  • A walk around Cornwall's only city, Truro in November when everyone is getting ready for Christmas. Catch a glimpse of the shop windows with their festive offerings!
    This is a circular walk which starts at the Cathedral, proceeds into the retail area of Boscawen Street and Lemon Quay. Explores the history of of the Lander Monument and Lemon Street, then after a visit to the beautiful Walsingham Place takes in Victoria Gardens, returning to visit the Cathedral. We share with you some of the history associated with the city, and have some fun as we explore the delights of Truro.

    Delighted to see this, as I was in Truro three days ago! As my Canadian home is covered in snow, it was lovely to get into the holiday season walking and shopping in this lovely part of Cornwall. Have done a few adventure walks since arriving...climbing Carn Brea, walking the surrounding Great Flat Lode, and climbing the dunes after walking through Mexico Towans near Gwithian. My passport is Canadian, but my heart is Cornish. Can't wait to see your next video.😊

      "My passport is Canadian, but my heart is Cornish." Right? I love it. Sadly, I am an American (embarrassing at the moment) but I have never felt as much at home as when I was in Cornwall. Can't wait to go back and I'd immigrate in a heartbeat if not for family ties in the States

    The 17th century Red Lion Hotel was deemed "too expensive to rebuild". Call me cynical, but I bet there were suddenly several wealthy local councillors after that decision in 1967. It's happened so often in London - that we've lost so many beautiful period buildings to questionable 'development'. When you look at many Cornish towns now (especially coastal) you so frequently see glass & steel flat-pack executive flats/houses go up, and wonder what stunning unlisted piece of architecture was lost. Once our built heritage is gone it's gone forever. On a more upbeat note, I'm so glad the Church of England Commissioners had the sense to incorporate the original St Mary's Church into the Truro Cathedral build!

    • @CornishWalkingTrails
      @CornishWalkingTrails  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      A sentiment I share! We are slowly losing our heritage and wealth of architecture particularly in coastal resorts! Most older coastal homes are raised to the ground and replaced with glass and metal boxes for the super wealthy, untouchable by local people. We have heard stories of houses being built and finished to high standard, the wife coming to view the finished property, not liking the kitchen, ripping it out and having another one fitted before she's even made a cup of coffee in the first one! I fear that most coastal locations will look the same soon! Sarah :)

      You're right. In my vague memory, I remember something about them trying to get planning permission to knock it down, which was refused and then, like a miracle, a lorry mysteriously ran out of control...at a time when it was quiet with hardly anyone around to get hurt...and bingo. No more Red Lion.

    Hi Sarah and Andrew. Although I know this is quite an old vlog now, just before Christmas 2018 in fact, but I wanted to tell you that having watched this one a couple of weeks ago my wife and I decided to catch the train last Saturday (Nov. 20th, 2021) from here in Paignton and try out your walking route for ourselves. I did do some homework first, writing down the various points of interest on the way and printing off some maps of Truro, etc.
    We started off as you did, beside the 900 year old Celtic cross in front of the cathedral and carried on towards Cathedral Lane. The marquee at the pannier market on Lemon Quay was missing, probably due to Covid restrictions, but even though it was all open air it was just as good as it looked in 2018. Walsingham Place was as beautiful as it looked in your vlog and, after noting the infamous lions and your puns regarding them, we went on into Victoria Square and visited the Mallets Home Hardware shop that you highlighted and bought a couple of gifts for Christmas. I actually told two members of staff about CWT but they'd not heard of you... so I educated them about it and they promised to go on TH-cam and take a look.
    After that, we continued up Lemon Street to the monument, then back down again to Lemon Street Market which, not being a Sunday, was open!! It was small, but really good. (Sorry, Andrew.) Then it was up River St. to Victoria Park. Quite a nice park. Small, but we liked it, especially the bandstand. By the way, the floral spitfire memorial was still there despite Andrew's antics ;-). Then it was back into the city centre and the impressive cathedral which we also visited inside.
    I have to say that the route was easy to follow and everything was pretty much as you both described. It was a bit of a thrill for us to find ourselves standing in exactly the same spots where you both stood in the vlog, too. And it was a nice relatively short walk, so not too arduous for the pair of us. As such, it was a great day out and we gave your walk 9 out of 10!
    We're now deciding on which of your featured walks we'll try out next.
    Many thanks. 'Devon' Tony :-)

      Hi ‘Devon’ Tony! WOW what a fabulous comment, what a lovely day trip it sounds like you had a brilliant day out. @@CornishWalkingTrails Hi Sarah and Andrew. Thank you for your lovely reply. Yes, the Mallets Home Hardware staff were more than a little surprised, :-D
      I think it'll be sometime after Christmas when we'll venture over Brunel's railway bridge and into Kernow again. We'll be looking at one of your in-town walks, either in Falmouth which we don't know that well, or our favourite Cornish town St. Ives. It'll be nice to wander around the latter and follow one of your walks when the place is not so crowded.
      Meanwhile, keep up the good work and we'll look forward to seeing you again on TH-cam. Kind regards, Tony (-;

There are several light displays in Cornwall now and I would love to visit some more - careful Mousehole, you may be replaced! We went to Fowey yesterday evening and filmed the 'lights switch on'. It was a fun packed evening, complete with Christmas Market and I have been working on the edit today - looking good! An unexpected delight!!

    Hi Sarah and Andrew. Thanks for the lovely tour of Truro, we have never been there, we have always thought we would leave it for a rainy day so that we don't miss out on the good weather looking around the shops, but it looks much nicer than I thought it would. So nice to see all the old buildings and the fact that they haven't modernised it too much makes it more individual, it really has character and I love all the old lanes ,it will have to go on our list of places to visit next time. Imagine if Andrew had got stuck on the old spitfire in the park, would you have left him or helped him off, why do men always do things like that, can't take them anywhere can you, ha, ha !!! Thanks again for another great video and have a lovely weekend. Bets

    A really fascinating and interesting walk around Truro, which is a lovely city in my opinion! Many thanks! Bob Acton produced an excellent walk book "A History of Truro Vol 3 - Exploring the City and Around". There is a long walk around the city (which took me a whole day), and four lovely circular walks with Truro as the starting point. I've never been up to the top of M & S car park, but an excellent view of Truro is arriving on the train - a lovely view of the cathedral!
