Man, heck yeah. I am redoing a fiberglass boat in the front yard so I didn't get the 100 percent clean paint job. I am going to use the red leg stencils and cryptic stencils to hide some of the spots that aren't perfect . Thank you for this video, gives me a good idea of how to do it brotha..thanks.
Good luck with it!
Very nice! that is the best camo pattern i have seen on a boat to date. It amazes me how many talented people there are in the world working in their backyard shops.
Thank you.
I can not believe how nice that turned out……..you do some quality work sir……
Thank you !
Those helpers 😍 and that paint job looks great!
They work good every once in a while
You are doing a great job with those young men! The boat is bad to the bone but your creating some men that can do anything. Hats of to y’all!
Appreciate it brother
That looks amazing!
Thanks
That pattern is awesome. I love it, well done!
Thank you.
Wow!! Very impressive! I ordered a stencil from red leg for my go-devil boat. I hope it turns out as good as yours did. Good job
thank you. i'm sure it will. take your time and clean the stencils pretty regular and its hard to mess up. redleg has a great product. good luck!
Looking good
Thank you.
That camo is unbelievable.
appreciate it. it wasn't for the faint of heart.
Did a good job
thank you!
Nailed the camo man
Appreciate it. I couldn’t be happier with how it turned out. I’ve done camo jobs before but never tried optifade. Thanks for stopping by.
Super cool great videos . Im working on a 16 foot Jon boat.
Nice. Hope it turns out great!
I know you said your basecoat was a dark brown in the video it looks gray I just wanna make sure I have the correct basecoat. Could you verify because this is awesome you did a great job.
Dark brown. Thanks for watching.
Hey great job on how the boat came out and I was interested in the stencils.
Be glad to send them. What’s a good e mail?
My email is in my channel details because it seems like it won't allow me to post it in the comment section.@@JackArmstrong-jackdaddycustoms
@@obetmedina2739 I looked at your channel and couldn’t find an address there either.
It should be there now, but let me know if its not.@@JackArmstrong-jackdaddycustoms
Were you able to find my email?
Where is your anchor locker? It's an important part of the boat, fantastic job on the build buddy it takes some commitment to start and finish a boat great training for the kids too knowing how to build there own stuff
i will have an anchor and chain with rope in a bucket under that hatch... but most of the time we will use the shallow water anchors. we hunt and fish mainly the shallow water marshes and those anchors work the best by far in those environments. thats why i put those anchor pole slots in the back and through the deck in the front. thanks for the kind comments and thanks for watching.
Looks great, interested in the stencils!

What’s your e mail?
What mil of Mylar did you order 10 or 7.5? I have a cricket. You did an awesome job. Glade to see the boy helping out to. Tell them I said they did a good job as well!
i used 6 mil for cutting the stencils. i think the redleg may be a little thicker but the 6 mil was plenty good. thanks for the kind words as well. go check out my other video where i do a cooler and go into a little more detail on the painting process.
How’s the paint been holding up with that process?? I’m going to build a big river jet next spring/summer and would love to paint it a solid color. Figured a primer then paint for that versus camo pattern.
Holding up great so far. I would definitely go check out reelfoot custom camo. He has several colors and it’s a great paint designed for aluminum boats.
@@JackArmstrong-jackdaddycustoms thanks!!
Paint job outstanding Bro. Add a little marsh mud, and duck blood she will be complete. Did the acetone bath work well on the stencils?
Thank you. The acetone cleaned them just right.
Very Nice! Go Gators.
Thanks nate! Roll tide
this is exactly what i wanted to do with my boat thank you very much for posting this. I apologize but I am from up north and i could not understand what you said the stencils were made out of. And can you get a link of where you got the stuff from?
Mylar

I linked a more detailed video on just the painting process
looks great man, how did you end up getting the boat off the trailer and flipped over? I know that has to be a pretty hefty lift to do with manpower
It was very hefty but it was manpower. I had 5 buddies come over and we put 3 on each side and beasted it the best we could.
That’s one badass boat! I love how that turned out. How did you get the original bent piece that made up the sides/bottom of the boat done?
Appreciate it. I got it bent at the aluminum supplier. Told them how I wanted the profile and they did it.
@@JackArmstrong-jackdaddycustoms that is awesome! That turned out great.
@@toddcritchlow1555 thanks man.
Hey man,
How has that paint held up? I saw you used “Camo Designs” paint for base. Is that from the guy in broussard/ Lafayette area?I’m finishing my boat in the next week or so and I am trying to decide which type of paint I am going to use. Also, I may do a top coat clear coat. Any advice or suggestions for paint type and/ or clear coat?
It has held up great. Yes he is from around that area. He sells a clear kit as well that is very reasonably priced. I just used it not long ago. A good clear coat gun is very nice to have. I borrowed a friends nice clear gun and it makes a difference.
Amazing video! Did you scuff the base coat before doing the stencil paint work? Separately, I’m not sure how seriously to take the paint label warnings about having a one-hour window to work with (they say “within one hour or after 24 hours” for additional layers of paint). Did you abide by that, or in your experience should that not be taken too literally? Appreciate any guidance ◡̈
Thank you. I did not scuff the base. I did stay pretty close to the times on the labels. It doesn’t have to be exact but I would recommend staying close at least… humidity and temperature will affect it a good bit so I imagine those times are safe approximates. I let mine dry for around 24 before starting with the stencils.
Thanks so much!
jack, did you have to dilute the paint or was it ready to spray out of the can? this is will be my first time using a paint gun
Ready to spray out of the can but you can dilute if you wish. I did not dilute at all.
Did you clear coat the boat after you painted it all and what kind did you use
No clear coat and it’s holding up great.
What kind of paint gun did u use and what was the tip size. Nice job on the paint looks just like optifade marsh.
I used a cartman from Amazon. It has a 1.3 mm nozzle. I don’t know much about guns but I bought it based on reviews a while back. I have used it for several projects and it works great. Thanks
No thank u
Did you have to thin this paint ? I just ordered some
No. Just spray as is. Of course you adjust your gun as needed, but no thinner required. I believe You can thin it if you prefer though.
See you in November!
i'll be ready! just need ducks in the marsh.
So are you using the RedLeg wraith? Or Hex?
Wraith. It comes with hex, a long kryptek, and a few small krypteks. I also cut some smaller ones myself for more detail but you can get it done just fine with the redleg wraith.
Dang that looks good! I’m wanting to do that but in the timber pattern. Any way you could send me the cut pattern file you used for the small ones?
Sure. It will probably be next week if that’s ok. Give me an email
@@JackArmstrong-jackdaddycustoms did you say they give you the colors to use for timber?
@@thebandedretrieve they tell you which ones to use in which order with the instructions they send.
send me your email address and ill send you the .svg files for the smaller patterns. even if you didn't have a vinyl cutter you could print them out and cut them out with an exacto knife.
info@thebandedretrieve.com
If you don’t mind me asking. What did the materials run ya?
prices have changed since i bought it and some was on hand or sourced from scrap yard, but i can say about a quarter to a third of what it would cost to buy one.
How many cans of spray paint did you use for each color?
I can’t remember for sure but I think it was probably like 4-5 for the light tan and then maybe 2 cans at the most for the other colors. Other than the base, you obviously use the most tan.
how thick is the aluminum plate for the bottom of your boat?
1/8
@@JackArmstrong-jackdaddycustoms thank GBU
Where do you find what colors and instructions for the timber camo
They are on the instructions they send out with the template. I name them in the video with which layers to use them for the timber pattern as well.
How is the spray can paint holding up ?
@@treverwilliams6538 really good so far. I have used it on a couple of boats. A camo pattern hides any places it may fail, but the key it to use a good base layer. It doesn’t have any trouble sticking to other paint, it has trouble sticking to aluminum so as long as you use a good base that sticks to aluminum you should be good.
@@JackArmstrong-jackdaddycustoms the boat I got has a solid tan color I’m going to attempt to turn it into the optifade timber using the wraith stencils. I can’t decide if I should buy the paint from redleg or if I should use the spray paint
What pattern did you use and where did you source it from?
I used the wraith pattern from redleg for the most part. i also made some of my own that are similar to redleg but smaller and slightly different patterns for more detail. just the redleg will get you plenty close enough to optifade though.
@@JackArmstrong-jackdaddycustoms excellent. God bless sir.
@@eduffy4937 same to you
How many cans did you use?
One gallon of the base. 3 cans each of the other predominant colors and 1 can each of the colors with the last stencil.
what kind of paint was used
Reelfoot custom camo for the base. The rest is just spray cans. In bare aluminum,, the base has to be legit.
would you be willing to send the template that you made?
sure. just drop your email without the at symbol
