    I did one on a 1966 GMC in the 1980s I used shim material to space the steering box to the chasis and used the same rod as you did to connect to the steering box.🎉🎉

    I am a little late on my project, but I am doing this exact same thing to my dad's old 64 C 10! I got a 78 and will be using the front end with disc brakes and power steering exactly like you did!! I feel like I need to send you some cash for all the good advice and videos!! You really Don't know how much I appreciate you!

    I converted my 66 to power steering some years ago. Being a cheapskate I welded up some homemade mounting brackets and threw on a refabbed K5 Blazer gear and other things. Been driving it all across the country that way!

    Remember the steering gear is bolted to the fame, the cab is not. Every time you hit a bump the intermediate shaft slider is designed to absorb the changes in the effective length of the steering shaft and column. Now, with a clamp, spring on the bottom of the column keeping the shift linkage tight against the column’s tube, it push on the bottom bearing and race. It should be removed, cleaned, greased and reinstall every 50 years. You are over due. The bearing looks like it came off a bicycle the not that cheap. Under normal circumstances all it does is to allow the steering shaft to rotate with some upward force on it. It will not take long before a noise transfers up the column an amplified by the tube, steering wheel and dash support. It is at this point you would to have shortened the center of the intermediate shaft, keep the slider, cleaned and recessed it with GM 12345879 Special Lubricant or follow the TSB for steering clunk. Many lines of vehicles experienced noise in this area and fixed with different springs, square sliders with dimples that hold the grease and even some with high density rubber bumpers added on the sides only in the middle.
    It a choice that could be done, but made more harder by welding. U-joint May have you mark a create a flat spot, drill a larger shallow hole, apply Loctite while others simple use grade 8 bolts with deformed nuts or nylock. They can be purchased at various locations from McMaster Carr to Speedway, the oldest speed shop in the US. Just thinking out loud Incase you choose to make a future change, correct a noise problem or just be able to service column after welding it. Certified automotive ASE Master Tech since 1978-Retired.

    Mr HC did you consider at one point in this mod of using the steering column out of the '78 as I'm planning on doing the same thing to my '64 GMC. Maybe you wanted to keep more of the stock '66 interior look. Any advice? Thanks!

    • @MrHevyshevy
      @MrHevyshevy  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I kept original because I like the original look. I did add collapsible shaft from newer column. Be easier to just use newer column probably.

      Thanks for responding. I agree I would prefer the original look of the old wheel and ignition on the dash and it is a four speed . Please check out my son and mine youtube channel and maybe subscribe! Thanks. God bless!

    The idiot I bought my 55 Chevy from switched the car to power steering. Does this kit come with the plates on the inside and out? From what I see he did not use any mounting plates so the column actually moves back and forth when I steer the car causing the hoses to work loose and leak. Can you tell me if the plates come with the kit and should he have used them? Thanks very much for any help. Also there are no nuts what so ever on the bolts so that is another problem.

      David Brown look for Captain Fab online. He'll pop up. He's got several brackets for this type of stuff. My power steering bracket is not from him. I think his is a little better.

Have the TH-cam powers decided that they won't put up the fact that you 'liked' a video? onelonleyfarmer is really pissed with them for saying that his channel was not appropriate since at times he publishes videos with Tim's arse crack showing. It just seems like they have lost their minds!
