the Tau would make for a good pov to introduce the 40k universe in a show or a movie. They are normal and isolated enough for a normie audience to believe this is just some normal sci-fi setting at first, only for the shocking reveal that humanity in this universe became this dystopian imperium, and that they are not even the worst faction

I once read, don't remember where, of a T'au fleet captain that took down an Imperial warship. He turned to an allied human and told he was impressed by imperial AI. The woman was confused and he explained that to make such gigantic ships work they must have extremly advanced AI. He fell into depression when he learnt that most Imperium ships are manned by what amounts to the population of a Hive city, most of whom were born there. The realization that each imperial ship destroyed was essentially a genocide destroyed him.

The Chapter Master who got killed was Corvin Severax of the Raven Guard. On one hand, a great victory for the Tau and Shadowsun, on the other hand it became an action they would soon regret since his successor, former captain of the third company, Kayvaan Shrike, would turn out to be a prodigy and became 3 times the chapter master his predecessor was. So in the long term, their victory just made the Raven Guard stronger 💪.

What I love about the Tau is that you can fool them, beat them, vandalize them and manipulate them...but usually you can only do it once.
Case and point after the whole debacle with the dark eldar they actually managed to trick them by setting up an ambush them in a civilian multi coltured world within their Empire knowing that the dark Eldar just couldnt resist the opportunity to obtain so many diffetent kinds of slaves. Anyway after the DE invaded they waited for them to get too high from their raid and then proceeded to take them by surprise and massacre every single one of them.
Another example is with the Titans during the 2nd Damocles crusade where they equipted their tigersharks with weapons specifically designed to take out Titans. After the first one fell the rest shat themselves and were evacuated.

@@Anon-i2z It's been a while since I played so I can't remember the exact details, but it was partially for the sake of aggressively abusing liberation wars, for the reduced penalties on Empire Size from population, and it increases the chance of certain economic/mobility/power/shielding techs coming up sooner. I generally found that booming in economy would allow me to offset the reduced military power via quantity over quality, whilst being more useful overall.
Normally declaring any regular kind of war will build up wariness from the AI, who start to regard you as a conquering war monger. But Liberation wars avoid that. I would declare them liberally on anyone that that seemed like a potential rival, and knock chunks out of their empire, which I could then set up to absorb in the future.
Part of it is that I just found it fun playing as the shiny noble federation, that swings around slapping every authoritarian/xenophobe empire like some kind of self appointed galaxy-police. A pseudo-contradictory "peace through power" theme. It took a really good grasp of how to manipulate the AI (which I'm sadly probably super rusty on now) but it was fun going out of my way to be all interventionist on any evil doers in the galactic scene.
Also, I've always found the opposite side (militarist/xenophobe) a bit simplistic. Is just kinda dull slowly painting the galaxy red with no intrigue, nuance or much of a story to it.

So the Tau fleets and worlds that have come under Necron attack were just assumed to have been lost…and the Tau don’t know why or how. They are totally ignorant as a civilization that one of the largest factions in 40k exists.

    • @minticusmaximus4288
      @minticusmaximus4288 2 ปีที่แล้ว +34

Ok this sounds funny but is 100% untrue. Like, the Ethereals know a LOT they don't let on, with many turncoat inquisitors, spies, and a vast empire (not the biggest but vast). They have had so many chances to learn about every force they'll be fighting in the 40k universe, so knowledge of the Necrons is not that difficult to find.
Plus... you know the simple fact the Tau have fought and *won* against the Necrons? Meaning many surviving Tau have seen them in battle and know of them. Like at Malbede, where Ultramarines and Tau combat awoke the Tomb World, forcing both forces to focus on the Necrons. Or the Dark Crusade, where the Tau had border skirmishes with Necron before being pushed off world by Blood Raven
The Tau *100%* know what the Necrons are. This isn't even old lore, some of these battles happened 20 IRL years ago

@@minticusmaximus4288 Yea you may have a point that there are probably some Ethereals that do know have some awareness of what the Necrons are. They are more aware than people give them credit for. But current cannon indicates that the interactions between Necrons and Tau are extremely limited. It’s stated in the 6th edition codex I believe on a map that there are no active tomb worlds in Tau space (though there are almost certainly some slumbering ones.) The means their only cannon interactions really come from accidental encounters with fleets in the void and Necron invasions on Tau worlds in order to fight Tyranids. Other than battle reports, I’m not aware of any cannon Tau victories against the Necrons but if you have that information I’d love to hear about it. The only few interactions I have ever read about, between the Necrons and Tau ended in the total destruction of the Tau. By in large, it is definitely cannon that the Tau population and most of the Tau military is unaware of the Necrons existence. If the Ethereals did know about the Necrons, they would certainly keep them a secret from the population as any civilization with technology more advanced than their own would be a serious threat to the greater good and would seriously undercut the Etherials power and standing amongst the Tau allies.
If anything, I would argue that the Kroot likely are more familiar with the Necrons than the Tau. There are a lot of Kroot mercenaries spread out across the imperium who split off from the Tau and they would much more likely hear about tombworlds.

It feels like a lot of the other factions will occasionally act in ways that don't make sense for that faction (and this also extends down to the character level) simply because more gore and tragedy is what the fanbase wants. The Tau always act in a way that makes sense for the Tau; they learn from their mistakes and react to them but still approach situations like Tau. The Tau should have realized that this Galaxy was going to be absolutely hostile to them, and it was shown by the Orks when they first encounter them. This was the first time where they encounter a race that didn’t give a wet fart about the Greater Good or the Tau technology or joining them for security or economic growth, but the Orks only cared about fighting these blueberries horses and their fancy mecha suits. After they beat them they encounter them on other worlds and they were even more hungry for fighting against the Tau, and maybe they should have realized that the Galaxy had to armed themselves to fight against the Orks to survive and that maybe others races may not like the Tau for being different from them.

but they only survived the orks through unity with the other races in the system. most every other species either were cool or found common ground against the orcs to stick together. their culture would seek to increase the number of species in its fold to increase its survivability against the orcs and other possibly threats. hell "the greater good" is basically the entire idea behind that. lesser species who normally would fight for resources banding together against the bigger threat and to better the society.

@@miguelcom13 The 'minor' races part is the problem. The minor races can preach peace and coexistence all they want, but the major factions are all either unable or unwilling. Which is by design. People keep forgetting that when the WH40K setting was designed, it wasn't supposed to be what it is today: It was a setting for fantastic wargaming and a satire of science fiction that took over-used ideas and either exaggerated them to the point of comedy or inverted them into mockery. Part of the point is that there are no 'heroes' - there are the bad guys, the worse guys, and the nice guys who exist to be splattered in order to drive home just how bad everyone else is.

Y'know, the Tau not being all too connected with the warp while the other races under their banner are is both a really cool and horrifying concept.
Since if the Tau weren't under scrutiny from Chaos before, adding a ton of humans who aren't very capable of rationalizing outside of faith is going to put a blip on the radar and that's only going to grow as the Tau expand.
The idea about there now being a literal representation of the greater good in the warp seems like it'll help balance that out, but it's just going to get harder and harder for the Tau to rationalize without giving up and saying "Yeah, that just works." and becoming susceptible to psykers and warp corruption.
