classic channel 4 memory of closing credits in the 80s era good funny and laughter is well best of 1991 era love bring it back please love horse racing
We didn't know we had it so good, such wonderful and enjoyable racing days. Today's first effort by ITV was wooden, and what on earth is that Warhorse puppet got to do with racing? I would've though British racing would want to do all it can to distance themselves from equine carnage especially with the Grand National due in April. And why were the commentators all wearing black ties? All the horses had just had their birthdays after all and not a mention.
I just knew that ITV Racing would not be as great. I would imagine many of the old team from Channel 4 would have worked for other organisations. Anglia Television made this one because it was filmed at Newmarket, home of the Guineas and Dewhurst Stakes. Kempton and Sandown for Thames/LWT, Newcastle for Tyne Tees, York and Doncaster for Yorkshire Television, etc.
brought scott graham goode john mc crirrit john tyrrel derick thompson and rest of the old school are the greatest john francames love the morning line on saturday morning l grewe up watching it when l was a teenage lot it great deal bring the old present fora reunions
In those days of Ch4 Racing Ayr (Scottish TV), Chester, Haydock (Granada), Newmarket (Anglia), York, Doncaster (Yorkshire), Newcastle (Tyne Tees), Epsom, Kempton, Windsor, Sandown (Thames/LWT), Warwick (Central)
Thomas Lyster ITV/Channel 4 occasionally covered Haydock when there was a meeting which the BBC could not cover eg the Lancashire Oaks on the final Saturday of Wimbledon
John Francome was gotten rid of way to quickly & ahead of Jim ( I'm tipping the fav ) McGrath!! Francome had forgot more about racing than McGrath could ever know & wasn't afraid to tip up 25/1 or bigger' unlike today's I fancy the 1st and 2nd favourites in this race brigade.
IMG apparently asked Francombe repeatedly if he would stay on at C4 when they took over, but Francombe only wanted to work for Highflyer and Andrew Franklin hence he left.
John did indeed leave of his own accord - he probably got out at the right time as watching this back, his irreverent banter will have no place in the ridiculously sanitised coverage of the future...
I also loved how much fun they clearly had while still doing a great job of covering the sport
Always loved bbc 1 racing on a saturday , mostly during NH season mind! channel 4 was good too especially with jonny francome. loved the intro music

When the coverage was all about the horses and not the side shows .
Much better coverage back then than it is today, those boys from ITV especially Matt Chapman need to get another job.
So very true.
Todays presenters are garbage.
I hope it's not wrong of me to say that i like the music they used for this :)

Please Highflier and C4 bid for racing coverage. ITV coverage is crap.
So miss channel 4 racing. Better than this i.t.v boring thing we have now
Chamberlain and Chums are very poor

Haddock was a bbc track back then
With chips and curry sauce please

They also used Global Broadcast Television (no more) outside broadcast units in the 1990s saw them at York in 1996.
Would Perth have been the only Grampian course?
Was this Kempton at the Christmas meeting in 1991 as that was at that time Channel 4's last meeting of the year
brought scott can not prounds the word good try brough scott loved him well great present of the 80s era

James H - Thank you for the information I did not know that, shame because John was knowledgeable and good entertainment
