- Ah yes, it's that time of year again. Halloween is just around the corner and that means it's time for a new batch of Monster cereals. This year General Mills didn't actually do much to promote the cereal (no elections, no weird boxes) but it won't stop me from stocking up on Count Chocula, Frankenberry and Boo Berry in hopes that my stash will last until Halloween 2018.

I loved the Halloween cereal video! Can't wait to get my hands on the monster cereals again! Although I really wished they brought back Fruit Brute and Yummy Mummy. I really wish I could try a cherry and orange cream flavored cereal!
In the 1980s, on the back of the monster cereals the used to have huge face cutouts on the back of the box that were either the Count, Frankenberry, or Boo. You just put a piece of string with it and voila.

I wish they would make it like they did back in the 70's, tiny marshmallows and all. Man they were delicious in the day! They just don't taste as good as they used to.
FYI: I got my one and a half year old son, Scout, hooked on Cereal Time. All I have to do is sing a bit of the theme song and he runs over to the computer yelling, "Cereal!" Then, he and I hang out and watch a few videos. Scout is a junior cereal head. He spends a lot of mornings pointing at the cabinet yelling, "CAP'N!", begging and pleading for a few bites of his favorite cereal. Thanks for making these videos for us to bond over!

I'm an American expat in Japan, and a recent subscriber. I really appreciate all the videos as they provide not only a good bit of nostalgia, but also keep me up to date on new cereals. All in all, you give me a lot to look forward to when I make my first trip to the grocery store when I'm back stateside.

If they were going to do another monster cereal they'd probably do a zombie theme as they are everywhere these days. It would probably have brain shaped marshmallow as well.

Thanks for the update, I truly appreciate it. I'd vote for a WITCH mascot too. When my brothers and I were little and played monsters, I was always a Witch ( and still am !) and I was jealous that they had boxes of cereals for Vampires & Frankenstein's monster, but not a Witch. It's some 40 years later and there's still no Witch. Cinnamon Witches would be great !
I totally agree, Leela! And I think having a female Monster cereal would be a great addition considering there are no real original female cereal mascots.

So, to reiterate, Sugars dropped sometime around 2010 or so and the oat to corn changed around 1995 or so (whenever the count became predominantly solo)...
These types of cereals are SUPPOSED to get you hyperactive. That’s the whole point!
Love your vids man, I'm a grown man that never outgrew cereal lol. breakfast, lunch or dinner, doesn't matter to me. My new tradition = watch your videos with a nice bowl of cereal in hand (in my 'fred spilt milk bowl" you recommended) love it!!

To answer your question, I would make my priority bringing back the original, oat flour formulation. Not only would the taste be better and more authentic, but better for us too. We here in America (and I'm sure many other countries as well) have too much corn in our diets and don't even know it, because it's often hidden in ingredient lists as things like "food starch", which is, well, just corn. It's the kind of thing that causes some people to develop an allergy to corn. So it would be healthier for us to eat more cereals based on oat flour.

New monster cereals? Invisible Man Crunch where it's nothing but marshmallows (because the cereal is invisible) but I thought a Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde that mixed chocolate and vanilla or chocolate and peanut butter would work.
Or, my ultimate, Phantom of the Grapera where we have a grape cereal.

I didn't realize that these Monster cereals are only available when Halloween is approaching. I'm guessing that sales were flagging (probably due to the competition from myriads of other sugar bomb cereals), and General Mills decided to make it a seasonal product. People want what they can't have. This move made the Monster cereal fans appreciate them more, and this ensured that the stores were never stuck with excess inventory.

Easy choice---Bring back the original Count Chocula with the oats!!! The new version tastes like chocolate styrofoam! Bleah! I started to lose interest when you analyzed the shape of the marbits, but your idea of trying the chocolate cheerios was brilliant. Too bad it didn't work; maybe add some Nesquik? All the old monster cereals were better with the oat based formula. I hope General Mills is listening!

I suspect the move of a lot of cereals to a corn based recipe is because corn farming is heavily subsidised in the US, making it cheap and easy to obtain. Other grains such as wheat and oats are subsidised, but not the extent that corn is.
+Stormandfire Yep, when you look at ingredients of processed food and see corn in some form (corn syrup) you realize how big of a crop it is here in the US and how much the government subsidizes it. 😕

That marshmallow is not count chocula's head, it's actually a blob. I remember when they were added back in the early 90s.

Cereal Time TV you can Google count chocula's blob marshmallow and find a box image. I haven't seen a commercial of it here but I do remember seeing it on TV.
You should try Malt-O-Meal Chocolate Marshmallow Mateys. They have an oat-corn mix like the old Count Chocula, so they might taste similar.

Ha! Damn, that would have been cool. I missed that opportunity! Got the boxes yesterday and was just rushing to get the video done by this morning.
I think that general mills should come out with 2 new monster cereals named grape-zilla (Godzilla) as grape flavored and green Kong (King Kong) as apple cinnamon flavored.
And we all know Gabe loves grape flavored stuff so it would have to make sense.

Great Vid! I'm going to post it to the Monster Cereal Army on Facebook. I'd love to see a new character but I think that I'd rather have the original recipe as well as a release of Fruit Brute (original recipe). Keep up the great work!
I'm leaning toward the original recipes too, but I don't think General Mills will ever go back. I think it's more likely that we'll get a new monster in the future.
Great in depth review, you really put a lot of thought into your review. We also do a product review on our channel, and we were very happy with these cereals.
I always stock up on Count Chocula, but I may skip it this year. Opened a box the other day and it just does not have that chocolaty taste I remember. If you take out the marshmallows it is pretty bland. Wonder if you mix cocoa puffs with the Count Chocula marshmallows what that would taste like???
Ya the oat version was miles better. Bummed that the Cheerios didn't work out, but for a possible closer match to the original check out 'Chocolate Marshmallow Mateys' -- they're still made with corn and oat flour... only problem is the cereal are ball shaped :/

Got the 2018 Monster Cereals at Sam's Club. They have them in a 3 pack. This time they have a costume party.

It's way more underwhelming than you'd imagine. I have a few boxes on the very tippy top shelf -- that's where I get to keep my cereal because my wife can't even reach up there so she gave me the whole shelf.
