The 2.0 auto air deflector was designed because it was the model most likely to be used as a towing car and it needed power from stationary and at very slow speeds. When the car is stationary or going slow there’s little to no airflow into the engine bay and the snorkel is just sucking in hot air. The air deflector allows it to take in air from in front of the radiator where it’s cooler.
Cheers for that info that makes total sense! Although there is a problem - the 4f27e box does not enjoy towing! I think the box is very much at the limit of its torque capacity on the 2.0, I can imagine failures of the box with towing heavy loss up hilly terrain, good box but not really appropriate for this job.
Hi pal, just couple of ideas/modifications for the viewers out there or yourself are the following... If anyone is interested that is.... Lexus style rear lights St170 pedals (30min job at max) Chrome interior door handles(from the ghia) Interior trip computer(wiring loom behind speedo) Great video btw, love the scoop
never noticed those interior differences between the pre facelift and the facelift, so glad i have the pre facelift zetec. i did take out the silver fascia and swapped it with a second hand black one from ebay and swapped the quite rare zetec gear knob for a standard leather one. it's the subtle mods that just make it :)
Doing the 2.0 litre deflector mod. Did wonder about the benefits are, like performance. I haven’t been able to find much info like in terms of any real HP gains or whatever, but have noticed an issue where on very hot days when the radiator gets hot, it’ll make the incoming air into the engine hot and it’ll run sluggish and abit rough, so this mod will mean cooler air can get in limiting that issue. I think this can even make starting harder too if the car is started hot. Probably worth checking cooling is working effective as well on that note, but I have had this issue and heard of a few others too, so this seems like a good solution if it because the air is too hot.
I think the standard intake has no real down points, these were only fitted to the 2.0 Automatics because they may be used for towing (not a great idea the autos hate towing heavy weight) and therefore needed much cooler less dense air to enter. Honestly should have just made this standard so not paying for two different parts!
@@usuallyfixingtinkering Hello. Great channel just found. Don't know there leak is! I got coolant in Spark plug well 4 & 3. I have change Plugs, leads & Coal pack also changed coolant. *I think maybe the Expansion Tanks or cap is leaking.
@@SonofChurchill its the core plug between 3 & 4, they rust through and leak coolant into that area by the plugs. New ones are not expensive and to install new ones is very easy.
The 205/50/R16 tyres tend to be hard to get and expensive. I remember the Michelin Pilot Sports >£100 per tyre, but the 195/55/R16 being much cheaper and fitting the 16" rim and the speedo doesn't need to be recalibrated.
It's cheaper to fit 205/55/R16 tyres which mines cane with - 15 less a tyre so I knew why! But they were far too tall. No ive noticed my speedo is bang on after fitting them.
Thanks to European Ford, we got these one year later. Only downside is our bumpers stick our further to meet 5 MPH impact test. The bumpers on Euro models blend in so nicely with the rest of the body.😇 I also saw a Brit removing his Zetec IAC from above, NO EGR in the way! Impossible on mine. Someone chime in on why the Euro model Zetec EGR is not required, or is it relocated?
You can fit it to any model no issue, I believe as someone pointed out to me in the comments it's because the 2.0 auto may be used for towing purposes and needed that extra cold air coming in to help. That's logical but I can't understand if it was a benefit (and there are known benefits when it comes to cooler air) why it wasn't put on every mk1. Very weird.
It does, it takes colder air from around the front of the radiator instead of air from higher up which is also in the region of engine bay heat. You won't feel the difference but it was put on the 2.0 automatics for a reason!
I so wanted that slam panel. £29.99 new on ford with free delivery, but I have the diesel and my intercooler intake won’t be incorporated and I don’t want to buy a new one and saw it up to fit
@@usuallyfixingtinkering the intercooler scoop would be blocked. The ST170 airbox has a bigger inlet hole that is angled in the airbox. Never bothered spending the money to test it out. But blocking the warm air off will definitely help with a little more responsiveness
