    I have struggled with the binding, even bought a gadget that was so supposed to make it so much easier, NOT. Your method made it easy and simple to understand. I've been following your tutorials for about a year and have completed projects with ease and I'm always pleased with the outcome.

    And now you can use a Folded Corner Clipper for the binding end!! It's great. I used your method until that ruler came out. With very small projects I have to join straight seams. Lovely fabrics, and thanks for the tip in insulate batting, I always get confused!

    love this tutorial. I wrote to the makers of insulbrite as I couldn't work out which was the right side to use. they informed me there isn't a right or wrong side as the insulation is sandwiched between two pieces of thin batting which is then needle punched making either side being right.

    • @philby611
      @philby611 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Dorien Reed Good to know. I've used Insulbrite before and didn't really pay attention to what would be the right or wrong side. I have found that you can't use it by itself to protect you from the hot object, you really do need to add at least one more layer of regular batting in your project so you don't get burned.

    • @Redrevenge2010

    for the people who want to learn how to make continuous bias binding from a fat quarter watch McCalls video on how to make it. I spent two days trying to figure it out and watched that video and it was a breeze once I learned the trick of marking the top and bottom edges with #1 and the sides with # 2. It was the key.

    Wonderful tutorial. I have made a few of these now, the issue I am having is with my machine. With so many layers to go through, I am getting looping at the needle and skipped stitches. May I ask if you have had this issue and if not what type of machine are you using. Thank you so much for all the great tutorials.

    • @ShabbyFabrics
      @ShabbyFabrics  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Chris - In our experience, some of the more light weight machines tend to skip stitches when going through very thick layers of material, so we would suggest increasing the presser foot pressure to keep the layers together. Glad you like this project! -Michelle

What I did ,I had fall 10inch fall fabric so I cut them up quilted them together and then put the full layer cake as the backing so far so good . Can you machine sew the binding?

    • @ShabbyFabrics

      Thanks for watching Linda! Yes, you can machine sew the binding. If you sew the binding to the back of your project first then you can turn to the front and sew with a decorative stitch on top.

    • @ShabbyFabrics
      @ShabbyFabrics  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Sherry Buras Great questions! Unless otherwise stated we always use MasterPiece thread by Superior Thread. A standard needle that comes with your machine will work with this project! Here is a link to all of our MasterPiece Thread: www.shabbyfabrics.com/MasterPiece-Thread-C1627.aspx

      +Shabby Fabrics Thank you! So it's ok to use 50 wt (this weight thing is still confusing) for projects, even rag quilts? Or is there a different weight for those?

    • @ShabbyFabrics
      @ShabbyFabrics  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Sherry Buras yes, it is okay. The thread we sell is very good "multi-purpose" thread that can be used for most quilting and crafting.

    YARDS

    • @ShabbyFabrics
      @ShabbyFabrics  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      In order to create bias binding from a Fat Quarter, you will first cut your FQ on a 45 degree angle then cut 2.5 inch strips from the triangles created from you 45 degree cut! You will cut enough to create your 90" of binding. Please let us know if you have additional questions!

  • @tesschristensen8395
    @tesschristensen8395 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Hi, new to sewing. Found this and would love to make as gifts. When you say binding strip, is that the same as bias tape? And is 2.5 inches the width once it's folded? Thanks!

    • @ShabbyFabrics
      @ShabbyFabrics  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Bias tape and binding strips are essentially the same thing. Bias tape comes pre-made, so you're limited on sizes and colors, but you can make your own binding strips (or bias tape) with whatever fabric you like.
      You'll start with 2.5 inches, unfolded, and then fold as directed and sew 1/4" seam allowance to attach it to the front and back. Let me know how else I can help! - Morgan

    I love this but I am still confused about the place before you cut the binding. Your head was in the way when you showed were to measure from/to. The left part of the binding you cut 2 1/5 " toward the right of the pin?? Then on the right part of the binding you cut 2 15" to the pin? Is that correct? Thank you.

    • @ShabbyFabrics
      @ShabbyFabrics  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Donna! After reviewing the video, when Jen is cutting the binding, the first end she measures is cut 2.5" from the pin. The second end she cuts is measured and cut at where the pin rests. Let us know if you have any other questions! ~Leah

  • @puchinita1
    @puchinita1 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Kind of confusing. Did you sew the pockets before you put them on the long piece? Did you use something to make the pockets stick together as it looks like they might be fused together.

    • @ShabbyFabrics
      @ShabbyFabrics  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +puchinita1 the pockets are sewn in place when the binding is added around the entire mitt. You can pin them in place before adding the binding to ensure they stay put. The pockets on the oven mitt that we made were put together using fusible batting and were also stitched together when we added that Shabby Shape. You can see her talk about that process at around 4:30. Hopefully that helps clear up some confusion! Let me know if you need additional clarification :)
