Oh my god. Reliving The nostalgia of watching these special stages I used to play as a 8 year old kid(now 37) brings tears to my eyes. My childhood was the best times in my life. I didn't have to get up early for work like I do now. Sega had some of the best games of the early 90's. I feel blessed for having such a epic childhood. Sega/sonic, blockbuster, roundtable pizza on a friday night after school was the shit.

Very cool dude, Sonic 2 is actually pissing me off a lot with these strategic bonus levels. Actually, these make me want to hate the game. They're so crazy to beat in a negative way, I'll try to collect them all successfully because of this video. The showing of how to avoid the spike bombs, and yeah. Cool dude, cool. ;)
It’s because of these special stages that people have grown toward hating Tails. While he means well, having him curiously follow you through not just the regular stages, but basically become the whipping boy-trailing behind in these special stages, thus messing up your run to the end. Moments like these definitely require a second controller handy, growing up with this game from 1992 (I am defiantly NOT one of them as I was introduced to Sonic in 2007 via Megacollection on PS2) to hone well-timed reflexes for the best ending, or you can just cheat-even THEN the bad ending is more worthwhile than the normal ending (defeats what the value of friendship this game is trying to convey as Tails tries to prove himself as a friend worthy of Sonic’s Trust). In the end, just CHEAT! Unless you are playing via digital download/special emulation that eliminates the sound test needed for this cheat to work, then screw you: have fun babysitting this 2-tailed fox kit!
EWOODJ It’s impossible to make Tails and Sonic switch places on iOS, making the special stages way harder in cases where tails has to swoop in while you get rings from behind.
They could've found a way to make using Sonic and Tails in these special stages a less of a pain by having both Sonic and Tails jump at the same time when you press the jump button that way it's much easier to avoid Tails getting hit by the bombs and losing the rings he helped collect for you.
These zones are insanely hard. These rings and mines pop out right in front of you, giving you less than a second to react. Pausing the game would've helped, and it's best that you try to get all the gems in the beginning zones.
Practice, then go in emerald hill. If your good enough to memorize emerald hilll zone both acts, and all special stages, you aren’t going in chemical plant without super sonic.
the hardest special stage for me to complete with a character alone is th 5th special stage, the amount of rings in that stage is so you have to collect that exact amount of rings or else you will fail the special stage, and without the extra rings that tails collects for you, it's hard to collect the exact amount of rings to pass to the next section, i've was playing sonic 2 community's cut now and i've was just failing at completing the 5th special stage of the game with tails alone because i've wanted to unlock his super form that is a feature of this widescreen remaster of sonic 2.
just watching the sprite work is amazing. Sega was able to create such a 3D feeling environment with just really good pixels and programming. Such a feat of technical awesome!
Too bad the gameplay itself in these stages are ridiculously hard and unfair due to Tails delayed response time to your commands and the split second obstacle placement
I don't play it for a long, long time and I came here to remember childhood and I must say that was really amazing. I tried it many times, the only chaos emeralds I've been able to get was the first one and maybe the second in a good day. When you're heading straight, it's kinda easy since you can see what's coming, but when the stage goes down and you can't see the end of it, that is nearly impossible.
Thanks for the video. I usually have problems sometimes with Tails' lag, but this video helped me and my sister a lot. We got all the emeralds using this video as reference. #6 was a pain. Tails come in handy with the lag on #5.
Wow, this was pretty helpful. I was having problems with the first part of the last stage because I was simply moving left or right dodging the bombs at the right time. I didn't even think about just jumping to the other side.
That's exactly what you have to do, I learned-- simply trying to sidestep won't give you enough reaction time, and you'll hit the bombs more often than not (because of how they're placed).
Who else use to get pissed when tails' dumbass would get blown up after collecting like 40 rings and lose them while being so close to completing the stage and having to pick up his slack in order to recoupe the rings in order to get the chaos emerald.
It had been a looooong time since I last got the emeralds on the Saturn and didn't think I had it in me to get them once again, but this video really helped me out a lot. Thanks lots for helping me get the emeralds. Now I can play as Super Sonic again without having to use the sound test. :)

if you have a ps4, Xbox 1, or switch then you can get sonic mania. the classic like game you have been looking for. i got to the 5th zone myself. paced very well, and it also has a good difficulty curve. it has some classic zones and also some new ones sprinkled in. and the soundtrack is amazing. get it. or maybe in the two year span you probably got it. i got ramble fever.
I bought a Megadrive Mini so I can use save states to tackle thses special stages. Yeah they are still really hard, even if you can have 50 tries. Never thought I'd miss that infuriating rotating maze from Sonic 1. Update. I finally cleared them all and it took ages. The only way to do it is to learn the patterns. Especially on the later stages if you don't know what is coming you don't have a chance. If you are playing with Sonic and Tails you need to take on a Terminator esque role and protect Tails at all costs.
I did this on the DS classic collection, which means i had access to saves allowing me to restart a level if i desire, even with that priveliedge.... i died... but i am resurrected, and with the help of this video, i have achieved the ultimate goal! SEVEN EMERLDS!

And then 25, and 35, because you just give up, feeling that you're toast anyway (of course, w/Sonic Origins' Coins, so long as you have at least one, you can have as many second chances as you need).
This is one of the reasons I prefer Sonic 1 to Sonic 2, at least on the Mega Drive version. Sonic 1's special stages may be crazy and difficult to get through, I was at least able to complete them more consistently with a careful tactic and memory of how they work. Here, it's memory and skill, but multiplied by 1000 as far as I'm concerned. I can beat the first 4 with a bit of effort, but the 5th one just leaves me frustrated.

The frustration of constantly having Tails fuck up my chance of getting an emerald. I swear I wanna beat him like a step child it's so frustrating having him as AI. He's so derpy.
I remember I was about 8 and being stuck on the 4th special stage trying to pass the line of bombs. I then realized I can jump the sides of the half pipe. After that I was able to collect all the emeralds at ease.

Always my favorite Special Stage in the series because of the visuals and how it felt more "Sonic" than the drug trip that was in the first game or...running around collecting spheres. That said, 3 and 5 can jump in a pit. Those two are so frustrating.
Mr Skysen Games i think sonic 3’s special stages ate better from a gameplay perspective. i agree that this feels more “Sonic” but playing these stages are not fun to me. the bombs can come put of nowhere especially when the track turns left or right. though sonic three may have that problem with red spheres coming in (especially when sonic speeds up) at the last moment. at least then i didn’t have to collect and keep 50 rings with put dying in order to play blue sphere.
Honestly, the only major difference between them in terms of gameplay is how you see to get around, with Sonic 3's camera letting you see more around you. In the end, both S2 and S3's stages are memory games and patterns. And as the Chaos Emeralds are more important to the story in Sonic 3, they're easier to get.

I think a S2 special stage with 3D models would be more fun and not heavily have the player rely on memory because the track would be less weird for the eyes. I think the IOS version had them but i cant remember

The final special stage was not only easy to complete, but the background flashing upon getting the final gem made you feel like a winner in life

The 2013 remake kind of fixed this issue by making the special stages actual 3D models.

The frustration of constantly having Tails fuck up my chance of getting an emerald. I swear I wanna beat him like a step child it's so frustrating having him as AI. He's so derpy.
I remember I was about 8 and being stuck on the 4th special stage trying to pass the line of bombs. I then realized I can jump the sides of the half pipe. After that I was able to collect all the emeralds at ease.
I wonder who the fuck play tested this and though “yeah, this is perfectly reasonable even though you literally can’t see the fucking bombs or rings until you’ve already ran into them or passed them”
3 years to complete death egg, but the special stages are stupidly hard, anyways, completing sonic 2 whit the bad ending is enough for me
you know I have a weird thought about this I wish this was a roller coaster or water slide
These give me a migrain & make me not want to 100% the game.
I honestly kinda wish these special stages returned to Sonic Mania instead of the Sonic 3 special stages.
It makes Sonic Labyrinth a good game.

Always my favorite Special Stage in the series because of the visuals and how it felt more "Sonic" than the drug trip that was in the first game or...running around collecting spheres.
That said, 3 and 5 can jump in a pit. Those two are so frustrating.
Mr Skysen Games i think sonic 3’s special stages ate better from a gameplay perspective. i agree that this feels more “Sonic” but playing these stages are not fun to me. the bombs can come put of nowhere especially when the track turns left or right. though sonic three may have that problem with red spheres coming in (especially when sonic speeds up) at the last moment. at least then i didn’t have to collect and keep 50 rings with put dying in order to play blue sphere.
Honestly, the only major difference between them in terms of gameplay is how you see to get around, with Sonic 3's camera letting you see more around you. In the end, both S2 and S3's stages are memory games and patterns. And as the Chaos Emeralds are more important to the story in Sonic 3, they're easier to get.
Mr Skysen Games agree with that. S3’s stages are also memory based. i forgot to mention that. I think a S2 special stage with 3D models would be more fun and not heavily have the player rely on memory because the track would be less weird for the eyes. I think the IOS version had them but i cant remember

Every time I got to play this I just made them run around and loop ta loop until I lost😅😂thought it was funny just missing the rings😂
I got all 7 chaos emeralds on sonic the hedgehog 1 for the genesis but Sonic the hedgehog 2 chaos emeralds is a completely different world it's extremely difficult I only can get the first chaos emerald and the rest I just cannot get them
