    When I'm around a learner car I always give them extra room; stay a bit further back than usual so they don't feel pressured. Has everyone forgot what it was like to learn?

      but the way everything is going, it makes me wonder if everyone is going into a panic... why are there so many aggressive drivers? Is it because of technology (electronics) - smartphones, video games, etc?

      It will be 2 years since passing my driving exam. I failed twice because of impatient and ill-prepared drivers (cutting me off, but obviously that was my dangerous fault). Whenever I see a learner I instantly remember back to my struggle, and I do exactly what I would've liked back then; plenty of space and patience.

      It's not so much forgetting what it's like to learn as it is that they completely forget what it's like to be a civilised human. This same guy will bump into someone on the street and apologise immediately. Stick him in a metal box on wheels and he becomes feral

      @@sharoko1784 that is true. I once gave way to a smart car who was indicating in my lane. There was a Peugeot behind him indicating also however I didn't let him in. The Peugeot driver tapped his horn then further up at the lights can hear them revving their engine behind me with his cheap exhaust. Then had him slowing down speeding up close behind. In the end just indicated last second into my road to frustrate him more 😏. Sadly there's people out there who think it's their priority. To be honest when I'm indicating out a side road onto a main road with very slow moving traffic I do kinda get angry when someone doesn't give me way as they are moving slowly and can see me however I think to myself it's there part of the road which I need to wait for for there to be space or be given way to

      Bottom line is, he was in the right hand lane. Before indicating left, you get in to left lane with interior mirror and left wing mirror check then before turning in to left junction interior mirror to make sure no car behind you is close then slow down and repeate same manovure. He didnt do that, he stayed in right lane while coming danergously to a stop in the overtaking right hand lane and failed to check both interior and left mirror then beeped at this man car like a road raged maniac because his own attitude made him think he was not in the fault. If police were around that area, big mistake alongside few points of his license and a £100 fine for driving without due care.

    I've been driving now for 42 years and my absolute biggest peeve is people who get antsy with learner drivers (That, and those who throw litter out of their car windows =P ). 42 years and I STILL remember how utterly nerve wracking it was to learn to drive. Take into account how cars, roads, rules, and society has changed over those 42 years and, in my opinion, ANYONE with the guts to learn to drive nowadays should be issued a medal along with their licence. As for Instructors, (yes, I used a capital I, as you should when naming something important!) you guys are among the most highly under-rated professions on the planet. I mean think about it. You take ordinary everyday people, often those just out of childhood, and teach them to safely operate one of the worlds most deadly pieces of machinery in less time and at less cost than it takes to train the pilot of a commercial airliner! My hat has always been, and will always be off to both you, the Instructor, and the Students under your care.

    • @BusterGasket
      @BusterGasket 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      I beat you by 3 years (:-)), and agree with you 100%. There was an L-plate incident in front of me a couple of days ago. The student tried a dangerous overtake of a stationary bus at a stop. I suspect that the instructor used the dual controls to put that manoeuvre to an abrupt end. Meanwhile, I had stayed put having already determined that passing the bus was dodgy. Crisis averted, time lost about 30 seconds. Instructor gave me a cheery wave. That's how it's done.

      I've only been driving with my full license for 7 years so far but i still remember the first few days of driving on my learner licence and the incidents that occurred during that time. I hold back for learners in all vehicles as it's not just the right thing to do but polite as well.
      Learner lorries might not see you due to their massive blind spots and learner motorcyclists are extremely vulnerable and may swerve out to avoid anything that might cause them to lose control like a drain or a pothole. I wish the red L didn't have the stigma around it like it has.

    The problem is that peoples driving nowadays is so aggressive, They see something is about to happen in front of them, they have time to slow down but choose to speed up and make the case worse and honk there horns. I see many dash cam videos on the net that shows this. People just want to cause trouble.People just don't anticipate things.The taxi driver was just out looking for trouble. He could have carried on with the journey but chose to turn around and find the instructor.Propbs to the instructor for keeping calm (ish)

    • @Met182
      @Met182 6 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      The thing is they do anticipate it. They anticipate that the other car might need to pull into their lane so they close the gap to stop them rather than just being cool and letting them merge.

    • @Strider9655
      @Strider9655 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      This is spot on m8, I keep saying it, I keep searching the internet for it, but it's almost like we know these people exist, but they never get mentioned in anything other than dashcam videos. The media only ever mentions speeding or aggressive drivers, or those messing about on their phones, but never those who go out of their way to actively seek out trouble in otherwise trouble free situations.
      I call them "passive-aggressive drivers", they're not openly aggressive, but they drive about looking for trouble, a big one is when they speed up in response to someone pulling out a safe distance in front, instead of simply remaining at a constant speed, it's as if they've got to prove they are superior by making others look bad when they've actually done nothing wrong.
      As for this video, the Taxi driver had an attitude on him, saw the L plates and immediately assumed superiority.

      As a motorcyclist, I find this behavior intriguing. It is almost as if cars have become such a good protective shell that people don't seem to mind if it ends in a prang. For me that would mean I am on the floor and hurt.

    • @grahvis
      @grahvis 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      It is certainly strange how such a trifling incident could make another driver waste so much time and effort trying to make a point.
      It has always been my belief that some people are just psychologically unsuitable to be allowed a driving licence considering the harm they could do.

    • @mixerfistit5522
      @mixerfistit5522 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      dmail love him or hate him, I remember Jeremy Clarkson saying the best safety item to install on a car would be a large spike coming out from the steering wheel. Joking aside, it refers to what your saying about a protective shell.
      I wonder if dashcams play a part on occasion too. It gives the owner a mistaken sense that if they speed up to engineer an incident such as a car pulling out the dashcam will be evidence in their favour.

    Yes, Learner cars are discriminated against, 100%. I passed nearly 6 months ago now so fairly recently. When learning cars engage in dangerous manoeuvres in order to get past and not be behind a learner. They also beep their horn more often, drive too closely etc. That is discrimination. Having passed and removed P plates, cars are safer, don’t engage in dangerous manoeuvres. However, if I was still at the same driving ability that I am at now but in a learner car they would still do this. It is definitely discrimination!

The taxi shouldn't have closed the door on the instructor trying to get over first, then the instructor shouldn't have closed the door on the taxi trying to get over, and neither of them should have been back and forth in the lanes trying to get around other cars and dodging the parked cars too.
    Everyone needs to just relax and take their time getting to where they're going.
    Obviously once the instructor turned, the taxi driver should have just let it go and gone about his day.

    Car ”indentity" is very real....I understand when you said people can discriminate against driving instructors. I am 69 and have a 20 year old Toyota MR2. She is kept I pristine condition and really looks the part! I cannot count the number of times I have been waiting at red lights next to another vehicle, and I sense the growing angst to "beat me " from the light when they change. They bolt away like a bullet just to get ahead! As a member of the Advanced Institute of Motorists I value my license and my life and am quite happy for these cracked pots to play their little games and I draw away at a comfortable pace watching black smoke billow from their exhaust!
    The most satisfying event being a time when this happened, and directly behind one of these characters was an unmarked police car ......Which promptly put on the blues and twos and pulled him over just down the road!! .....I couldn't help but smile as I drove calmly past!......joy!

The L driver stops to engage when followed. Why bother let the taxi driver go and do not stop to to talk to them. Drive round let them follow you, it is them that are wasting petrol. I always aim for a police station is followed, this soon puts pay to road rage. I’ve learnt let idiots go, my car is way too precious to be marked or dented due to my or someone else’s temper.

  • @apsims12

    I hate it when a n** gives the "I indicated" line. Just because you indicate does NOT give you the right of way. It's called an indicator for a reason, not a "I'm doing this now, I have the right of way light"...
    Also, do people forget how it was like to learn to drive?! Whenever I'm near a learner car, I expect there to be a learner driving the car, meaning I give them the benefit of the doubt, give adequate space and accept that the car will fully obey the rules of the road, stop for ambers and not move into a junction when there's nowhere to go.
    The taxi driver in this instance was completely in the wrong and taking offence over the fact that the L car managed to keep going when they didn't. You can even clearly see that even if there was the space to move infront of the instructor, they wouldn't have been able to move anyway due to fact of how close they had stopped to the vehicle infront of them! I definitely do believe that Learner vehicles are discriminated against be many road users, usually by so called "professional" drivers most of all.

    I do feel there is some discrimination towards learner drivers. Whilst I was learning with Barry (one of your instructors) last year, it seemed that everyone just had the urge to overtake when they didn't need to. For example, I had people overtaking me whilst I was doing the speed limit, just to get in front. Also, when I took off from lights faster than other vehicles at lights, they would get really cocky and speed, so not to be embarrassed by being beaten by a learner driver. I must say, the same goes to people who own older vehicles, even though the driver is more than competent and there car having a good enough engine. People always seem to have the urge to want to be faster and in front of them. If these drivers (e.g. myself) goes from owning an older car to a newer one, they will find themselves being overtook less, even though they are acting the same as when they were in the older vehicle. The newer vehicle may have the same size engine as the older one, e.g. my car, and people will be less inclined to overtake and be cocky, just to make themselves seem better. It's seems to be that the appearance of the vehicle, will dictate whether people want to overtake and/or be cocky :)

  • @Darwinion
    @Darwinion 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Why didn't he let the taxi driver turn left? It's obvious the Merc was stopped in the left lane and the instructor even began to manoeuvre to the right lane himself. Then changed his mind and was discourteous to the taxi driver as he was clearly indicating. What followed is unacceptable, but people will hold instructors to a higher regard. The sound is muted up to the point of instructor changing his mind, so we cannot tell if he was indicating himself. I'm sure he was, and changing his mind exacerbated the situation, confusing people. That's bad driving, but is conveniently hidden.

    The thing I've learned about ragers is that there is simply _zero_ point in engaging with them. At all. It's not like they're going to listen to a voice of reason, come to their senses, and admit they were in the wrong. They are the total opposite of "reasonable" in that moment and they are just going to argue and shout at you until they are blue in the face, and they will double down on it if challenged. This is true of almost 100% of encounters with ragers. So all you do by engaging with them is ruin your own day as well.
