The great thing about TH-cam and your uploads especially, sir, is the memories they bring back. As the years pass, I find them becoming more bittersweet than fond though. I miss these days so much, when racing was a major spectacle. We loved to hate Big Mac, took the mickey out of Derek “whoa there big fella” Thompson and laughed at The Noble Lord’s gaffes but my word, they were brilliant presenters who could carry a days racing show on their own if needs be. John Francome and Brough were so different yet both brilliant. You felt like you knew them both. Sadly, despite the High Definition and close multiple camera angles, the passion for the sport, once tangible, seems to be gone these days. Along with the personalities.
I think you’ve summed things up brilliantly there David. Yes distant days now but totally captivating. I’d forgotten I had this. New gems coming up every now and then I’ve got an hour of the afternoon’s sport too I’ll be putting that on soon too
I think it's because presenters are expected to be more "polished" nowadays. People like Oli Bell and Ed Chamberlin do love racing.Racing Post showson TH-cam are more irreverent- people like Dave Orton, Graham Cunningham and Paul Kealy
Great post, fantastic memories & characters from yesteryear. Many thanks. The Noble Lord & Francome could carry a show on their own, if ever required. I wouldn't knock todays presenters that much, they just have a totally different style. Todays TV pundits do the job fine, but lack the personalities (& wealth of knowledge) on show here.
To be fair, Carson was many things but he always tried. I was never a fan of his pushy style and thought he always had a huge Lester Piggott shaped chip on his shoulder but he always gave his all without being brutal to his mount. There were many better jockeys but not many with more determination. Like Kevin Keegan in football and Steve Davis in snooker, he worked so hard on his weaknesses they became strengths.
Yes I agree David. Willie had no need to cheat he was just guilty of errors of judgement at times. Funny how people tend to forget the thousands of winners just a few mistakes which we are all guilty of at times
@@roderigodetriano well said. Like all top jockeys, Willie took risks during a race and like all the great champions, they come off 9 times out of 10. We rarely remember those brilliant pieces of tactical riding. Yet one error of judgement and it’s magnified. I hate to see a jockey drop their hands but as a punter, what we forget is it’s swings and roundabouts. I’m sure I will have benefitted from it more than I’ve been hard done by.
Used to love watching Ch4 racing as the presenters could all have a laugh. Then they ruined it by sacking all the favourites in favour of a more Woke panel. And they were terrible. Unsurprisingly people turned off in their droves and ITV took racing off Ch4.

Glad you enjoyed it Arthur
I'm surprised to find John Francombe presenting. This is from before I got into racing and he was always a co-analyst later on
Picture puzzle: Polar Express?
People with character and opinions on tv , those were the days
A debate about Carson not trying? They're still there now defending him.
