      You're overthinking it. People go to Mariah's shows for the full experience, not just to dissect every note. Of course, live vocals are ideal, and Mariah has proven she can deliver-just look at her MTV Unplugged set. But her concerts aren’t stripped-down jam sessions, they’re full-scale productions designed to immerse the audience. Part of selling that experience might mean she doesn’t sing every song live, and that’s fine. It’s about the overall impact, not just the technicalities.

    I recall seeing Rush for their last couple of tours (I had seen them many times over the years). Geddy couldn't quite hit the notes he used to hit, but he adjusted and still sounded mostly great. Age is a real issue, but facing it with grace as a performer speaks volumes (no pun intended).

    • @mhoppy6639
      @mhoppy6639 หลายเดือนก่อน +8

      Very well said. Just adjust your performance accordingly.
      You can always tell when people are f@cking about with things because older artists (as you say) seem to exist in exactly same register that they did decades ago.
      Look at how Elton John’s voice has changed when you compare his 70s versions of songs like “someone saved my life tonight” to the contemporary takes.
      (I sincerely hope he isn’t doing it as I’m using him as an example!!)
      McCartneys voice has also changed and frankly deteriorated but we can cut him slack as he’s 80 odd!
      When I saw Roger Waters in Birmingham last year which was just mesmerising, he got help from other band members with lots of the higher melody notes that he used to hit easily in the 70s/80s
      He’s also changed keys for certain songs - in the black and white lockdown version of the Gunners Dream he’s taken the song down considerably and it’s superb. I can’t detect pitch correction because his voice is flawed anyway.
      I think artists like Carey are wat too proud to admit their voice has changed but it’s daft.
      PS that song in the AMA recording is cr@p anyway - awful melody - completely forgettable.
      Great vid Fil!

    Thank you, Fil. I could never put my finger on why I dislike a lot of modern music and I think one big reason is that it is so artificial. • @elizabethmiller7291
      @elizabethmiller7291 หลายเดือนก่อน +10

      One of the reasons why music is trending towards the artificial is the notion that great singers "missed a note". Great singers do not sing on the note lines of a pitch monitoring graph more than once or twice or three times at the most in any one song and then, as Fil so eloquently described it, singing on those lines a few times in a song is only the "collateral damage" of having a great voice! The emotion of a song and of a great singer's voice lives between those note lines, not on them, in other words.

Even back in the late 50's, Sinatra would do multiple takes, and the producers would occasionally cobble together the master from multiple takes. And that's when they had to actually splice tape. The Beatles did it a few times, too. But with digital recording in the 1980's and beyond, creating a master from multiple takes is easy.

    It's so sad that we won't allow our beloved artists to age gracefully. We've tried to attach them to a time when their voice sounded a certain way, no new skills or maturity permitted; no ushering in of the next musical generation, like how Tony Bennett became the ultimate showman as he aged while working with Winehouse, GaGa etc, like Joni Mitchell working with Brandi Carlile and other friends, etc. Pavarotti's honest lament was that he was still acquiring skills, even as his voice was in its decline. Thanks Fil, for what you do to bring honesty to this time of Narratives and Lies.

To maintain the same level of performance they would need to sing either like mezzo or alto(like Adele) or sing with a heady voice, like Patti Labelle and Aretha did, but these singers dont/didnt want neither, they want to pretend they have the same voice through lip sync.

      When I watch Mariah sing live (and not synced) nobody is as disappointed with her vocal, as she is. You can tell that she knows exactly what she can and can't do, and is disappointed, you can see it in her eyes. I think more confidence, and being in a little better physical shape would do wonders for her voice. At the end of the day, she knows more about the female voice than even the mighty Wings of Pegasus does, she's just trying to give the fans a good show and unfortunately has decided that means lip syncing a lot of it. We're in a new territory where we haven't had these great singers who are still performing late in life, and people expect them to hit their notes. I wish people like Mariah would normalize reworking the songs so that we can get it a little lower and she can give us a new version of it instead of attempting the same key.

    So she recorded the original songs but also recorded tons and tons of takes to use for these back/lip tracks? It sounds like Mariah Carey has just been constantly singing-exactly what I would expect.

  • @AmateurRepairTime

    I think what she's doing is she can still sing a lot of that, in studio after a few takes in good conditions, so some of those backing tracks are modern. That's why there's so many different 'takes', she's actually able to pull some of that off. In my opinion, she's still a fantastic singer even though live she can't do the acrobatics she used to do. This is a thing we're going to have with any amazing female singer when they get a little older, nobody can pull that off forever. Martina McBride is another example, an amazing singer who aged on us and now is trying to figure out how to continue performing when your body, no matter how much you take care of yourself, just isn't going to allow you to sing like that forever. I cut Mariah a lot of slack.

    A few months ago I was watching a recent live performance by John Mellencamp. I said to my wife, 'It's sad to see that his voice has gotten this bad." I went back the other day and found the video. It was like a breath of fresh air because he's out there enjoying singing his songs as much as he did when he first wrote them. It's not really hard to appreciate these performances even though voice quality isn't the same. All you need to do is remember how bad the music industry has gotten.

    Mariah is the single most intricate lip syncer in history. She has one performance where she takes a singular word with two syllables and lips the first syllable while singing the second syllable live. She has another song where she switches from live to lip back to live then to lip etc like 12 times within a song. She has more re recordings to lip to then just 1, and likes to keep it fresh or harder to peg by being so inconsistently crazy with her lipping.

    I think this is the first time i heard the difference
    Im an old man but used to run front of house sound for a rock cover band for 7 years.
    My ear used to be so good i could cancel out the entire song and listen to a cymbal.
    I was also a bass player and me and guitar player got a 16 track Tascam with 1" tape and the newest drum machine made at the time.
    We recorded well over 50 songs and sent them everywhere but he got tied up with a yankee chick and i happily got married and moved back home.
    Im still married . He still plays cover bands doing the same songs we did in 1982.
    His only son is in NYC and we are on the texas coast.
    Oh he had written one song that was cecentvand i wrote 2. Idk where the recordings are.

    So what I get from most of your videos that most are lip syncing or not live..pre-recorded... And I totally get this because if you look at the age of the people that are singing most of their songs from awhile ago there voices should be way different because of the changing of our voice as we get older. I'm a singer and I do not sound like I used to And my voice sounds now totally different. I can't hit the notes like I used to. I think one great singer Tony Bennett was pretty great with his voice over the years...❤ Thank you for all your analysis on these songs.You're just telling the truth and people are asking you for it.I think you're grand...❤🎼🎵🎶and such a cuite😊

      Listening to an interview with my favourite singer they said that they are having to work harder to keep that upper register going while their lower register is deepening, that singer is now in their early 40s. listening to them live you can hear the difference in their voice from when they were in their 20s.
      Another singer I have admired since I was a teenager (I'm 68) but only got to hear her live in the early 2000's her voice had matured but still could hit the highs that she did way back in the late 60's she is now 75, still touring and singing folk and rock music. Sometimes meeting your youth's heroes is wonderful experience. Sonja Kristina, of Curved Air, wonderful lady that first gave me goosebumps listening to her sing Back Street Luv, Frank Mills and Cold as a Rose in Snow.

      Naw! Not just Tony whom I love, but most of the great singers from back then, Sarah Vaughn, Ella, Nancy Wilson, Peggy Lee, Johnny Mathis, the Golden Fog, Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis, Jr. They were pop and jazz singers who took their art as seriously as an opera singer who has to sing live over a 70 piece orchestra. Live opera proves that it is possible to sing without all that junk. My voice teacher taught both future opera and Broadway singers. Technique training is what is needed or just a good natural voice.
