Hello, very cool channel! Can you made a video about how to do Rominimal / Microhouse genre? please. Some cool labels of that are Joule, Botanic Mind, And Artist like Barac, Janeret, etc..
This is a phenomenal tutorial!! I started using Reason at V1 and I had never thought to use it like this. I left Reason as a DAW around V5 like many folks because it took them too long to open up the platform to third party VSTs. I just got back into using Reason as a plugin since V11 in Ableton. This was the type of experimentation/idea generation setup I was hoping to explore with Reason as a plugin. You have very elegantly laid out how to use Reason as an inspiration instrument. Thank you!
going for gut feeling/vibe instead of technical accuracy is probably one of the best advices to give to aspiring producers. when i was teaching at sae, students would come constantly asking for advice how to get unstuck and move forward with a project. well, they usually had just a basic groove going, but got stuck compressing the kick or eq‘ing the snare for hours, because they wanted to sound like noisia. also, in a world full of ultra polished, lifeless dance music, the best thing one can do is getting some grit on and embrace the dirt 🔥
This workflow reminds me of when I just used loops. Those seemed like more productive times! So now, you just make your own loops. Why haven't I BEEN doing this!?!?
So good! What a time to be alive: now we can boost our creativity with Reason in parallel with the controlled organization that Live provides! Very nice tutorial! It makes me stop in the middle and produce some new music...get back later!!! Thanks!!!
I’ve found the creative workflow so much better when I’m limited to jamming with a circuit tracks linked up with a microfreak, tr-8 and a volca bass. Recently I’ve been struggling with arrangement itself and you drop this video…. I love you
This is exactly what I needed! I'm using hardware and just got sync to Ableton sorted. I'm spending a lot of time with the Octatrack and jamming out some magical moments that are being missed. I'm loving the way this bridges the gap between live performance and production/arrangement! Awesome!
I had been trying for so long to do exactly this, but didn't manage to do so. Couldn't find out how. TY so much for such high quality content. It is a game changer. Love from México.
Wow this is so damn good! Upgrade my reason listened after you last video after thinking about the VST upgrade for too long! Please more Reason vst videos 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻 much love
Thanks to ReasonStudios for Reason. 2:17 idea sounds delicious, 3:22 ..something for me : 8:01 yeah man! 8:55 even better! 10:02 - more like this one smiles , please What?- only 19 minutes? Oh well I am going back to my Medusa. Greetings
I used to use ProTools and Reason together before I switched to Ableton, because I wanted everything to be in one location. The printing to tracks is a nice workaround to still have everything in one place and still use Reason. Really enjoying your videos. You have a very relatable vibe that I sometimes struggle to connect with in other tutorial makers. I like the way you edit your videos too. It’s really creative but still professional, easy to follow, and is engaging through out. Keep up the good work man. Looking forward to see where you take the channel.
Thanks for saying Fjaak. I had no idea how to pronounce their name. Also, I’m psyched you are using Reason. I’m a long time user. I went from hardware to software and now a hybrid. Using Reason the way you have in this video is why I’ve used it for so long. Creativity is spontaneous. Thanks!
Another outstanding video, I use Reason exclusively currently but was curious as to how it can be utilised in this way as a plug in. Love the way you make it all look so easy! Hopefully plenty more Reason videos to come.
Hey man, this was so great…thank u for making this! Im new to reason and ableton…this was invaluable information…also used your discount to subscribe to reason +, so im indebted for this …thank u
I found it a little funny to hear Reason described as a DAW that doesn't care about EQ, mixing etc when it has one of the very best SSL-based mixers there is on the DAW market. That aside, I appreciate your content!
I know you're right, I think I just need to use Reason more to find these workflow features of it that aren't immediately obvious to the untrained eye. I hope to start doing it more justice soon 🤗
My problem is I end up not ever wanting to get rid of my reason player or drum rack inside reason, just in case I want to go back and edit later and adjust the pattern/sounds etc. For awhile I never printed anything until I was certain I was done, but that ended up causing problems if newer versions of plugins came out, as sometimes things could sound different. So now I'm getting into the habit of printing immediately, while also saving the rack as is, and labeling accordingly. I will say, Ableton desperately needs a right click "bounce" as logic has. I found a useful maxforlive bouncing tool, but still end up just doing it manually.
This. Exactly the reason why I screwed up so many arrangements. Step 1,have a great idea. 2, capture it. 3, build a song around it. 4, try to fit your original idea/vibe with that what you did afterwards. And there you had it, the best way to screw up your vibe. So thanks for this video, it will surely help.
also, this method can and should be applied to reaktor. with all the factory content and the user library, it’s an infinite source of wonderfull, weird and unique sound material. just load up an ensemble and noodle around for a while whilst printing the output to an audio track, then chop it up and keep the good bits.
Very cool and inspiring video about printing!!! I think I should try this method to get over some writers blocks or just lacks of creativity!!!!! Thanks a lot!!!!!!!!! 😍
Good vid, thanks! In this workflow Reason works like a hardware synth/groovebox/drummaschine. Most of these ideas are usable in a hybrid setup. (Hardware with DAW)
Interesting perspective. I use Reason as a VST only but rarely print anything from it. I use some of the sequence devices and synths and just keep them as midi. I have a midi commitment problem which becomes a drag on my CPU.lol. My work around over the past several years is I sketch out my track in NI Maschine ,taking me out of Ableton. I create 8-16 measure loops then export all of the loops. I import into Ableton and then continue to build. It forces me to at least commit to a lot of my track (I start with beat and bass) and continue to mix, master in Ableton. I don’t use Reason too often anymore because the version i own doesn’t have scaling (11) and am not paying $120 just to scale the synths. The latest upgrade is a big disappointment, but thats another conversation. Nice tutorial. It definitely is inspiring to see you just creating some quick loops and variations to build with. Its also cool to see you working with groove and rhythm first which is how I prefer to work. Thanks for the content/ tutorial!
One MIDI sequencer I truly love, though it is very odd and requires some learning is ORCA. ORCA is free and can be extremely complex with a fully visual programming layout. There are very helpful tutorials you will need before divine in, but it is a delight to explore. Similar to this workflow, MIDI sequencers can be printed to Audio as you record - just use the MIDI channel as the In of an audio track. This way you can get both audio and MIDI tracks for your work, both for the locked sound and one you can tweak if you like. Plus, this let's you use your regular, loved synth sounds for the same process!
Still not sure why my replies aren't showing up. I assume they're not containing anything that would flag them or get them removed. I tried to respond twice to your questions, so for now I'll just say: you can find out about the ORCA sequencer by searching those two words, it's not a vst but it integrates with a DAW very easily - as easy as any other MIDI controller. You can also look on TH-cam for the tutorials to get an idea of what it is, and I'd recommend watching one before just playing about with it, since it's made to be a bit odd. But very fun!
@@solidshrek my pleasure! I only recently found out about it myself, but it has given me a different way to play with music than I was used to. I think having things like that is helpful for us all as we grow as musicians!
I liked the video, you have a nice delivery. You comment a really important thing about committing. This happens A LOT not only while composing/arranging but also in other production moments, like mixing. Printing allows you to save processor usage, but it will ease your mind about "I could have done that differently". It's a loophole, and a good way for stuff not getting out of the 8 bar black hole! Anyway... Now for the Old Reason fanboy rant: It amuses me that this "printing method" in Ableton is as archaic as rec source in reason, and using Reason's bounce in place, these "printing devices" aren't even necessary. Another fine example of how using reason in the RRP form is 3x clumsier than using reason standalone, and why my copies of Cubase and Reaper are "gathering dust". Oh well... PS.: To see how old I am (rant nº two), I've been the proud owner of a REAL GROOVEBOX in the late 90's! MC-303, what an amazing device!
:D Good comments, good points! I'm honestly a bit of a Reason newbie and need to get up to speed on how to do things in a non-clumsy way :D In the meantime I hope to just be able to spark more general inspiration in my videos using it! Loving it so far.
I like to do this using my synthstrom deluge. You kinda have to as its all stand alone in the box. I've learnt some great methods watching this though as usual underdog bringing the knowledge. Thanks ✌️
Very cool! So can you route individual redrum tracks into a Abelton or logic using the reason vst? Or is it like 1 midi track per drum sound like you did in the video? I was printing reason version 1 into acid pro back in the day 🤣 by just bouncing individual tracks out of reason. Technology changes but fundamentals don’t 👍
Awesome tutorial. Got me inspired to record as audio again in Ableton 👍. Learned alot about arrangement view. I like Abletons way of recording in a loop va bitwig. Maybe its a setting but when i record in bitwig it overwrites but in ableton i can find the loop as a long clip which is just awesome!
I've started doing this with an MC-101 - printing a handful of patterns for each track and then arranging them in abelton. Can't go back to change anything, just go forward and forces you to finish!
These videos always get me right in the mood for some noodling! So inspirational and well explained, love it. Actually at the beginning when Oscar points at his link his finger goes from right-to-left rather than left-to-right, so now i hate it ;)
Funny when i started producing there was no software, only hardware which cost a fortune. Today what’s available is incredible and the software is so powerful.
Just recently I started using this "print-centric" workflow with Reaper's "ReaRoute" virtual audio interface. I run Bitwig or ableton configured with the rearoute audio interface. Their master putputs are sent to an instance of Reason where can can print stems into the song project. Bitwig is an amazing creation tool but im always running out of resources. This method is more elegant than track freezing or bouncing in place.
Maybe I get something wrong here but wouldn't it be similar to freeze tracks in Live and just stick to those? And if you tend to get into too much detail from the start maybe limit yourself by setting up a kitchen timer?
I just made a track using a very similar printing workflow. I didn’t know it was a process called “printing” until I saw this. Good for a demo but not sure if it should be my staple workflow?
At 17:14 how did you copy duplicate all the clips by just apparently selecting the top one? (But every clip below was duplicated as well, which is great!)
Now I see you investigate for other DAW than Ableton Live.. which is fantastic.. just for the sake to have a geneal overview I would strongly suggest to consider Logic Pro aswell so it is turning out for me to be really fantastic because its sound is much more huge and is really made for professional producers in all kind in my opinion. Thx and best regards!
New sub here.. Thanks for the great video.. Even though I'm a bit late! My ? Is.. Will I notice an overall audio improvement by printing into Ableton ? Been using reason forever and don't want to lose the creativity I have but wondering if the sound will improve by using the Ableton sound engine?
I’d say there’s technically no reason for it, the sound quality is good from both! Its more the workflow that you get that will determine what saw you use!
I had the Idea you can use the combinator and put in a rack in Ableton.. so you can create specific macros in that will change parameters in your reason combinator... in this manner you can save your ableton rack for further usage
I really appreciate Oscar's knowledge, but in my opinion Ableton is light-years behind things like FL Studio where step sequencers is the basic tool with some sick advanced pattern fills. Maybe I'm wrong and not much experienced but tell why u use Ableton? Just some pros.
Sure, FL has amazing sequencing tools, and it’s really fast, but Ableton is infinitely extensible using M4L, so you can do anything you want, to the point of building your own tools if you need. At the end of the day, the best software is that one that works for you.
@@karlonehouserecords I had overlooked that, seems very cool. Max allows you to design sequencers, effects, synths, etc, but can also interact with the actual interface and manipulate clips directly! If you’re using FL at that level, you don’t need Ableton, though, for sure. Whatever works works, what’s the best for you is the best. Anyway Bitwig probably beats them both 😂
Hi I can really suggest at first create a Mixer or Combinator, then if you havent created a combinator, create a combinator. Then put a Mixer into the combinator, then put your instruments on it. Why? You can save ya combinator ensemble as a patch for further usage. Best Regards Love your videos!!
i used reason a lot as a standalone but the workflow was clunky. i later used it as a slave in ableton with 32 bit bridge. i didnt know there was a proper vst version though. it does have a superior sound of its own though.

I’d say there’s technically no reason for it, the sound quality is good from both! Its more the workflow that you get that will determine what saw you use!
It makes me insane! When do you press the Reason's "Update Available!" Button? :-)
I had the Idea you can use the combinator and put in a rack in Ableton.. so you can create specific macros in that will change parameters in your reason combinator... in this manner you can save your ableton rack for further usage
Groovy!

🤟🏻
just yes.... YEEEEESSSSSS! AHHH
I'm really happy about using reason in live. but i've never use it.
so, now lets play with reason in live and i will see, whats going on^^
do you do more stuff with reason and ableton in your classes? these videos are really helpful!
@@hollywood4834 This
@@hollywood4834 I think patcher is even better because you can create "infinitely extesinble" plugins with serial, pararell or skiped connections.
Anyway Bitwig probably beats them both 😂
How do you make Ableton theme look like that?
Hi I can really suggest at first create a Mixer or Combinator, then if you havent created a combinator, create a combinator. Then put a Mixer into the combinator, then put your instruments on it. Why? You can save ya combinator ensemble as a patch for further usage. Best Regards Love your videos!!
How much CPU is getting used by reason?
i really like Oscar's shirts
👆 yeeeeee, appreciation!
❤my workflow is the same..But I record my Hardware Synths and drummaschines grooveboxes pedals a.m.m.
Best wishes from Vienna ✌️ 🇦🇹
i used reason a lot as a standalone but the workflow was clunky. i later used it as a slave in ableton with 32 bit bridge. i didnt know there was a proper vst version though. it does have a superior sound of its own though.
Hi again Oscar.
Think now how much easier and immensely quicker is all of this inside Reason's DAW using Bounce In Place which Ableton doesn't offer.
