@@toledochristianmatthew9919 Not really. NFTs are scams, many things going on in the crypto space are scams, but crypto currency is what it always has been, a decentralised currency. The point isn't to "benefit from it". Yes some people did make millions from it's rise, but people treating it like stock (as they do with NFTs) are just morons who don't understand how to trade real stocks. The point of crypto is as an alternative to fiat money which can be controlled by the issuing government.
Right now it still doesn't have a great deal of value to the average person because it's mostly only accepted for illicit or shady transactions. But as we saw with the canadian trucker protests, the west is becoming more and more openly authoritarian and the government will freeze dissidents bank accounts on a mass scale, they will render your fiat based finances inaccessible if you cross them. You no longer own your money if the government disapproves of how you use it.
The big problem for crypto right now is exactly those fucking idiots who think it's a stock (as well as general volatility in the concept). Whilst the price of coins can fluctuate wildly, it will never be a widely accepted currency, shops wouldn't know how to price things, who's going to accept a currency that could potentially plummet to half it's value in a week? But to dismiss it entirely is foolish. I certainly HOPE it can gain stability and thus traction and that we'll see more and more real life applications of the big cryptocurrencies, with every day goods and services payable with bitcoin. Because when western governments go full China against dissenters and people who disagree with the prominant political narrative, I want us to still have the ability to live our lives without the government first giving approval.

Gaming is fully mainstream, and at the same time the quality of games is at an all time low. In that context it's hard to imagine a game like Elden Ring, which is an actually good game coming out into a massive market that's almost completely bereft of them to a waiting audience who want to play anything that's ACTUALLY A GAME instead of a microtransaction shop with a stillborn "live service" attached to it, doing anything less than absolute gangbusters. No no, that's not even the biggest point. The big one is that Dark Souls is a generation-defining series, one of the most important in the entire history of videogames, and assigning a writer who doesn't understand the position Elden Ring occupied within gaming culture to write about Elden Ring makes it immediately obvious that they don't understand the entire culture of the subject they're writing about. It's like an American writing about Japanese Noh plays and saying "Wow, it's weird that they move so slowly."

"Dying again and again, sometimes for hours." I'm not a souls gamer. Elden Ring is my first Fromsoftware game and it took me about 3 tries to realize I was too under leveled to take on the Tree Sentinel. I went around killing soldiers and monsters in the open world to level up a bit, got my horse, and got my first summon. Then I came back for revenge. If you choose to beat your head against the wall in elden ring I have no sympathy for you. I understand some people actually enjoy the challenge and actually embrace fighting things that are over powered. More power to you if that's your thing. But the people that complain about the difficulty, I can't get behind that. If you're that frustrated you just simply aren't utilizing all the tools. There are many ways to deal with difficulty in this game. You can leave a boss fight, level up and come back to it later. You can summon. You can even pull two other players in to help you in co-op.

Ya, got one too and gotta say that barely qualifies for a logic statement in a paper that my 5th grade teacher would have accepted.
Hell I said it in another comment but I only got through Limgrave so far but from that area alone I could easily make a 25 page paper on that area alone if i wanted to (don't really want to spend the time right now though unless someone would pay me lol)...hell from what i was taught in highschool i could easily do 15 pages minimum (honestly probably could do 25 pages even from just highschool knowledge that'd be on par with any knowledge i got in college as the English degree was kind of a joke imo as outside of 2 classes all o them were read and review style classes (fairly useless for what i wanted from the degree tbh) with the other 2 actually focusing on the editorial process/strengthening my grammar/writing (which was my main goal tbh as i wanted to get into book editing...granted any editorial jobs i could find needed the degree on top of 3 to 5 years experience even for entry level jobs (BS imo, they just want experienced editors out of work desperate for a job)).
Granted likely another example of a failing public education system in the country imo (may be some areas where it's good but they're the outliers from what I've seen...in Dem states though the result is almost always failure). So happy nowadays my mom and dad shelled out the cash for a private school where more focus was put on thinking critically and making sure we had a strong foundation step by step in the language before progressing further and rushing class subjects. Basically a good comparison to my education and theirs could be the story of the tortoise and the hare: in order to get everyone to graduation the public schooling system (hare in this case) rushes all the subjects taught to get out as many as possible, on the other hand my school (at least when i was a student...after seeing what my sister, who is 10 years younger than me, was taught there it seems like they started to follow the public school approach as well (maybe not by choice) and she was struggling with far more things than i ever did due to some topics not being covered long/well enough) took the slow and steady approach (tortoise's) and made sure the students understood what was taught before moving to the next subject/topic so when i got into Highschool and the distribution of public and private school students was about 50/50 i noticed all the kids that came from my school/other private schools had a far easier time understanding and excelling in the school than the public school students where only the top of the top students from there were able to compete for the most part with the private school students when it came to grades. As for college it became even worse for the public school students where most of the top students were either coming from private highschools or were adults with years of experience to help them learn topics properly and the worst were mostly students from public schools in my city (heavy Dem city btw which is likely why it's as bad as it is as their education policies suck).

I know this is probably a tired point by now, but they get away with this because they're not hired based on their merit as a writer and rather on their ideological compatibility with the people running the media outlets they apply to. It is pretty well documented at this point that mainstream video game journalism is extremely cliquey, nepotistic and rife with quid pro quo arrangements between writers.
It's why you'll often see more or less the exact same article pushing the same viewpoint pop up on half a dozen different sites all within a few hours of each other. Because many of the writers are all in the same group chats, despite working for different companies, coordinating what to cover and, often less scrupulously, what not to cover.

In truth, it doesn’t really matter. But Dark Souls, despite not being a trilogy per se, has a meta narrative, and it is a grand one. You’ll get the references and see what has happened to the gods, Anor Londo, individual human nations, etc.

1:40 - Elden Ring definitely does not get harder. If anything, it gets easier, due to a combination of getting used to the mechanics, and also finding better gear and abilities that are often times ridiculously powerful, if not completely broken.

Not a souls guy or fan. I picked up Elden Ring expecting that I would find it hard to get into. Ive now spent 40 odd hours with the game. Its not flawless but there is a lot of flexibility in how you approach a given situation. Progress has been slow but its allowed me to immerse myself. Each boss I fell feels satisfying. You feel yourself becoming stronger and better at the game. So for someone like me who is entirely fresh to the series to get stuck in for 40 hours? It must be doing something right.

Same for me. I played some of the older souls games as well as soul type games and I never enjoyed the combat. ER combat is mediocre as well. What sets it apart though is the open world. Souls games are on rails and that is what bored me and made me drop them. I love to explore the world and find interesting locations and cool treasures with unique enemies. That's what kept me in WoW for so long even though it's honestly not that fun to play. Having a huge environment filled with stuff to find keeps it entertaining.
They succeeded with the open world because they understand what it's about. It's not like many huge open world games that are vacant and offer nothing of interest. Creed games are a perfect example of doing it wrong. While ER is how to do it right.
I'm near the end on ng+ at around 180 hours and still having fun. I have a couple more build ideas I want to try out (on #5 right now)

Ya...I'm 40 hours in and only got through most of the Limgrave stuff (from what i saw online there's some stuff i haven't done yet there too) and a bit of Calvard and the Lake regions (probably gonna focus on Lakes as the levels are lower there so Caelid feels more like it's intended as the 3rd or 4th region you explore). I got the game day 1 and have been taking it nice and slow with swapping around to different games or no games at all to avoid burnout and will likely be playing this game up until late 2022, maybe even into 2023 (which means I'll likely get spoiled quite a bit but don't mind it that much in this type of game tbh, so far kept spoilers on late game bosses to a minimum though and only know their names at best not their fighting styles or appearance). While not my first Souls game (DS1 would be but never got far and played Bloodborne and Sekiro too which i also didn't get too far in) Elden Ring is the Fromsoftware game I've enjoyed the most so far for similar reasons as you.
As far as difficulty goes though not really too hard as long as you don't deliberately handicap yourself and stick to specific levels/levels of equipment/skills at specific parts of the game and don't mind going with any method possible to win and don't mind grinding (especially at cheap spots like the Iron Ball in Caelid)/looting higher level equipment and skills early. Everyone trying to say it's too hard are likely those that refuse to do either and likely complained that even Pokemon Red and Blue were hard back in the day/playing it now even though they're easily some of the easiest games out there as long as you either grind a bit and, more importantly, focus on setup options as well as pure offensive options (basically stat boosting skills or skills that impair enemies...i use Pokemon for this example but a game that does it better due to not having a 4 move limit would be some of the older Final Fantasy games, Dragon Quest game, Falcom's Trails series, etc)...basically they only look at the brute force method to win and nothing else (hell even Namco's Tales series, one that many call a mindless hack and slash, has many games where you need to put a bit more thought into what you're doing when playing above the Normal/Medium difficulties (those two mindless play can work i guess) as you need to understand the length of a spells casts, whether the artes knock down/knock away opponents or if they can knock them into the air/off from lying on the ground to follow up with a combo, what artes easily combo into each other and flow well by positioning you the right way for follow up attacks, do some artes haver properties that are strong or weak against specific types of enemies, how does the respective game's or character's gimmick mechanic work (most games or characters have 1 new gimmick unique to said game or character that can drastically change how 1 game is played to the next game while keeping the same basic combat system in most cases (sometimes the combat systems take a more drastic change such as the shift from directional inputs plus the artes button to arte trees in some games), and so on).

Following our midterms in Shakespeare, I found him swearing up and down that our professor was horrible and several other expletives I don't feel like sharing. I asked him if I could give his paper a look-over and he obliged. What followed was a meandering text not unlike this NYT article. When I read his submission I was baffled how we were in the same course. Eventually I asked him if he knew what the prompt was. When he replied in the negative, I asked him why he hadn't asked for confirmation from the professor. He just shrugged at me. I recommended that he visit during office hours, but I don't know if he ever did. I asked myself how the hell someone expected to get into journalism if they they didn't know a thing about what they were writing. I now find myself asking the same question.

Certain mechanics, spells or weapons will never equate to an actual Easy Mode. Especially when FS brings out nerfs because fun isnt allowed in their games.

I think Jesus would rather each of us find our own spiritual path to enlightenment than follow others, i've never felt anything concerning organized religion's fairy tales, but skateboarding and other related stuff, snowboarding, bmx, mtb, etc had a real, deep, and spiritual meaning and was the thing that inspired me to better myself, overcome challenges, slay the demons of fear, insecurity ans such, and basically give me a reason to live. This story may sound hyberbolic, but its not. I was 29 years old, working a dead end job and was honestly heading toward a life of a complacent underachiever. One day, I picked up Bloodborne, got immediately crushed and put it down. However, something about it stuck in the back of my head and I picked it back up only to get crushed again. However this time, I stuck with it. I got better and as the credits rolled after the final boss and that rush of endorphins finally wore off, I had a major, life changing epiphany. I realized that even though I've never stuck to anything, that if I put my mind to it, I am capable of doing difficult things. All these years later and I just graduated college at 36 and I'm now working as an electrical engineer on the long road to getting my P.E. My guess as to what happened? The NY Times editors probably had their weekly meeting and were stunned by the sales for this video game and reluctantly decided it was news that should be covered. They probably in turn assigned the article to some reporter that was on the hot seat or close to retirement or something. IT is obvious that the reporter was pissed at having to write an article about video games for the NYT.... most likely felt like their talents were being wasted. I would be shocked to learn that the by-line is someone less than 55 years old. Then again I'm in my 50's and I understand the cultural importance of video games.
It is snobbery like this reporter and his/her/their editor demonstrated that actually hurts gamers because they literally don't think of video games or the industry as important AND as a result this lets executives of those companies fly under the radar for consumer practices that would sink a chief executive of almost any other industry.

This is what I think happened - both of these news outlets were trying to make a news article about Elden Ring due to its popularity and to hopefully draw traffic from the gaming demographic. However, the writers didn’t want to write a positive or negative review as either will draw negative criticism, so they wanted to write something relating Elden Ring in a new way, and/or didn’t have anyone experienced enough with playing the game (likely both).
Of course, they instead wrote news articles that had most Elden Ring players, whether they liked or hated the game, to band together and ridicule the ridiculousness of the comparisons.
Side note: Especially in regards to the NYT article, absolutely reminded me of a middle school essay I wrote when I couldn’t access any sources for my topic and completely BS’d it (which I unsurprisingly received a low grade for)

Had the pandemic happened twenty years ago, bubsy 3d would have been the most successful game of all time!! For those who don't know, the story of bubsy 3d is about a cat or whatever. In conclusion, bubsy 3d, bitcoin, the pandemic, and the metaverse all exist, and for that reason, they're basically the same thing.

The media and the news that do NOT know anything about gaming should not be talking about gaming period. It makes as much sense as a person who hates cakes and is not good at them, try to get a job at a cake-shop.
EDIT: "You can beat a boss by defeating it with skill or by CHEEZING it with no skill involved." Wait a minute, I thought that the difficulty made this game "inaccessible" and the people being told to "git gud" were people who were dying/losing all of the time. Does that mean that the SJWs that were claiming that "difficulty = inaccessible" were lying the whole time? Which they were always wrong to begin with.

Can I just point out that there's a difference between Story and setting.
Story is what you do during the course of gameplay, the cutscenes being used to convey dialogue among other things. The item descriptions, backstories and lore are all part of the setting.
Soulsbourne's have several stories all grounded in a rich and deep setting, but they're fairly simple to tell on the surface
You're a cursed hollow who can't die, and you want to have a word with the manager. You can rekindle the flame, let it die out, I think you can lead Solaire to it, it has a few endings.
I've heard Elden Ring has 7 endings, which are the basics of the story. Whatever triggers you have to hit are key plot points for that story. The setting doesn't change between play throughs, but as a video game, the story should

Can I give you a little advice. Elden ring is not a hard game just like I see the Souls game are not a hard game series. They are challenging I'll give you that but if you take your time and play them like what they are an RPG level up here in there no matter how high your level is in Elden ring you'll never be invincible but at least you'll be tougher to kill the higher your level is also you can summon other players into your game there's no shame in that or let yourself be summoned by other players you do not drop your experience points upon death if you're a cooperator so you can just help players back-to-back and watch as your experience points goes up I've already grinded 17 million runes it's enough for me to level up 34 times but I want to be within summoning range of most players so I can help with boss fights. I hope you give Elden ring a try someday
