    I had heard these were some of DJM's best work (i've heard the beatie well tanks stand up very well too, but all mixed feedback on the rest of their output) but this is a comeback i wasn't expecting, a shame they'll be disappearing from the market soon.
    it must be the photographic grey, between this and the garratt it's plain to see that a grey loco inherently makes it run better.

    • @SamsTrains
      @SamsTrains  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes this is much better than the DJM locos I've owned in the past! Yes it is a shame, but overall I can't say I'll miss those mechanisms!

    WOW!!!! That is SO MUCH more beautiful than the Heljan. I also love the working cross-head feed water pump on the right hand side of the locomotive. Also the color and details of the engine is beyond amazing. It's a shame DJM never really had a fair chance because this engine shows that they could have sold good locomotives. However it doesn't make any sense how DJM is out of business, and Heljan is still going. However, Heljan's saving grace from the looks of it is the Byer Garrat engine.

    I love your videos. On these tank engine reviews, I'd love to see some footage of the engine pulling a train backwards as well. My understanding is that tank engines can run in either direction equally well, and did so regularly. I think it just looks nice and realistic to see them run "backwards".

    Ever wondered why some were locomotives were painted Photographic Grey? :
    *Photographic grey, also known as works grey, was a paint scheme commonly applied to steam locomotives during the period before colour photography became commonplace. It was applied to allow sharper, more detailed images of the locomotive to be recorded.*

    Every year, on the date of her disappearance into the tunnel, she runs again as a warning to others. Her shrill whistle rings out in the dead of night, scaring Sam out of his wits.
    "Kelly, what are you talking about?" asked Sam perplexed.
    "The Ghost Saddle Tank Engine, of course," laughed Kelly, although she was shaking like a leaf. "Haven't you bought enough ghost steamies already?" Sam apologised and Kelly felt better. But not before the Ghost Saddle Tank Engine whistled loudly and made Scaredy-cat Sam jump a mile, that is.
    Aside from your chilling Ghost Steam Engine purchases, I'm batting my eyelashes at you. Come on, Sam. I'm still waaiiting for City of Truro to appear. Excuse my acting like Sonic the Hedgehog here, but I'm going to keep on saying it until you let City of Truro out of her box. It's not right to keep a lady locked up for this long. So let my beloved daughter out of her box, or you'll never hear the end of it. Get the picture?

    haha good to see this video, told you it was better! I don't actually believe Kernow are making a profit on this; in fact they say on their website that the reason why it's currently so cheap is because the price is a reaction to Heljan selling their model to retailers at a much lower price than RRP; Kernow felt they had to do the same to keep their model on the market.

    Most locos only had one side painted in photographic grey - the other would have either been in primer or standard livery! PS You really need the Oxford Publications 'A Pictorial History of Great Western Enginss' (two vols) in your library. Photographs of every GW design in various conditions, scale drawings too. An absolute essential for any GW modeller. As for valve gears, Lake & Reidinger's 'Valves and Valve Gears for Steam Locomotives' is essential reading.

    It's rather fascinating to see the differences in perspective vis-a-vis a good steam loco mechanism in OO and N. It might boil down to how delicate the parts are on an N steamer, but generally, you *want* it to be all wheel gear driven, you want it to use a split frame chassis rather than seperate pickups that inevitably get bent and stop working. Coreless motors...take 'em or leave 'em in N, though I will say they're prone to burning out down there. I have a Bachmann N USRA 4-6-0 that's burnt out two coreless motors because they can't handle the stress and overheat easily.

    • @SamsTrains
      @SamsTrains  4 ปีที่แล้ว

    HI Sam. As far as the handrail on the side of the saddle tank being lower on the Heljan model is concerned, I think it is because the Heljan rail is bent, making it appear to be lower than the DJM version., which is perfectly straight. If you match up the Heljan version against the DJM version, you will note that the short handrail coming off the smokebox matches the height of the long handrail along the side of the saddle tank. Therefore, in my opinion, it is the Heljan version that is at fault here. I don't know what model everybody was looking at.

    I really enjoyed the review of this loco. It's not a great loco my no means but I have said before that any loco better than the Helijan one is an instant winner for me, I even said that the Helijan Tango holds a candle over the Helijan 1361. So the way I see it, I genuinely wouldn't mind getting this loco, sure it has flaws and a questionable price (not good or bad, just questionable), but it leaps over the Helijan model tenfold. It's not a great loco, but it's a win for me. Thanks for another great review Sam, really enjoyed this one.

    Cutting out on points is yesterday's news, many people these days use live frogs. I use Trix C-track, everything is live, no dead spots or shorts anywhere no matter how you join it up.

    Sam, there is nothing wrong with split frame and using bearings for pick up if will designed. At least the bearings will last longer (if lubricated) than wiper pickups which can wear out much quicker. I agree with your view about the gears to each wheel. It does not improve low speed running and is just an extra cost to make. You can always remove the unnecessary gears. Core less motors are great if you use filtered DC. They don't like pulse controllers, hence the poor jerky low speed crawl on your set up. Some of the more expensive DCC decoders are capable of running core less motors smoothly at low speeds.

    • @SamsTrains
      @SamsTrains  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Terry - yes that's true, though a design like this introduces other issues, such as lack of accessibility and serviceability. Of course regular lubricants won't work either (as they insulate), so a conductive one is required; inconvenient. The plastic spacer between axles is always a point of weakness - even on modern Dapol examples, the I often find the back to back going astray over time! Removing the gears is a great idea, though I wouldn't dare do it with these; the coupling rods are very thin and flimsy, not designed for transmission unfortunately :(
      Thanks for watching, Sam :)

    • @terryflynn8830
      @terryflynn8830 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@SamsTrains Most of my models are H0 and use bearings for pickups (old brass steam outline and typical diesel mechanisms following old Athern style bearing pickup construction) Even though in theory oil is an insulator, in practice light oils like transmission oil or Inox actually improves electrical conductivity. I use Inox for general lubrication and keeping wheels and track conductive. See this Aussie rant @ th-cam.com/video/1r2L8NSxOnQ/w-d-xo.html If wheels are going out of gauge on Dapol split frame models, then these models will fail and should be avoided, I believe you agree, as loose axles will be prone to also go out of quarter causing all sorts of failures. Loose axles are often a sign of a split collar and gear. It's why most manufacturers avoid split frame construction for steam locomotives. Cheers.

    Hi Sam,
    The value, @ £69, is pretty good, certainly better than 2.5 stars. What can you buy for £69 that’s better value? Not many locos... maybe a Hornby Class 66? A bit sad you finally get a good model from a manufacturer and they have just gone out of business. I bought some fantastic Vitrains Class 37’s and they are no longer around either! They were about £70 from eBay, and they are great value/quality.

    Also to note I have tried the slow crawl with my vintage kit built mantua 3 pole Pacific since I only ran a little bit previously it didn't really but I ran it Sunday since I cleaned it beforehand and lubricated it before putting it away she did run beautifully and it did a crawl i was shocked. Mind you when I bought it at a trainshow in January it never was broken in at all.

    I don't get some why you don't switch to Peco track as as it is far more reliable as well as the electrofrog points will work on DC out of the Pack as I've been using them for N gauge in either case with its pico or any other brand best thing to do is to always wire up power to the fog based on the direction of travel that you're willing to go or get a polarity switch you can get manual or digital which will prevent cutting out on the Frog entirely

    I must say, I purchased a Heljan 1366 class (1369 to be precise) , even despite the review on the 1361 class , which is obviously very similar. I purchased it, only because it runs on the South Devon railway.
    I must say, I would say it beats both of the 1361 classes. I went over mine, and couldn't find any faults/seam lines anywhere on the model.
    The couplings still droop, and larger points are still a pain. (Judder or stop at any accurate speed) and the 9 screws need to be done correctly, which is stupid
    However, I feel with a stay alive fitted, it is actually a really good model. I like a loco to run quietly, unless fitted with sound, and from this video, that DJM was making a right noise!
    Just my opinion, but while they are still on offer , I would try a 1366 class. Would be interesting to see how it gets on in someone else's eyes.

    Took your advise and ordered one. Only took two days to get it from England to the Netherlands. Holding it even reveals more detail than your review. A real shame that DJM will not be able to produce more of these gems. Looking at the connecting bar between the wheels it realy looks to scale. But that makes it also very flimsy. Probably the reason for the overengineerd running gear as the bars would sertainlt give way if the would get loaded by one of the axis getting stuck. Thanks for the review. Shame I couldn't credit you at Kernows'website.

    28:00 This is one of the oldest tricks in the "marketing" book. Manufacturers commonly offer inflated MSRPs so that retailers can offer big "discounts" and yet everyone still makes a profit. Thanks Sam for another great impartial review of what i think is a quite a nice little model.. With regard to the price reduction whilst watching your review I went onto Kernows website and the answer is there. It seems they are now indeed making a loss on each one sold but the decision was taken as another manufacturer had heavily discounted the competition.. Out of the discounted price they still also give a £5.00 donation to the 1361 restoration group. You can check it out on the Kernow GWR 1361 info page.

    • @SamsTrains
      @SamsTrains  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Chris! Yes I read that too - it does say that the reduction has caused them to "lose money" (naturally), but it didn't say that they were selling at a loss, and there is a difference! They may well be selling them at a loss, but that isn't what the post said. I do applaud them in reducing the price though - it's allowed a lovely model to find its way into the hands of those unable to spend well over £100 on something like this!

    I really like the shape of this loco and am actually tempted to put it on my wish list, which would be the first for a tank engine. The price is vey reasonable, but I found that your Hattons affiliate link listed them as about GBP 125. However, I did manage to find cheaper ones at the Kernow models site.
    The only thing is that I don't like fine details that break off easily. If there is an older, second hand version of this engine at a lower price, I would definitely consider buying it.

    Since DJM has gone into receivership, they might be liquidating their stock through dealers at a fraction of the cost. Kinda like a store closing sale. When AHM went out in the 1980's, everything was sold dirt cheap to pay off investors as quickly as possible.

      Thanks for the comment Chrispy! Consider the Oxford N7 loco though; it's much bigger, is largely die-cast, has a similar amount of detail and performs much better due to it's superior mechanism! This costs £20 more than that! Similar story with the Hornby Terrier, which is £25 cheaper than this! There's no doubt in my mind that they'd be doing very well indeed at the RRP. It's a shame the market has been flooded with the inferior Heljan model though - but at least it's brought about decent prices for once!

    Some time back I bought Heljan's Bayer Garret from Hattons.. Was not very pleased with the quality of Heljan. Certainly Heljan is way behind Brawa, Trix, Rapido etc.

      Yeah, I'm not too happy with the quality of the Garratts either - latest release was much better, but still left a lot to be desired! :/
      Thanks for watching, Sam :)

    Do you have any recommendations for a 00 gauge loco that runs well over points and has a good slow speed ;D

      That's okay Bee - most of the modern Hornby locos do - particularly tender engines! :D

    29:50 Do I see Bullman behind the train of the DJM 1361 Class? :O
    I can barely see anything at the rear since it's pretty blurry.
