    This information is exactly what I was looking for. Turns a complex appearing problem into something so much simpler for me the unhandy homeowner. Thanks.

    About the 'access hole', we had two of those and thought it was for a fire pit or flower pot lol. I asked few experienced people and even they didn't know. Thank you. The way you talk and your explanation is very easy and calming.

    Right away you pointed out what I was going to suggest - screws are superior to face nailing in every instance.
    I've never worked with an exotic wood clip, like the Ipe clip, but I'm certainly intrigued by it.

    I have a composite deck and stairs. A few boards from the side of the stairs came out. I see there are tiny nails sticking out of them. Do you have any suggestions on how to re-fasten them? I don’t have a handyman so I was going to try it on my own.

    • @gregvancom
      @gregvancom  ปีที่แล้ว

      Maybe re-fasten with deck screws.

    Very helpful. Thank you! How do I actually cut the plank (or board) right at the support though?

    • @gregvancom
      @gregvancom  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Usually with a circular saw, but explain why that won't work if this doesn't help.

      @yukuhana 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@gregvancom Thanks. So I can adjust the depth of the cut so it wouldn't cut into the joist. But I can probably only cut the center of the board. What do you do with the remainder of the board on either side that isn't cut through?

      @@yukuhana old comment, but I think you're asking how to finish your cut ... I'd do that with a jigsaw

    What if the it's warping up but screws were used. What should I do with the old screws? Screw them back down? My thought is that the hole is damaged. Your example had nails.

    • @gregvancom
      @gregvancom  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Screws can be reused and moved over a little if needed. Longer screws might also help.

    I was trying this exact thing this morning before even watching the video, but ran into a problem. Once the head of the screw connected with the top of the plank it didn't really push the board down any further. Instead I just ended up stripping the head of the screw. I had to stop because I was worried I would strip the screw head so bad that I wouldn't be able to get it out of there.

    • @gregvancom
      @gregvancom  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would try drilling a small hole, a little smaller than the screw. Sometimes the screw threads will raise the decking instead of pulling it down if there's no hole in decking.

    How do you fix a deck that is extremely squeaky?

    • @gregvancom
      @gregvancom  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It might need to be removed and replaced. You can try using screws to tighten everything up or use screws to reconnect squeaking parts that are moving.

    The deck I have outside of this place I just moved into is exactly doing this but I think the joist is okay underneath. And I think I can reach the underneath if I need to because it's a raised deck that you can walk under, but of course I would need a step ladder. And I suspect that what are the reasons it buckled up was because they did use nails if they were to use galvanized what I call twisted looking nails it probably would have stayed but I see no screws on this decking except for maybe the lag bolts or carriage bolts to hold it together. We're going to power wash the deck and everything because it really needs to be refurbished. When we got this place and they inspected it it passed but I said to my son but there was snow all over the deck? So maybe he looked at it from underneath. So I want to do all this stuff before I treated again with deck stain. What a great illustration to use with the computer. So much easier instead of trying to focus on what somebody's doing with a camera far away. In my opinion anyway. Good video. Oh also you talk about cutting a section out, what are you is used to do that a sawzall? I'm still learning how to do a lot of this stuff.

    • @gregvancom
      @gregvancom  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, any saw that will work. Circular or sawzal and I'm glad you enjoyed our videos and keep learning.

    I'd rather pull the whole plank instead of cutting it to get below it.

    • @Ceares
      @Ceares 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      i thought of that first but the planks are in good condition and i'm afraid of damaging them trying to get them up, not to mention i'm lazy and this method is quicker and easier than trying to pull them up completely.
