Hey man just wanted to say thanks for taking the time to make this video. My son's truck needed this repair and I was low on funds and time. The video was so perfect I not only handled the repair but was able to get out of the Texas heat(112 heat index yesterday) faster. Thank you brother, I want you to know this 20 min thing you did 4 years ago is still helping people tremendously. Thank you for sharing the knowledge and may God bless you sir.
Nice job, this is exactly what makes TH-cam great. People helping other people out. Sure I could fumble through this job figuring it out as I go but why not watch someone else figure out the hard parts and instruct you through it! Thanks man.
I notched out my fan shroud in a parking lot with a sheet wall knife for anybody unable to get to a sawzall. Putting that there was a GREAT TIP. Thank you
Having no clue how to replace my water pump, Your video was straight forward, which was perfect for me. Replaying this several times, I was able to notch out shroud, replace pump and assemble back in 2 hours, 10 mins. You saved my ass and over $290 in labor. Thank you Sir!
Excellent, straight forward video. As a single mother in nursing school, you just saved me so much money. SO grateful people make these kinds of videos. Thanks Steve (and Steve's wife the videographer !)
Sir you a damn Genius I wrestled with my fan shroud for 20 minutes trying to get it out to change the water pump after seeing your video I get to Sharon out of the Envoy I went out and cut mine
Just want to say thanks for this video! Well done. Dealership wanted $700 for this job. I replaced water pump $88 AC Delco, $25 belt, plus antifreeze. Thanks! I did notch the shroud to allow clearance past the radiator neck. Pulled both the shroud and clutch fan together straight out with no problem. THANKS!!
Thank you for the very informative lesson. I did exactly what you told me & how to cut the U shape cutout & trust me it definitely saved a lot of time. I had the job done within 45 minutes . I owe you a a few ice cold beers . THANKS !!!!!!
Most thorough video I have ever watched. Changed mine out just as easy...thanks the that cut trick. Thank you so much for posting. Was quoted 500$. Did mine for 65$
🛠🏆👍 Your video is the best one out there for this job. I especially like your shroud notch tip at the 7:00 mark. Yes, GM should have allowed for that when the shroud was made! Your solution is brilliant and a real time-saver. I also like that your explanation was clear and straight forward with no annoying hip-hop/rap/thrash metal “music” blasting away in the background. Only amateurs include music like that. Like the Ford 4.6 water pump, the TrailBlazer/Envoy is one of the easiest ones to do- although my Crown Victoria was even easier. 😆 Thank you for taking time to make this excellent walk-through tutorial.
Thank you thank you. You saved me hundreds of dollars. I think I got a quote to replace it for $800. Needless to say I went with the ladder...DIY. Pain in the butt but It was worth it. 🍻
Solid video, dude. As someone who has done this job to anyone watching and preparing to: Do not even consider trying to get that shroud out without cutting out the notch described here. Saves a ridiculous amount of time and frustration!
Completed the process today and got it done per you instructions. While the fan was out I took the liberty to replace the belt, new tensioner, pully and the top coolant hose. Thank you for the excellent video.
Thanks for the "cut" tip. I have that shroud & fan ready to pull out but I couldn't force it past the radiator neck. I jumped onto this video and found your great solution.
The water pump on my 06 TB EXT is about to go it’s very wobbly and making a horrible noise. This is one of the best vids I’ve found. Thanks for the help.
Great video . Prior to me watching , I was surely going to let the professional do it. Dealing with removing the radiator,,I DIDNT WANT TO DO. After seeing how you cut the cover , Bam! Too easy. I didn’t have that cutting tool you have. Instead , I drilled a hole on each side of the cover (upper radiator) then took for tin snips and cut. Great video . Thanks !!!
My trailblazer broke down on the way to work. Limped it to my nearest auto parts store and changed it right in the parking lot. My belt was shredded and truck was heavily smoking haha . But you helped…. A TON.
Watched your video today and was able to knock it out just as you did. Never worked on a car before. Your tutorial made my experience painless. Thank you.
This 2 year old video helps still man. Thank you! NOTE: On the 2002 Envoy, if you've never replaced the fan shroud, there are two rubber bumpers on either side that are held in by hooks which will take a bit of wrestling to dislodge from the shroud.
@@mjnesscatt I fought 'em off by muscling them about using a pair of pliers. They're rubber so they will give as you guide them over the plastic hooks. I made a video showing how it came back together for ya: th-cam.com/video/83_CYrb07XM/w-d-xo.html
Thanks for this video brother and for taking the time to show us the right way to do the job !! I change it two years back and took about 3 hours , this time took me 45 mins
Thank you. You walked me through my first ever pump change after my one seized and shredded the belt and pissed coolant everywhere. I know nothing about cars, and I did it thanks to you.
Well done explain to everything slowly and perfectly thanks I have some friends that said it was going to cost over $4,000 so I will give them your video save them a lot of money they're just getting married
Thanks Steve, this video was very helpful. I struggled to remove the fan nut until I stumbled onto an interesting solution. I put a 13mm closed end wrench on one of the four pully bolts and spun the pulley counter clockwise and the wrench landed on top of the crankshaft pulley. Then when I tried to loosen the large fan nut, the 13mm wrench stopped the pully from turning because it was resting on the crankshaft pulley and at the same time keeping the pully bolt tight. This allowed the fan nut to come loose. I think I only stumbled on this option because I had already removed the belt and could see the crankshaft pulley. Thanks again for the video!
THANK YOU FOR THIS VIDEO! wish I would’ve seen it a year ago when my water pump and radiator pooped out on me, would’ve saved me from being miss spaghetti arms and many hours lol. This job only took me about an hour and a half and saved me $450+! Thank you again :)
I replaced the water pump yesterday on my 2005 Chevy Trail Blazer. I just tapped the big nut of the fan clutch and used a long screwdriver wedged between the pump pulley screws to loosen it. Thanks.
My water pump blew out when I was on the high way and threw and shredded my belt on me. I figured it was the water pump because the massive hole in the front of it. Thanks for a step by step on replacing it.
I love this video so much. Thank you so much. Not all heroes wear capes. Wherever you are I hope you're doing amazing & I owe you a beer for helping me with this lol
I'm glad to hear it helped, that cut is a major time saver, not sure why they didn't just incorporate a gap in the shroud from the factory. Thanks for watching and commenting!

Steve, Thank you so much! I have an AC compressor clutch and or coil to replace on my Envoy with the 4.2. With the fan and shroud out of the way, I should be able to do it with the compressor on the motor.... Gonna save me time, money, and busted knuckles. You Rock!
Awesome video THANK YOU !!!! so much .The best video .Im just learning to work on these newer cars .I feel more confident to do this job .I'm great at working on my 55 Chevy but these newer cars are confusing ,I guess its just getting with the program .Again thank you very much.
Super helpful video. Saved me hundreds of dollars! I really appreciate the level of detail. Made the job very easy. Btw, the bolts for attaching the clutch to the fan get 15-20ftlbs. At least on mine.
Just did this a few days ago. The notch is a great idea. Of course I'm a few days late on that one. Not only will it save time but might save your radiator. There is really no way to get the shroud out without putting alot of stress on the water neck of the radiator plus gouging the fins with the bottom of the shroud.
Excelente, muy buen trabajo paso a pasito muy despacito, esplicado detalladamente y con las herramientas nesesariss, nada es difícil, gracias por compartir, buen día.
Thanks for the video, I did mine too but I kept the little piece I cut out of the shroud and hot glued it back in when I was done, just to keep all that air flowing like it did before I cut it out
@Steve Young GREAT REFERENCE! I did this job yesterday and the Thermostat and ECT Sensor and this helped a lot! My tip to all is: if everything goes smooth except getting those damn Trans cooling lines back into their slots- you can take a Dremel tool and trim them down and it will fall into place like butter PLUS the cooling lines will still sit where they belong..they just wont "snap" into place but will have support. Once again EXCELLENT reference for doing this job correctly! Also, I believe the giant clutch nut wrench is size 1 7/16(Item #25193) ordered from Ace hardware.
Great Job man!! ill be doing this repair this weekend and I'm completely confident I can do this. When you made mention of the cut out on the fan shroud I was thinking "fucking Right!" Thank you for this video ! Again great video ! to the point not too much talking and bullshit and you obviously know your stuff!!
This video is great, but you dont have to cut the shroud - if you undo the fan motor bolts push back toward radiator then shroud eill just slide up past extruded pipe housing.
The best ,the best video, hey guys doing videos how to repair cars or trucks this is the way to do videos “I called waste of time videos “the others and gracias Señor you did it GREAT VIDEO
Great video!! Thank you for putting this information out. I have a 2005 Trailblazer with the same problem, but I'm not sure if I have to replace the fan clutch or not.
Steve , Thank you so much for show to us how easy is to do repairs on our cars by our selves and save alot of money and time...you are the man ! congrats ! Greetings and blessings from El Paso Texas & Cd Juárez Chihuahua México.....
The big nut is a 1-3/8" on mine. Was able to use a 1-1/2 " was all I had on hand. If you have a big wrench that fits it you can just smack it with a hammer and it usually will break it loose, RH thread, just use your other hand to catch it so it doesn't hit the sensor to the left side (looking at it) similar to the way he loosened the water pump pulley bolts. I like your idea of cutting the shroud to get it to come straight up and out since the fan is interlocked into the shroud you can't remove it like most cars. I don't think the later models are like that. I've changed them before and don't remember it being this difficult. Yeah, best to draw a diagram of the belt routing if you don't have a sticker or diagram moulded into the shroud. Good video, tell the wife she done good.
O'Reilley had nothing bigger than 1 3/8". When you're out and about you don't wanna jam out to Lowe's or Home Depot for that size. Thankfully my neighbor had a crescent wrench big enough. I went out and sent a big amount for a plumber wrench for nothing 😆
Steve - Excellent video. Very detailed and time saving. Why did you replace the Fan Clutch was it bad or is it just a good time to replace it when the water pump goes bad? Thanks again this is going to be big help.
If the electric fan clutch fails it can cause water pump failure, so due to the labor involved and the mileage on the vehicle I felt it best to simply change both while I was right there. Thanks for watching and commenting!
GREAT, video, thank you! BUT it’s 35 INCH pounds and then 89 INCH pounds for those small 10mm head water pump bolts to block You’ll break or strip them if you use FOOT pounds
Thank you for posting this video I could not figure out the tool to use to hold us fan clutch in place they have a room tool at AutoZone and it was a piece of you know what what's your video was straight to the point thank you again
Steve you ROCK buddy! I just have 1 problem I ran into. The pulley is stuck onto the water pump. Bolts came out easy but the pulley won't budge. Can you help a fellow New Hampshire home mechanic? Live Free or Die!
Do you have access to a torch? Even a propane one just to heat up the pulley a little and give it a rap with a hammer? Otherwise I would spray pb blaster and hit it. Not like we are worried at this point about hurting the pump itself as it's junk and is getting replaced. Those are my thoughts. Thanks for watching!
If you're worried about the hole in your shroud affecting cooling performance, Gorilla Tape works very well to patch it up when you're done, and it blends in with your shroud so it doesn't look too bad!
You don't have to tighten the big fan nut. It will self-tighten when the engine starts. It won't unscrew or fall off when you shut the engine off. It'll be just fine.

Bro how can I send you some beer money this video just made my life so much easier. My Trailblazer will finally pass inspection again after two years.
That's awesome! I'm glad to hear she will be a legal beagle once more.

Good job. My partner and I now just replace waterpump without removing shroud. It is not to bad. Got it down to 1 hr.
Thanks! Followed video and great video.

Great video. I've had 4 water pumps replaced since 04 and now its 2020. Still running strong with no major issues.
The notch is a good idea. I was told to cut the shroud in half but this is way better thanks
I replaced the water pump yesterday on my 2005 Chevy Trail Blazer. I just tapped the big nut of the fan clutch and used a long screwdriver wedged between the pump pulley screws to loosen it. Thanks.
Thank you very much for the video helped alot got the water pump done less than 3 hrs 👍😁
Thank You So Much. My brother just got finished with it. The transmission lines that snap into the shroud were the biggest pain.
This is gonna be a lifesaver. Thanks for the great step by step tutorial man!
Your welcome!
My water pump blew out when I was on the high way and threw and shredded my belt on me. I figured it was the water pump because the massive hole in the front of it. Thanks for a step by step on replacing it.
Thanks so much. One of the easiest way to get through.
Just used your video to replace my water pump so thanks! I cut out the little piece as well! Quick and easy
Very nice video... Nice job of video and narration.. Great tip on the shroud cut as well.. Cheers..
Wow! great video, thanks for the very clear step by step instructions.
Great instructional video, simple and straight forward.

Best way to save money, do it yourself. Thank you for that advice, and saving time, by cutting the shroud..👍🏽
Thanks Steve! Tom from Ohio. 2005 Envoy. Not an issue yet , just planning ahead so I'm ready to go.... if/when it does fail
I love this video so much. Thank you so much. Not all heroes wear capes. Wherever you are I hope you're doing amazing & I owe you a beer for helping me with this lol
Thank you, Steve. That was a really good video start to finish. I like the shroud cut-out tip. Good instruction/explanation as you went.
I'm glad to hear it helped, that cut is a major time saver, not sure why they didn't just incorporate a gap in the shroud from the factory. Thanks for watching and commenting!
Supper good video with time saving tips. All done by a real man out doors in the winter.
Thanks for watching and commenting! Things always seem to break in the winter.
Good video, thanks for posting. Shroud cutout hack looks like a real time saver. I will definitely go this route.
Great video. Excellent positioning and descriptions. Awesome tool description too.
I caught the 10mm water pump bolt tightening mistake but that was the only one.
I usually dont need a torque wrench anyways. 89 ft ponds is way too much. haha
Id say 25 ft pounds is good. Thank you my good man.
Thanks!, yeah, 89 inch lbs was what it should be
Thank you for the step by step tutorial now I can do it myself and save some money 👍
Your welcome, let me know if you run into trouble, Thanks for watching and commenting!
Steve,
Thank you so much! I have an AC compressor clutch and or coil to replace on my Envoy with the 4.2. With the fan and shroud out of the way, I should be able to do it with the compressor on the motor.... Gonna save me time, money, and busted knuckles. You Rock!

Awesome video. thank you. I'm about to tackle my 02 Envoy water pump.

Just what I wanted. Stright forward to the point. Thank you
Glad you found it helpful, thank you for watching and commenting!

Great video!! Thank you for putting this information out. I have a 2005 Trailblazer with the same problem, but I'm not sure if I have to replace the fan clutch or not.
I'm having to replace the water pump, and thought I might as well do the fan clutch as well
Thank you for taking the time to do this
Thank you for the video Steve, really simplified the repair.
Brilliantly done. Thanks!
Thank you for your clear explanation 👍 you did a good job amigo 👏
Good job sir, and good job wifey for filming it correctly. 👍👍😁

GREAT, video, thank you!
BUT it’s 35 INCH pounds and then 89 INCH pounds for those small 10mm head water pump bolts to block
You’ll break or strip them if you use FOOT pounds
So wish I saw that before I did it... On a positive note, I haven't had any leaks with just 4 bolts on my pump.
Thank you for posting this video I could not figure out the tool to use to hold us fan clutch in place they have a room tool at AutoZone and it was a piece of you know what what's your video was straight to the point thank you again

Take an air chisel to the nut end for a whack or two. It will definitely never move. Taking it off, this helps too.
Agreed on cutting the notch. Dont forget to mention the un clipping of Tran cooling lines
outstanding tutorial and above excellent advice on cutting the shroud! thanyou so much
