Saying the Irish "weren't that good" his freshman year is an understatement. They were one of the worst teams in the country. They had no Oline, no running game, and no receivers over 6' tall. Ironically, it probably one of Weis's best defenses (but still not good). His sophomore year he was pretty decent, and his numbers were great his junior year, but Charlie Weis never had a defense. My most vivid memory of '09 is when he had his defense stand up and let Toby Gerhardt walk into the endzone in the 4th of a 1-score game so he could get the ball back with enough time to try to score again (they didn't). Things might have turned out better if he had stayed in college for another year, but he and Golden Tate left because Charlie Weis got fired.
A few weeks isn't a chance once upon a time a QB was given 3-4 years to develop and be groomed he wasnt given a fair chance anywhere he went and he could've been great but oh well it is what it is
Hell- Sol Maybe his shitty attitude had a lot to do with ‘giving him a chance.’ I know if I’m a coach & some cocky ass QB acts like he knows everything & won’t listen to coaching, then goes & stinks it up on Sundays, how many chances are you gonna give him? You want to spend 3 years coaching a dude like that? Sounds to me like he just didn’t have a real passion for football & was just in it for the paycheck.
This shows that u might be the man in high school and even college but the pros are totally different.u can be a top QB.RB.DB.WR.LB.DT.and still be a bust in the NFL u have to be great not good.
Not that I’m a Clausen fan but how are you going to contradict yourself when saying the Norte Dame teams weren’t good he played on. Then saying later on he had a good amount of talent around him and he didn’t excel at the college level because of lack of talent on the team?
Panthers fan here. Clausen did play horribly his rookie year. That 2010 Panthers team was terrible though. Bad o-line, no depth at receiver, injuries. The coaching was just God awful. The defense was decent that year. I'm not sure how much was Clausen, or just the team overall.
How can you critize the coaching - don't you know that according to most the HC that you blame, was the brilliant man and mind behind Tebow's run with the Broncos in 2011?
Kiper will never admit it, but he didn’t really think Claussen was that good. But when agents pay you to hype a player, you pay the price of looking ridiculous as you are counting out your money. I don’t blame Kiper at all, I’d do the same exact thing every now and then, too. You can’t do it every year, otherwise you’d lose all your credibility. But since it is such an inexact science, you can afford to get a few wrong. Might as well get paid, right?
Kiper also got paid to say the same thing about Matt Barkley from USC. They were both coached by Steve Clarkson, who is nothing but a jive ass flesh peddler. Clarkson charges outrageous sums of money and basically tells these high school parents if their kids want to get a scholarship, they need to go to him. Clarkson is also the one who hoodwinked Lane Kiffin into offering David Sills a scholarship as a 7th grader. There was one USC QB who basically told Clarkson to get fucked. Sam Darnold.
LOL,, yes,,,,, this is great topic because it shows QBs that had the hype for years on before being drafted and we all got to be mindful of QBs of this hype.. Clausen was touted as the greatest High School QB and being recruited as a sophomore in High School by many Colleges including Coach Pete Carrol. Looking back I losted track of the High School Superstar in College because he no longer had the skills and fell from the stardom he had in High School that likely he took for granted...The Golden Boy just like Marinvich but drugs didnt made his failure.lol
At ND, he had weapons, but the team had no running game or defense. Every game was a shootout. He just wasn't that good in the NFL and playing on the worst teams in the NFL didn't do him any favors.
This is the first and final word on why ALL recruiting rankings are garbage. People who nerd out about college football recruiting rankings are wasting their time.
I'm On Your Roof dude think about it, Kelly runs the same offense as clausen ran in high school, and with the weapons of Tate and Floyd and Rudolph dude, that’s a high powered offense that would put up some points so please how can you say they wouldn’t have
Idk for sure, but the theme seems to be that cocky college players don't do well in the NFL. No matter how good they are. They could legitimately be the goat, but if they're cocky, they "just don't pan out". Almost like the other players won't help him be successful on the field. An offensive can quickly do that to qbs.
Look at the entire 2010 QB class. Tebow's considered a bust, Claussen got injured, and Colt McCoy never really got a chance, even though he showed potential. You could argue that the 3 got blackballed

There have been a lot of "Clausens"; Marinovich, Leaf, Russel. Rosen is the latest, Burrow probably next. The NFL/NCAA just put too much emphasis on tangibles.
Clausen simply peaked in college. However, he did not have good NFL coaching and certainly not with sweet checks Cam showing up his 2nd year. Clausen could have been coached into a very good 2nd but starting....ehhhh. His attitude OTOH, sucked and that prob helped derail him.
Stop...just stop. Let's clear the air. Ever since I can remember, tv has OVERHYPED almost every athlete in and coming out of college. It's all about their numbers, not the true athletes abilities and staying power at the next level. 1) Todd Marinovich (and pretty much any west coast QB from the 90s foward, 2) Johnny Manzel, 3) Charlie Ward, 4) Jameis "crabcake" Winston, 5) Alabama QBs overall and 6) Reggie Bush is just the beginning. And of course Clausen. I mean...did Clowney, or has Clowney, even come close to ripping up the NFL as touted? No. What about Brian Bosworth? No. Tony Mandarich? No...even though he might/could be considered as having the most solid 6yr split career between the Packers and Colts. What I would like to see are the analysts true percentages in picking these "once in a lifetime/decade" athletes. Now that would be telling. You can always tell a true fan pushing a narrative vs a thoughtful and educated analyst. Just close your eyes and listen. Clausen, although talented enough to play D1, was built by the media.
In college, I could not disagree more. ND has had far more overrated QB's. Dayne Crist, Brandon Wimbush, Gunner Kiel, Phil Jurkovec. All elite blue-chip prospects, and all either were average or barely/didn't contribute at ND. Clausen was multi-year starter and put up impressive stats. It's not his fault that Weis couldn't develop a good defense or run game or line. Those '08 and '09 teams were essentially nothing but Clausen and the TE's and receivers. No line, no running game, no defense.

When i was in high school.....Clauson was a BEAST!! But then he got drafted by the Panthers n his career died.💀
It’s a whole different level from college to the NFL. Everyone is a 5 star up there.
Parents that hold their kids back in school to give them an advantage in athletics should have CPS get involved. Skewed priorities in life.
Your logic for seems to be "they aren't doing what I think they should do so I should have the government take their children" okay bud, please don't run for any kind of legislative positions
@@calmdownbeavis7039 I agree that CPS isn't a great idea but putting a child's athletics over anything else is not great for parents.
@@21quepasa you're right in most cases that parents should be on their children about education %100. But in some cases man, if you have a gift for something you have a gift for something. Plenty of kids flame out and plenty of kids stick to school. But then there are kids who make it. He made it. He may not have been a good NFL Qb, but he still made it to the NFL. And made 5 million dollars and was done by age 30. He has his health and the rest of his life to be wise with a very nice chunk of change. How different would you think his life would be if CPS drove up in their minivan to inquire about his GPA? 🤷♂️🤣
Dylan white Elevating sports to a win at all costs status, even to the point of taking unfair advantage, and not batting an eye about what it teaches kids - that is something for your generation, not ours.
@@BoulderCreekSteve fair enough but im positive I can find plenty of athletes from your generation who did the same thing that you claim only my generation is capable of🤷♂️ cant pretend that the world was holy matrimony until 1997
I told a buddy of mine, who's an Irish alum, that the term "Clausened" should be trademarked as getting sucker punched in a bar.
That’s why he wore that black visor for awhile.
Thats funny, because when we run into a real putz with a limited functioning peabrain, and he says something stupid, we call that a "bender"
Wouldn't know...
All thanks to Willingham's lazy recruiting.
Classic example of a guy who reached his ceiling in high school. never got any better.
Pulled up in his stretch limo to announce N.D or USC.🤣
I remember him wasn’t he a 3rd round pick in the draft before Newton came to town.
He was the third string quarterback for the Panthers I think
He just had the misfortune of being a year ahead of Cam Newton. Carolina should have shown patience.
And pass up on Cam?
Yup! Cam is a FB who takes the snap from center.
@@ericveneto1593 lmao I'm guessing you've never played a down in your life ✌🏽✌🏽
No, I'm in a wheelchair asshole! But I suspect I've been watching football longer than you've been alive!
No, just someone who disagrees with you snowflake!
Unfortunately Mel didn’t retire 😔
I am sure he is doing just fine.
they didn't give him a chance in Carolina...didn't want him anyway....that's what REALLY happened to jclaw...SMDH
star killer mans was TRASH anyway
Because when they did give him a chance he sucked ass. Threw more interceptions than td. Dude couldn't even get the ball down the field
A few weeks isn't a chance once upon a time a QB was given 3-4 years to develop and be groomed he wasnt given a fair chance anywhere he went and he could've been great but oh well it is what it is
Can you blame them when there was a talent like Cam Newton in the following draft.
My first nfl game was Clausen first start against the Bengals lol it sucked
Didnt he have 1 or 2 brothers who played at Tennessee?
Yes he did!
I see a future on TV or a sports show for Jimmy.
I was going to blame his downfall on the Bears have no offensive line I guess I can't but I will blame that on Jay Cutler's downfall no offensive line
Just goes to show you how tough the nfl is.
His arm wasnt golden when he made it to the NFL. I remember he played against the steelers his quarterback rating by the end of the game was 12.3
Clausen's football career went nowhere in the pros but he won in life when the newspaper showed him with his gorgeous wife.
Seriously, I count the pretty wife as a big Win! And, he isn't poor, either, from his NFL money.
He never lived up to the hype in college. And flopped in the NFL. He had Michael Floyd, Golden Tate, and Kyle Rudolph yet still didn’t live up to it.
The problem is Charlie was not a good coach and the Notre Dame o-line was not that great either.
Those who reclass should not be allowed in rankings.
Is he in Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure?
This is the first and final word on why ALL recruiting rankings are garbage.
People who nerd out about college football recruiting rankings are wasting their time.
I still think if he and Tate woulda stayed for there senior years which woulda been Kelly’s first year, we woulda won a Natty Go Irish ☘️
They all had plenty off chances but sucked
@@MrImadummy Plenty of chances? Clausen was given 14 games, Tebow was given 16, 1 of them was a playoff win, and Colt McCoy showed a lot of potential. Hell Ryan Leaf, Jamarcuss Russell, Cade McCown, Tim Couch, Akili Smith, etc. were all given more chances
@@MrImadummy Tebow yes, but Clausen was thrown to the wolves on a horrid Panthers team and then was immediately replaced with Cam when the team improved and they changed coaches.
James Justice Don’t think so. Alabama would have still blew Texas out even if McCoy didn’t get injured. Bama wasn’t going to be denied that championship
James Justice Saban wasn’t going to Texas
That throwing form is soooo 2003.
Watch any QB Camp 2021. World of difference in how they teach mechanics these days. Especially side arms
So I read his wiki before watching the video...this video is the wiki verbatim with some add libs in. Like when you need to do a report and you just repeat the same thing a few different ways to stretch it out lol
Lol
This shit happens a lot! A lotttt of dudes peak in high school and end of crashing down in college what's new...
There have been a lot of "Clausens"; Marinovich, Leaf, Russel. Rosen is the latest, Burrow probably next.
The NFL/NCAA just put too much emphasis on tangibles.
Well not Burrow lol..but I get what youre saying
Saw a couple other bust on the “can’t miss blue chippers” like Seantral Henderson and Willie Williams. He’s in good company.
Told y'all.... Tebow, Morrison, milicic.. it's too easy to call em
The dude still made millions. Not bad for a cocky kid who "peaked" in high school if you asked me.
The talent never matched the hype. Simple as that.
He decided to live out his life on an emu farm with his new wife and family
Jimmy Clausen had his cup of coffee in the NFL ☕️🏈💵💰
Doesn't he work at footlocker?
Weird fact but dude is my cousin in law, only reason I still follow Golden tate
Was one of the most overrated players ever. I not for Ron paulus and Brady Quinn he'd be the most overrated player to ever at Notre Dame.
brady quinn wasnt overrated
justin alley ...you’re right ...he was terrible
In college, I could not disagree more.
ND has had far more overrated QB's. Dayne Crist, Brandon Wimbush, Gunner Kiel, Phil Jurkovec. All elite blue-chip prospects, and all either were average or barely/didn't contribute at ND.
Clausen was multi-year starter and put up impressive stats. It's not his fault that Weis couldn't develop a good defense or run game or line. Those '08 and '09 teams were essentially nothing but Clausen and the TE's and receivers. No line, no running game, no defense.
@@bundeswehr7676 Uh, the guy was a Heisman finalist, so....
SuperSparrow45 ...reading is not your strong point I assume. If you’ll notice my comment was directed at justin alley about Brady Quinn. But I digress.. Clausen sucked too.
He should have stayed at ND and got some time under Kelly.
He found himself in a pickle. 😂🤣
What happened to Rick Clausen 😂
Jimmy Clausen!
Kyper is the kiss of death.
Hey Jason, I’m interested in making a sports channel similar to yours. What do you use to research this information and where do you get your clips? Thanks.
Hey so I generally use Football Reference and sports articles on the web for the information. As far as videos, I use videos from the schools football TH-cam pages as well
What happened to his face? Was he hit by a car? Maybe explore this subject on your next video?
The guy was overrated to begin with he really didn't do much at Notre dame so to expect him to be a franchise QB is mind boggling he was kind of boosted up by mel kiper
3:35 2 former Notre Dame players.
So many NFL GMS commenting tonight lol
The Golden Arm laid a rotten egg.
I’m a notredame fan
He wasnt that good at notre dame, never won anything, bad attitude that was on record. He had bust all over him but of course thats all in hindsight
Did he need the elbow surgery? Or did someone get in his head and convince him to get it?
I would love to see Mel Kiper go away!!!
Jimmy, and Tate shoulda stayed, ND woulda been unstoppable with Jimmy tate and Floyd, under Kelly man what could’ve been
i remember the night he played linebacker u, reporter asked him how he would handle the extraordinary crowd and replied " i'll just pretend they're cheering for me " ... yea that went well
You can try all you want, Penn State will never be known for anything except the home of shame.
@@TheSelfHelpTube that doesn't make sense considering they're doing better now all the way around than they have in the last 20 years
"Did well that season... 7-6 record". Lol, is that how most fan bases grade their successful seasons?
Bro he threw for 4-6 TD's EVERY WEEK! His defense sucked ass.
Jimmy got skills
All I hear from this dude is a bunch of excuses. Great high school QB and thats about it.
