Exploring Cornwall - A Visit to Truro in the Rain!

- It's raining in Cormnwall, so Mark Sellwood and I decide to visit Truro, Cornwall's capital city. Watch out for comedy moments.
Truro prospered in the 18th-19th centuries. Industry flourished through improved mining methods and higher prices for tin, and the town attracted wealthy mine owners. Elegant Georgian and Victorian townhouses were built, such as those seen today in Lemon Street, named after the mining magnate and local MP Sir William Lemon. Truro became the centre for society in the county, even dubbed "the London of Cornwall".

There were a few cathedrals built in 20th Century!
Liverpool, 1904; Westminster Cathedral (Catholic) 1910; Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral (Catholic) 1967; Clifton Cathedral in Bristol 1973.
That was loads of fun! Truro looks lovely, even in the rain. Magnificent Cathedral, such craftsmanship. Thank you Richard and Mark.
So pleased you enjoyed it Nigel.
Well I've learned something today. I had no idea that a cathedral of this calibre was built as late as the 19th Century. It's comforting to know that such craftsmanship and artistry can still be produced.
Absolutely! Stunning building.
who said you cant have fun in the rain? You two are a great double act and you put a smile on my face too, a great start to the day.
So pleased you enjoyed it Sid. I love to make people smile.
Rather bonkers Sid!!
Richard & Mark that was outstanding! During the Coinage Hall I was laughing so hard I had to stop the tape until I could contain myself again!
You - What did they do there?
Mark - They halled coins!
Then reading the plaque - "damm I missed it then!" I started laughing so hard my cat looked at me like I was insane!😂🤣😂🤣🙀
The Cathedral was absolutely amazing! Just loved that round window. This vid was so good I had to watch it a 2nd time!!!👏👏👏
It rained and I through it was going to be a lame episode. Then it turned out to be one of my funniest. :) Thanks for the comments.
@@RichardVobes thanks for all the joy!
Lovely comment thank you Ramibu
Laughter all the way through, my jaws are aching, thank you so much Richard and Mark, love the hat. Look forward to the next video.
So pleased you enjoyed it and sorry about the jaw.
So glad we made you laugh Ann, take care
It may have been raining but your humour brought out the sunshine! A very amusing and interesting video
Thanks you so much - I am thrilled you enjoyed it.
I love watching you videos because I get to see what other places are like to and it’s very interesting.
Thanks so much - very kind of you to say so!
😂😂😂wow that lovely and interesting about Cornwall,😳😁😂😂walk in the rain wonderful🤔🤔😳😁😂 lovely history 🕵️thanks you both for funny amazing video I love it can't wait for the next one 😂😂😂
Thank you nickey, sorry we was rather sketchy with facts and information. We both decided to explore the centre of Truro on the spur of the moment
We did have a laugh.
It's fine Mark - it's about entertaining people. If anyone wants more facts they can look them up on Google!
Hahahahahah - how funny!
Gosh, that was wet!
Truro Cathedral looked spectacular- a fine example of Victorian Gothic. I think there’s only been three or four post reformation Anglican cathedrals built from scratch (many cathedrals were parish churches previously) - you could argue St Paul’s, but certainly Truro, Coventry (after the previous was bombed), Liverpool, and Guildford.
(There is in Truro Cathedral, the old south aisle of St Mary’s church, a 16th century remnant which still serves as the town centre parish church!)
It's a lovely old place - rather young for sure!
Lovely area !!!
It sure is!
After watching I went on the Google map and clicked the Royal Cornwall museum! Bingo! Amongst other stuff, there’s a kitchen range that could be the greatgranparent of your Esse and some mineral rocks with the word wheal(that Julia was trying to find the meaning of)!!
Ah now that would have been good to see!
Really like your hat. YOU look vary "dashing" with your new hat. Love the cathedral- Gorgeous!!
Watching this 1 year or so later, but you two are hilarious!!!. Please come back when you can and do some more. love the hat too!
So pleased you enjoyed it - I must get back to Cornwall.
Love the hat, looks good. You two are so funny together , I smiled through whole video
Oh good stuff - I thought it was rather funny!
Glad you enjoyed it Debbie
Great stuff..Good Morning Mr Vobes 👍
Morning John!
Thanks Richard and Mark, we had abysmal weather yesterday on the south coast so we sat and watched this on the TV, we did laugh along very hard. The moment you notice the umbrella creeping into shot is priceless I let out a huge belly laugh. There are some fascinating places you found there and if I want to find out more about them I shall use Google. For a 15 minute video I think you both covered a wide array of places - I for one didn't know of this city before the video. It was a great video and very much had the feel of two friends finding a new place and adapting to problems while filming - most content creators would have headed straight home until the weather improved but instead we had a more personal video which shows just a fraction of difficulties you can run into when making these type of videos and only have a limited time.
Yes, I think adding a personal perspective to the videos is essential. :) Thanks for your kind words.
Fantastic cathedral, last time I was there was a Naval wedding. All the bits uniform sword etc.it was great.
Wow - good for you Micky!
Well done for soldiering on in the rain, you both made me giggle, looks like you had fun anyway. I can sympathise it's so hard to do filming in the rain. P.S. love the hat, I think it really suits you and is practical too
Thanks Cheryl! Water on the lens is a pain! Glad you like the hat too :)
I belieeeve this is a very funny video and i belieeve Richard looks very good in the comedy hat but yes my facts are sometimes not that precise....back to mugging up 😁
I think Richard has found a kindred spirit in you! You two had me in stiches! I hope he comes back to Cornwall to do a 2nd series sometime soon! Anxiously awaiting the rest of the week!🤗
You are very funny Mark and that is all that counts! Sod the facts. People loved it.
I am definitely keen to do more videos with Mark in the future!
@@RichardVobes cheers mate, look forward to it 👍
I vote for the hat adds a bit of Indiana Jones to your image.
Hello from NE Ohio USA. love the hat, Indy.
Hahahahaha - I need a bit of action hero in my videos. Thanks.
Thanks so much! Very kind!
That was a lot of fun Guys :-)
So pleased you enjoyed it.
Ah Truro, been through there but not stopped. There is a Great Western Railway Express passenger locomotive named after Truro, city of Truro. and it is allegedly the first locomotive to reach 100 miles an hour, but there is no evidence to prove that. I personally believe that it didn't go 100, it just doesn't seem capable of it!
That's Cathedral was very grand, it's amazing to know it was built so recently!
Well done great video suits you by the way!! 👍
Thanks George - your train journey sounds like fun. Glad you liked the hat!
I kinda like the hat!!! it gives you that -raiders of the lost ark look👀only in your case☝raider of the lost exploration😂😂😂
Yep - that's me! Lost!!!
I've been to Charlotte's tea room three times it's beautiful, the pizza restaurant is on the bottom floor but the tea room is very special
Shame about the rain, but you've had a run of nice of good weather.
Considering it's age, the Cathedral looks very nice.
Its not a bad building after all! :)
Nice to see you staying perpendicular in this video!! atb snack.
One tries, don't you know!
I didn’t realize how long the line is I am now going to climb over the mattress and see if I can get it standing up ? The cathedral is an impressive place 🤷🏼♀️💞💖💞🙋🏼♀️
Didn't see much of 'Truro'? but enjoyed the comedy double act!
Thanks
There will be an alien craft landing in Truro, November 2021.
I bet the rain was going streight down your neck with that brim. Very atmospheric place.
It certainly was, and on the camera!
Lol! Wish I was there!
It's a lovely place, rain or shine. Thanks for watching.
I think if there's a cathedral its a city. Was it a town before the cathedral was built. I was told Lostwithiel was the capital at one time?
That is a good question!
Come to Wadebridge
I will have to do that sometime.
excellent and funny video lol also you may like to know Truro like Bristol and Exeter during the English civil war once had its own Mint, it was established in the 1640s by royalists to pay the troops.if anyone is interested in this period and its coinage they might find this pdf of interest which I have in my collction...heres link "NOTES ON THE MINTS OF TRURO AND EXETER UNDER CHARLES 1ST" www.britnumsoc.org/publications/Digital%20BNJ/pdfs/1934_BNJ_22_17.pdf
also it was at Tresillian bridge near Truro on March 15th 1646 ..sir Ralph Hopton and the royalist army surrendered to Thomas Fairfax and the Parliamentarians...Fairfax its believed to have used The Wheel Inn in the village of Tresillian as his HQ at the time
And I thought you meant Extra Strong Mints - not really, fascinating stuff Shaun.
That would be an interesting place to explore and story to tell.
Rather disappointed in this tour. I think you did a disservice to the city. You could have mentioned the many interesting things about Truro, like the leats that run through the cobbled streets to keep them clean, the Lander’s monument at the top of Lemon st and if you had gone to Green lane near the football ground you could have shown a magnificent panorama of the whole city which would have highlighted the green spire on the cathedral, made of copper, to honour the miners of Cornwall who you mentioned so often in previous videos. Truro means 3 rivers. Truro is one of the prettiest places in the whole of the South-West. I think you failed to get that across. Truro has its busiest days in the summer, in the rain, when visitors go looking for something else to do and there is plenty to do and see. I also think that your expert needs a better connection to google! I have really enjoyed your other videos and am subscribed to your channel but this one really let you down.
Sorry we tried, its was horrible weather and we came down to Truro on the spur of the moment, i have to be honest i dont know the area around Truro awfully well. It was a quick walk around the centre of town, more of a chat and a bit of fun. Remind myself to do better research next time.
I don't really try to make a serious documentary of places I go - it's just entertainment. As Mark said in his comment, it was spur of the moment and I am exploring the city 'as a tourist' and not an expert. It was a lot of fun and I will return another day. I am sure there is lots to see. Maybe you would like to take me around and point things out. That would be cool. Judging from other comments, people enjoyed the fun approach. Take care.
I think this is slightly unfair. Dont get me wrong everyone has the right to their own opinion but I feel this comment comes across very harshly. I've been watching Richard a long time and he is open to constructive criticism. It may not have been ment to come across in the way it has, but as is the way of the internet I suppose. Richard has been to many of local places near where I used to live and missed some of the most interesting places. I personally didn't think he did my town an injustice for missing them. I put it down to him either not knowing or picking other things he finds interesting for his channel and as a visitor to the town. These visits are so short with all of the things different towns and cities offer it would be impossible to get them all in. I'm sure Richard will be back and take on board some of the things you have mentioned. As for the comments towards Mark, not everyone knows everything about the town's/cities/villages they live in. I couldn't even tell you the name of the road 3 roads from mine. Thanks to this video I have found somewhere new I had never heard of before and will be visiting in the future. This isn't an attack or a keyboard warrior looking for an argument just a plea to be kinder to one another. And remember we all see the world in a different way.
Richard, you rotter. Stop being nasty to Mark
Hahahahaha - I am a totter! :)
Richard Vobes 😄
