram and that in itself might have a meditative and therapeutic effect, so when you do read your consult, you will be in an ease state of mind. There are no shortcuts to life choices, the journey matters more than the destination.
I have bought the iching book in the video, and the guide to the iching that accompanies it. And I am finding it to be very insightful, and it seems to be pointing out things that would have otherwise taken me a long time, if ever, to figure out and understand. But the reason I write here now is that I have one hold up with it thus far, and that is the concept of cosmic help. To me it coincides with the difficulty I have with believing in God's help, or any other form of supernatural help..
Basically, yes. One die correctly prepared is all you need. Your die needs to allow for four different possibilities: a straight line, a broken line, a straight line that is marked as a changing line, and a broken line that is marked as a changing line. Since a die has six sides, double the possibilities for receiving a single straight or broken line. Construct the six-lined hexagram by tossing your die once for each line. Hanna
@Prodigiousguy8 That's how I ended up at this video too! I read that you will get different results with coins and those Swiss-developed bars than with the original yarrow sticks, due to the decreased odds (1 in 4) of getting a broken(?) line at 1, so the yarrow sticks should be considered the preferred method. Not only because you would get a different hexagram, but also because the time it takes to use the yarrow sticks allows you to meditate on your question.
I just wanted to inform you that if you go to amazon.com it will be an American site and some may not ship internationally. I do not know what the abbreviation is for Sweden. For example, if you live in German you have to go to Amazon.de . So, go to the site closest to you.
Also Mike you use three coins to ask "yes or no questions". FOR ME, a light line or _____ = no / yang and a dark / yin line or ___ ___ = yes for yes or no answers. If one is doing this with money coins then a tails is "no" and a heads is "yes". If two of the coins is a "no" and one is a "yes" then the answer is "no" but not a DEFINITE "no" Hence, I ask another question and throw the coins again. If all THREE coins are light/no or dark/yes then this is a definite "yes" or "no".
I was never a spiritual person, but I read Philip Dick's The Man in The High Castle, which frequently mentioned the I Ching. I find it very intriguing, and I wish to see if this really works.
I did the yarrow stalks before and got easily distracted or made a wrong count. I like that new method with the 6 marked sticks, then again there's going to be different outcomes with varying tools.
Many people have experienced the reliability of other methods of obtaining a hexagram. The sticks were one such method, but they are not being produced any more (too labor-intensive to make them). We now offer special dice that have proven to be equally reliable. What counts is your sincerity when you connect with the oracle. The dice are offered on our website "ichingoracle.com" // Hanna
I couldn't see myself operating the yarrow sticks. It's very playful though, I'm sure they bring a lot of magic to it. Thanks for this, I've been wanting to learn for months, only ever used the computer I Ching calculator on Eclectic Energies - it's amazing stuff.
We call them dark and light lines because they represent the two Cosmic forces, which through their interplay create transformations. They are also known as YIN/YANG. The words "broken" and "unbroken" don't tell us about their nature; they belong in a mechanical language. Hanna
Thank you very much. It is almost 10 years to the day since this video was posted. It took me a while before I heard the call to re-introduce myself to the practice of the I Ching. I heard about it from reading the lovely book, 'Love, An Inner Connection' years ago. Your video is extremely well done. Thank you, Hanna, for your efforts. Which, btw, how are you doing these days?
It makes me very happy to know that you have found your way back to the I Ching, and felt that my video was helpful. And thank you for asking about me. I am doing fine and am very much enjoying my daily lessons from the Sage! Hanna
Hi, that has been a tradition, until Carol and I learned about a method to clarify the message(s) given by the first hexagram. That method (we call it the Retrospective-Three-Coin Method, or RTCM) is explained in all three books we co-authored. When we have understood those messages well enough, there is no more reason to read the second hexagram. Hanna
Hi there, there is no pre-determined value attributed to either side of the coin. You can define that for yourself. The main thing is that you then stick with your definition. Hanna
I am sorry you are having such difficulties. You can also order the book directly from the publisher and have it sent to Sweden. Go to the publisher's website by googling Anthony Publishing Company
Hello, every time I land on a 9 ( three heads ) I make a -- -- from -----* but when I read in my I-ching book by wilhelm/baynes it reads as a Six for the changing line... For example, the bottom trigram is K'an and the top Chen. The only changing line is the last line, which when I toss my coins comes out to a 9 or -----*. The hexagram is Hsieh/ Deliverance, and the last line reads as: Six at top means: The prince shoots at a hawk on a high wall. He kills it. Everything serves to further. I have been having this issue with the line reading... It seems to be vice verse for every line. As if I am not writing down the right lines... Ive looked else where to see if the changing lines differ but everyone says that all tails or all 2 is -- --* changing into ------ and all heads or all 3 is -----* changing into -- --... This is only the confusing thing since in the book the changing lines dont seem to be corresponding with the line readings.. Please help if possible, Thank you.
Hi Mark. Some authors define the two sides the other way around. That is also fine. The main thing is that you make a choice which author you want to follow, and then stick with the definition you have chosen. Hanna
@@Dmtcadet Good question. You need to make your choice before tossing the coins. The voice that speaks to you through the I Ching takes into account which system you have chosen to use. It will use that system to give you the hexagram you need. Hanna
The dot indicates that that line is of particular relevance to your question/issue. You do not need to check the second hexagram if you are using our book "I Ching, the Oracle of the Cosmic Way."
Dominik F. Rollé no longer offers his book with sticks as a set. We also no longer offer these sticks. We only know that you can find something similar on Amazon. Search for: I-Ching-Frits-blok. Best regards, Hanna.
Thank you for this video; I bought an I Ching book but I found some aspects of the instructions to be a bit unclear, so it was useful to see a demonstration here. Just one question: if you use the sticks, aren't the probabilities of drawing the equivalent of a 7 or a 9 via the coin throwing method different? As they had four sides you'd have a one in four chance of getting a moving dark line, for example, but with the coins there would only be a one in eight chance of this happening, meaning that the chances of you getting a moving line would be significantly increased.
Thank you for your question. All considerations about probability are of a purely mental nature and do not really come from a true understanding of the nature of the oracle. The Cosmic Chance Manager can give us the hexagram and changing lines that contain the message(s) intended for us at that moment, no matter which of the means you mentioned we use. Hanna
@ALEKHINE1927 It cannot be the subject of a ten minute video to explain in detail what is involved when we consult the I Ching. What I demonstrated was the technical aspect of how to obtain an answer. As to the various relationships between hexagrams and trigrams I, personally, would not put the emphasis on that aspect. What counts for me is a sincere desire to understand the I Ching's message. No moving lines? If you post this question again, I will have more space to reply. - Hanna
I am not familiar with that book, but I do know that the I Ching works when you consult it from a real need. Why don't you try it out and see how it relates to your personal need? - Hanna
Hi Jason, if you go to our website "ichingoracledotcom" and click on "books and more," you will see that we now offer dice to consult the I Ching. Greetings, Hanna Moog
@hannamoog Thank You for your explanation Hanna. I will have to carry on with an open mind, and not seek to point blame at any one thing. To learn what can be learned from personal involvement with the I Ching is something that should be considered by everyone. The wisdom contained in this book is very real, I have no doubt about that. Thank you for creating it.
Thank you for this video! Can you give some details on those sticks? Where to get a set? Or, if they're custom, can you provide the dimensions of them? Length, width, etc? Thank you!
Thanks for your comment! The sticks are 7" long and 1/4" thick. They are no longer offered on the market. I can give you more details re the distribution of the markings, if you contact me through our website at ichingoracle (dot)com.
I have not developed an app for how to obtain a hexagram. But there are sites on the internet that offer the use of a random generator. Search under "random generator for I Ching." Best, Hanna
@Duccio Campriani so this is 5 years later, but i guess ill post anyway. the I Ching was originally done with sticks of Yarrow. you can probably buy those on amazon.
Would it be acceptable to build a hexagram in the following way? Flip 6 coins in a row and assign a light line to heads and a dark line to tails. Or is there something indispensable about using the mathematical formulae you described at first? I don't understand how the lines indicating transformation apply to the reading, so perhaps I'm missing something. I am new to the I Ching so I'm sorry if these are basic questions.
The problem with the three-coin method is that it does approximate the same odds as the original yarrow stalk method. For example, getting a old yin does not have the same probablity as, say, young yin. Someone clever devised a two-coin method that comes much closer, and is described here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/I_Ching_divination#Two-coin_method
Thank you... 🌻how fascinating did my first reading im moving and getting rid of things i love and it said no disgrace in getting rid of your assets. It will help set me free! 41
It's nothing but probability that determines what message you get. People then interpret what it says in a way that makes it feel personal, but of course, it's not. I guess it could be entertaining though.
In you book, I Ching, The Oracle of the Cosmic Way, in the glossary (under Helpers) on page 567, there is a reference to page 682 which does not exist. The reference should be to page 535.
Hanna, I am watching your video again and I notice I have the same question as I did a year ago, which is funny! But how do you know light from dark lines? Is it based on odd and even numbers? I remember you responding but have cleared my old emails. Be great to hear back. Thank you.
A light line is an unbroken line. If you use three coins to toss a line, and you attribute the value 3 to the "head" side, you have received a light line when your total count is either 7 or 9. If it is 7, you have received a light line that is not changing. If you have received a 9, it's a light line that is changing. Best, Hanna
Hello, LordShivasServant, I appreciate your comment. The Cosmic Way has nothing to do with magic, rather it is the normal way by which the Cosmic Consciousness does things. You'll understand this better when you use our book "I Ching, The Oracle of the Cosmic Way," in which the Cosmic Principles of Harmony are described in each hexagram. Greetings, Hanna
I know this might be hard to know or remember, but where can you buy those sticks? I really like the size and look of the ones in the video. Thank you!
We no longer offer these sticks. But you can get something similar as part of a set with a book, if you go to amazon and search for I-ching-frits-blok. I have not seen the book or the sticks. Someone else sent me this hint.
Thank you so much for this. Every one else seems to have forgotton the fundamental method of teaching from the beginning. I just wanted to know how you got to decide about the trigram - was it a painting, a 64 sided dice, a pack of cards? I got my answer here - at last!
Unfortunately, the sticks are no longer being produced. However, you can use a die instead. It is called a "hexagram die" and can be obtained through our website. Look for: ichingoracle. Hanna
@@hannamoog Why do you recommend using a die? It doesn’t produce changing and unchanging lines which is a core component of the divination. By using them you’ll always only get 1 hexagram. Even the Great Treatise says that line Judgements are in some cases more important than hexagram itself.
@@a11en99 the black die we sell through our website is not an ordinary die. It is designed for the purpose of creating a hexagram including changing lines. Hanna
To Vincent Chun Sze. The sticks are no longer made. We now use a special dice. You can buy it through our website ichingoracle. Click on "Other Sales Items". Hanna
To Justin Moore. In my experience, it does not matter how the trigrams are arranged in a circular order. What is known as the pre-heaven order of Fu Hsi emphasizes their complementarity. It is important not to call them "opposites" - something invented by humans. Opposition does not exist in the harmonious Cosmic order. Hanna
I'm interested in making my own sticks. Do you know where i can find a pattern so i can mark the 6 sticks correctly on all 4 sides? I like the idea of creating my own divination tools rather than buying a set that wasn't crafted with my own intentions and hands. Lol,i hope that doesn't sound too woo woo.

Hi Heidi. I am not familiar with the kind of books you are referring to. Sorry. Hanna
hi Hanna, thanks for the vid'. should i consider the new hexagram denoted by the transforming lines?
The version of the I Ching I have is by Margaret Thompson and in it it says heads is 2 and tails is 3, can somebody explain
Hi Mark. Some authors define the two sides the other way around. That is also fine. The main thing is that you make a choice which author you want to follow, and then stick with the definition you have chosen. Hanna
Hanna Moog wouldn’t this change what hexagram I get?
@@Dmtcadet Good question. You need to make your choice before tossing the coins. The voice that speaks to you through the I Ching takes into account which system you have chosen to use. It will use that system to give you the hexagram you need. Hanna
Onde comprar os bastões de I Ching?
We no longer offer these sticks. We only know that you can find something similar on Amazon. Search for: I-Ching-Frits-blok. Best regards, Hanna.
what does mean dot (change) shall i check left and right hex too?
The dot indicates that that line is of particular relevance to your question/issue. You do not need to check the second hexagram if you are using our book "I Ching, the Oracle of the Cosmic Way."
Dominic wolley how can I bıy these Sticks please ?
Dominik F. Rollé no longer offers his book with sticks as a set.
We also no longer offer these sticks. We only know that you can find something similar on Amazon. Search for: I-Ching-Frits-blok. Best regards, Hanna.
@@hannamoog thank you 🙏
Thank you for this video; I bought an I Ching book but I found some aspects of the instructions to be a bit unclear, so it was useful to see a demonstration here.
Hanna
Thank you, Jorge.
- Hanna
Would you be able to use chance cubes instead of coins?
Hi Jason, if you go to our website "ichingoracledotcom" and click on "books and more," you will see that we now offer dice to consult the I Ching. Greetings, Hanna Moog
This book was so costly on Amazon if if you have any copy of this book please send me
Happy 2023 Hanna! Curious if those hexagram sticks are available for purchase. Thank you :))
We no longer offer these sticks. We only know that you can find something similar on Amazon. Search for: I-Ching-Frits-blok. Best regards, Hanna.
Thank you ❤️
Too bad those oracle sticks don't seem to be available on the website anymore. Anyone have any ideas where to get them?
I can send you the instructions how to make them yourself. Contact me through our website ichingoracledotcom.
Is there already an app for that?
I have not developed an app for how to obtain a hexagram. But there are sites on the internet that offer the use of a random generator. Search under "random generator for I Ching." Best, Hanna
can we do this with dices?
Thank you Hanna for posting this, it is so helpful. Where would one obtain these sticks by chance?
We also no longer offer these sticks. We only know that you can find something similar on Amazon. Search for: I-Ching-Frits-blok. Best regards, Hanna.
Hi! Very nice video. Where I can find the four stick you used to cinsult the oracle? Wich is the name of its inventor?
@Duccio Campriani
so this is 5 years later, but i guess ill post anyway. the I Ching was originally done with sticks of Yarrow. you can probably buy those on amazon.
This video works nicely at 1.25 speed. 'Great information. Thanks!
Best explination i have got on youtube, thank you
The problem with the three-coin method is that it does approximate the same odds as the original yarrow stalk method. For example, getting a old yin does not have the same probablity as, say, young yin. Someone clever devised a two-coin method that comes much closer, and is described here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/I_Ching_divination#Two-coin_method
Andrew Dugas You mean, I think, "is that it does NOT approximate the same odds".
Thank you... 🌻how fascinating did my first reading im moving and getting rid of things i love and it said no disgrace in getting rid of your assets. It will help set me free! 41
Where do you buy the sticks?
We no longer carry them, but someone found them on Etsy. Look for I Ching Hexagram Yao Staves.
It's nothing but probability that determines what message you get. People then interpret what it says in a way that makes it feel personal, but of course, it's not. I guess it could be entertaining though.
Great!!!!!!I LOVE IT!!THANKS FOR SHARING
In you book, I Ching, The Oracle of the Cosmic Way, in the glossary (under Helpers) on page 567, there is a reference to page 682 which does not exist. The reference should be to page 535.
Sorry about that glitch. The page number refers to the first edition, we failed to correct it. Hanna
Thank you so much !
Very helpful. Thank you
Now can you also start drawing the lines from top to bottom, or does it HAVE to be bottom to top?
Hanna, I am watching your video again and I notice I have the same question as I did a year ago, which is funny! But how do you know light from dark lines? Is it based on odd and even numbers? I remember you responding but have cleared my old emails. Be great to hear back. Thank you.
A light line is an unbroken line. If you use three coins to toss a line, and you attribute the value 3 to the "head" side, you have received a light line when your total count is either 7 or 9. If it is 7, you have received a light line that is not changing. If you have received a 9, it's a light line that is changing. Best, Hanna
you mention a Dominique "Vaulais" ? for the sticks? could you not put the details in the description, please?
His name is Dominique Rollé. I am not sure what you mean by "not putting the details in the description. ??? Hanna

@@hannamoog thank you for the help!
Thank you
Thank you so much for this. Every one else seems to have forgotton the fundamental method of teaching from the beginning. I just wanted to know how you got to decide about the trigram - was it a painting, a 64 sided dice, a pack of cards? I got my answer here - at last!
everyone?
Hi there! Where can o buy those sticks that were made by the Swiss person? Thank you.
Hanna
@@hannamoog Oh sorry I thought it was one of those dice with just trigrams.
Thank you! I love those sticks!!

To Vincent Chun Sze. The sticks are no longer made. We now use a special dice. You can buy it through our website ichingoracle. Click on "Other Sales Items". Hanna
Will you please make a video on using the dice?
I would love to have the sticks!!!! Are you going to produce them again?
I can explain to you how to do it with sticks.
What do you think about the King Wen vs Fu Hsi arrangement?
To Justin Moore. In my experience, it does not matter how the trigrams are arranged in a circular order. What is known as the pre-heaven order of Fu Hsi emphasizes their complementarity. It is important not to call them "opposites" - something invented by humans. Opposition does not exist in the harmonious Cosmic order. Hanna
Absolutely it is simple for understanding, but there is something wrong when you calculate the probability....
How so? I’m genuinely curious to see your assessment
I can send you a description of the pattern. Please contact me through our website ichingoracledotcom. Hanna
I don't think the sticks is random enough to have a thorough change, they used coins in ancient china for a reason, even if it was to let you take the time to form the hexagram and that in itself might have a meditative and therapeutic effect, so when you do read your consult, you will be in an ease state of mind. There are no shortcuts to life choices, the journey matters more than the destination.
