Dr Ergot correct. The original smatchet was/is a great fighting knife. The cold steel smatchet is a thin bladed machete with a blade thickness of 2.8mm & 19.75” long. The Fairbairn Smatchet was only 16.5” with a much thicker blade.

@@leemcgann6470 (1) Raid military heritage for a distinctive name and blade shape, (2) 'broaden market appeal' by muddling it up with... oh, I don't know, it's big, how about a machete?, (3) manufacture as cheaply as possible, (4) ignore the fact that the result is neither one thing nor the other, and makes the Dutch reviewer's hand "go like a fucking cartoon", (5) laugh all the way to the bank.

Dr Ergot I am very disappointed with the cold steel machetes! Lots of very cool/tacticool designs! But the product quality control is pish poor! I bought 2 for short ones for snake dispatching... I cut a green vine the size of my lil finger & rolled the edge over 1/16” . No temper what so ever!

Professionally I use the silky nata. I cut wedges with it and hammer the wedges in with the nata. I cut down brush and tree roots with this knife. I pry stumps. The silky nata is an unstoppable tank of a chopper. Be careful! This is a 2 pound, ten inch long razor.

I love the Skrama. I also like the CS kukri because it's more lightweight and if you only need it for chopping. But if just for chopping I prefer a 10 dollar Tramontina 12 inch latin machete because of the weight. The Skrama is heavier but is more the one tool option because you can carve with it also. I think that extended grip is the key to the success of the Skrama.

FYI 2022 prices; In the U.S. the Silky Nata is 85$ without shipping (likely free) and the Skrama is 80$ (plastic sheath) with shipping (must be paid). The Nata is 23.2 ounces at 16.75in and .19in thick... and the Skrama is 18.5 ounces at 16.9in and .17in thick. I think the Skrama is the winner based on low weight to performance.
