    Thanks so much! I've been bra-free for several years, not due to pain but to horrible itching. Probably as you said sensitivity to the fabric. I've been trying different 100% tank tops from Goodwill & Wal-Mart, with varying success. You've encouraged me to be brave and just make my own! Another very important point: turns out bras aren't good for us anyway; they block lymph flow, possibly linking to breast cancer. The book Dressed to Kill explains it.

      When I finally faced the fact that I just could not handle any type of bra anymore, even when buying a light sport bra a size too big, I started wearing tank tops and those helped but with being on camera nearly every day and have men show up around here quite often, I needed something I felt provided more modesty so I came up with this idea and it has been so much better for me

    I see in the comments that several women are concerned because they are in the plus size/larger part of the population. I wish I could go back 4yrs and tell them not to worry. I gained 80lbs in 6mo, 12yrs ago, and not wearing a bra is not an issue.

I am a quilter, sad to say, my 5 sewing machines were stolen about 6 yrs ago. Included was my 1st machine (J.C. Penney at 18 yrs) to my last Bernina; also included my favorite simple, basic, Pfaff, to my cherished Singer Featherweight 221.. This is great Heidi~ thank you for sharing! I used to try sewing old cotton nursing pads into my snuggest tanks & camis, but it was never quite right. I'm currently working on modifying a few tank tops w/shelf bras, because that inner elastic strip is nearly as uncomfortable as a bra. This pattern sure looks like it might work, even for the larger busted, who may need extra support to feel comfortable/modest. I think part of it is that we've been conditioned to think our bustline should look like something out of an air-brushed, fashion magazine~ & if it's anything less than 'at attention' perky, we simply have not achieved an "ideal" sillouette~ which is completely unnatural AND unrealistic, in nearly all situations! Women's bodies have been grossly manipulated in media to an extent where "Jessica Rabbit" is the "ideal"~ errgghh.
    Anyhow, I realize this is an older post, and I'm sure thrilled to have come across it today. May your efforts continue to be blessed. I've surely been blessed by them myself~ Thank You🙋‍♀️Samantha in AZ

    Really great to see how many women need bras to be changed, the bra industry mostly makes them out of nylon and polyester ( this fabric carries an electrical charge) to top it off the metal underwire also carries a charge in a wifi saturated world.
    I had to dump wearing a bra 7 or 8 years now, I did make a linen vest like bra because I needed some support, 44DD not fun at all.

    This is a wonderful idea. My skin has always been very sensitive to fabrics with a higher concentration of unnatural fibers. Growing up in the 1970's, when polyester became huge, my skin rebelled! When I wore a poly fabric that sat very close to my skin is when I had the most discomfort. About 18 years ago I switched to wearing sports bras made of cotton jersey, for everyday use. The itching, inflamed skin and rashes stopped! Sadly, the brand and type of bra I found most comfortable is becoming very difficult to find. Sports bras and many other active garments are being made with "breathable" fabrics. Breathable translates into rash, for my skin. Thanks for walking us thru this process!

    If you can get a Walking Foot for your machine, it will help tremendously in reducing the stretch that happens with knitted materials as you sew, whether you use a straight stitch or zigzag. A walking foot pulls the upper layer of fabric into the needle at exactly the same time as the lower feed dogs do. Both sets of feed dogs working in unison prevents the "skids" on the foot from shoving the upper layer forward and misaligning it from the lower one.
    A walking foot also helps with fabrics that have a pile like velvet, corduroy, terrycloth, faux furs and flannel. Those fabrics have a real bad habit of getting misaligned using a normal foot. It also helps in matching printed fabrics better like plaids and stripes so things stay inline and matched up. Pins can only do so much.
    Your seams on the ribbed knitted fabrics will come out much better, no stretching and distortion or rippling.
    In a very quick search I just did on line, I found Jenome walking feet ranging from 22 to about 40 dollars. Believe me, they are well worth the price! I have one for my Singer that I bought over 20 years ago for 30 dollars then. I also have one for my Sapphire Viking machine that was 90 dollars 12 years ago. I had a nice coupon the store gave me when I bought the Viking so I got the walking foot for free.
    The Janome parts are far more reasonable than Viking ones. Try one out, I'm pretty sure you'll be pleased with the results. For the most part, you can leave it on your machine all the time. Thin fabrics, thick ones, it doesn't matter. But you will have to take it off if you use a zipper foot or a button hole gadget.
    Happy sewing!

    • @RainCountryHomestead
      @RainCountryHomestead  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Maybe someday, but out of all the fabrics you mentioned, the only one I use most regularly is the flannel and (and some what with the knits) and I have never had issues with it, in fact I find it one of the easiest to sew because it holds in place well. So for now, it is simply not worth it for me to worry about another gadget but I will keep it in mind for the future. :)

    I use the soft T-shirt type bras because they are so much healthier for you. I do purchase them just because I never thought of making them. The ones I buy do not have padding so I use the inserts to cover the details. LOL. On the purchased ones there is an elastic band around the bottom but it wears out and doesn't supply any support after a while. I cut two small holes in the front and remove the elastic and thread an elastic cord through it that I leave hanging and can tie after I put it on. That way it's more comfortable for me because there is no slippage. And thank you for your reply to my question on your other video about the sewing machine. I had no idea that such a cool sewing machine even existed.

    Try an easing stitch around the outside edge of the modesty pad. Using a basting stitch, sew all the way around, don’t overlap the stitching. Pull the top, or bottom, thread, as if you were gathering except don’t actually pull up gathers. Many sleeves are done this way. Also, on many machines the feed dogs cause the bottom layer to mildly ease when you are sewing 2 layers. It’s worth a little experimenting. I’m going to try this to make nursing pads.

      I was thimking for those who would like a comfortable band, one could take more rib knitting and create a band from that by folding over, even tripling the fabric by folding a couple of times. Check to see how tight you need it and how far it would stretch in order to pull it on, then sew it on to the bottom, stretching it as you sew it on. Maybe I will just have to do an update video showing my idea here - assuming it works! haha

      So, there's a problem with the store-bought camis with what I think is called the shelf bra (extra layer of fabric around the bust with an elastic band at the bottom of that inner section). Beside being uncomfortable, the first time you lean forward, the two separate body units seem to become a single somewhat wide uni-boob. Sorry, don't know the delicate way to express that. That "lifts and separates" bra feature could come in handy here.

    I have some good camis that fit tightly enough to provide support, yet not too tight. I sometimes even wear them just around the house when I get too hot or am having skin sensitivity with my fibro. My other solution is to wear a vest when I have to go out, but don't want to wear a bra. Now that it is warmer weather, I am going to have to make a lighter weight vest. I love how you stress modesty; it can be very difficult to find modest clothing. I ended up with so many camis trying to find ways to make certain blouses and dresses modest enough; even then, it has been hard to find camis that come up far enough on my chest to do the job well.

    Thanks Heidi, great tutorial. It is nice to be able to choose how high the neckline and armholes are. It is more comfortable and gives a smoother appearance to wear some kind of tank top under clothing, partly to prevent chafing in hot weather. I like some length so it allows me to tuck a portion under the bust for that reason, also it helps to keep pants waistbands in place but I suppose this is less necessary for a skirt. Good idea not to finish the bottom edge as that seam can be quite noticeable. I love vests (they can be works of art!) and wear them constantly, and in summer all I need is a tank top underneath.
    I hope this helps to revive the art of sewing, perhaps now people have more time and need to pursue it.

      You can always do what they did many years ago. Make you some pantaloons. They would go great with your peasant skirts. When my girls were little, I made them some dresses like the girls on Little House on the Prairie. They were so cute in them. I also made pantaloons to go under them. Leggings bother me too. I feel like they are grabbing me all the time. The only thing worse, is hose. I have always, always hated the feeling of hosery on my legs and feet. In the winter I wear the cuddle dud thermal wear under my skirts. Mine are old and need to be replaced, but have not found the new ones to be made like them. The new ones have more lycra in them. My old ones did, but not so tight. The inside was a brushed kind of material and the outside was satin like, so my skirts and sometimes pants, did not grab onto them. I wear those and boots so all my legs are covered. lol If the wind ever blows my skirts up, people are going to wonder what in the world am I wearing. lol We all should do like the hippie girls did in the '60's. Just stop wearing bras all together. lol ...... On second thought. Maybe not. It wasn't a good look......at all.

    I love this idea to pitch the commercial/underwire bras. I wish I could agree that after NOT wearing those type bras, the pectoral muscles will adjust & do their job. Perhaps that applies to women under 50 or smaller breasted women, but sadly, not to D+ cup/over age 50 gals. I have chronic neck, shoulder, & scapula pain & skin hypersensitivity so wearing any bra is like putting on barbed wire fencing on my shoulder area, but when going out in public, I suffer the pain in effort to be modest. I wish this shirt bra worked for support as well as modesty. Just wanted to share for any of your viewers that fall in the larger or older category. Your correct, when one is well endowed that muscle stretches but I have been wearing the Ah Bra since the day they came out it was the best move I made but it only comes in man made fibres which stay damp all the time, so looking at how you overcame that issue with this idea I really like.
    I am making a corset or in truth they are called stays as they have cording for support, I’m doing this because of my spinal defects plus I am not able to stand upright anymore as the muscles in my lower back are damaged, I found that the old fashion corset/stays are great and they are not uncomfortable as what had been reported if you are wearing the correct shift under it. I like the fact I can wear it and it removes the weight that I have upfront as I am a DD cup size. I think these little tops will work well with the stays.

    • @RainCountryHomestead
      @RainCountryHomestead  6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      You can adjust the amount of support it gives by adjust how tight the top as a whole is or even just the inner layer, you can stretch that part while sewing together so it is tighter than the outer layer so you are not having to have the snugness all across the back too. You can also just tighten the area just under the bosom and this will help as well. Again, the more we allow our bodies to relearn what they were meant to do, you will find less support is needed. Though I cannot be for certain on very well endowed women, I am guessing that at least up to a point, this is true.

My upper arms and shoulders are quite muscular after packing around four kids and now Alaskan Husky sled dogs, These is cotton knit is just what I want, I'm also pretty sure that I'm allergic to the spandex or whatever it is because I just cannot stop itching and feeling creepy crawley after a few hours. I also need the warmth in my shoulder and upper back from being in bitter cold wind several months of the year and just wearing long john tops don't give me the little bit of support that I need.

    Thank you for making this video! I had a surgery in my spinal cord in the middle of my back in 2017 that resulted in a very painful recurring condition called Costochondritis. As a result my family Medical Doctor has had me give up underwire bras but even elastic bras set off the very painful muscle spasms that accompany this diagnosis. I am “small” sized but my girls face south which is identical to my maternal grandmother whom I “favor” in most every way. I can’t tolerate putting on the “sports” versions well due to severe back damage, thus I am wearing a strapless bra that is like a tight tube now but the elastic in it is also very painful and causes muscle spasms with me putting it on. I am wondering if I could adjust your pattern somehow so it won’t look like my girls are looking south when I wear it as the concept is priceless for my painful situation. I will also add that I don’t wear tight fitting clothing and layer clothing also for modesty. Blessings and Hugs, Firegirl
