    Hey Dave have you tried a plain copier print and then use an old iron to transfer the image on to wood I've been doing that for years and found that it works well and you can use the copy a few times before discarding it it also helps if you set the copier on the dark side to get the most out of it

    • @oldave100
      @oldave100  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have tried that but for whatever reason could not get it to work very well for me. Glad you have a process that's working for you. Thank you for watching and the feedback.

    If you're having trouble with using the freezer paper in your printer because it gets jammed try using a spray basting adhesive that you can get at any craft store or walmart. Spray a regular piece of 8 and a half by 11 paper with the basting adhesive and then attach your freezer paper so that the glossy side is up. Then set your printer to a thick paper setting

    • @oldave100

    Dave, I used Appollo Transparency Film for all printers and a HP Envy 7640 ink jet printer. I took the transparency right out of the box and placed it in the printer. I printed a name on it and took it directly to the wood and transfer it to the pine board with out a problem. Then washed it off let it dry and used it again. No sanding needed. I would send a picture but it is not allowing me to paste.

    • @oldave100

      When you print it out your computer may have an option to reverse the print. Another option (the hard way) is to print it out on clear film first. Then make your final print off of that when it's turned over so it will come out reversed.

      If you're using Word for your letters there is a way to reverse the letters within a text box within formatting... Search for "mirror" in Word help... That's how I found it as my Canon inkjet printer doesn't have a mirror print option.

    Hi Gang, the transparency film I've used in the past has always had a smooth side and a mat or slightly frosted side to encourage toner or ink binding. It's usually easy to detect which side is which when you view the surface with reflected light. I've not tried transfers with this stuff but it might be worthwhile to see if you really need to do the messy sanding step.

    Ugh! I’ve used C. Jenkins freezer paper numerous times successfully in the past, but the new batches of freezer paper from them (8/2023) is horrible! It does not maintain the image. I always answer these comments, but good idea to email me directly, not thru the website. eric@makeawoodsign.com. So not sure why your image isn't transfering well. Here are a couple thoughts just to make sure I'm trying to cover everything. Make sure you're copying on the correct side. That may sound obvious but I've seen it before. Next make sure your board is really smooth. That was a mistake I made early on and got crappy transfers. Now I sand down to 220. Try and use something with a solid edge, like I use my acrylic router bit depth gauge. Try and make the transfer within a short time after you make it. Don;t give it time to day. Hope this helps.

    I havent tried this but I think your transparency paper transfer is worse because of your sanding. You want a smooth surface for the ink to transfer. What you doing is what directions on any paint product says in its instructions. "..scuff glossy surfaces for best adhesion". Thats so the paint sticks better. So, therefore more of your ink is sticking to the paper you sanded, and not transfering. I personally dont like silicone in any areas of paints. Some people want to put clears on top of print transfers, and in the paint world, silicone is one contaminant that causes "fisheyes" and lifting. The other reason of poor transfer is 160 grit is too course. When you would paint a car, they sand the primer with 600 to 800 grit. Try a smoother grit, and without the silicone. Im thinking that you will find out it works better.
    (Just my thoughts. I have airbrushed art in the past and topcoated numerous painted projects with clears. So I do have experience with what Im saying here)

    Very Interesting, but be careful of the silicon spray on the paper as the silicon transferred to the rollers inside the printer that feed the paper, and caused quite a lot of trouble getting ithe rollers cleaned and making the printer work properly again. The silicon was not really necessay.

    That's a lot of work on that transparency, Eric to get to the transferring process :-( And as usual, very informational, and you're straight up with your information. I love your videos. Went through and saw your video on transferring with lacquer thinner for laser printers. Then I did a comparison of the two (2). I came to the conclusion that using the lacquer thinner, is a good stand by; at least to do sign shapes or outlines. For my detailed patterns, though, I'll have to stick to my wintergreen oil method. The image is much sharper and deeper color. Wish I could show you the picture of the two side-by-side. (I also like my laser over inkjet, because the toner lasts a lot longer than ink jet. Especially with all the patterns I make.) I, like so many, would love to sit with you and compare notes on different things.
