Always interesting to renovate and remodel older homes. Took out the tile in a shower in a 1950's era home. The ceramic soap tray that was set in the wall had news paper packed behind it. Was able to see when it was printed and had some cartoons making fun of the USSR leadership as well as advertisements for the area. One thing I have started doing for any toilet or vanity replacement I do is automatically replace shutoffs and supply lines. Too often I have had one or both fail on me in trying to save the customer a buck. Piece of mind knowing those two items are new and its in good shape.
I don't know if I missed it, but what did you put down over the sheet vinyl floor? I assume you don't really have to worry about water resistance with the vinyl staying down.
Work on my grandfather's old house continues, and this is great inspiration. The next major interior job is a bathroom remodel. It's a house from 1962, 3 bed 1 bath. The bathroom is small so I want to expand it a bit by taking out the oversized closet that's in there. The bathroom has some old octagonal tile I'd like to save and reuse, buttttt we got sub floor issues from years of a leaky bathtub my grandad never did anything about, so I gotta chunk it all up and replace the flooring. I'm not looking forward to it lol,
its nice to watch and most of us think they can do it. the thing is he's getting paid for his years of exp not for how easy he makes it look. Only his tools altogather cost more than your car :) but it's so nice to watch him work , rly.
We just did our master bath. Mostly. New, larger shower. Love it. New captains chair, new floor, new granite counters on the two-sink vanity, as well as around the garden tub, sinks were replaced with undermounts. Replaced big mirror with vanity style framed mirrors, and gone are the dressing-room banks of globe bulbs. Floors were redone in vinyl plank.
As a newbie DIY guy, I would have assumed that the old linoleum would have to be torn out. Even if it and the subfloor are still in good shape. Good to see that it can stay in place and help get the new tile to the correct height. Looking forward to the rest of the videos for the project.
Couple of things here. The Linoleum is probably bonded directly to the subfloor with an adhesive and peeling the linoleum off and cleaning the adhesive can be a nightmare. Also leaving the linoleum on actually acts as a type of slip sheet (crack isolation membrane). So as long as its installed properly it's typically beneficial to leave it.
I may catch flack for this but even at 33 I very much so recommend wearing knee pads anytime you are on the floor. doing this stuff plus liking to go on a run once in a while vs elliptical/bike my knees are starting to feel tired
Finally saw your live stream! I always miss them, I just happened to be on TH-cam and your LIVE popped up on my feed, I enjoyed it for over an hour and will make a better effort to not miss the next one! Great stuff and I knew you were my kinda people! 👌🚲🐷🔫💰
Agree 100%... if you are handy, you can save a ton of $ doing it yourself. Contractors will tell you everything needs to be replaced to try and up-sell the job. Total cost for my job... perhaps $800. The new tile was the most expensive part. I'm in the middle of revamping my 1/2 bath as part of a family room re-do. New T&G ceiling, new tile floor and all new trim & paint. I had to break up and remove the old tile (crappy grout job). The toilet, sink and cabinet were in great shape, cleaned up well and will be re-used. I just spent perhaps 3 hours total repainting the cabinet to make it like new. Tip... as long as the toilet is yanked, pull everything out of it inside, clean and rebuild it from scratch with all new plumbing parts. It will be just like a new one. Replace your water shutoffs as well, as long as everything is easily accessed (ball valves of course).
Yeah I did everything but the bathtub and surround for about $1000... I had to completely reassemble the vanity I bought, it looked like a drunk 4th grader with a staple gun had built it.
16:15 man I’d watch an hour long of your videos, heck, even 2 hrs at one go! Way better content than what’s on actual tv, seriously 👍🏻 Cheers and hope make it to the stream, as always a “hoot”!😂 ✌🏻
What about replacing the tub/shower? Aren't you supposed to do a complete remod so all of the plumbing ages at the same time? (I'm just interested in which wall you would be ripping out to get it out and a new one in. And, what window or exterior wall you would have to open up).
Your next job. movie director. what is that carpet protection film called? first thing I do if working on a bathroom Is asked to see where the main water shut off is in case water line break.
So as this is a great video and yes you can save money, but lets not forget you need to pull permits for the work your doing, if you are caught doing work without per.its you can face some hefty fines, and if you flood or burn your house down because you didnt do something correctly without a permit, your homeowners insurance will not cover it
Hey thanks for the great videos and information. I have 2 questions. 1. I didn't see you cover the toilet hole. Is there not a concern for sewer gas on upper floors? 2. Why don't you wear gloves when doing this type of work?
I've been in this business for 20 years and i do very well. My family wants for absolutely nothing and I'm not charging anywhere near what you are. I'm not knocking you by any means. I'm just wondering if I've been doing this all wrong my whole life. How are you landing jobs like this with a $6500 price tag? What area do you service?
I service rich white liberals in a sanctuary city. If you are making less than $280,000 a year you would be considered low income here. This was a budget facelift type of job. You should watch my videos about business and money that are on my other channel. Its called The Handyman Business.
@ The handyman in the beginning of the video I noticed you taking nuts off with pliers. I suggest getting ratcheting wrenches from Lowes. They come in handy. Sometimes they're on special for $49.99 for 20 pieces that come with both metric and SAE sizes. Anyway hope that helps.
Hello, Are those marble ? From where ?? They look like marble… (highly not recommended due to their maintenance) but damn they are beautiful! Hoping their not marble though… I want the same ones
What do you do if the floor around the toilet needs repair/replaced? How do you make up the difference between the old floor with linoleum and the patch without?
Haha straight as a broken dick. I’m adding that to my list of sayings. Last one I added was a Dirt bike that runs faster than a smashed cat haha. Love the video man. Thanks.
I can hear people saying it now “YoU sHoULd Be WeArInG gLoVeS wHeN tAkInG tHe ToILeT oUt” … just don’t tell them that you went out an ate a sandwich right afterwards. Extra flavor
This is the business management app I use to run my business go.getjobber.com/thehandymanbusiness Let me know how you like it.

The fact that the newspaper was still intact and and not absorbed any moisture means that the original tiler know how to waterproof!
Bathroom remodel…one of the BEST ways to add value to your house 👏🏼👏🏼
"and this is where I shit"
All the whistling killed me. Lol
This series is awesome! Your explanation of the why you do the things you do and the order of operations is a winner!!

As a retired lighting /cameraman, good to see your approach to soft lighting. Most TH-camrs suck at getting light on whatever their shooting. 👍

I just had to tear out an old subfloor and it came out in splinters... Took a whole day. There were about 500 nails sunk into it.
You are literally standing in my bathroom. It’s almost identical to this lol. Thanks for the great content!!
14:30 Bathrooms are as straight as a broken what? 😂 I’ve never heard that one before but I’m taking it with me to work! Lol
Tune in tonight to the livestream

I always seem to run into problems. My house in 1959 though. I admire you for wearing the Rolex while doing real work. I have one and I baby it.

Nice inspiring video. Always look easy and motivate me when I watch your video🤣. Hopefully I am brave enough to do such a big project like you one day

You can leave it to go faster, but I remove it in my house and for anyone else who might be concerned about mold under the flooring.
Honestly if the floor feels solid I'd leave it. It felt soft and spongy I'd definitely rip it all up.
youre really not even doing much of a gut without pulling the floor up to see the condition of the subfloor, but good luck half assing everything
And you always thinset your cement board to the subfloor, never just screws
I may catch flack for this but even at 33 I very much so recommend wearing knee pads anytime you are on the floor. doing this stuff plus liking to go on a run once in a while vs elliptical/bike my knees are starting to feel tired
That's why I have a small bucket for the sink drain!
Do you have a video showing the 1/4 turn ball valve replacement of the old style water valve?

Handy getting real with the language! That’s how it is in the Handyworld,

The "yummay" when you took the sink out 😂😂 Great video!
super clean bathroom no spider webs under the sink
Have fun at the livestream! I’ve gotta go to bed
The thumbnail looks like a “local handyman CAUGHT” news story
Your next job. movie director.
what is that carpet protection film called?
first thing I do if working on a bathroom Is asked to see where the main water shut off is in case water line break.
Clean shaven. Handyman for president
Perfect work with a perfect attitude 👌
I’m remodeling a master bath twice the size of yours. Contractor is doing work $9000 all in. $6500 is way too much hot a DIY
best handyman in the entire world 😁👍
Why did you leave the vinyl under the new floor? Some guy in the future is gonna make a video of him removing it and complaining lol
The one toilet bolt looked like the tub side so probably water splashed from getting in and out of the tub, just an observation,GOD BLESS
So as this is a great video and yes you can save money, but lets not forget you need to pull permits for the work your doing, if you are caught doing work without per.its you can face some hefty fines, and if you flood or burn your house down because you didnt do something correctly without a permit, your homeowners insurance will not cover it
😂😂😂
What is it you’re doing starting at 11:14? Is that a new sub flooring? New floor?
Great tip for laying out the tile, I do the same.. do you use any glue under your backer when you install over old floor?
he should thinset under the CPU backerboard
Awesome to see this series thanks!
My husband put a wrench right through the toilet once when removing those rusty floor bolts! Plan B ....new toilet.
What a dream job! Looking forward to the live stream!!
Love your content man. Can’t wait for the next video 👍

Will you remove the tub and shower tile? Other videos gloss this over. I'm sure its not as easy as it looks.

Do you always prefer backer board to ditra underlayment? Is it solely the cost aspect?
I would only use ditra after I have at least ( 1 1/8" ) underlayment over your joists
Hello, Are those marble ? From where ?? They look like marble… (highly not recommended due to their maintenance) but damn they are beautiful!
Hoping their not marble though… I want the same ones
Always remove old linoleum!!! If it leaks and water gets Under the floor will need removed down to the subfloor.
That's an interesting tile. Does a tile like that make it easier or harder to install?
Hi Handyman - every worry about banging up that watch?
This is my work watch. I have a Hulk for nice occasions
Why do people insist on keeping the old toilet when they remodel? $200 for a new one out of a $6500 budget isn't going to break the bank.
I mean... it is when this guy is charging $6500 for new tile, vanity and paint but leaving the tub lololol.
It clearly holds sentimental value.
Are you redoing the bathtub and shower as well?
What do you do if the floor around the toilet needs repair/replaced? How do you make up the difference between the old floor with linoleum and the patch without?
Cut it all out and replace it. Build it up with what is necessary to get the right height.
Fun video, thanks, I leaned a lot!
That bathroom looks like mine, exactly!
Looking forward to the Live Stream.
Haha straight as a broken dick. I’m adding that to my list of sayings. Last one I added was a Dirt bike that runs faster than a smashed cat haha. Love the video man. Thanks.
5x5=10 in Handyman math
Need a shirt with that on it!
Who’s the new guy
I would go with a Lowe's project source chair height toilet, $100, works great, can't beat It
What did you use under the floor tile?
The only thing different between the way you and I do things is that I use better tools, Milwaukeeeeeee!!!!!😂😂
Looking forward to the livestream
Just curious why you didn't remove the old floor?
Great video. Would a homeowner have to get permits to do this, even if they're DIYing it?
No. Even if yes, NO
@@josemv25 lol
No waterproofing nice work
Get you a helper to bring out all the debri & get you some knee pads!!
hearing his whistle fast forwarded makes it sound like R2-d2
Watch the Rolex when you're doing demo!!
Lol toilet last to pull!! I felt your pain there
Can you please provide a list of songs that you are whistling so that I can Enjoy a good whistle along with you.
have any of your clients ever asked to buy your shirts or hats?
6500!??!! lol
i did mine for a grand total of 800.
You didn’t check for floor level?
you do great work and your videos are very informative
I guess you don't mind the poisonous sewer gas coming up through the open toilet hole! Lol
How many days did it tale you?
what is being used for the subfloor?
Put some mustard on that!
Your whistling sped up in Timelapse 👌🏻 😂
Anyone know why he didn't just tile over the linoleum? Is that a bad thing to do? Glue/Grout won't stick well?
Ceramic tile grout would not stick to linoleum.
@@ansleyvalentine2251 I had no idea. Thanks!
Thanks for the video =)
I have a problem You are awesome. I'm not. Love, Dennis.
First!! exciting !
On this $6500 you supply all the materials.??
U need to put on some gloves man my friend died accidentally cutting his hand on a wax ring just saying toilets are dirty
$6500 is NOT do it yourself.....I was quoted $5000 from professionals!😖😖
whatcha wearing there handyman? a Rolex Submariner?
Yes
@@TheHandyman1lol i found one hidden in a wall doing demo once. Gave it to the homeowner though...
love the 90s lol caulk around the sh iter not cool ....hope i can try this one day !!!!!

Just doing your own demo saves many many $$$$$$. Then let the contractor begin.
Sounds good
Good info……thanks much
$6500!!! Where do you live? Seems like a ton of money.
Especially without doing the shower area
How did you quote the client $6500?
Looks good but you should have did something with the shower. For 6500$ even if you put a cheap surround in.
Right side closet bolt rusty due to shower mist or moisture on that side.
