I have absolutely no musical ability. Last time I did anything musical was singing in my high school choir and I'm 63 years old now. I failed at learning the piano and the guitar in my youth. However, I understand your presentations and can see how right you are in cases of lip-synced or mimed vocals. I find what you do fascinating as someone with more of a science background (I edited scientific publications for many many years) I can see when the data doesn't lie. So I'm not sure how so many professed musical experts think your data is bogus or that you are motivated by envy or an evil desire for capturing views. Keep on telling the truth!
I'm the same age as you and I was an abject musical failure as well. I cannot hear the difference from one key to the other. But I have an academic background in business and yes data trumps what an individual thinks or feels.
One doesn't fail at music. If you suck, you can become a wealthy pop musician like Swift or Sheeran. If you have ability, you become a poor jazz musician with a handful of fans (most of them family).
What a mess we have seen our Fil help to expose over the last month or so. While it is difficult to see all this, it is necessary for the integrity of the music industry.
Fil always seems a nice fellow to me, but it’s not likely that he is THE voice keeping integrity in music. Eventually this gig is going to fade. I hope he keeps making music. I’m sure he never intended to be the guy who reads the pitch monitoring charts on the nightly news.
@@christiansmakingmusic777, While I also hope that Fil keeps making music, I appreciate his efforts to promote transparency in the music industry. His petition needs more exposure. He’s got something else in the works, too.
Played a show with them as a background musician a few years ago. We had to sign NDAs (this was weird in its own right as no other group I’ve played background for has ever done this…), so all I can say is, “I can neither confirm nor deny that almost the entire show may or may not have been playback”. Take that as you will.
I am a singer who has done band and solo performances for 50 years. I've played this and other songs hundreds of times. I can tell you that you settle into what you feel is your best rendition of any particular song and stick with it. So your performances will get pretty similar each time... but never exactly the same! I may have sung a couple dozen other songs before I do this one. I may be fighting a cold. I may be tired because I was working in my yard that day. Whatever... it makes my performances feel fresh. No click track. And yet...I've played and sung (in the studio!) with a click track, and even then...you drift a bit. It is impossible to play it exactly the precise same way every time. I don't care if you are a drummer, guitarist, bassist, keyboardist or singer...you are not a machine.
I agree. Performers should have to disclose if there are prerecorded vocals, instruments, etc. - and state to what degree (ie: predefined levels). I mean, it seems obvious, but it’s such a fraud. It’s false advertising unless this information is disclosed on ads and any promo materials/interviews, at the time of ticket purchase, and announced live before the concert. I’m sure lots of people will still want to see the show for the group experience and nostalgic purposes, but most people wouldn’t want to pay mega bucks if they knew they’re not actually doing live vocals and instruments. Maybe putting laws into effect would change their tune where they either perform every note and lyric live or disclose that they’re acting to backing tracks - the latter might lead them to have to lower ticket prices, but it’s better than totally being out of work (and might actually gain a lot of respect and sales for the honesty/integrity). Speaking of fraud and false advertising, I wonder if you can call a credit card company to say you didn’t get the advertised “product” in reality to get your money back.
@MashaT22 that's a good idea. Because it is fraudulent to say something is "live" but it's not completely live. Frankie Valli comes to mind. I get that people want to see a legend but if that legend is literally a puppet is it worth it?
My mom just used this “70s slang” the other day talking about the fact there is no way to prove anything on the news is true unless you were there yourself.
For those of us who tried Memorex tapes in the 70s, we found it was crap and thereafter avoided it, preferring to stick with TDK and Maxell. They did, however, have clever cases, but that had no effect on the quality of the tape.
Yep. In order for those three live performances to stay that well in sync-obviously, at the VERY least-the keyboardist & drummer are playing to a click track they’re hearing in headphones (or a surreptitiously-worn earbuds). But _really_ it’s sounding more and more like it’s a pre-record.
Anyone remember Millie Vanilli getting tarred and feathered. Maybe they didn’t have the right talent, but these guys do. I’m not paying several $100 to hear recordings.
in some cases 10,000 US dollars a ticket for concerts, can you imagine? I would not be able to afford such a thing, but I certainly don't want to pay to see someone lip-synching etc. my hubby plays with a local band. It is so fun, and they are really very good - even surprised me - so I will go see them and bands like them and put a donation in. Of course, I live in Mississippi - we moved from Philly - and I found that are lots of incredibly talented musicians here who have day jobs and play gigs in little shacks - literally - for fun in the evenings. Maybe it is because with no internet or even phone lines, there really isn't much else to do here.
If you wanted to hear exactly the same performance, you would simply listen to the same recording over and over. What an artist can do with a song from performance to performance is what is so beautiful. I don’t understand why the music industry thinks we want to listen to robots. Love what you are doing to bring awareness.
Has more to do with mainstream music is full of performers with poor musical abilities. Most are unable to come close to what their polished, enhanced studio cuts present.
@@Spo-Dee-O-Dee Les Paul would speed up his recordings in the studio and put it out on albums. (I'm guessing like 5 times as fast.) Very common to manipulate album recordings into things that aren't possible in a live setting.
TH-cam and Don Henley are a perfect fit for each other: unfriendly, mean spirited and greedy. A big corporate stance is to be expected from the likes of TH-cam, but this sort of nastiness and deceit by Don Henley and the Eagles has nothing to do with artistic integrity and as such, should be called out for what it is. Well Done Fil, as always.
Absolutely, with the ironical thing being that it probably takes much much more effort to get the Fakery right then it is to play it straight and authentically. What a Scandal.
Don Henley is doing everything possible to ensure that The Eagles music will be forgotten within the next 30 years. And I wish him the best of luck in that worthy endeavour.
Awesomely put! The root of his behavior was probably to ensure there would be no videos of him lip-synching Or piping in the instruments, but I guess he cut off his nose to spite his face. Despite whatever heir he has. When collateral damage becomes total damage.
@@BillAshley-qb2bw Not exactly sure what the objective is, both for faking it and for being the ultimate TH-cam vigilante, but if I were to guess I'd say it's pure short term greed. He knows he's hated, both on SM and amongst his peers, but that doesn't seem to bother him. Sad part is he is taking great songs like Hotel California and dumping them in the graveyard of forgotten music, because that is where they will end up if no one is exposing their work to newer generations.
Ella sang live without vocal enhancement into her 70’s. So did Ernestine Anderson. These are musicians who sing. Singers are like birds. We’re in it for the s-o-u-n-d
Ernestine shout out! I saw Nancy Wilson s last NYC show in 2011. She said she had one more show and was stopping. I loved Nancy Wilson for many reasons; her stopping while still ""on her game" was admirable.
Well done Fil, I'm glad you call this out. I was going to see them at the Sphere but it's very expensive. Now I see I can just buy a DVD instead! I always liked live music because it sounds different and they interact with the audience. But having an artist miming defeats the purpose.
Long time viewer. And long time fan of you calling these guys out. I always make sure to pass this information along to people who may not know. Also -- my opinion? It's a backing track. If they'll do it with the vocals, why wouldn't they do it with the instrumentals? Thank you, Fil.
And, if the Eagles are doing it, what other classic rock artist is doing it? Takes the fun right out of attending a concert when you have to be thinking - are these live vocals and instruments being played or miming to backing tracks.
Aerosmith and Huey Lewis and the News have both retired because they can no longer perform to what they believe is necessary for the audience. Good for their honesty. I wonder if this would be going on where Glen Fry still alive.
I downloaded that app, and tried to sing the exact same thing twice. Turned out completely different. Maybe I’m just bad at singing. So I snapped my fingers twice. This _also_ turned out as two completely differently shaped lines. You can’t even replicate a simple *snap* perfectly. Think about that.
Use a musical instrument like piano or guitar. Take the piano and hit the middle C while recording. Repeat that and remember to use the same pressure as the first. Then compare. Or pluck the high open E string on a guitar etc. Snapping the fingers is way to hard to repeat reliably IMHO.
Hi Fil, FIghting the good fight for honesty in the music world! You have done a great job on yet another Eagles video! You are doing great work, Fil! Thanks for bringing this to us! Yes, they have literally changed their tune! However, have they forgotten how to play their instruments and now have to rely on click tracks and backing tracks ??? Good one , Fil! 💜
That's what I liked about the concerts in the 70's. Sometimes the band had a bad night, but sometimes there were amazing performances and it was raw and in your face. That's what live is all about.
"what live is all about" "... about 40 minutes past start time" in the case of waiting for ELO to finally take the stage. Minus the "Spaceship" prop, which gets advertised all along ahead of the concert and then you show up (Providence RI convention center) and a very worn-out sign at the entrance says it won't be there. At least the playing was good. Kaminski wore out a couple of violin bows, so that was probably for real.
I don't get it. If they don't feel like their abilities are up to scratch anymore and they've made all the money in the world, won the Grammys, played all the cool places AND is edging towards nursing home age. Why cheat? Why don't they just call it a day and go home and spend time with the grand kids?

Good for you!! So happy this video happened. I was at a Pat Benatar show in August in Phx and our air quality sucks! During Hell Is For Children, she stopped and said “I can’t do this with the desert air” It was a bit of a bummer, but better than being deceived. She ended up singing other stuff! Even if you’re not a musician, it’s understandable that the voice goes just like every other organ or part of the body!! Just do your best or stop touring. No fake crap!!
I suspect they just swapped out one pre-recorded vocal for another prerecorded vocal. When they last played it live legitimately, it was tuned down a whole step. I doubt Henley would go back up to the original key years later after singing it lower for years.
@@ToddSauve he could bring down an out-of-reach note by going down a third. No shame in that. A 70 year old Ella sang as well if not better than her 20 year old self.
Yes, I wondered the same thing about Don Henley singing it back in the original key 9 years after being down a tone. I wondered if they have recorded two or 3 pre-recorded vocals that they are rotating now in these Las Vegas performances, to try to keep people from catching on. And why would they not have a live piano? You can't find a piano player in Las Vegas??
The Eagles..."quick!..take down the incriminating video evidence which proves our cheating!"....this is indeed the action of TRUE Desperados!....concert ticket purchasers should SUE them.
Fil you are the man!!! (Yes, I'm old but you understand I hope). Congrats for pointing this out to begin with and for sticking to the truth. Btw, my brother in law just went to a Three Dog Night concert and said it wasn't good. So everyone needs to accept the fact that you could be disappointed. I still believe honesty is still the best policy.
To the musicians who think we don't want to hear your natural voice any longer: You are wrong. I was very fortunate to hear Gordon Lightfoot shortly before he died. His voice did not have the strength he once had when he was younger, but his heart and spirit still came through. I truly appreciated his performance. Indeed, it was an honor and a privilege to be allowed to hear this incredibly talented man. At the evening of his life, he generously gave his time and talent to us once more. we could all learn from him.
As a retired musician that lives for listening these days, Any fan of any given artist or group has probably listened too their albums so many times that any deviation in a live set stands out. That's a good thing. If fans wanted to hear a perfect reply of a studio album, why would we pay so much to hear it in a crowd? Atmosphere? I say of course that's a major part of any gig, but we want it all! A recent costello gig was criticised in the press as he was doing "real live" stripped back versions without a full band which in lnuded some old songs. He sang live and they seemed to want him to jump around, full group, like he did 48 years ago! 😂 voices mature, people age. The late Johnny Cash's voice on "Hurt" a cover he sang within the last 12 months of his life which was great and emotional but so much deeper voice than his early songs. Guess my waffle is trying to say. "Keep it Real, Keep it live". You can love the original songs but if you don't like a new style or a voice change it's OK too. Please make sure artists don't feel pressure to be something they are not anymore. Love Live❤
Give 'em a break! In their live shows they're doing EVERYTHING live except their singing and their playing! What more do you want for just $500 a ticket? Let me guess. Next you're going to expect it to actually be THEM in person on the stage!
I heard the Eagles live a number of years ago…. Okay, we all hung out in a packed arena and listened to a recording. The “concert” was my Father’s Day gift. And Henley, my son wants his money back.
The Eagles got to the end of the video and want to know if they got away with using a backing track. The thing that annoys me is we have tribute bands who do what the original artists can't or won't do anymore which is sing and play live. We expect the original artists to have higher standards than that.
This is so wild that this has become a commonplace thing in the music industry. The entire reason I am so passionate about music is BECAUSE of the uphill battle to be good live. Everything else is just studio work and money.
I love live performances whether it's a R&R band or Broadway musical because they are always different than a previous performance or recording. I have been to live performances of plays/musicals two nights in a row and am rewarded with a subtlely different performance. Live theater is just the best for all of these reasons. "Getting the exact same performance night after night, year after year, is impossible." And thank goodness for that!
For anyone without the patience, I think this is what Fil is saying: You might think, in his other videos, that he's just saying, "See how similar they sound? It's the same vocal." That's not the case, however, and this is an excellent demonstration of how even when overlaid and the performances sound nearly identical, the data will still show massive differences if they are different performances, because when you're zooming into this micro-level, there will always be differences. It's not possible, nor is it even _desirable,_ to control your voice to the 100th of a second. The conclusion? He's not lying and he's not basing his results on impression. He's looking at the data, which as we can see, doesn't care about if something "sounds similar" or not.
Now I would consider going to see the Eagles live. We all love the Eagles. Do it "Live" and the audience is so much bigger. Your music and performances are unforgettable. Once we get to a point where the machine is taking over, then game over. We lose the video game we are all living in and it is over rover. We do win the game we are in. The hologram and Matrix is breaking. Omega is almost faded out completely. Birthing pains. A new beginning. Great video Wings.
I thought that the "Hell freezes over" concert sounded really good. Now I'm questioning whether they were actually singing it live. This is sort of like when Toto pulled the curtain back and exposed the great wizzard.
Fil, you cracked the code! BUSTED! You have proved the obvious. Thank you for taking the time out to prove without a doubt everything is bullshit! I just hope you don't get negative recourse from your excellent work and showing what a lot of professional performers are lying to us when we pay top price to see them perform and here it's a lip sync performance from God knows when it was prerecorded from who knows when. I totally appreciate your efforts, time, and skills to bring this to the surface and let the general public how they are being fooled and taken advantaged of when purchasing tickets to these shows but NOT receiving what they honestly paid for. I cannot thank you enough for all of your efforts showing this clear record without and error. I will ask any performer who you have called out to prove you WRONG!! I guaranty not ONE will call you out.
Some artist pre-record their Live vocals prior to that show or have several recorded versions & switch them up. Every sound engineer here in the U.S. that has run sound for top artists has to sign a confidentiality agreement about the backing tracks, Lip Syncing etc...
I wouldn’t feel comfortable attending an Eagles concert until an entire concert was assessed. This song is a simple one without the range of other hits.
I remember going to a Dan Fogelberg concert a million years ago and he was playing solo. I was disappointed until he started playing the piano or guitar and singing all alone. It was one of the best concerts I have ever attended. He was unbelievable and told the sound engineers to adjust the volume on the fly. I knew all of his songs and could play all of the guitar parts so it was fantastic to hear the changes he made playing solo. I went to an Eagles concert decades ago and I could easily hear the differences between the live sound and the records that I had listened to a thousand times. I don't know how what they are doing now is legal, considering what they charge for front-row tickets. I love what you are doing Fil. I appreciate the Scientific Method and objective data since I am both a scientist and musician/singer.
They got caught cheating and their reaction was: "Let's use a different vocal recording, leave out the pitch correction, make a minor tweak to the instrumental recording and increase the pressure on unauthorized uploads. That will be enough to prevent anyone from noticing we are cheating." Come one Eagles, that's plain stupid. I've seen some bands playing live, many of them twice or more often. Some of them I've seen two nights in a row. None of them managed to play the same song identically twice. Some of them intentionally added variations instead of trying to copy themselves. There is nothing wrong about not sounding the same every night. That's the magic of live music! Variations add even more quality to it. Playing live is life!
FWIW, as part of Don Henley's testimony to Congress, he talked about how he *hires* people to monitor social networking and shutdown any unauthorized copies of his songs. I forget how many he hires. And I do think it's important to show the data when that demonstrates that the performances are *different,* in addition to the ones where the audio is exactly the same. I'll give an extra 👍 thumbs up for doing this.
My wife and I attended the March 2024 concert, and I was so disappointed to learn that it wasn't a live performance that we paid to see. 😢 From this point forward, I'll just insert my 1994 Hell Freezes Over DVD and watch/hear an Eagle's live performance in the comfort of our home.
Thank you Fil. You have presented the desire of people paying for tickets to hear a live vocal. Thank you for your efforts, we are so proud of the mission of your channel. If the music industry wants musical instruments pre-recorded and tracked for reuse throughout the band’s live tour, I guess the band members must be in agreement to be simply entertainers not musicians. It is an easier experience to play a few bars at the beginning or end of a song and simply play to “enhance” the track sound. It kinda reminds me of the classic Cyrano de Bergerac - the handsome face visible but the true voice(musical sound) is behind a bush (an instrumental track bush).
Also saw the Eagles in Vegas. They had security patrolling the floor looking for people taking videos. Is this why they were so adamant about using your cell phone camera?

Fil always seems a nice fellow to me, but it’s not likely that he is THE voice keeping integrity in music. Eventually this gig is going to fade. I hope he keeps making music. I’m sure he never intended to be the guy who reads the pitch monitoring charts on the nightly news.

Played a show with them as a background musician a few years ago. We had to sign NDAs (this was weird in its own right as no other group I’ve played background for has ever done this…), so all I can say is, “I can neither confirm nor deny that almost the entire show may or may not have been playback”. Take that as you will.
Did you "play" in Ken Tamplin's band also?
What instrument did u play
I played a show with them too, and i wasn’t even there
Hear you loud and clear! 😉
Eagles Inc. they been running like a corporation a long time.
Concerts done like this should be 100% FREE of charge. Selling tickets to stuff like this should be criminal.
Who'd bother to go even if it was free?!
@MashaT22 that's a good idea. Because it is fraudulent to say something is "live" but it's not completely live. Frankie Valli comes to mind. I get that people want to see a legend but if that legend is literally a puppet is it worth it?
@@Tim091 I don’t know. That’s a good question.

My mom just used this “70s slang” the other day talking about the fact there is no way to prove anything on the news is true unless you were there yourself.
😅💯💥
Using 1970’s slang. This is jive!
For those of us who tried Memorex tapes in the 70s, we found it was crap and thereafter avoided it, preferring to stick with TDK and Maxell. They did, however, have clever cases, but that had no effect on the quality of the tape.

You did very well, Fil, to maintain a straight face at 12:46 when you said, "I would like to think that this isn't all a backing track ... but ..."

Those guys have paid back their embarrassment. They are resting in peace.

in some cases 10,000 US dollars a ticket for concerts, can you imagine? I would not be able to afford such a thing, but I certainly don't want to pay to see someone lip-synching etc. my hubby plays with a local band. It is so fun, and they are really very good - even surprised me - so I will go see them and bands like them and put a donation in. Of course, I live in Mississippi - we moved from Philly - and I found that are lots of incredibly talented musicians here who have day jobs and play gigs in little shacks - literally - for fun in the evenings. Maybe it is because with no internet or even phone lines, there really isn't much else to do here.
Are there awards for great miming?🤣
Ashlee Simpson had her singing career destroyed by lip synching on tv. People were very mad. Now days seems most don’t care.

You are creating a new understanding of live music and what it means to be a consumer of it.
Totally agree.
If you wanted to hear exactly the same performance, you would simply listen to the same recording over and over. What an artist can do with a song from performance to performance is what is so beautiful. I don’t understand why the music industry thinks we want to listen to robots.
Strongly disagree. No one, not even TH-cam, could match Don Henley as the ultimate villain.
Just say it for God's sake... the Eagles believe they are entitled to our $$ with minimal effort. What a joke.

The idea that they've got a monster like Vince Gill on guitar and he might just be miming along with a track makes me a little sick.
And, if the Eagles are doing it, what other classic rock artist is doing it? Takes the fun right out of attending a concert when you have to be thinking - are these live vocals and instruments being played or miming to backing tracks.

I downloaded that app, and tried to sing the exact same thing twice. Turned out completely different. Maybe I’m just bad at singing. So I snapped my fingers twice. Use a musical instrument like piano or guitar. Take the piano and hit the middle C while recording. Repeat that and remember to use the same pressure as the first. Then compare. Or pluck the high open E string on a guitar etc. Snapping the fingers is way to hard to repeat reliably IMHO.

I suspect they just swapped out one pre-recorded vocal for another prerecorded vocal. When they last played it live legitimately, it was tuned down a whole step. I doubt Henley would go back up to the original key years later after singing it lower for years.
Don Henley probably _can't_ sing it in the original key now that he's in his 70s.
@@ToddSauve he could bring down an out-of-reach note by going down a third. No shame in that. A 70 year old Ella sang as well if not better than her 20 year old self.

Ok, so their whole performance is one giant backing track. Unreal 😂
I saw him too. It was really authentic and beautiful.
I love Gord and saw him many times, and even when his voice was particularly weak and he was short of breath, I loved the show.
Please make sure artists don't feel pressure to be something they are not anymore. Love Live❤
Johnny Cash's version of Hurt never fails to make me cry 😢

I heard the Eagles live a number of years ago…. Okay, we all hung out in a packed arena and listened to a recording. The “concert” was my Father’s Day gift. And Henley, my son wants his money back.
The Eagles got to the end of the video and want to know if they got away with using a backing track. The thing that annoys me is we have tribute bands who do what the original artists can't or won't do anymore which is sing and play live. We expect the original artists to have higher standards than that.
And, ironically, many of those tribute bands take a beating at the hands of the fans who mockingly call them "just tribute bands".

Definitely different vocals. Thanks Fil.
Good stuff man. Great work as always Fil.
Walking out after the concert:
Jack: "Vocals were great."
Jill: "And the backup recordings were well played too."
For anyone without the patience, I think this is what Fil is saying:
You might think, in his other videos, that he's just saying, "See how similar they sound? It's the same vocal."
That's not the case, however, and this is an excellent demonstration of how even when overlaid and the performances sound nearly identical, the data will still show massive differences if they are different performances, because when you're zooming into this micro-level, there will always be differences. It's not possible, nor is it even _desirable,_ to control your voice to the 100th of a second.
The conclusion? He's not lying and he's not basing his results on impression. He's looking at the data, which as we can see, doesn't care about if something "sounds similar" or not.
They’re probably even using Randy Meisner’s bass recordings too… 🙄
And Don Felder's guitar tracks.
So Don got the message. No lawsuits have come your way so great work Fil!
They got caught cheating and their reaction was: "Let's use a different vocal recording, leave out the pitch correction, make a minor tweak to the instrumental recording and increase the pressure on unauthorized uploads. That will be enough to prevent anyone from noticing we are cheating."
Come one Eagles, that's plain stupid.
Thanks Fil. I so appreciate your commitment to objective data and integrity.
FWIW, as part of Don Henley's testimony to Congress, he talked about how he *hires* people to monitor social networking and shutdown any unauthorized copies of his songs. I forget how many he hires.
Audience is so overwhelmed by the visuals that they don't seem to care about the actual music.
