- Sometimes two obsessions converge and you end up with something beautiful. That happened for me when my lifelong love for woodworking and football collided as I took on the challenge to make the iconic form that is the Lombardi Trophy. You amaze me every time I watch you work. You make it look so easy and elevate us all into thinking we can do it too, with some effort and thought. Thank you for posting this video. I saw the trophy in a post and now I see how it was done. You are a true craftsmen.

That is amazing! I had a customer who wanted a wood football. I got half way through the lathe process and said nope! It got the best of me.
Tom, I have to say, I've watched each of the 47,891 Woodworking channels on TH-cam. And while most of them are sharing the excitement and creativity gained thru pocket hole screws. You are a true Master of your craft...The trophy build is the single greatest wood working video I have ever seen. You deserve that trophy...incredible!

That is a very impressive final product and it’s beautiful. I’m so glad you shared the video of how complicated the build was, because without seeing what was involved, it’s hard to fully appreciate the artistry of Tom’s work when you only see the finished product. Seeing how much detailed thought went into designing the various parts of the trophy and seeing Tom create it from wood is truly outstanding. Thank you.

Beyond belief, Tom! I've held a couple of the real ones and I have to say yours is more beautiful and the craftsmanship with wood is exquisite. I love what you did with the laces and stitching on the seams. The sloping/concave/triangle base - there was some serious math taking place there and then the football actually fit!
Thanks Allen, I really enjoyed figuring this out and using so varied woodworking skills. (actually was a math major and geometry was the most interesting part). Found bits and pieces of the actual trophy blueprint on you tube so that got the ball rolling :)

Are these the exact measurements of the real trophy? And can you give me the measurements I really need it for a final project thank you amazing work
Extremely close, although I did not get to measure an actual trophy. I did however do a lot of research to find the dimensions, studied the video of the making of the actual trophy, and found in my search online a photo of one of the pages of the original shop drawing that included measurements, so it is very close to the real thing. 👍

Tom - Superior craftsmanship. In some of the other comments you said you worked off the Lombardi Trophy blueprint.
How did you figure out the lengths to cut the left and right sides of the base, since the back edge was slightly longer?
How did you figure out the amount of arc to bend the front, left and right sides of the base?
How did you figure out the ratio at the top of the base relative to the bottom? Was it simply based on angle and distance?
Thanks man, I figured it out by piecing together the scaled measurements I derived from dozens of photographs online, combined with the info on the blueprint and other known statements about it like the 22” height and the fact the ball is actual size.

Thanks Bob. Difficult to say since I had a few other things going on, and there was the “figuring it out” stage. But I would guess about thirty hours or so...probably took me another half that just to learn how and edit the video!

Do you happen to sell these? I also was wondering if you could do a mini version like half the size of the one you made. I'm looking for a mini trophy for a gift. Amazing work.
Sorry Nick, I don’t sell them as yet...that was the first and it would be too costly (around $5k).
I have wondered about their potential as gifts in limited production runs, but given the quality, would fall into the “higher-end” gift category.
Maybe you can help me, what is your sense of the market for something like that in terms of price? Perhaps it would work in the executive gift world. And I like your idea for a half scale version.

Hi Tom, thanks for the reply. After watching your video again I don't think that you are off base in an asking price of 5K. The time and labor that you put in to this piece is in my mind worth the price tag. I believe a half scale version would be your best seller for the average consumer. As for a price tag on something like that I'm not sure because I am not sure how much more or less time would go into a smaller version. Either I do believe you would sell these in big quantities in they were available. Again amazing work and I love the videos. Thanks again for the reply.

What was the hardest part of this build and what (if anything) did you have to redo? Thanks
The hardest part to solve was creating the laces without the wood breaking during the bend. But I had some previous experiences that helped get through that fairly quickly. In the video, I show steam bending the cherry veneer to make the bend. Then after they dried I took two of those “pre-bent” laces and glued them together over the tighter bent form (didn’t include this step in the video). Once they were dried and came off the form all I had to do was cut to size, fit and glue them over the center laces to create the illusion of genuine laces.

what is the angle for the sides of the trophy to get them to join together if I was to just join 3 pieces of wood together?
Im not sure which angle you’re asking about exactly since there are a few different ones here, but my here’s the main one to join the three sides: As with all triangle shapes, the three angles add up to 180 degrees. Since the base is an equilateral triangle, with each side the same length, each corner is 60 degrees. So the steep angle cut is 30 degrees on each side of each piece.

But I want to get better at editing so your constructive criticism is appreciated. We are so personally invested with lots of time, experience, and effort going into make the content, we get too close to it to see objectively, and it’s a new creative and time-consuming challenge to learn how to edit the videos well.
