although i saw Derringer play several times w/Edgar Winter, when we caught the time he opened up for Led Zeppelin in Oakland 1977, Edgar was nowehere to be seen (at their notorious final US gig, when Bonham & gangster John Bindon were arrested for assaulting a crew member who nicked the Led Zep sign from a dreesing room trailer backstage); Page, in the throes of his heroin addiction was ineffectual at best, quite an underwhelming show by Led Zep- and Derringer, playing the slot just before them, BLEW THEM OUT OF THE WATER!!! thumbs up, of course, #954

I've seen Rick many many times, and tipped back a few beers with him too. He went to one of my gigs the night after one of his, and stayed for a beer after our first set. We did our Johnny, Edgar, and Rick medley and he liked it. He didn't jam with us though. He gave me advice that I follow to this day. He told me to stop holding my breath during my solos. He's right. When I concentrated on breathing, I discovered that I grind my teeth while I play too. These deprive our muscles of oxygen, and waste energy that causes us to have a rough third set later on in the night. He is one of the coolest down to earth people who are actually famous too. I'm just a nobody, and he's still polite and respectful.

One of my favorites was Rick's singing & playing Back In The USA on the Roadwork album. Similar arrangement to Linda Ronstadt's, but I loved Rick's playing on that. I also played Rick first(?) @@perryantonio20 You would be 100 percent correct on your observation, Jess. I've been a life long fan and life long basketball player. There was a time, I could do every single move and ball handling skill that Pete did and taught. I had the hair and the baggy socks and put my heart and soul into being the best player, I could be. I've never been one to idolize any particular person, (or person's), but Pete was as kind and generous, on the court and off. I met him at a basketball camp when he was with the Atlanta Hawks and he allowed me to show him what he had taught me. It was a moment as a young teen I will never forget. He said it was like watching himself in a mirror. I quickly reminded him that I was better looking. His laughter at my remark was so genuine and he said, "Now, I know you're me"! A beautiful moment for me, for sure. I was originally, on TH-cam, as PistolPete, but I messed up my first account and couldn't remember my passwords or login information and wasn't able to retrieve that account, (bummer), so I was lucky to get the moniker I now have. I can't sign in as PistolPete, but I feel good knowing that they're both mine and no one else can use them. LOL Well, Jess, I'm pretty sure this was way more info than you required, but I thank you for allowing me to take a walk down memory lane. You take care and stay safe.

Very cool! There used to be a bar here in DC that was very bike-friendly, called "The Crow Bar", which always had a block party on Memorial Day weekend following the "Rolling Thunder" ride. Funny story appeared in the local "City Paper" the last year they had it (due to losing their lease on the property). One night, "Rock and Roll Hoochie Koo" was playing, and there was a guy at the bar playing air guitar to it. Another guy saw it and said, "Who does he think he is, Rick Derringer?" The bartender heard it, walked over and told him, "Buddy, that IS Rick Derringer." Rick and his band played at that final block party.

He is one of the fewer 70s era guitarists I've heard who has actually improved with time. his playing was insane, incorporating VanHalen style tapping as well as lightning alternate picking speed. so my point is here's a guy who truly enjoys not just playing, but practicing and continually improving his technique as well. He had a Marshall half stack on stage that you knew was live because you could feel the punch in your chest when he played. So refreshing to be able to absorb the real rock n roll energy of an old school performance in modern times as opposed to an over-mixed, compressed audio engineer's version of what the performance should sound like. The smoothness of technique hadn't developed in him, or in almost everyone way back in that mid '60s, save Mick Taylor (and Frank Zappa, the greatest guitar player of all time). All the rest, they needed to hear it from Hendrix, first. Cuz prior to JimmiH, it was all too rough and nowhere near ready to show off any pretty playing, any classy playing. And it wasn't the Hendrix Wild Thang that kickstarted classy playing (because that cacauphonic mess was anything but pleasant to listen to), it was Watchtower, and Rainy Day, and The Wind Cries Mary. Then Voodoo Chile blew the roof off of the shed, Muddy Waters music front and center, long live the 1st postion E chord.

Bill graham who witnessed the recording of the live performance said Jimi would stand still and forget all the rubbish and theatrics and play with concentration that blew the promoters mind. About the blues pentatonic scale it amazes me that musicians in those days could pull such memorable solos out of very few positions on the neck. RocKn roll hootchie Koo is a good example. Hendrix started to branch out in the last year of his career using notes outside the box and other major minor mixolydian etc. LIke frank Zappa said Jimi needed a musician who could notate his ideas. FRANK usually used one and Steve Vai was one of them. It allows the composer to get it on paper so his ideas are readily available to be played and recalled.

I caught Rick live about a year after this. Then again in 1978 then 2 years ago on a Rock Cruise. Incredible player (Still) , singer, and a massively talented producer's ear for what part and instrumentation fits. Got to talk with him at a Q & A and the man has great stories. This Group with Edger Winter was the real deal. I read a book last year that's available on Amazon- "Gallagher, Marriott, Derringer and Trower" by Dan Muise. Is over 20 years old but loaded with anecdotes, and interviews with people (and in 2 cases, the subjects themselves as Rory and Steve are gone). I highly recommend it to my fellow enthusiasts who love music of the era and this channel. Rick's whole story from being a teenaged bubblegum rocker to an accomplished player in White Trash to a go-to NYC Player and Producer in the 70s is worth a read. And those other guys ain't shabby either. The moral of the book is...these guys never made a lot of money but worked their asses off and loved their craft. And that with the exception of Mick Jagger....musicians are terrible businessmen. Thanks Fil !!!!

And nowadays Rick always shows up at the Dallas Guitar Show in Texas, usually plays and has a booth where he sells his guitars. Thanks so much, Fil. I remember hearing and watching the McCoys when they came through town in the 60s. Rick and his brother were around 16-17 years old. The drummer was so small and young, he had to stand to play the drums because sitting he couldn't reach everything. Also, the first time I heard the magnificent and sorely missed Vox Continental organ. They played Sloopy and Fever and stuff and were just fun, fun as all get out. I am not sure teenagers today know what fun is anymore. Back then, it was much more simple - no phones, no social media, no nothin;. AND it was much more innocent and happier then, Partly, because music was not corporate - today everybody sounds like The Voice or Britain's Got Talent or some other thoroughly obnoxious corporate "talent" show. It was also amazing to see Rick team up with Johnny Winter - what a tour de force!
