    Coming from devs of companies whose open world design have become stagnantly complacent, their criticism of Elden Ring's UX & quest design and deeming Elden Ring not worth its level of critical success is hilarious. Some of the criticism is valid, but the way they lambast the game's score and success comes across as petty.

    Another thing to be said about Elden Ring is this initial period of discovery. We're all learning the game by trial and error and sharing our experiences. Despite being a single player game for the most part it never really feels like you're playing it alone. The community is always there to give you tips and tricks and tecniques, and if you're stuck in one part or a boss, there is a high chance that other people are struggling as well. That is a very rare feeling in games now a days and I miss that a lot. Even though some moments might feel cheap and unfair, I wouldn't have it any other way.

      But for the most part, the questing gives you no information at all on where to go. Having no markers (aside from the Volcano Manor assassination targets) is nice and feels more real, but we should be able to have more clues on where to go to continue the character's journey. Look at Millicent, she goes to multiple spots on the map and somewhat randomly, before you can finish the quest

      That's actually really nice to know.
      There are a few points where the game could improve on clarity of UI. For example there still is no option to compare armor/weapons in the store with currently your equipped armor/weapon, a staple for the RPG genre that has been around for decades. It's also not obvious that upgrading shields upgrades stability like it does in previous titles because many shields gain a fraction of a point of stability per upgrade level, meaning they often don't get an increase in stability until +2.
      I'll also say that for a same that has so *many* upgrade tiers, the game is really stingy about handing you upgrade mats, especially compared to DS 3 where they just showered you with titanite shards. Honestly kinda weird, you'd think they'd be more generous with upgrade mats due to how many weapons there are and how open world the game is.

      In short - they did a very poor job with the PC controlls. Instead of developing optimized controlls for mouse&keyboard and making use of all the advantages they have we are stuck with controlls that still feel like a f...ing controller.
      They should also integrate a comparison between equipment. Especially when in a shop there's no way to compare the items on offer to what you have and that's really annoying.

    Elden ring is the first time i’ve been truly sucked into a game since Breath of the Wild, this game is just everything I’ve ever loved about videogames in one gigantic package. I had complaints about the UX in my first 8-10ish hours, but those went away once I began understanding the game better, and soon as I had that realization the game all clicked together and I’ve had an overwhelmingly positive experience since. When you take the time to understand the game’s combat and progression mechanics, it actually works and feels infinitely better and more meaningful than the bs open world design of other games

    • @ararune3734
      @ararune3734 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I'm in the same basket, never played games like this, thought it wouldn't be for me, I was dead wrong. Possibly the best game I've ever played, but I have to say I still do think the controls could be so much better. There's loads of quality of life improvements they could make, and PC gamers were neglected, not even talking about performance issues right now, but they didn't even bother making the UI/UX elements display the PC controls, so you had to guess what button it is on the keyboard.
      I play with a controller right now, and it displays the keyboard buttons. Surely they can detect you're using a controller and display the appropriate keys. Next, whether you're using keyboard or controller, shifting between weapons/flasks/sorceries/incantations is quite inconvenient, using arrows, really? That should be an easy fix, whichever way they do it, they chose about the worst way of going about it. Either allow custom keybinds for every weapons/spell/flask or make a little wheel that allows quick switch, or both.
      Other than that, I agree, this is actually the first game that actually feels like open world. I don't have to do anything in any particular order. For all the small complaints I have about the game, I absolutely love it despite all the shortcomings.

    • @puddingcatsteamboat6393
      @puddingcatsteamboat6393 2 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      i can agree with the first part but the outpost captures are some of my favorite things to do in Ubisoft games and i often quit playing them after i’ve done them all because the main quests usually aren’t as fun as figuring out how to take down every enemy in a giant camp. if Elden Ring had outposts like that in it I honestly wouldn’t mind at all. the very first enemy encampment you encounter outside the castle in Elden Ring felt a little like that and i loved it, and Elden Rings AI is hilariously blind unless you are standing directly in front of them.

    • @nicholassorensen9035
      @nicholassorensen9035 2 ปีที่แล้ว +55

      Ubisoft games…. Capture this outpost. Climb this tower. Do it with a gun. Do it with a gun in A different environment with a higher numeric title. Now do it with a sword. Do it with a sword in a different environment with a new word after the title. Now annualize, and monetize. Aren’t we good at this? Oh, rainbow six siege is making money, let’s make the same game but against aliens with less content, slap a new title on it and watch the idiots pay for it.
      The last good assassins creed was Black Flag, the last good Far Cry was 2, maybe 3. The last good Rainbow Six was hands down Vegas 2.
      A creatively bankrupt company, clinging to the same IPs that once made them great, while instituting changes ONLY with money in mind. Not creativity or fun. Once a company experiences success, they all seem to follow the same path, or get bought up by someone who will force them down the same path. They need to remember they were once a small studio making quality games with talented individuals, just like From Soft. Instead of crapping on them, maybe take notes.
      If I spent all my money on McDonald’s and cigarettes, but got mad at the dude who saved and bought a house… is the dude who saved the idiot because I refused to change my ways? Nope. Not to anyone who isn’t an imbecile.
      Want to know why people buy annualized games? Because they’re bored to tears of your game a year later. Elden Ring will be being enjoyed for many years to come,with hundreds of hours of genuine diversity in playthroughs and builds, new discoveries, and ACTUAL entertaining gameplay. Ghost recon used to be a hard game, so did rainbow six, now it’s an arcade game. Elden Ring is difficult, almost like it’s intentionally catering to adults who have jobs and can spend money, not petulant children who use mom and dads credit cards to get a new hat in the game. Get a clue.
      Rant over.

    I'd say one of elden rings strengths is that it feels more like an actual open world. Having quest trackers, having your map show recommended levels, enemies having markers indicating relative difficulty, makes it feel like you're being funneled down a specific path. Exploration isn't really encouraged in that way. In elden ring, when I was low level I stumbled into caelid, did my best to progress through it, made a decent way and eventually made the decision for myself to come back later. I COULD continue because while the enemies were hard they weren't impossible. But I realized I was out of my depth. I didn't look at a map and go "oh guess I shouldn't go there yet", or see skull markers over enemy names. It was in itself a form of discovery, and discovery is what makes the idea of an open world appealing.

      That's because in Elden Ring there are reasons to explore. The game is hard and has all sorts of cool weapons, items and bosses. Exploring is the only way to find those. Why would you explore in a game like Far Cry when you can use every random machine gun to kill everyone? Good luck beating Elden Ring with early weapons and no upgrades. Or in Assassin's Creed Odyssey, where you can pick any random weapon and upgrade it to your current level, making most weapons feel the same. Also, there's no point in getting stronger because enemies scale with your character. There is no real progression except when devs want.

    "This daring and vague adventure"
    This, right here, is the magic ingredient.
    Since the franchise heavily relies on player skill and not just metrics, there's always room for improvements and countless "I did it!" moments for the players.
    And because it's vague, everyone has their own adventure, which lends itself beautifully to share it.
    It's a much more personal experience and based on the numbers, it shows that it's something not just consumed and tossed aside.

      @johnsullivan937 2 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      Exactly. I remember when lots of games in the industry kept the main character vague/mysterious. Master chief a prime example. The devs understood back then that the more ambiguous the character was, the easier it is for the player to insert themself into the main characters role and really feel a connection with the game. Nowadays every damn game needs 4 hours of artsy fartsy cutscenes that explain in overwhelming detail every aspect of a characters life. Its like they've forgotten we are playing games, not watching a movie.

    As of now, I have 24 hours in the game, and I have barely even left the first area, Limgrave. This game is phenomenal. I haven’t even went online yet except for a few times to help my brother kill a boss, as he is new to these games. The game does NOT hold your hand, I had a chest I opened teleport me to an absolutely cursed mine that I was WAY under leveled for, and they wouldn’t let me fast travel out of there until I found another site of Grace. I was MAD, I lost 7,500 runes which was a lot of money at the time. Yet, I love that about these games. The idea of a genuine challenge, and a game that doesn’t hold your hand or spoon-feed you instructions. Instead, it says “Here’s the mountain. Climb it.” except they leave it up to you to find the gear you need, and to train yourself to gain the skill necessary to progress. The immersion is on a different level as well. “Immersive” does not mean “realistic”. Immersion is genuinely being afraid to die in the game, so much so that your hands are shaking. Immersion is riding your horse on a mountain trail, and noticing how beautiful the scenery is, and just stopping to stare at it. Immersion is fighting a king corrupt with power who has transformed into a massive abomination while a full orchestral soundtrack is playing, and you feel every swing of your weapon. Fromsoft have created one of the last few modern games that create that sense of wonder and awe I felt as a kid when I played the first Halo game. We’ll be playing this years to come. Just like how Bloodborne still has a massive following and player base despite being around 6 years old.

Elden Ring has apparently been in development since well before Sekiro, likely around six years total if I recall correctly.
      there's also a culture of refusal to reuse assets from prior projects. a bunch of people got upset when the Network Test came out because a couple of the door opening animations were reused from DS3. absolutely bizarre. if it works, if it's good, and if it saves you some time, why would you redo work you've already done?

    • @MaryArts

      Exactly: world design
      Which is what Devs tend to forget. You can lead a player without quests and narrow one way paths. Of course it requires a little intuition and experience on the player's side but Devs can create studies or ask beta testers if they have a good time finding their path through the world.
      Until you defeat Godrick, the path is super clear without being narrowed down. After that you can do whatever you like, while still being drawn to the bestest places, like seeing the Academy or the castles in the distance. You know what to do. Or getting to the destroyed bridge beside stormveil castle. You find a path and it leads you to the north. You didn't give up at the bridge and no one told you to go that path, but you thought: "Hmm, that platform looks like it leads somewhere I think. Lets look further into it"
      World Design is very veeeeery difficult and usually Devs tend to either make the world directionless or make you go through paths that are closed off in all but one direction.
      When the Devs critizise Elden Ring, they definitelly don't get what is making it great: Character and World Design.

      While I'm avoiding the game for now because of the issues (FromSoft is notoriously inept at making PC ports), I actually really love this game and I'm gonna slow burn it until I'm satisfied, once they figure out how to not suck at optimization.
      Also FromSoft doesn't like the words Holy or Knight. They historically censor those words despite their use within the games themselves. Their word blacklist has always been terribly made and letters should be contextually whitelisted if they're certain full words.
      So many tiny little things keeping this from being a perfect game, but it's so close that I can overlook much of it.

      Question, is Elden Ring as brutally harsh in difficulty as other Souls games? While there is much to love in them I personally just cannot deal with that kind of difficulty, I am gettint old and do not have enough time and patience for it. Out of those games the ones I played the most were Dark Souls 2 and Sekiro, former I played about 50% through and latter about 70% through before I just had to stop because they stopped being enjoyable and the frustration started to eat me and my sanity from the inside. The rest like Nioh and such I barely played 1/3 before moving on to other games, I did not want to deal with that same kind of frustration again.

Hell the main quest is "Become the Elden Lord" now HOW you get there is on you. Are you a mage nukeing mobs from range? A sneaky bandit fixated on status effects? Or trying to be that warrior right in the middle of the fights? The game is SO open you can skip the tutorial outright. In my mind I have this goal of where I want to go, and along my path I’ll find a ruin, tunnel, or something that catches my eye in the distance. You never have a set path in Elden Ring. Each persons game will be unique because it’s your own path. Not a predetermined quest line with limited area to explore. And when you think you’ve explored everything in this game, you find out there is a whole new world beneath the world. I’ve played 84 hours so far, and I haven’t finished exploring the top of the world. I’m just getting started on the sub levels. This game is spectacular.

    • @Vandalgia

      And the reason why the lack of guide in this game work so well is because most of its quests refrain itself from doing your usual fetch and eliminate quest. Although well, to be fair some quests do exactly just that, but the essence of these quests are mostly the exploration. You have to explore to find out where you should go to progress the quest. And most of the time, finding the NPC is all that it require for you to progress the quest, which put further emphasize on the exploration.
      And the formula works wonder here because you'll definitely be rewarded with the exploration, even if you stray from the quests. You'll find new stuffs that you'll be curious to try. Not to mention that fighting the boss itself is a reward in itself and some times you'll also find yourself being enveloped in a majestic environment that makes you wonder "what the hell is that?" which is also a reward in itself. Tbh I never felt like this in open world game, like wondering and being so engaged within the environment itself. Probably the first and the last game before this that makes me wonder about the environment itself is, and I'm not even joking here, Skyrim.

      Time will tell though if they are successful in the endeavor. Mind still good people at CDP I'm sure, but the leadership and management need to fix itself before more long-term damage than current. I mean losing much of the talent isn't so easily replaced if trying to give us a good game.

    Souls game virgin here. I've been absolutely LOVING elden ring. Currently level 104 with 84 hours in. Haven't felt a sense of discovery in a game like this since breath of the wild. Can't wait to do a second playthrough with a faith build. This game DESERVES every bit of praise it gets.

      I'm not even a fan of souls games in general. The only experience I have is playing DS1 when it released for a few hours and then quitting because it wasn't really for me.
      Elden Ring however has caught me. I feel like they've done such a good job with this game that it managed to catch the interest of people who aren't even fans of the genre and make it enjoyable for them without losing the "souls spirit".
      It still very much feels like a souls game, but it feels like so much more on top of that too.
      It's an absolutely stellar game.

      They killed themselves with that formula, like, what can they do now to "upgrade" their new games based on their own wrong perspective of what a good game is? The only way would be to copy games like elden ring and for them that would be "downgrading" so they essentially put themselves on a corner. The next ubisoft games will just be movies where you decide if the protagonist is good or bad and then get good or bad ending.

    At 4:20 You were talking about having a quick select wheel thing for items, it's not perfect but if you put stuff in your pouch it acts in that kind of way.

      Honestly, I prefer it because I don't have to look, I can just do the quick button combo and use the item. I always have the poison (or whatever status effect is in the area) curing item and my horse whistle on there, and then either buff items or my utility items, depending on how difficult the area is.

    Let's keep it real, Western developers don't like seeing Eastern open world games do well. That was a thing for a long time that people just accepted Western developers did better, and no one likes being challenged.
    I'm glad he kept bring up Breath of the Wild, because that game got a lot of vitriol thrown at it for simply being a good open world game that's different.

      I don't think its honestly that deep. All three of the developers, from the tweets, worked on Horizon Zero Dawn and Horizon Forbidden West. (extensive employment with Guerilla Games and working on the Horizon titles)
      It prolly just comes down to petty jealousy that Elden Ring started hogging the spotlight in the month of February when Horizon West was released. Almost 100% sure these same three devs wouldn't have said anything about Elden Ring if it had launch in a different month.

    I just think it's amazing that this is Fromsoftware's first open world game, and yet the open world aspect is already infinitely better than most other developers with years of experience making open world games, and with just a jump button, Elden Ring manages to put in more vertical variety in it than games with a complete climbing/parkour system.
