Thank you for making this video. I changed my thermostat today after watching this video a couple of times. Helped a lot and I knew exactly what to do before I started the job. Thanks!
Very good video, I am a woman and never worked on a car before . I have now done two hub assembly starter alternator front drive shaft brake's and rotors. Gives me satisfaction to do work myself. Thanks for the instructions!
Ty since last post I’ve now done fan clutch water pump quick struts upper control arm and ball joints end links and bushings on sway bar. Changed diff fluids and camshaft sensor I know there’s a lot more I’m forgetting but with TH-cam there’s nothing you can’t do!! Granted if they say takes an hour I know it will take me at least 3 but that’s fine I actually enjoy doing it as long as weather permits

Nice video, I didn't take all those steps. I took off the driver's side wheel and removed it through the upper control arm. I saved myself a lot of time and money. Thanks
I was an HVAC Eng at GM, this video is spot on. Don't blame the engineer, it's all about the engine first then the/routing and eventually the assembly first build. Nice video and accurate.
Thank you and I'm sorry you guys have to deal with limited space. My 1st car was a 1970 Camaro with 250 straight six and two speed powerglide. Room for days upon days to do whatever was needed under the hood, you could literally sit on one side of the engine bay and I on another and we could close the hood lol. Nowadays they try and cram everything possible into the tightest space possible... You would think that an inline six in an SUV there would have been plenty of room to give easy access to mechanics to repair. Anyways, Thanks for watching and commenting!
Before I buy a used car, I like to get an idea of the DIY jobs that I can expect to have by watching videos. I really like the structure of the video. Pointing out your steps w/o having to watch you wrench each bolt. The video was lit up nice and clear, with good views all the way through. People like you give the confidence to people like me to take these type of projects on. Having one disabled hand that likes to drop things I would probably magnetize my socket for those bolts I fear dropping. Keep up the great work.
Nice video. I have a 2004 trailblazer and I've had TWO thermostats replaced. When the shop told me the car needed a new thermostat, I was all ready to do it myself. I come from the days where all engine blocks had the small diamond shaped cover..with the dome on top....always on top of the block at the front. It was loosen two bolts..pull the cover off, pull out the old thermostat, put in the new, put the cover back on, then tighten two bolts. It was literally a 5 minute job. When the shop told me you had to take the alternator off....I told them to do it.
I have had the misfortune of having to do this job more than once. As a refresher I pulled up this video and it is by far the best one I have seen on this topic. The tip on how to get the bottom alternator bolt was especially priceless and I agree having the battery out of the way greatly simplified this operation . Thanks for such a great video!
This video was the best I found for doing this job. I am a TH-cam mechanic and was able to follow along and get the job done without any issues. My 07 Trailblazer had a rigid line next to the bottom alternator bolt. Maybe for the transmission fluid cooler I don't know but I could not come through the wheel well to unscrew that bolt. I used a combination wrench and a lot of patience. Anyway thanks Steve you saved me some money.
Thanks for the tutorial. The way you show and explain the process makes it easier for me to replace the thermostat on my own saving lots of cash I can't afford. Once I check that I have the proper tools I will go to work on it. Hopefully I will find this video again and be able to let you and your viewers how it went for me.
This is definitely one of the better videos. I love your explanations without all the frills and fuss. We are about to do our 03 Envoy. Thank you. wish us luck lol.
Most detailed and thorough video I've seen, thanks man, using it as a refresher I'm ready to tackle my envoy, done this before on my mom's trailblazer , but didn't think about using the wheel well method, and yep I lost that bracket bolt bein the alternator, won't happen again , God bless
Thank you so much! I literally just finished getting the Thermostat switched in 05 Chevy Trailblazer thanks to your tutorial. For some reason my fender well was way tighter so it didn't work but I 2 clicked it since you showed the alternative. My hands and forearms got tore up from that annoying battery tray. I think I may have overfilled my reservoir because after driving back it was leaking but then it stopped. I hope that's what it is and not a leak. Again thanks Steve Young, you weren't just a great QB but a great TH-camr.
I found the gasket had fallen out during allignment and it leaked through the night! I went and got some sealant Re-did the job way easier than the first time around and now under my car is dry as the desert. what a journey! Hope I don't have to do that again twice anytime soon >
Thanks to you I got the truck up and running again didn’t have To take off the fan for the housing it was pretty in and out hope you do more videos on that truck so I can take a look thank you my God
Thank you so much for posting this instructional video! I'm a divorced mum with kids and you just saved me $$! Also this video is great for folks needing to replace their Chevy trailblazer alternator. #ChevyTrailblazerAlternatorReplacement #ChevyTrailblazerThermastatReplacement
That was a very nicely done video. For somebody who’s not a professional video editor or a professional mechanic, I found this be quite helpful. If I could make a couple recommendations they would be invest in an air compressor and a good quality 3/8 air ratchet and 3/8 impact gun for jobs like this. They would’ve cut the time in half. Alternately a rechargeable impact would have been helpful on many of those bolts if a compressor and air tools are not in the budget.
Thank you for this video! You now have another subscriber. At least on the earlier models of the Trailblazers, the locations of the thermostat and the Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor (ECTS) are in the same general area: below the alternator! Sometime during the production of the 2007 model year, on the new Envoys and Trailblazers with the I-6 engine, in their Greedy Wisdom, GM made a design change. On my 2008 Trailblazer with the I-6 engine, GM changed the location of the ECTS, placing it way back under the firewall cowl, on the left side (Passenger Side) of the cylinder head, and very close to the left rear corner, where it cannot be seen w/o an endoscope! I had to buy an endoscope that connects to my I-Pad to verify the location the ECTS, and and also to assist me in replacing that sensor. All of the air intake duct and the heat shield on the exhaust manifold has to be removed. The plug in the wire harness that connects to the ECTS is mounted on top of the valve cover very near the back of the cylinder head. The wiring harness to that plug is very short... so short that once the plug is broken free of the valve cover, you cannot bring it forward far enough to separate the male plug from the female socket easily... a couple more inches of wire would not have cost GM that much! I know all this because I had to replace that ECTS on my 2008 Trailblazer. Tomorrow I will be replacing the thermostat and its housing on my Trailblazer... using your most-excellent video as a guide. In closing, I state that the vehicle-specific Haynes Repair Manuals of today are sure a sorry excuse when compared to the excellent repair manuals they used to be.
Helpful video. My AC hose bracket was not moving like in the video, so I bent it out of the way. Its aluminum, and easily bends back and forth with no problem. Impossible to get the alternator out without doing this.
Thank you for this video this was the guide on which I had to switch out our thermostat on our Trailblazer you definitely gave great step by step instructions and I felt very confident watching the video before I even started this job you save me about 300 bucks at Pep Boys here in Arizona and other shops about $250 at other shops but thank you again keep up the great work
Thank you for the video. It helped me greatly in changing the thermostat in my vehicle. Getting the bottom bolt out of the alternator was a real pain because one of the hose was in the way and it did not give when I tried to move it.
This video was great. Really good explanation to how and why you were doing what you were doing. I have watched 2 other video to replace my thermostat, but none as clear and detailed as this one. I will be changing mine tomorrow. GREAT job!!
This is very informative and saves me the time and trouble of taking the top one off and finding out it's not up there ugh... WHY???? LOL... but glad I watched this and its not so bad. I'm going to be starting on mine THANKS FOR THE VIDEO!!!
The video was a great help. The only problem I had was removing the bolt on the bottom of the alternator. All my wrenches were too long and a socket would fit because of the AC line. I ended up cutting my 15mm wrench in half and got it out. Once I got it out it was quick to put it back together.
This really helped me out, thanks a million. Only issue I had was the bottom bolt on he alternator, my '04 had a hard cooling line in the way so I had to use a gear wrench instead of going through the wheel well. Everything else was super straight forward thanks to your video.
Great job, I am having this problem and as soon as time allows and parts are purchased I will dive in and save a few bucks by not taking it to the shop
I see you also have a new Coolant temp sensor. Get this, last time on mine p0128 was the code and i changed the thermostat. Didn't fix it, so I changed the CTS and that fixed it. Now 2 years later I have P0128 again, so I changed the CTS. Still don't get hot. So tomorrow it's the thermostat!
The hose underneath the coolant hose. The smaller one is in the way of the bottom bolt for the alternator. What should I do? I dont have crows feet so idk how I'm gonna get that bolt out. Should I just try to force the hose out the way? It is very sturdy
So you were the guy that I see changed the temp sensor, you had this all apart why was the reason you replaced the sensor? Cause the temp gauge fell and AC quit? Now you're changing the thermostat which I have read solved the issue, did it solve yours?
Thank you kindly sir for your video! You saved us 200 bucks! 👍 a couple bloody knucles and a few F bombs but shes running like a champ! Liked and subscribed!
On a scale of 1-10 with 10 being most difficult how would you rate doing this job personally, I'm pretty comfortable with my trailblazer and I might end up replacing mine in the near future
Difficulty is probably around the 4 to 6 range, but like with any job if one of the bolts gets lost, or snaps etc it can become a 10. As long as you take it one step at a time it should be a pretty straightforward job. Thanks for watching and commenting!
Note to DIY-ers, when loosening the belt tensioner, look where the poster places his ratchet AND look that he does not have a socket on. You just place the naked 3/8 ratchet into the female square next to the bolt on the belt tensioner. I broke off my belt tensioner due to my own carelessness and not paying attention to the ratchet placement in the video. Successfully changed my thermostat though!
I really appreciate your videos although I would have liked to know the symptoms to what was happening to the vehicle in order for you to change the thermostat so I would get a good idea of what's going on in order for me to attempt to change a thermostat so I'm not changing the wrong thing and lose out on a lot of time money and parts 🤷🏼♀️ But good job anyway 👌🏻
Check engine light came on and gave code indicating the vehicle was not reaching proper operating temperature fast enough, which means the thermostat was likely stuck partially open.
Going in from the bottom for that under bolt it may also be easier to turn the steering wheel all the way to the left as well. That way the tire itself won't be in the way either.
Is any maintenance job on the trailblazer trivial, even the oil filter is in a ridiculous location, I am hoping the P0128 code does not come back so I am not spending two hours replacing the thermostat.
If the thermostat is stuck open can that cause the fan to continuously run no antifreeze is moving around with the cap off wasn't moving like it was ur daughter's truck after u put the thermostat in at the end of video
I need answers quick please my coolant was redish should i flush it all out ?? bought some dexcool concentrate but its orange is toping the redish coolant ok to mix with the orange one i blught i dont wanna cause a sluge build up... so again should i flush it all out or topping it off if i put back the red would be ok???
If you don't know the last time it was flushed then I would go ahead and flush it out if you have the time. The reason its more reddish than orange is the same reason green turns slightly different over time, it's old and who knows if someone used distilled water and if not certain minerals in tap water will have an effect on coolant color. Anyways, most coolant will tell you on the label if it is compatible with other colors, nowdays there are a lot of universal coolants, but you would still want one that reads Dexcool for your trailblazer. So bottom line if it's been a while, drain and fill. if you just need to top off, then your probably good just adding some dexcool compatible coolant to get you by until you can do a proper flush and fill. Thanks for watching and commenting!
@@E4EonEbay is ACdelco redish in color ? I saw a video of flushing the system and the ACDelco they used looked the same color i need are ac delco and prestone different colors or is ACDelco orange too ,?? Been trying to find answers for 3 days now need my vehicle running

@@gballs007 My thoughts exactly! We live in a Greedy World, and the auto manufacturers are designing these vehicles this way to discourage the shade tree mechanic from working on them! Adding to that, their design changes are never in favor of saving labor...no...they want more labor $$$$ for each repair! At least on the earlier models of the Trailblazers, the location of the thermostat and the Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor (ECTS) below the alternator is in the same area! Sometime during the production of the 2007 model year, on the new Envoys and Trailblazers with the I-6 engine, they made a design change. So I did this while changing my radiator… way easier to get the alternator out (that third bolt can be done within the engine bay), but that second thermostat bolt is impossible to get out.
Thanks for the vid. A couple of notes: File the edges of the battery mount. They’re Sharp and slice your forearm up while trying to get the bottom alternator bolt out. Speaking of, putting an immovable AC pressure line directly in front of that already hard to reach bottom bolt is one of the dumbest design oversights I’ve ever seen. Hey Chevy, here’s an idea: Don’t pawn off the AC line and cable routing to the bright eyed college new hire. People suggest using a box wrench but the radiator fan mage that task a serious chore. Finally used a universal joint and very long extensions and came in under the head lamp! Have to remove bumper to do that which fortunately isn’t too big a deal. Side note: Folks on Trailvoy discuss replacing thermostat without messing w alternator at all by removing the wheel.
Hey bro, at 2:17, directly to the left of your hand, right by your knuckles, do you happen to know name of sensor/plug in? I accidentally tore mine up removing the belt. I wanna say it’s something to do with cruise control
So over watched several videos for 2007 trailblazer thermostat replacement. The problem is mine is behind my power steering unit. Dont know how to remove it.
Like Steve mentioned, the tstat is actually built right into the housing itself,so the tstat and the housing are one piece essentially.Theres also a large seal/oring that sits in a groove thats machined into the block end of the housing, which means you wont have to mess with a gasket that could move around & permitex all over everything during the install, which you'd normally have to worry about cleaning up during the next tstat replacement. This design is great for preventing leaks that can occur during a tstat replacement, but the location of the housing truly sucks. Its too bad that the tstat couldn't be positioned away from the block. If it could, the existing housing could have been designed with a bolt flange at each end, with the tstat removed, then a additional housing (short) could have been designed with a bolt flange & tstat built into one end of it and hose piping at the opposite end for the radiator hose hookup. This would have put the tstat in the clear for sure.I don't think it will work though according to opinions Ive heard.*Note* for anyone replacing their water pump. The tstat is visible through the block with the water pump removed. You can check if its stuck in the open position while the wp is out, that way youll know for sure if it needs to be replaced or not without going through the trouble of removing it.
Thank You for the great video.. looks like I have to do this next on my Envoy.... I appreciate your concern for the environment, too. Animals like to lap antifreeze up- and it will kill them.
We have 3 dogs and 3 cats, and there are also other cats and wildlife that roam the neighborhood. Can never be too careful with antifreeze. thanks for watching and commenting!
It is easier to remove that bottom bolt by using a 15mm ratcheting wrench (I used one from Autozone, Duralast the one that is about 5 or 6 inches long), it fits in between the fan blades nicely and there is ample room to ratchet (you can get over a 1/4 turn in there) just ratchet it out most of the way then you can use your fingers the rest You can remove that bolt (and put it back in) in literally one minute doing it this way trust me

I actually changed one hoping to clear the code and it wound up being the other. Damn modern cars!
I just had to do this to my envoy today.. I used one of those extendo magnet to set that back bracket bolt
Good idea, thanks for watching and commenting!
I liked this video because it showed me I dont want to do this job myself!
Good vid Steve. If I have to replace mine I think i can follow that process...
Thank you thank you thank you, Excellent video saved me a whole lot of guessing and more important time.
Glad to hear it helped, thanks for watching and commenting!
Getting ready too change mine. Very informative thank you!!!!!!
I watched other videos and yours is the best.
Thanks Steve, got this job coming up!
Thank you kindly sir for your video! You saved us 200 bucks! 👍 a couple bloody knucles and a few F bombs but shes running like a champ! Liked and subscribed!
Your welcome, glad to hear it saved you some cash and you got done! Thanks for watching and subscribing!
Thanks awesome to the point video, I just saved $350.00 by replacing the thermostat on a 2008 GMC Envoy.
Thanks for watching, glad it helped!
This video was very efficient thank you
Thank you for watching and commenting!
These are only 10mm bolts. You don’t have to put the fear of God in them. 😂😂😂
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Did this fix the intermittent temp gauge not working/ a/c issue?
Gotta 02 Envoy. Engine light on, Auto Zone code reader said t-stat and housing... Temp not warm enough... Now I know what I'm in for...
Thanks
Is any maintenance job on the trailblazer trivial, even the oil filter is in a ridiculous location, I am hoping the P0128 code does not come back so I am not spending two hours replacing the thermostat.
If the thermostat is stuck open can that cause the fan to continuously run no antifreeze is moving around with the cap off wasn't moving like it was ur daughter's truck after u put the thermostat in at the end of video
What thermostat did you use 180 or 192 ? Great video
@@joenavarro9317 www.bobistheoilguy.com/forums/threads/dexcool-pink-or-orange.214626/#post-3323043 There is a thread regarding GM coolant and dexcool colors
Thanks for the video, it really helps a lot!
Thanks buddy your video helped me do the job.☺
Glad to hear it, thanks for watching and commenting!
What about putting up the one were the sensor on the passenger side.
Man! Having to remove belts and the alternator to replace a thermostat? What a project for what used to be a simple repair.
All part of the master scheme to have to take your car to mechanic/dealer for repairs...
On my 2008 Trailblazer with the I-6 engine, GM changed the location of the ECTS, placing it way back under the firewall cowl, on the left side of the cylinder head, and very close to the left rear corner, where it cannot be seen w/o an endoscope! All of the air intake duct and the heat shield on the exhaust manifold has to be removed, ant the plug in for the wire harness for the ECTS is mounted on top of the valve cover very near the back of the cylinder head. The wiring harness to that plug is very short... so short that once it is free of the valve cover, you cannot really bring it forward far enough to separate the male plug from the female socket easily. I know that because I had to replace that ECTS on my 2008 Trailblazer. Tomorrow I will be replacing the thermostat and its housing on that same vehicle.
Would I be able to bypass alternator removal if remove battery tray
Give it a try and let me know
So I did this while changing my radiator… way easier to get the alternator out (that third bolt can be done within the engine bay), but that second thermostat bolt is impossible to get out.
Thanks for the vid. A couple of notes:
File the edges of the battery mount.
Does the bracket actually serve a purpose.
Doing this tomorrow. Great job, thank you
Hey bro, at 2:17, directly to the left of your hand, right by your knuckles, do you happen to know name of sensor/plug in? I accidentally tore mine up removing the belt. I wanna say it’s something to do with cruise control
How long do you run it with the cap off, till it stops bubbling? Will it stop bubbling at some point?
Yes, you want to get as much air out of the system as possible.
Thanks, this video helped a bunch. Everything is aokay
Breaker bar to move tensioner is easier cheap on from HF works great
Awesome video dude. You just wanted a new subscriber.
Awesome video thank you for your time god speed
OK mine is still overheating changed T.stat, radiator.. clutch fan, but idk how to bleed the air out. I tried my times. The way these videos showed.
If I flush the system how much coolant and which type do I need
So over watched several videos for 2007 trailblazer thermostat replacement. The problem is mine is behind my power steering unit. Dont know how to remove it.
I've notice others have said the 07 model is different, unfortunately I don't have any experience with the 07 model :(
Very informative, I now know why it cost 300$ to have a shop do this for me 😌
Do you need to get a new housing when replacing the thermostat? Is there an advantage to replacing the housing also?
The housing and thermostat come as one unit when you buy it
Like Steve mentioned, the tstat is actually built right into the housing itself,so the tstat and the housing are one piece essentially.Theres also a large seal/oring that sits in a groove thats machined into the block end of the housing, which means you wont have to mess with a gasket that could move around & permitex all over everything during the install, which you'd normally have to worry about cleaning up during the next tstat replacement.
@@E4EonEbay I have 3 dogs, also. Plus a lot of deer and other critters that wander through the yard - and I really don't want to poison them, either.
Excellent video! Thanks much.
It is easier to remove that bottom bolt by using a 15mm ratcheting wrench (I used one from Autozone, Duralast the one that is about 5 or 6 inches long), it fits in between the fan blades nicely and there is ample room to ratchet (you can get over a 1/4 turn in there) just ratchet it out most of the way then you can use your fingers the rest
You can remove that bolt (and put it back in) in literally one minute doing it this way trust me
I used this technique. The air conditioning hose was in the way and I couldn't even see the bolt through the wheel well.
Impact with extension and knuckle is easiest way
Thanks bro! Definitely doable!
thanks for watching and commenting!
Great video! Thanks for doing it
