For those saying it looked like it worked - it didn’t. All it did was dull the light refraction you could see in the crack which is why it looked like it “sealed up”, but it actually didn’t. I got a new-to-me BMW 435 a few months back, less than 3 weeks into owning the car I got a rock chip in the windshield. I've debated doing something like this before it gets worse, seeing this video gave me the confidence that I can do it myself. Thanks, Meg! For once the TH-cam algorithm did something helpful for me!
I think the fact the rainex side was harder to scrape means that it will probably be a stronger seal. The rai ex side may last longer. I’m curious to see how it is in the long run. Im a middle aged woman and I’m really proud of you for learning all these skills. It really sets you back when you don’t know how to use power tools or do basic repairs on your house or car. I’m trying now to learn at 44 but I can’t help but think of all the money I wasted because I was afraid. All that to say I really appreciate the encouragement to get out there and learn skills and to teach my daughters so they can be confident in the world.
Great project. I have also tried RainX with similar results. Although you can still see the crack a little, I'm sure the window is much stronger and won't crack again. See you next time.
So… I woke up this morning to find a boomerang craxknin my windshield. i was freaking out because i do t have the money to replace it. While wallowing in my despair I ended up on your vid. Not trying to sound crazy but I closed my eyes, said a serenity prayer, then searched for a good vid to help me. Yours was the first that popped up. If this aint fait idk what is. I have a white lifted f-150 almost just like the one in the vid. Same kind of crack, basically. I too cant feel it from the inside. Man, i was stressinggggg. Your vid helped me so much. Thank you!!! PS you are beautiful
Thank you very much for this demonstration and review!!! Always wondered if the windshield repair kits worked and were worth the money?! Now thanks to your honest review and application, we all know! Keep trying new things and pushing yourself in all areas of your life and know that we care and appreciate you!!!
Great to see ya at work again! Just started the vid and paused for a moment to see if that headlight is going to be in an upcoming video. The projects are all around you. Simply love the channel and your videos. Mostly love the premise they are both built on. With your curiosity and tenacity nothing is out of reach. Happy Saturday!
Thanks so much @mrpbright ! Yes I think I have an electrical connection issue in that headlight because it seems to work intermittently, later in the video it starts working again so I'll have to dive into that in a future project! Thanks for the ongoing support, have a great weekend!
@@Meg.August I noticed it was working later on too. Maybe you could do a diagnosis video with a LED headlight comparison. Amazon is filled with led bulbs for 30 a pair while auto parts stores want 100 a pair.
@@mrpbright I think I will! It would be nice to get that taken care of. And honestly, gotta love amazon for that. I can't justify spending 3x as much at the dealership or at auto stores!! (If Canadian Tire had it I'd get it there lol!)
@@Meg.August You guys are lucky to have canadian tire, they have about everything it sounds like. One thing to check for with the led bulbs not many people rate when they do videos about them is radio noise. some of the cheaper ones will just about run you out of the car with the radio interference.
The budget kits can work pretty well on stone chips, BUT the long crack in your windshield should be replaced. There is a standard call ROLAGS (repair of laminated auto glass standard). Damage over 6 inches in length takes away from the structural integrity of the windshield. The windshield doesn't just stop wind, but provides structural integrity to the roof of the vehicle as well. Hope this helps. Also, love the videos!!!!!
Yeah I use to work at a glass place that did repair and replace on windshields. Smaller chips it would actually fill it in and make the chip disappear at times. The bigger ones didn’t but there was a tool that I used that would pull the glass up from the outside and used UV light to harden it.
I will be interested in seeing what happens when you have cold. I lived in very cold areas. The winter may cause a problem. In Montana we had to buy a new battery every other year but we didn't have much snow latter I lived in Oregon and we had both snow and freezing fog. It may be fine or it may run into trouble in the winter. You did a great job.
In the uk the car would need a new screen as it would not pass its Mot test once a year. You would usually pay the windscreen excess of £70 on the insurance to get it replaced
It seems like a lot of places have strict rules like that! Where I live, it's very common to get a new chip or crack every few months, so it's not really feasible to be replacing it every time that happens, only when it's impacting your vision.
@@Meg.August same here the screen can chip anytime if the chip is less than 25mm the windscreen company repair it free of charge on your insurance This is the uk standard of the windscreen to pass its mot test Yes, as a windscreen is crucial to a driver's visibility, an MOT takes into consideration the state of your windscreen and the impact any damage may have on the driver's view. For your car to pass an MOT, the windscreen must not have a chip, larger than 10mm, in the line of your sight while driving. A chip larger than 40mm anywhere else on the windscreen can also result in a failed MOT. Therefore, we advise having your windscreen repaired before an MOT.
Hi Meg. It looks like one of the headlights on your truck might be out. Btw, I just recently discovered your channel but now I’m hooked. Thanks so much @brian5o that's really kind! I'm so glad you're enjoying the videos and that you find them inspiring, that's wonderful to hear! Have a great week!
I just tried applying the RainX kit to some long cracks and I could see no difference before vs after. I didn't have any bullseyes. I used heat from a heat gun on the inside and also pushed slightly to try and get the resin into the cracks. It just did not happen. Regarding the scraping; they make single edge razor blade holders that are used by window repair folks. They make scraping a lot easier. If you have long cracks, you won't be happy with the RainX kit. So I'm looking for a better long crack solution! Suggestion: If you get cold, put on a hat with ear flaps. That should help. ;-)
the things you take on! I was cringing at the rim project but it was great. going to disagree with kevparker, the goal isn't to bring structural strength back but only to reduce the distraction (glare and flare from sun) to make driving safer and to stop spread. the windshield is two layers of tempered glass with plastic between to hold it together, its only the outer part that generally breaks. These kits could work so much better, the goal is to get fluid in the crack which is a challenge. for this type, putting packing tape on the outside to seal it, vacuum on one end of the crack and glue fed into the other end of the tape. I've had very successful repairs with every DIY kit. Brake cleaner could have delaminated the plastic, its really damaging to some surfaces. great job!
Good to know, thank you Derek! and that's a really interesting idea with the vacuum and packing tape, thanks for the tip. I do have a crack in my jetta's windshield as well so I may try a different approach for that one. Thanks for watching and have a great rest of your weekend!
@Meg.August There are lots of ways to create a vacuum. Some kits use a suction cup with a syringe to pull a vacuum. Not sure which method is the most effective
i tired the Rain-X kit on my Honda Fit after getting hit by a gravel truck "gun shot" to my windshield . It was a good hit with small spider cracks surrounding a divot. The kit repaired the crack and divot but unfortunately when applying pressure to do the repair the laminated layers separated. What resulted was a floral pattern around the fixed crack. So, if your laminated windshield (all windshields are three layers - glass/plastic/glass) is compromised in any way better to leave the crack alone and see if it gets worse. Once the flower appeared I had no choice but to replace the windshield. William
I carried the Car I am driving to the Auto Glass shop a few days after I purchased it because of two small spots almost like yours... Asked how much to replace the windshield he started laughing and said he had repaired it just last week....I have been driving it 3 years now. They are still the same...Now I know they can be repaired..
Great Effort! Did you really kneel on your hood to clean your window? 🤠 Your repair could have gone down hill really quick right there! Once you get a crack you’re pretty much done. Bite the bullet and replace the windscreen. If you can’t afford it ask your insurance company (ahead of time) about windscreen options. I think both products are one star results if your windscreen still looks cracked. There is no way that repair would pass registration inspection here in Australia. You did a great job on the video!
I wouldn't be trusting epoxy on a huge crack like that, but for bullseyes... yeah, it definitely works. I used a 'vacuum' style plunger system for mine, when I chipped the screen on my Outback in Colorado. 10k miles later... its still good :)
I was surprised by Meg's willingness to take on challenges. If it were me, I would order an aftermarket windshield made in China and replace it, which is currently inexpensive. When I was young, I often did this repair in order to pass the vehicle inspection for American military personnel.
Not sure if in Canada your auto insurance company has full windshield coverage available, but I always elect that coverage here in the States. Also, I recall your VW has a crack in the windshield. Did you try to repair that as well? How are you managing to get cracks in windshields of your vehicles? :) All your videos are very informative and priceless!!! Best wishes always.
We do have insurance options up here however, up here, we get new chips and cracks in our windshields every few months or so, so it's not really feasible to constantly be replacing our windshields unless the cracks/chips are impacting your field of vision. In fact, the last time I had my truck's windshield replaced, 2 days later I got a massive crack in it! And you're absolutely right! I do have a crack in my VW which I haven't yet filled, but should, so that it doesn't spread further. So glad you're enjoying the videos, thanks very much for watching!
Hello Meg! I'm a subscriber lives in south Korea and I always enjoy watching your videos. I applaud your courage. Please continue to show great performances!! 😁🎉 Now I'm staying at a hotel in Montreal. I really love Canada 🫡💯
$500.00 is actually a reasonable price for a new windshield, but since the crack didn't go all the way to the other side it is worth the DiY resin kits.
Wasn't a bad result overall, those kits seem to work better on windscreen chips than cracks of any real length. Have to ask how did you manage to get a 70" crack? Was it small and got bigger over time or has it always been that size? Can't imagine what hit it to cause it to be that size if it was always quite a long crack.
I agree, not a bad result at all! But yes, they do seem to work better on smaller cracks from what I had found on TH-cam. That crack started off as a rock chip and then after driving it on rough roads it just spread. It's actually very common to get rock chips every few months or so around here (and also super common to see trucks with full span cracks exactly like that around here too lol!)
@Meg.August I thought some of the roads over here in Ireland were rough, to get that kind of thing potentially every few months...ouch. The car glazing epair industry in that area of Canada must be booming.😬
Wondering if the RainX, harder to scrape off, will last. I'm thinking the DIY might reappear and/or not hold as well. But what I love about your vids is like "Let's try it out". I've always wondered why they put limits on what they'll fix. like who came up with that 12" limit and why? I think it some lawyer somewhere.
Thanks so much! Might as well give things a try, right?! Also, I always like seeing if the "limits", as you were saying, are really a hard line, or if there's wiggle room to what 'they' say, lol! I'm also curious to see how long this fix will last, I'll keep you posted if anything changes! Thanks for watching!
Hello Meg. You should only drive this car to the workshop. The windshield is important for the structural rigidity of a car. In the worst case scenario, you risk the health of yourself or others. In Germany you would immediately be stopped by the police and you would not be allowed to drive it one meter until it was repaired. Even if a repair is expensive, it is no comparison to the value of your health.
Thanks for your concern, Daniel! Up here, we get new chips and cracks in our windshields every few months or so, so it's not really feasible to constantly be replacing our windshields unless the cracks/chips are impacting your field of vision.
If you had full Glass insurance coverage the glass would be free. Just call Safelite. Some states will fail you at your yearly inspection, even with professionally 'repaired' glass.
@@Meg.August hey btw if you haven't found him already you should check out vice grip garage... just watching derek work will teach you so much and he has the same energy as you Haha!
I think part of the intent of these kits is to keep the water out and try to prevent the damage getting any worse. You’re going to need a new windshield given the length of that crack, so hopefully your insurance (or this video) covers it 😎
Yes, ideally I'd replace the windshield but to be honest I get a new chip or crack every few months or so driving these roads, so up here we tend to wait until they get really bad before replacing them. Thanks for watching!
Must admit the DIY one did more than what I expected them to. But don’t think I’ve ever heard of anyone in uk repairing a crack that would be longer than just half the width of a windscreen. For the MOT (cars over three years old have a yearly inspection to make sure they are road worthy and safe)you are not allowed to have cracks longer than 10mm in line of the drivers vision and 40mm anywhere else. And seen someone get pulled by police for taking a car up for sale out for test drive but the price of the car was written in crayon across the screen in large numbers 😂. I’m shocked that a crack that large is allowed, I’d find that so distracting. Have you tried Rain X screen wash? Brought some recently and love how rain drops just bead and roll down screen, but if it’s light rain, you do get a little smearing for a few seconds.
It's funny, I've actually gotten this comment a lot! Seems like in lots of places/countries, this would not be allowed but here they are pretty relaxed about it *so long as the crack doesn't impeded your vision* or is extreme/excessively damaged. It's very common to see this type of a full windshield crack, and cracks/chips in general. Our roads are sanded and brined in the winter and we have lots of gravel roads. I get new chips in my windshields every few months, and to be honest, the last time I had my truck's windshield replaced, I got a massive rock chip in it 2 days later!! So I think that's why they don't enforce that as much here, you'd be replacing your windshield on a near-monthly basis lol!
In my country, car insurance companies have the option to include windshield cracked replacement in the insurance. do you have that also in your country?
You're so pretty and the way you present topics are refreshing and fun. Also, you always try to do it in a smart way or logical approach which is enjoyable to see from a pretty women as well.
The reason the rainx didn't do as well as the off brand on the rock chip is you put more resin in the offbrand. If you had added more on the rain x theywould likely be identical.
Up here, we get new chips and cracks in our windshields every few months or so, so I honestly don't remember when I got these ones because you kind of just get used to the dings and pings happening constantly lol!
@Meg.August Really, I'm in Vegas, and the only thing you worry about when driving was those big trucks that carries rocks, and we get about 113° weather in summer, so you had to lower your windows a little to let the hot air escape..
@@billocampo1365 In the winter we (no joke) get hundreds of micro dings in our windshields - it's almost like getting sandblasted, because our highways are sanded. Sometimes there are bigger rocks on the highways that get flung up by semi's and ya, it's literally like driving through a sandstorm! It's wild!
Happy Saturday everyone. In todays episode of Meg takes on the world she tackles the dreaded cracked windshield. Who hasn't been there? Not sure about Canada but in the states its pretty common for this repair to be covered by insurance so this was very helpful for those who have wondered if they can repair it themselves. All in all I would said even though you could still slightly see the crack from the inside, not all was lost because the small void that is the crack is now sealed and should help to keep it from weakening further and spidering off into different directions. At least that's my prediction and hopefully Meg will keep us updated. Also, was it just me or did anyone else notice the drivers side marker lamp wasn't illuminated at time marker 45 when she pulled into the garage? Great video Meg, see you next week
Thank you Rob! We do have insurance options for windshield damage but up here, we get new chips and cracks in our windshields every few months or so, so to me it feels wasteful to constantly be replacing them! I generally wait until a crack is impacting my vision, and honestly I'm pretty happy with the result from these inexpensive repair kits and yes hopefully it will help those bullseye cracks from spidering, I'll keep you posted! And yes, you're right, my driver's side light is doing funny things, I've got to look into that. I think I've got a loose wire or something because later in the video it seemed to be working fine again?! So might be an upcoming project! Have a great week! See you soon.
Did you check your local laws on this? In the UK it's illegal to fix cracks like that. You can fix stone chips up to a certain size, but that's about it. Otherwise good job.
Thank you! Up here, we get new chips and cracks in our windshields every few months or so, so it's not really feasible to constantly be replacing our windshields unless the cracks/chips are impacting your field of vision.
Not sure how it works in Canada but I have full glass coverage on all my cars. I went though 3 in a like a year cost me $0 and my 1 car has a $1200 windshield so the insurance is worth it

I am disqualified from giving a Valid Opinion, but I am thinking the cold and lack of sunlight might have been a factor. I don't know how or why, but I think better results could have been achieved. When I fix my door glass, I shall report my results.
lol, $4 is not really wayyyy cheaper, and curious why you would prefer to have the resin that is easier to break apart and wear down over time from the "budget" product? The Rain-X product is clearly a stronger resin per your experience, which will last longer and resist more future impact over time.
We get new chips and cracks in our windshields every few months or so up here, so it's not really feasible to constantly be replacing them unless they are impacting your field of vision.
Not just cosmetic although that is a benefit! The bullseye cracks being filled in now no longer impact my field of vision, as well as will prevent them from spider cracking further.
Followers like to have their comments acknowledged, doesn't look like that's happening in your videos, which I really enjoy! It would help your channel grow much more quickly as people will love the interaction and would be more inclined to spread the word.

I've debated doing something like this before it gets worse, seeing this video gave me the confidence that I can do it myself. Thanks, Meg! For once the TH-cam algorithm did something helpful for me!
TH-cam put you in my algorithm and I’m glad it did! Great videos from a person who admits they are a rookie and makes mistakes. Excellent work!
I appreciate that, thank you! Thanks for watching!
Thanks! And yes, I agree, at least those bullseye cracks won't spread now as well. Thanks for watching!
That's so sweet, Terry, thank you! Really appreciate that. Have a great week!
Hey, Meg, it’s really nice to see a fellow Canadian practicing DIY. I really enjoy your videos and think you’re doing a fantastic job! Keep it up :)
Thanks very much, Jonathan! Appreciate that!
@@mrpbright Good to know, thank you!
This is the best presentation I have seen on this thank you
Great video, Love how your not afraid to tackle any project. Plus your honesty ! Your great , Love watching.
Really appreciate that, Andy, thank you!
Thank you! I didn't have any issues with it in the winter
@@Meg.August same here the screen can chip anytime if the chip is less than 25mm the windscreen company repair it free of charge on your insurance
This is the uk standard of the windscreen to pass its mot test
Yes, as a windscreen is crucial to a driver's visibility, an MOT takes into consideration the state of your windscreen and the impact any damage may have on the driver's view.
You’re so awesome and I will say, I’m a perfectionist, too but because I am, I don’t trust myself to get the results that I expect when I do something.
Your projects always turn out great and you’re an inspiration to me.
You’re awesome Meg! Keep doing what you’re doing!
My most looked forward to TH-camr! Loved the review.👍👍👍👍
That's really nice, thank you Joseph! Glad you enjoyed this!
Another Fantastic Video. Cheers from Port Aransas, Texas.
Thank you Paul!
i tired the Rain-X kit on my Honda Fit after getting hit by a gravel truck "gun shot" to my windshield .
It's a great inexpensive solution!
Nice work, I always wondered if these types of kits work at all! Great video!👍
Thank you!
Wow I didn’t even know this was a thing ! Thanks Meg!
No worries! Thanks for watching!
I tried the Rain-x repair kit. It worked - sort of. Some parts of the crack filled in while other parts didn’t. I would give it a 50% success.
Ya they're definitely not a 100% fix, but definitely help!
Great Effort!
Did you really kneel on your hood to clean your window? 🤠
Your repair could have gone down hill really quick right there!
Excellent Video! I give you ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐5 stars for your review! Thanks Meg!
Thanks very much! Appreciate that @greyjackson2159! I'm glad you enjoyed it
Thank you Meg! Always great to hear from you my friend 🙂Great job as always 👊🏻👍🏻 God Bless 🙏🏻 Appreciate you 🫶🏻
Thank you so much! Have a great weekend
Great video again ,is the 2 product available at Canadian Tire, meg
Thanks so much! The DIY budget kit (orange one) was not available at Canadian Tire surprisingly! but the Rain-X one was
I was surprised by Meg's willingness to take on challenges.
All your videos are very informative and priceless!!!
Amazing energy. As usual
Thanks so much, Frank!
Hello from Montana, Just discovered you.Pretty impressed, you've succeeded at some pretty big jobs.

Potential content idea.
Replacing cabin filters in both vehicles. Probably not very intense but may work out if you do both.
Thanks for the suggestion!
Hello Meg! I'm a subscriber lives in south Korea and I always enjoy watching your videos. I applaud your courage. Please continue to show great performances!! 😁🎉
Now I'm staying at a hotel in Montreal. I really love Canada 🫡💯
Thanks so much @Hoon0447 ! Enjoy your stay in Montreal!
$500.00 is actually a reasonable price for a new windshield, but since the crack didn't go all the way to the other side it is worth the DiY resin kits.
Great video meg and good info how to diy your own windshield repaire
Thanks so much! I'm glad you found this to be good information, that's great!
The car glazing
epair industry in that area of Canada must be booming.😬
I hope your windshield repair goes well I like watching your video it’s so nice to meet you

Nicest hairdo I've seen on a mechanic yet 😂
If you had full Glass insurance coverage the glass would be free. Just call Safelite. Some states will fail you at your yearly inspection, even with professionally 'repaired' glass.
Okay how about installing a used windshield from a junkyard. That would be a true challenge.
I swore that I'd never do this, but... FIRST! 😁
Lol! Appreciate you being here, thanks!
I had a tiny little bullet hole style debt crack... Tried the 3m kit no deal....
That's too bad!
@@Meg.August hey btw if you haven't found him already you should check out vice grip garage... just watching derek work will teach you so much and he has the same energy as you Haha!
you can buy the razor blade handle at auto part store it easy and fast to scrape . thank .
Meg how is the windshield doing now? Did you replace it?
The main thing is they prevent the crack from expanding while you save money to have the windshield replaced.
Just wondering, how did you get those cracks.
See you soon.

lol, $4 is not really wayyyy cheaper, and curious why you would prefer to have the resin that is easier to break apart and wear down over time from the "budget" product? The Rain-X product is clearly a stronger resin per your experience, which will last longer and resist more future impact over time.
your windshield provides 60% of the strength of your roof and should be replaced when the crack is large

That's cosmetic reasons? The stability of the glass is broken anyway.
Not just cosmetic although that is a benefit! The bullseye cracks being filled in now no longer impact my field of vision, as well as will prevent them from spider cracking further.
you could have cut the strips in half length ways in the cheaper kit and then you would have had ten strips
