Heljan took Sam's review of the LNER tango, scrutinized over it. Thought long and hard and eventually, after long long hours of sweat and determination they achieved what nobody else thought possible. Some called them crazy but they did it. No longer would they listen to the LNER tango being acclaimed as the worst loco ever being produced by a questionable company. They saw the challenge, starred it straight in the eye and said, we can do worse.
“Alan the Heljan, was a showoff.” “He was a lazy bum, who never pulled his weight on this railway.” “He rode roughly and constantly stopped, to prevent taking trains he didn’t want to take.” “One day, manager told him he was going to make him useful at last.” “What did the manager do with him?” “He partly dismantled him, taking away his wheels and removing his motor. Honestly, this would be a great loco to weather. A bit of dirt and rust would hide and/or compliment some of its blemishes quite well. You could even do it up as an engine that's being sent for scrap. Then put in another consist like its being pulled, that would hide how fast this loco needs to go to not die on points.

Just this past week I added a Heljan 1361 Class to my model RR. I am located in the Fox River Valley, Wisconsin, USA, and bought my 1304 GWR 0-6-0ST, no. 1363 in BR Black from 'Rails of Sheffield'. (99 quid). My engine is quite different from your review. Parts fitting and paint was pristine and flawless. It is a good and quiet runner. I added DCC and sound with a Zimo MX648F Sound decoder. Works wonderful with all sounds and a super slow crawl (there is a function to run the engine at 1/2 speed). I would rate this engine 8.5-8.8 range.

Allan Straight Link Valve Gear is basically a combination of Stephenson and Gooch, though the expansion link is not curved like Stephenson, hence "Straight Link". To reduce cutoff or change the engine's direction, not only the position of said link is raised or lowered (a la Stephenson), but also the valve rod which now becomes a quasi-radius rod of sorts (like Gooch or Walschaerts). This is accomplished by dual lifting links that are attached to a "Double Bell Crank" which sort of resembles a see-saw. When the link goes up, the radius rod goes down, and vice versa.
Yknow, you have a funny sense of humour. Especially when irritated, it seems "You win some, or you lose some. And some, you throw down the stairs" had me literally LOL
I'm having such a hard time thinking that professionals tested this model and decided it was ready for release. This is hurting my brain just as much as thinking that producers could have okayed the final takes for Metallica's "Lulu" I was expecting it to burst into flames as it was running
Thank god for the DJM 1361 (not something you would expect to hear). When you said that you apologized if your tone was obnoxious I was dying of laughter, as to be quite honest the quality of the model is the most obnoxious thing I’ve ever seen in my life! I would not touch this thing with a thirty-nine and a half foot pole, and I can’t believe that you did not return this for a refund. I’ve seen bad models in my life, but nothing as horrid as this. Thank goodness Heljan have been starting to learn from their mistakes, (ie: GWR Railcar, ES-1 Electric, etc.) But with lemons like this model, the Class 17 and the Tango, I wonder some days how Heljan stay in business. Great review Sam, and keep up the good work!
And the doubleheader with the steam sentinel and J 94 is pulling ocean wagons, mail coaches, some ventilated Vans, egg vans, and all the tankers you have. The B12 and 4Mt pulling Pullman and tieks coaches along with LMS and Caledonian railway coaches.
Wow. Those rear windows are killing me. I thought maybe they were supposed to be some sort of corrugated glass/plastic but looking up pictures of the real loco (and much better scratch builds and kit builds other modelers have made) shows Heljan was trying to simulate metal bars across the windows! Definitely unacceptable for a model that costs over $200 USD, even if it is just a small engine. Also, that middle axle looks bent since one of the wheels clearly wobbles when you were running it upside down.
And the 4f and Midland compound pulling cattle vans, the TTS sound van, the long ventilated vans, removable top Vans, flatbeds along with cargo inside all of the trucks
Hi Sam, I have the pannier tank version of this one, with the same mechanism. I discovered as you did that the baseplates have no "give" at all. I inserted thin plastic film so I could tighten the screws. But then I discovered that one of the front screws is not in the correct place, and when inserted, causes the baseplate to twist. One has to widen the hole in the baseplate for that screw so it doesn't get twisted, as that jams the mechanism even if it feels OK. After fixing that and very carefully adjusting each power pickup, it became a good runner with lots of hauling power. The coupling mountings are the correct height, but with so much slack that the coupling dangles, and then to make matters worse the coupling 'stalk' has a downstep in it! The coupling passes entirely below a correctly fitted coupling on another vehicle. You have to put in quite a bit of effort to remove all slack and then replace the bit of tat they call a coupling with a proper one. After all that, it works well. But it should have done that out of the box. And mine at least has wonderful sound - smooth and high quality. I get the feeling they have wonderful modellers making the basic visual design, but slovenly, incompetent implementation and production. When the first prototype came out, they should have fixed the baseplates and couplings before ordering mass production.
That sounds like a good fix - great idea there, shame it's necessary though! I'd agree with that whole heartedly - the implementation was a joke!! Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Mine arrived today and there is nothing wrong with it...at £80 from Rails I think it's a good buy. Maybe quality control has been stepped up following your review, but I'm happy with this black e/e version.
Wow. But not a good wow but a shocking wow. Was considering getting one of these, glad I didn’t. An opportunity missed I’d say. I’m still hopeful heljan can produce a top quality model but it’s becoming harder to justify them. A Hornby 0-6-0 peckett would be a much better purchase and it’s cheaper! A great review Sam and keep up the great content. Clint

Fun fact: Percy's design from The Railway Series books does not resemble any real locomotive but he was originally supposed to be based on a GWR 1361 look-alike. In the end, he was based on a GWR no.1340 Trojan as the Rev Awdry wanted him to be from the very start. The Reverend stated that Percy probably begun as one of these saddle tank engines and was extensively rebuilt which is why he doesn't resemble any real loco design. His TV show model ended up being based on the GWR 1361
22:22 Sam I think I found the problem the coupling of the loco is lower which it's in the wrong height 19 making it more harder to couple up to other locos and rolling stock
Sounds a bit like the current situation with Thomas & Friends merchandise. (Excluding brands like Bachmann) The quality of Thomas merchandise has been abysmal as of the last 5 years and it’s been getting a lot more expensive.
Heljan could have saved themselves a lot if money if they had bought a few hours of your time to have a look at the design before production. I'm really glad that you take a look at the technical side in your reviews.
I think it's an insult to Heljan to suggest that I have the ability to spot these issues and they don't! I can't believe they'd consider (at least my example) acceptable, but I'm waiting to hear from them! Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Thanks very much Gregory - I truly believe that this was disgraceful, but definitely make up your own mind based on the close ups! Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Enjoyable, refreshing review. Loved your use of our beautiful language, calling a spade a spade. One less Christmas card this year? For the same price, better off with a Hatton Class 66, of which I have six on pre-order.
It's so cute! The Allan valve gear looks a lot like Stephensons. It was very common on NS tank engines. On the 7700 and the 6500 classes, you can clearly see it. Examples are 7742 Bello and 6513, both at the Stoomtram Hoorn-Medemblik.
This was probabaly the most british panning of a model I've ever seen. The only possible thing you DIDNT say about this (alleged) scale model was *I intend on writing a letter to the Times on this subject!* Very very good Sam sir!
don't get me wrong I like this engine however the way Heljan have put this and assembled it together and for the most ridiculous price THEY MUST BE TAKING THE BISCUIT!!! I agree with you Sam, good thing you released this video because I was considering buying one myself since Hattons had it down to £99
Great video again Sam. I do wonder if manufacturers actually watch these reviews. They seem to think that they can get away with offering terrible models at an astronomical price! These type of reviews have saved people a fortune I reckon.
Thanks Stephen - I hope Heljan watch these reviews - they might change their ways! That's the only reason I continue to buy them - to help spread the word, good or bad! Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Sam. Re:- My previous comments on the 1361. I was looking at them on the "Rails of Sheffield" website. They were selling them for £79:50p and I particularly like the 1370, Pannier Tank version so I chanced it and ordered one. It came today and it is perfect. No damage or glue marks and it creeps along very slowly straight out of the box, tested on my short straight test track. The sprung buffers work perfectly as well. I just thought you might be interested to hear of this. Sorry if it depresses you lol. Regards, Alan.

This model really puts the Hell in Heljan. I'm amazed you didn't throw it across the room to be honest. Perhaps that can be your next experiment video - Can a Tank Engine Fly? Whoops it fell and broke oh dear never mind moving on.. Great review though Sam :)
I bought a Bachmann 3F 0-6-0 tender locomotive for nearly £64 from Kernow recently. I know that Bachmann have been raising their prices a lot since the 3F came out, but the difference in value for money is astounding. The locomotive that I bought before that was a new tooling Hornby Terrier, which isn't perfect, but seems a lot better than your Helijan 1361, as well (as you mentioned) as being noticeably cheaper.
removed heljan from my buying lists but what is amazing about that little wart of an engine is none of the detail fell off when you handled it unlike the diesels range
Technically, for Sam, DJM is worse. He has now had three steamers from both companys. Let's add the scores up: Heljan: 02 = 5.39 Garrett = 7.45 1361 = 4.67 DJM: Beattie Well Tank = 0.00 J94 = 5.65 1361 = 6.75 Totals: Heljan = 17.51 DJM = 12.40
I fully agree. Mine was just as bad. I got mine a couple of years ago and the body was covered in scratches and marks. And to access the motor you have to bend the water tank around the sides of the weight.

Duly noted mate, thanks very much for the info!
Cheers,
Sam :)
My two brand new hornby 0-6-0s have failed after 3 months, it'd be interesting to see how long these go for!

I'm having such a hard time thinking that professionals tested this model and decided it was ready for release.
This is hurting my brain just as much as thinking that producers could have okayed the final takes for Metallica's "Lulu"
I was expecting it to burst into flames as it was running
I know right - it's crazy isn't it?! Hopefully this video will help to raise awareness!

@@SamsTrains Are you going to return it?
"who designed this?"
Apple maybe?
haha - an apple-designed loco would be awesome! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
If Apple designed a loco it would be expensive but pretty good I’d think. Bachmann + Apple collaboration?
Ah yes. And £999.99 extra couplings...
@Laquelectro and they would end up making it accidentally look like a cheese grater.
@Laquelectro Available in O, OO and N.
Great idea - I'd love that!! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Ooh really?! That's awful then, what were they thinking?! :O
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
And the 4f and Midland compound pulling cattle vans, the TTS sound van, the long ventilated vans, removable top Vans, flatbeds along with cargo inside all of the trucks
Good one mate!! :D

Sam you must be the national archiver historian of model trains by now! 🤣
haha thank you - I don't know about that! ;D
Clint
Thanks Clint - yes I wouldn't recommend these to you! The Peckett is a far better purchase, by far!

That's very interesting - thanks a lot for sharing this! :D

150 quid for that. XD
I know!! Though that's the RRP mind you! ;D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Meanwhile, I just payed $70 USD for a C&O H6 (2-6-6-2), with sound. This thing is massively over priced
22:22 Sam I think I found the problem the coupling of the loco is lower which it's in the wrong height 19 making it more harder to couple up to other locos and rolling stock
Heljan honestly seems like a scam at the moment, trying to sell as a high class (and price) model, but giving toy quality. Just an unfunny joke.
haha they're definitely bordering on that territory - I genuinely thought I was buying a quality model with that RRP!
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Sounds a bit like the current situation with Thomas & Friends merchandise. (Excluding brands like Bachmann) The quality of Thomas merchandise has been abysmal as of the last 5 years and it’s been getting a lot more expensive.
Like Bachmann overcharge but at least there is a good model at the end of their work. With Heljan, you get either a garratt or a tango/1361
Their non-steam stuff is decent though.
@@internetguy7965 true but that is no excuse for their steam stuff
Heljan could have saved themselves a lot if money if they had bought a few hours of your time to have a look at the design before production. I'm really glad that you take a look at the technical side in your reviews.
I think it's an insult to Heljan to suggest that I have the ability to spot these issues and they don't! I can't believe they'd consider (at least my example) acceptable, but I'm waiting to hear from them!
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
That price for... That? Boy, has April Fools come early this year...

Send it back but instead of returning the loco, just take a crap in the box and see if they notice the difference 🤣
haha - if I did that, they'd claim there was nothing wrong with the model, and wonder why I'd returned it!

I have always found your assessment of locos fair and reasonable, so I`m guessing this one is abysmal. Cheers Greg

Enjoyable, refreshing review. Loved your use of our beautiful language, calling a spade a spade. One less Christmas card this year? For the same price, better off with a Hatton Class 66, of which I have six on pre-order.

Can it survive 20 hits from a sledge hammer?
That's a very good question.
8:26 actually the baracaldo was that price and even that didnt have that
haha you're right!! ;D
Yes but which one is more of a RIP off: this of the railcar
1361 vs GWR diesel railcar
It’s like giving us the blue and black dress question 😂
I would say this. They are the same price but the railcar is bigger and is a better model
The Retro Crowe that’s fair, but the lack of internal detail does balance it out in my opinion.
At least the railcar looked decent (mostly) - so this is the biggest rip off to me!
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
It's so cute!
The Allan valve gear looks a lot like Stephensons. It was very common on NS tank engines. On the 7700 and the 6500 classes, you can clearly see it. Examples are 7742 Bello and 6513, both at the Stoomtram Hoorn-Medemblik.

Blimey £64 for the 3F is excellent indeed - way better than this!!

removed heljan from my buying lists but what is amazing about that little wart of an engine is none of the detail fell off when you handled it unlike the diesels range
Technically, for Sam, DJM is worse. He has now had three steamers from both companys. Let's add the scores up:
Heljan:
02 = 5.39
Garrett = 7.45
1361 = 4.67
DJM:
Beattie Well Tank = 0.00
J94 = 5.65
1361 = 6.75
Totals:
Heljan = 17.51
DJM = 12.40
haha yeah overall I'd say DJM are worse than Heljan! In different areas though!

I fully agree. Mine was just as bad. I got mine a couple of years ago and the body was covered in scratches and marks. And to access the motor you have to bend the water tank around the sides of the weight.
