    I don’t get why people compare the m50 with the a6300/6400/6500 line of cameras. One is an amateur entry level camera while the others are flagship apsc models. The body and lenses for the canon are way cheaper than the Sony counterparts. For example I paid close to a grand for my m50 with the 15-45 kit lens, 22mm, eos adapter and extra battery, while at time of release the a6300-6500 were over that for the body alone. That also allowed me to use my ef glass on another body. I shot a wedding with the m50 and my canon dslr and I got great results, yeah sure it has only the one control dial making it a little fiddlier to adjust setting but I found my groove with it and it performed flawlessly. It’s also doesn’t overheat, which I can’t say for either my a6000 and a6300 when shooting video. Yeah they should never have marketed it a 4K capable camera with 120p because it’s performance there is laughable, but for a beginner stills camera and 1080p work horse in a tiny package that has great auto focus, color science, easy menus and works with ef glass I can’t fault it. Canon also doesn’t sell TVs like Sony and Panasonic so there’s no incentive for them to push the 4K envelope so hard in their mirrorless/dslr cameras.
    I love your channel by the way, you got so many toys and you review a great variety of gear, but mainly it’s because you aren’t trying to sell gear like 99% of gear review channels on the tube and that so refreshing. My 2cent rant over. 🙏

    I thought someone might have mentioned this, but doesn't look like it. I take your point about the complexity of setting the white balance. Can be a real pain when it snows and all your photos start looking blue. But the one that really bugs me is how hard Canon make it, on the EOS M50, to turn on exposure bracketing, which I use a lot. From memory, it is something like - tap DISP until you get the display with all the quick settings on it, make sure the cursor is over exposure compensation, press SET, press SET again, use the dial to set the compensation range, press SET again, and then half press the shutter button. If you turn the camera off to save the battery, it forgets all this and you have to do it all again. Arrgh! This is nothing new. Their DSLRs do exactly the same thing. I have a couple of Fujifilm cameras, (X-T20, and X-T2), and on those, you simply set a dial to the exposure bracketing position. Simples!
    I do like the M50 for it's size and weight, its flippy screen, its viewfinder (maybe not great, but at least it has one) and the ability to use an external microphone. It also has surprisingly good subject tracking for a camera of this class and price. Two dials would be nice, but not if it makes the camera bigger. I tend to shoot in aperture priority, and toggling between aperture and exposure compensation using the down arrow isn't too hard. I also love the cunning little macro lens with the built in LED light. Great fun. I keep trying to find a better small camera for vlogging on the move, but have yet to find a better, cheaper option. The ones I look at either lack the EVF, the flippy screen, or the external microphone input, or are just too big and/or expensive. I don't need full frame. Micro four thirds might do it, but the crop factor means you need extremely short focal lengths if you film hand held selfies. I have a Lumix G80, and it comes close, but it isn't as small.

    im very surprised, i myself own a m100 for a week now and i think i dont have barely any of these issues mentioned, it shows me the picture after shooting in the blink of an eye, the autofocus works fantastic and quickly, wether i select the area or let it do its magic on its own, all pictures taken with it unless i move or do something stupid turn out of great quality, the colors are natural and very satisfying, and i can see the screen well enough in bright sunlight conditions. it just has overall excellent performance and its a big shame these issues are found in your canon cameras...

    The M50 is designed to be a vlogging camera. The M, M2, and M3 are all older models that are known to have subpar autofocus. Try an M5, M6, or M6 II for photography fun. The M5 is like a tiny mirrorless 80D.

    check to make sure you are using higher grade SD cards.. the camera writes the image to the card before it displays it.. so if you take a pic on a slower SD card, it will take a second for it to write (pending raw) then show. My M100 with a half decent SD card shows an instant picture on the screen.

    The good thing of the canon white balance is that you can edit the imagein your pc, put it in your card and camera and get real white, the problem of sony white balance is that depending of what lights you got you may take good white or not. In Canon You don’t need to switch to manual, you just put your hand focus it and take it off, and you got white 😊 And I am really frustrated wth the white balnce of sony recording videos 😵‍💫

    I love the M50, found the focus peaking to be accurate. I'm still an amateur practicing with it but I leave white balance on auto and just adjust it later in the Canon DDDP4 or whatever it's called. However, I mainly focus on videography so it's perfect for me at the moment. Great video though, made me glad I got the M50 over the other Canon options.

  • @k1ng92
    @k1ng92 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I had the m50 but upgraded to the Fuji X-T2. I feel like Canon really pushes away "prosumers" from their APS-C line and holds crop sensor for strict enthusiasts which is a shame considering Sony basically puts everything in their crop sensor cameras that they would put in their full frame line (obviously sensor size is the factor of difference.) I think with RF lenses canon is becoming a serious player in mirrorless but for anyone wanting to do paid work with a crop sensor camera (main reason; saving money on lenses) then Fuji and Sony are much stronger options. Great videos and love that you give back to the community!

    Learning so much from you Markus. Love your content. Have you had a chance to play with the Canon M6 Mark ii? I've been using Canon ever since their EOS 10D. I went as high up as the 5D Mark iii but decided to give this mirrorless a chance and go small which is why I picked the M6 Mark ii. If you've used it before then please tell me if you like it or not and if you feel that Canon is still making the same mistakes with it or if they've improved. I still have time to bring it back to the store since I bought it a couple of days ago. I picked it because I'm very familiar with the Canon menu system and ergonomics, etc. Plus I also plan to use it for general/family/traveling photography and I also plan to use it to create content for my channel. Thanks. Sorry for the long post. Again, a simple: "I like/don't it. Canon has improved/has not improved" will suffice. Stay safe cool dude.

    I got my eye on Nikon 1 V2 recently on Yahoo Auctions. The slow motion is amazing even though it is a very old camera though the resolution is horrible. Canon IDK but the way they market their products always kept me away from the brand even though they “used to be” one of the best makers. They always remove a feature you really need and push you up to higher model. So, I may either go with the cheap Nikon or a GM5, point and shoot size, interchange lens with EVF. Anyways, thank you for the video, I really enjoy your videos :).

    I'm looking to start a youtube channel, and all I hear about is the Cannon M50 and Sony ZV-1 for video at the entry level price. The ZV-1 isn't an option for me, because it doesn't have touch screen (except for focusing) and lack of interchangable lenses. The Cannon M50 is over 2 years old. Isn't there something newer out that's better, or is the M50 still the way to go mid 2020? Thanks everyone, really appreciate any advice you may have.

      The M6ii is better than the M50 if you can drop 900+. But the M50 is still a very capable camera and the highest selling ASPC out there from any brand for good reason.

    Thank you! 'bout time to focus on real picture taking with these awesome cameras. I'm so sick 90% of reviewers talking only about vlogging... You really is not a Canon person (yet), haha. You use them all wrong. White balance on the them you probably didn't set to auto. And it seems your auto focusing is also set to off on your M3. Manual focusing on the Canons with Focus Peaking is amazing - again you did this wrong. Haha... Spend a little more time with it, you'll love it.

    • @MarkusPix
      @MarkusPix  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I'm not a Canon person? I was a Canon person long before I was Sony. I had Canon for 20 years. I still have twenty Canon cameras, including cinema cameras with $8,000 cinema lenses. You are right about white balance-"I probably did not have it set to auto". Are you kidding? I worked in Hollywood for twenty years and made my own 2.5 million dollar movie. Professionals NEVER use auto - with WB OR focussing. Even the Canon C100 has much easier white balance- just push 2 buttons on the outside of the camera- no menu hopping- no having to take a stupid picture of a white object first. And you are right- my focussing WAS set to off - on purpose LOL! Why? Well um... the fact that half the lenses I use are manual lenses that do not have auto focus is a good start- and secondly, I use lots of ND and polarizing filters when shooting outdoors to still be able to get f1.2 or 1.4... and autofocus does not work well when shooting through super dark glass. Canon has great skin tones and makes great full frame lenses, but their APSC cameras have a lot to be desired. You are welcome to come by and I will give you a side by side comparison of Sony, Panasonic and Canon in action. There is a reason Hollywood uses Sony, Arri, Panasonic but hardly ever Canon in big budget productions. They use Canon lenses sometimes, but not the cameras.

      @@MarkusPix Got it! Now I understand why you wanna set all to manual mode. I'm also a Canon guy since the dawn of EOS 5 and also own a Sony A7R and a bunch of superb Contax Carl Zeiss manual lenses, as well as the IRIX 11mm f4. I also own the classic Hasselblad 503CX. I do architecture photography. I shoot everything RAW. For color accuracy, I usually shoot another scene with a grey and white card under the same lighting conditions and adjust in post processing. This ofcourse is when doing professional work. For the masses, post processing is too much of a hassle and people just shoot JPG instead. Recently got the Canon M6 for just $200 new from a closing down sale. Reason I'm re-considering the APS-C is because of the form factor. Wow, you're so right Canon APS-C bodies hit the nail in the right spot in terms of size, weight and ergonomics. My full frame and medium format kits are just too heavy at times. And the Sony menu system... well, you know. Canon menu system is so damn easy and well organized. I'm not sure about the Panasonic system, but I know they're still the best for videos especially their IBIS. For the M6, you can reassign practically anything on any of the buttons outside including WB. It also has an optional external electronic viewfinder which can be used for the m3 and m100 as well. But I reckon I just need a collapsible and removable sun shade for the 3" LCD monitor which is just a few dollars on eBay. I love your reviews Markus, you're so practical and genuine in teaching photography unlike many other reviewers only focusing on pushing certain products sponsored or not. Thumbs up and keep it up! I'm still holding to the Canon M6 for now not sure if it's worth it in the long run.

    The M50 has dual pixel auto focus with tracking. No need to use manual focus.
