John Salley: Magic, Not Jordan, was the Reason Isiah Thomas Didn't Make the Dream Team (Part 4)

  • part 5: • John Salley Addresses ...
    part 3: • John Salley: Kobe Ente...
    part 1: • John Salley Doubles Do...
    ----
    In this clip, John Salley explained where the origin of the perceived beef between Michael Jordan and Isiah Thomas started. According to John, it was sparked by Isiah's nephew wearing a Chicago Bulls jersey which made Isiah develop a certain disdain for the Bulls. But John explained further that it wasn't personal. He also said that the story of MJ keeping Isiah off the Dream Team was a myth and in fact, it was Magic Johnson's doing which kept him from making the Olympic squad.
    Later on, John Salley talked about the Bulls becoming a force only after Scottie Pippen assumed more responsibility and that the narrative around the "Bad Boys" of the Detroit Pistons was started by Phil Jackson.

      Hating someone as a person is different than how you veiw them as a competitor. Everybody hates a vicious bad dog, unless that Dog is guarding their house. See what I mean....it all changes when you are on my team.

      Everyone has their perspective of a certain situation, and this is his perspective and truth. There is truth is what he says, but it goes further than that. IT was from Chicago, it was not just his nephew, it was the fact that he didn't play for the Bulls and was hated in his own town. On top of that the fact that Jordan was actually the face of his own town, made him boil inside.

    • @WillieDuitt1
      @WillieDuitt1 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Jordan had the competitive fire since youth, he would have never been 6 time champ until they got some talent around him, players like Gervin and Reggie Miller would have some rings if teammates were as talented as Bulls, Pistons, Celtics, and Lakers of that era. Early in Jordan's career he could score 40, 50, 60 and still didn't win. You must have a team.

      Isaiah Thomas’s reputation was tarnished league wide. His Dream Team exclusion cannot be ascribed to just one individual because he was loathed and consensually.
      It’s very simple: IT burned a lot of people around the league - it all culminated in his exclusion from the Dream Team.

      S B just because Isaiah and Michael aren’t friends doesn’t mean that Jordan forced Isaiah out of the dream team. • @Seroxm13
      @Seroxm13 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      S B your comment is fake news. Just because the GOAT hates Isiah and vice-versa, doesn't mean it was MJ that kept him out of the Dream Team. They hated each other, but also respected each other, for their basketball greatness and competitiveness. Anyway Isiah is Isiah (sometimes not even put in the top 3 or top 5 PGs of all time) and the GOAT is the GOAT (not just the greatest basketball player ever, but the greatest athlete of all time).

      A lot of John's stories have inconsistencies though. There are other interviews from players & even John Salley himself that contradict his statements. Micheal Jordan is ABSOLUTELY the SOLE REASON Isaiah wasn't on the Dream Team. Scottie Pippen stated Michael didn't want him. Michael was the biggest star in the world alongside Michael Jackson & Oprah in 1992 & the organizers of the Dream Team NEEDED him not Magic Bird or anyone else. Magic was upset & didn't want Isaiah, Michael was ultimately the deciding factor. This is a well known fact.

      What he left out was because of the way Doug Collins was coaching the team. They had to make the switch to Phil because Tex Winter was the orchestrator of the Triangle offense...Because he understood how to get the other player's involved instead of standing around watching one man try to beat an entire team. So Tex told Doug there's another way to play this game but Doug being a Super Fan of MJ didn't wanna hear it because he was to emotional. So they fired Doug plug in Phil and Tex Winter and they began to play real team basketball where everyone is involved Especially Horace Grant and John Paxson. Scottie started to develop as a #2 and that made them lethal, But keep in mind all they gave MJ was one ALL-STAR and he destroyed the NBA.

There is no doubt the Pistons and Celtics both had some great talent but they resorted to dirty play to win and the NBA allowed it to happen because it was good for ratings, Magic called the Cavs the team of the decade in the 80's but without an enforcer or dirty play they could never achieve this. bro...in 1990 he averaged 32, 1989 29 and in 1988 he averaged 27, they played him tough and whatnot but they didn’t shut him down. also the only people who gave them any comp in their championship years was the bulls in the conference finals, only loses in the playoffs they had in 89 was against the bulls, they had 4 loses in 1990 and 3 came from the bulls.

    John Stockton and Karl Malone being unable to win an NBA Title with the Utah Jazz was karma for John Stockton being selected to the 1992 Dream Team over Isiah Thomas.

    @Patrick Savage MJ's feelings can change. Anyone who's watched can see the divide has just grown. Also, Sally is pretty honest guy and not caught up in the POLITICAL FIRESTORM that caused the whole problem like MJ, Magic, etc. But back to MJ changing. He's clearly changed a TON since he was a young and his dad was alive. Watch his interviews from then. He was so humble, so kind. He acted like a person who had GREAT PARENTS. NOW.... he acts like someone who's been worshiped as a god.... what would you expect. No person can handle his level of adulation/sycophancy without becoming at least somewhat arrogant and out of touch. I actually think he's done a remarkable job at that despite his serious failings, when you consider the LEVEL of INSANE, and it really is INSANE ROCK STAR LOVE HE GETS. He's Elvis+TheBeetles+Muhammad Ali+.........in that specific 'seen as larger than life' way. I mean he's virtually a LIVING PR MODEL.

    All the fans overlooked one important person in the bar boys team. The hardest hit of the BY was the HC, Chuck! He implemented the tough nose d; he instructed his team to make each foul counts!!!

    John Salley is 100% right! Jordan and I. Thomas were just battling for the NBA title and they didn't really have anything against one another. Magic was the main guy who calls the shot. I. Thomas was at Jordan's hall of fame induction ceremony and he was very joyful and was clapping when they asked Jordan to go to the podium. John Salley and Dennis Rodman were originally from the Pistons and they both even played along with Michael Jordan in the Bulls organization. John Salley is no bullsh*t.

      MJ didn't have a problem with the Pistons... He had a problem with Isiah. In actuality, Magic and Isiah were competing for the crown, plus they had been close friends for years. Magic wasn't the guy the Pistons were beating up and beating in the playoffs, it was MJ. The tension grow stronger and stronger each year. Once the Bulls conquered them, MJ felt like the Pistons or at least Isiah who was the leader, would have enough respect to congratulate them seeing as the Pistons had beatin them the last 3 years. When Isiah walked by that Chicago bench before the buzzer sounded, ducked his head and didn't make eye contact, right then MJ lost all respect for him.. Unfortunately, the the Dream Team situation was perfect time for MJ to flex his muscle on Isiah. After the Bulls beat the Pistons, MJ and Magic met in the finals, then months later Magic announced he had HIV and that's when him and Isiah fell out. 6 to 7 months after that, the Dream Team was being assembled and by this time, Isiah was on everybody's shit list. MJ not wanting him to be on the team was the cake, Magic's disapproval was the icing. Idk why John Salley on here trying sway ppl away from facts they already know about the situation that came from the players themselves.
