Laid Flat by wind & wave - 2020 Ep 10 - Knocked down when we least expected it

  • Sail with us on a 46 nautical mile passage amongst Australia’s Great Barrier Reef when the weather forecast said mild conditions but the sea decided otherwise. Sailing north from Great Keppel Island, we experience unexpected high wind gusts and big swells. Our bluewater, Whitby 42 ketch is laid flat before we decide to make for our bail out option anchorage to take shelter. No smooth seas under sunny skies in this episode.

    Thanks for sharing your experience. Glad to see that no real damage was done other than a missing SUP!

      As you say, no real damage done. It was a timely reminder not to be complacent. Karen was a bit spooked that, due to her recent shoulder surgery, she would not have been able to handle the boat in those conditions if anything at happened to me. Cheers!

    Wow! Can't believe how calm you guys were! Great video and, as always, great take away tips!

      Calm on the outside maybe. Not so much when it actually happened. There was a degree of shock that our boat could actually get that far over.

    It sounds a bit like our Chicken Rock experience. Weather came out of nowhere and the swell was bonkers. I am glad you came through it OK and you can dine out on the tale for years to come 😉

      Thanks guys. It's not something we want to repeat anytime. Lots of lessons learnt re locker catches and securing below decks that's for sure. We're going looking for your Chicken Rock escapade now. Cheers!

    Good lesson for everyone, always be ready for the worst at sea, it usually happens.

      Yes Ken, that's a very good policy. We were guilty of being a bit complacent because the forecast was good. Big lesson learned. Thanks for watching. We hope you enjoy our videos. Cheers.

    Well done to skipper & crew, you guys were v cool under stress! Enjoyed watching the debrief session also.

      @Dreamtimesail  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Peter. So glad you enjoyed the video. We have learnt that on a boat it's always better to stay as calm as possible no matter what's happening. You can always collapse in a heap latter. Cheers!

    One commenter thought the boat a little tender in terms of stability. Would you agree and does the center fuel tank have much effect on stability when full versus empty? Thanks!

    • @Dreamtimesail
      @Dreamtimesail  ปีที่แล้ว

      We feel the Whitby is far from tender compared to our previous 43 ft modern production boat. We were just caught out by a combination of things that came together to cause the momentary problem. We use the keel tank last so it's seldom down far so we're not sure if an empty tank has much effect or not. Cheers R & K

      Thanks Jeremiah. We're really glad you enjoyed the episode and hope you join us for more. We were fine once we got over the surprise of it all. As we said in the video, Our Dreamtime is much stronger and performs so much better than her crew but we try to do her justice. Cheers!

    Well done guys, the tidal movement in that area would have stood the waves up also, largest tides on east coast. We live in Yeppoon and sail that area often.

    no footage of the knockdown? It all looks remarkably calm, but the boat does seem rather tender.

    • @Dreamtimesail
      @Dreamtimesail  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Robin thanks for the comment. It's never possible to capture the true state of the sea on camera, either still or video. It always looks a lot smoother than it is and became quite sizeable, short, sharp and nasty this day.We didn't have a camera on all the time as unfortunately we hadn't rigged our fixed camera in the cockpit as we were not expecting any dramatic action given the mild forecast. Cheers!
