Sir Tom is a true gentleman. He bought me a drink on my 40th birthday in Victoria BC. His son his manager & he were at the restaurant me & my girlfriend were celebrating my birthday at. She tried to buy them a drink, but they bought one for us instead. Then we all said "good night, nice sharing the Waterclub restaurant with you" . Cool guy!
Tom has confessed that this was the music he truly loved. Like Elvis, he sold out and recorded pop trash to get on the charts, but Tom's first love was clearly gospel and R & B soul music. Thanks for posting this gem.
When you don't have anything respectful to write then don't write anything at all, you were not raised right, and today there are artists who collaborate with other singers from different genres that does not mean they sold their soul to the devil, it just means they want to unite the world, and bring people together. Till they got to the bar! I just read this in Tom's book. Tom complimented Pickett's solo and WP was dismissive. He implied that he'd toned the number down and he'd sold himself out by appearing on Tom's show! Then it got worse. I won't repeat what Tom said Pickett had said--but it was racial, ugly and very sad. Still--gotta love these rock and roll biographies, so interesting and historical.

Wilson Pickett was being an ass plain and simple. Tom Jones had nothing but LOVE For black artists and ALWAYS gave them the recognition openly that he felt they deserved. Just when you thought something like this might never exist, Tom Jones and Wilson Pickett sing "Hey Jude", and you thank whatever you might speak up to, that you were able to exist in the same time as this music. Powerful and maybe the only two people who could produce a version that dwarfs the Beatles
It is always amazing to watch talented people like this do what they were born to do. That was the best version of Hey Jude I have ever heard. They actualy made an iconic beatles song better...live...on stage...at the end of a medley...that's insane!

Actually Tom Jones says Wilson Pickett was very rude to him after the show when they spoke, telling Tom "that was an excuse for rhythm and blues", and he also told Tom "before long we are not going to need you, We'll have our own tv shows. Very talented singer yet quite ungrateful , Jones gave him lot's of exposure and that's the thanks he got.
This certainly proves that soul has no colour. i wish they had tv like this again. This is why we use to enjoy sitting around with family and watching the television. talent like this .no bad language,or provocative dancing, just pure entertainment.

What a pity this show was cancelled! I thought that Sir Tom was the best show host ever the way he blended in with all the celebrity singers! I remember watching him as a teenager with my parents and four siblings! We really loved the show! Brought so much joy into our family living room during the troublesome times during the Vietnam War! Shame the other two networks had to ruin it for Sir Tome Jones.
My parents are huge fans of Tom Jones so I've seen him in Vegas 7 times as a kid growing up. He truly gives it his all each and every time he's on stage. The man is amazing!!
One thing I love about Tom's duets with other great artists, is that because he is so great and doesn't hold back, he pushes his partners to up their game and give it their best. The result is almost invariably magical.
I know exactly what you mean. He always supports his guests, lets them take the lead, then pushes them to their limits. He puts the music before his ego. Watch how he always watches the artist to follow their lead, and then takes it to the next level when it's his turn. Not all singers can or will do that.
I have gone speechless, how is it possible that these two people belong to mankind as I think I do? My whole being caressed and shaken in a-stand-in-applause-forever-performance.
You can just see how much TJ is in heaven being able to sing with him - and so many of the other R&B/soul singers he had on as guests (which he had to fight for with the Network) - Look at how he is smiling. Man loves what he does, does it well and so much respects these amazing artists he was able to perform with - pure joy.
Not sure Tom Jones got critical acclaim for how great he was. Think he was labeled as commercial. Wilson Pickett is deservedly a legend. Which makes this an excellent video to be thoroughly enjoyed.

I remember a newspaper article from around 50 years ago, that was about an 80 year old in an eastern European country like Bulgaria or Romania, who had been caught shoplifting a vinyl record of Tom's. She said she couldnt help it, that Tom's voice and singing sent shivers of ecstasy thru her old bones...
It is my understanding that Wilson Pickett was Tom Jones' idol and inspiration. That makes this a very special moment in the careers of both men.

Imagine if this was someone's Doctoral thesis..I would bring in a post-it-note with this sentence and the link to the performance slam it on the professor's desk, then...drop the mic (yes, I brought a mic w/me for just this purpose. Pickett and Little Richard did that in their duets with Sir Tom. Black artists don't give that ultimate sign of respect for no reason unless they mean it. With Jones they definitely meant it when they uttered the words, " Sing the song son/ sir".

Wilson Pickett was a great music soul singer died at the age of 64. Tom Jones had a great enthusiastic show which I watch regularly.
And you can tell that they both enjoy performing together, soo much talent; pure joy! Love them!

Actually Tom Jones says Wilson Pickett was very rude to him after the show when they spoke, telling Tom "that was an excuse for rhythm and blues", and he also told Tom "before long we are not going to need you, We'll have our own tv shows. Very talented singer yet quite ungrateful , Jones gave him lot's of exposure and that's the thanks he got.
This certainly proves that soul has no colour. i wish they had tv like this again. This is why we use to enjoy sitting around with family and watching the television. talent like this .no bad language,or provocative dancing, just pure entertainment.

What a pity this show was cancelled! I thought that Sir Tom was the best show host ever the way he blended in with all the celebrity singers! I remember watching him as a teenager with my parents and four siblings! We really loved the show! Brought so much joy into our family living room during the troublesome times during the Vietnam War! Shame the other two networks had to ruin it for Sir Tome Jones.

My parents are huge fans of Tom Jones so I've seen him in Vegas 7 times as a kid growing up. He truly gives it his all each and every time he's on stage. The man is amazing!!

One thing I love about Tom's duets with other great artists, is that because he is so great and doesn't hold back, he pushes his partners to up their game and give it their best. The result is almost invariably magical.
I know exactly what you mean. He always supports his guests, lets them take the lead, then pushes them to their limits. He puts the music before his ego. Watch how he always watches the artist to follow their lead, and then takes it to the next level when it's his turn. Not all singers can or will do that.
I have gone speechless, how is it possible that these two people belong to mankind as I think I do? My whole being caressed and shaken in a-stand-in-applause-forever-performance.

Tom Jones, nothing to envy from any singer. Great voice it just flows naturally. With any singer, any genre, the best of the best, even to this day!
You can just see how much TJ is in heaven being able to sing with him - and so many of the other R&B/soul singers he had on as guests (which he had to fight for with the Network) - Look at how he is smiling. Man loves what he does, does it well and so much respects these amazing artists he was able to perform with - pure joy.
Not sure Tom Jones got critical acclaim for how great he was. Think he was labeled as commercial. Wilson Pickett is deservedly a legend. Which makes this an excellent video to be thoroughly enjoyed.

Holy cow…this IS Soul! Both of them have their melodic screams down to a science and both of their voices are rich, full throated and unmistakable. I’ve never seen this tv clip before. It’s so gratifying, given today’s music, to witness two TRUE talents both playing off the other…and lettin’ it all hang out! It simply doesn’t get any better than this.

It's interesting to see that the more amped up Pickett gets, Jones gets more into it and starts yelling a little louder too. You could be buried in ice and thaw out instantly with Pickett's enthusiasm.

I remember a newspaper article from around 50 years ago, that was about an 80 year old in an eastern European country like Bulgaria or Romania, who had been caught shoplifting a vinyl record of Tom's. She said she couldnt help it, that Tom's voice and singing sent shivers of ecstasy thru her old bones...
