Acer’s Helios 300 was one of the best gaming laptops last year, but they’ve already redesigned it wth the newer Helios Neo 16 and made it worse in some ways..

Does the Acer Helios Neo 16 have a battery conservation option like Lenovo's laptop ? My Lenovo Legion 5P is nearing 3 years of usage and the total battery capacity has only been reduced by 2% out of 80Wh.
edit: Acer does have battery conservation through Acer's Care Center software which stops battery from charging when reaching 80% capacity.
Legion 5 pro 2023 review when?
Hello! Newb question - can you keep it plugged it while playing for a few hours? Or do you need to unplug when full, then plug in again?
"Instead of having useful port icons on the back, Acer have instead chosen to spell out Predator in morse code"
I like how Jarrod says it in a monotonous manner🤣
6:15 Imagine turning on this laptop at 2AM and you forgot to turn of the boot sound before
Been waiting for this review since Acer annouced Neo 16 and 18. Thanks Jarrod for your efforts!
Im happy with my accer predator and just as happy that your rocking a In Flames shirt!!! I met them at Ozzfest in 2004 in Indianapolis. Super cool dudes.
Got a Helios 300 with RTX 3060 graphics for $999 on sale from Best Buy, and I've been enjoying it for the past few days now ever since I got it! I'm glad that I saw your video on last years Helios 300!
with what processor?
12700h I think@@aadityarohit3331
I was looking between a few different laptops and seen a comment recommending this one, I look it up and it’s on sale for $1090 until tomorrow, $500 off and I’m literally about to go pick it up now! Curious to see the difference coming from a 60 fps capable ps4 and a 720p smart tv 😂
Acer Predator Helios Neo 16 PHN16-71 i5 13500HX with 4050 6Gb vram is this a good option in 2024
Can you give a review how are the thermals?
There is an option to change profile when removing charger. In profile there are setting for changing Modes and refresh rate etc. Between the Modes and profiles, it can get a bit confusing.
Hey, Jarrod! I have a quick question: would an SSD M2 WD Black SN850X with the heatsink fit in my Predator Helios 300 (2022 version) or should I buy the model without heatsink? Your reviews are always so helpful, thanks! :)
I got the 3070ti helios 300 thanks to you and it is a beast man. Thank you for helping me dodge the 3060 Slim i7. You're the man for this one. By the way the fan does NOT get that bad.
Why dodge the Lenovo Slim?
@@nikolayrogchev9628 Probably because the Slim 7i has a lower GPU power limit at only 100W.
@@Carman670 the one at bestbuy had a 3060 vs the 3070ti, 1080 res vs 1440, soldered ram (24 in lenovo vs up to 64 in Acer) and was about 300.00 more.
I have the 3060 slim 7i. But I paid only $1200 for it when it first came out. Great laptop for portability, but 3070ti is much more power.
Does ur acer dont any have issues
Thanks for another great review, Jarrod. Was waiting so much for it!
Happy with my Acer helios 300 2022, bought it early this year thanks to your recommendation. And weird that it already has a successor.
Have you experienced thermal problems?
Man i was at best buy picking up my Helios 300 and some poor familly was picking up the TUF with 8 gigs 3050ti for "college and gaming" tried HARD dropping hints that that wasnt it but to no avail. Shame really.
Acer with their Nitro 16 7840HS + 4060 and Asus TUF F15 with 12700H + 4060 really surprised with some budget pricing right out of the gates! The efficiency advantage of the 40 series may be handy for people living in warmer climates along with Frame Gen.
Also not all full power 3070Ti laptops are equally fast, as the 3070Ti is very power dependent and there is like a 5% difference between various laptops (like comparing a 3070Ti Omen against a 3070Ti Legion).
Agree bro but I'm so mad nobody made any review about asus tuf f15 4060 i7 12 gen variant

Long awaited review . Wouldn’t buy my laptop without your review
This is a really nice machine. bought this last week and love it. nice temps and performance. I actually ended up getting the 4050/i5 model which i was also very impressed with.
what are you playing?
Is the fan noise is very annoying??
@@md.sabbir4101 it can get loud if on max but otherwise in normal auto mode it was pretty quiet imo.
@@mattswindler2527bro please tell me if should I go with asus f-15 Or lenovo legion pro-5 Or acer predator helios neo-16?
@@niazahmed9535 gaming laptops aren’t always about specs keep that in mind is my advice. F15 has a really cheap feeling chassis. Performs fine tho. Legion is nice, haven’t used a Lenovo in awhile tho. Acer has a nice cooler and an impressive chassis for its price.
Holy been waiting for this video for too long lol, glad u did it
Thank you very much for all this information. Regarding adding a second nvme, do you know if there is room to install one with a heatsink, such as the Seagate FireCuda 530 ? Or must I get one without a heatsink?
Thanks man.
Hoping to see the review of the much more interesting regular Helios 16 soon 🤞
Hopefully!
I think it would be great if Jarrod could manage to get the new Lenovo Yoga Pro 9i which comes in 14" and 16" and to do an in-depth review of such an interesting device 🙌🏻
I’m curious in 6:55, what caused the frame rate to drop down drastically during the test. I’m not a tech savvy so i was wonder if it was a hardware or software issue.
Love your in depth laptop reviews! I got one request can you please do an review of acer's predator helios 16 with rtx 4080 variant.
Will get this laptop.. Strangely enough here with the same specs, it just priced around USD1360 when converted wheres the Helios 300 is still cost more around USD1820.. Anyways keep up the good work Jarod!
I just got the Legion 5 82RB00AGMJ, with the current local lenovo TnG deal. There is the i7 model 82RB00AHMJ. I feel like it's a really good deal and the performance shouldn't be that different, but it is last gen with only 6GB of VRAM.
This was the unit I have choose for a replacement of my old laptop which was the horrible 2021 model it was having issues with heating and the board always gets fried even tho its a new board and the shop said they don't have that old model on stock so they made me choose to replace the old model with a new one and I found the new model with the best cooling so far and just added a small amount for a new laptop I'm glad that I have a new replacement and it was the new model of helios 300 and this video really helped me to choose what unit to get for a replacement of my old helios 300
May I ask what your pick is for a dual-boot Windows/Linux system?
For example, Lenovo is pretty good and supports many features in the boot, and hotkeys are working fine, including coolers mode. At the same time, on the Asus series, I had some problems with bios (each time I switched systems, the time was messed up), and some hotkeys, including cooler modes, didn't work.
What alternatives to Lenovo laptops exist?
I think for the SSD write speed is a windows 11 problem, as my SSD used to get about 4Gb/s write, now I'm getting only 800mb/s after the latest windows update.
(My SSD used space is less than 50% )
The RGB light bar and RGB per key keyboard is now present on more premium Predator 16 and 18
Hello Jarrod, I love your videos man! It's been helping me quite a lot on researching to buy a decent gaming laptop under a certain amount of budget and I have selected two models which I've liked the most.
They are "Acer Predator Helios Neo 16 PHN16 | 2023 Model | 16.0 inch WUXGA Display 165Hz Gaming Laptop ( i5-13500HX, 16GB, 512GB SSD, RTX 4050 6GB (Max TDP-140), W11 )" and "Gigabyte G5 KE | 2022 Model | 15.6″ FHD 144Hz Display Laptop ( i5-12500H, 8GB, 512GB SSD, RTX3060 6GB (Max TDP- 115W), W11 )".
Can you please help me out on selecting the best suited one considering overall bases (e.g. Performance, Monitor, Thermal Management, Build quality, longevity)?
great review!!! loving the work but I was not expecting Neo to be the replacement for the Helios 300. I assumed Helio16/18 the replacement for the 300, right??
Nice and thorough review J, appreciated! Your crystaldiskmark write results seem a little off though, i'm getting 5400/3000/900/332-ish in write tests. Do you happen to know the wattage of USB-PD in this device?
The price of this year's Helios is absolutely justified. Its performance is finally matching MSI's Titan... in terms of decibels, that is... :D
lol need a new graph, decibels per dollar
As for repasting, once you need to repaste the GPU, do you need to replace the liquid metal in the CPU as well?
I have the same version as in review bought it May 2023. Its a very good purchase. Loved it ❤
Great 👍
Question: Do i always have to adjust the Laptops powersetting using the button or acer predator? cant i use all of the hardwares ressources staying in normal mode? why doenst the gaming laptop adjust the power by itsself depending on the demand? I dont always want to activate Dyson V12 Turbo mode when i play a game and play around with the mode button...
I do find this interesting. I disabled 8 E cores on my GT77 and did a slight undervolt in bios (-0.50, I was scared lol). Basically all CPU power was devoted to 16 cores rather than 24.
I got 27.9 K cinebench (13980HX running 16 cores/24 threads) vs 32.8K with stock standard 24 core no undervolt settings.
I actually think, since the clock speeds were noticeably higher, it makes much more sense in almost all scenarios to run 16 cores rather than 24. There's no game that can benefit from 24 cores.
All cores in this mode ran at maximum all core turbo speeds without throttle, both P and E cores. When 24 cores are enabled, the P cores start at 4.8 in cinebench but settle to an all P core of 4.5 due to thermals. This is with no undervolt though.
Still, a maintained 4.5 is impressive in such a gargantuan laptop chip, but my games are legit running better with 16 cores, and in some cases, even better with ALL E cores disabled (scroll lock shortcut disables them, need to use OSK since laptop doesn't have physical scroll lock key). My Timespy as stock out of the box was over 18K on cpu and 22.1K total score.
It really goes to show the crazy wattage the massive GT77 can provide vs a relative compact 16" like this, as 16 cores here netted just under 20K in CB. After all, it's identical processor architecture.
Single core performance is up when power is all devoted to less cores, it benefits in every way unless you are doing hard core video RENDERING and want the all core grunt.
My GT77 hit 220W in CB R23 LOL but the latest bios caps it to 120W in all modes, it's a known bug, so GT77 users, do NOT update your bios till MSI fixes this!
I am very impressed with the 16 core thermals of this little Acer laptop. Indeed.
i dont understand 100% of what you said, but i got some weird thing with this product. Our predator i5 13500hx or i9 13900HX when testing (render premier or AIDA64, cpu burner) it wont load 100% or only a few sec (usually 80% with 1.6GHZ even with maximum setting). but when i went to bios and disable E core, it runs perfectly fine. But the same CPU on legion works fine without needing to change any setting
I have no idea what you just said.
It’s a gaming laptop like none other at this price point. Punches well above its weight and thermals are extremely advanced compared to other laptops. Plus points are thermals and display quality. While minus point is weight and battery life.
That's a bit pointless to disable E cores which are basically only useful in workloads like cinebench.
Doing this doesn't make any difference in games because the E cores are sleeping anyway. Disabling HT on the P cores can improve game fps very slightly.
Hay Jarrod, I am planning to buy these laptop with 4050 GUP, I am professional 3D artist and working with Maya, Unreal Engine and Blender software. Is this laptop is ok for this kind of work load OR can you suggest different laptop with same budget. Thank you big FAN.
I still haven't decided whether to go for this one or the acer nitro 17, which one would you recommend? Heeeelppp
I would choose 2023 version cause I always panic at high temperature, this model seem really good. Beside I like the new design.
How does this laptop compare to asus strix advantage edition rx 6800m in terms of 4k gaming?
Hey if you were to choose Legion 5i pro 2022 model with 3060 and this helios neo 16 with 4060. Note that the Legion 5i pro appears to be 80$ more than the Helios. Which is better the i712th gen 3060 legion or i513th gen 4060 helios
Jarrod, do you think this will chance if would have to install a dual rank memory stick?
@JarrodsTech hey Jarrod! Would highly appreciate if you could reply as I have been torn choosing a laptop for about 2 weeks now...
I can get this exact same specs for the Neo 16 and the same Legion 5 you have with the R7 6800H and RTX 3060.
Which of the two would you recommend to be used for content creation and gaming as well? Thanks!
What is the power consumption of the laptop if I'll be switching from power brick to USB C charging? Thanks

Can you say way the Helios 16 runs higher cpu temps than the Helios 16 Neo ? Is it the i9 vs the i7? Your tests have them almost 10 degrees difference at idle
Thoughts on this vs Asus Tuf 15.6" RTX 4070 17 1200h*? Price difference right now is minimal at $79. So which will have the better performance and life span?
I was wondering If I should get Helios 16 with rtx 3060 instead of the neo. Can you give me your recommendation?
Looking at how dlss is supported by most new games now, I think frame generation looking at long term will make it more worth it.
hey jarrod what will you choose tuf f15 rtx 4060 i7 12th or this neo 16 btw tuf is more cheaper compared to this
The 85w cpu cap with cooling fan might be a firmware issue limiting wattage to the cpu due to a high draw usb cooling fan?
Hey Jarrod. Could you try the iets GT 500 cooling pad. Most people highly recommend it in the ASUS and Alienware subreddits. In my case my g14 2022 goes from 95c on the cpu in turbo down to the low 70s when gaming. Huge difference.

Im not Sure what to buy, the 2023 with 13900hx and RTX 4060 or the 2024 with 14650hx and RTX 4060 for nearly the same price.
Of courde the 13900hx will be fester, but I cant find anything if the 2024 models may have other improvements like cooling, I/O, Software, or whatever 🤷🏼♂️
I think I'd rather just get the Helios 16 rather than the Neo, since the Neo is plastic & I'm too used to the premium aluminium feel of older Acers (& I hate the flex of plastic).
Both models I have available to me are RTX 4070 & say they can last up to 8 hours (battery life for Li-ion has gotten pretty bad & I hate Li-po).
It's kind of weird how keyboards minimize the shift to fit full sized arrow keys, it's a bit unnecessary.
Do you don’t think that the gpu in this model is a little bit hot ?
I'm thinking of getting this Neo 16 or the Legion 5 slim. Which do you think has the better build quality? I could get a better deal with the Neo 16 but I had bad experience with Acer's aspire before so I'm kinda reluctant.
Which one you bought ?

Like your video alot but for 1500$ which gaming laptop should I get I play a lot of AAA games tks
I am sure the real difference would come when using dlss 3.0, which was not used here. Dlss 3.0 frame generation is only supported by 4xx cards, and it gives min 30-40% bump over the last gen cards. Nvidia heavily marketed this feature for 4x cards, and Digital Foundary has also made a video about it. Tensor cores have also improved, so you will definitely get better results in Ray tracing scenarios. I had Predator 300 with rtx 3060 and recently brought predator helios 16 with rtx 4070. Generation on generation performance for 4xx cards are pathetic, but dlss 3.0 surely gives a nice boost to the frames.
DLSS 3 cannot be used to fairly compare. We test with it on/off in the RTX 40 vs 30 comparisons to demontrate it, but that's it.
Hello! Can you help me on choosing between the Helios 300 (i5-12500H, 3060) or the Helios Neo 16 (i5-13500hx, 4050). Mainly using it for Architectural Editing and Medium Gaming. Thank you!
Neo 16, I too am an architecture student it would be good to go for i5 variant , I bought the i7 variant
High professional review 👌
I own this laptop with this exact same configuration. I have to say I'm really having fun playing games on it. Didn't really mind the bad things that Jarrod pointed out. Didn't really even know that they were bad things until he said that they were. Didn't really mind the framerates as anything above 60fps at high settings is playable anyway. The price in my country is well below msi gp77 which made me choose this one. Also the last year's model with 3070 still has more price than this one.
