    I feel like one reason people hate on Monk is that it kind of occupies a weird party role that shifts around as you level up. They’re kinda dps, kinda tanks, kinda control, and they get a bunch of miscellaneous stuff that’s really hard to categorize. Makes it a bit hard to place what exactly they should be good at, and how exactly they should be built.
    I personally think they’re really fun to play. Monk might be my favorite class.

    • @agarnes100
      @agarnes100 2 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      Bards are in a similar vein though. They're a face but can also be DPS or skill monkey and can heal decently well or buff the party.
      People have been hating on monks since they were first introduced because they don't think kung Fu should/would exist in a fantasy setting. Even though martial arts in the real world predate metal armor.
      Same with guns, which were invented before platemail in the real world, but that's a whole other argument.

      @aquamarinerose5405 2 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      @@agarnes100 I think saying it's PURELY about the kung-fu issue is a bit reductive. Monk across various editions of D&D has been an incredibly unusual and confusing class (Like in 3 and 3.5 they were basically explicitly the worst class in the game). In 5e it somewhat shakes off most of their mechanical issues, but do still struggle a bit with some of those same issues as before that it's kinda all over the place with its abilities.

      I personaly think monks are a bit underwellming at early level, the felling that fighter with unarmed attacks is better then a monk is kinda true until lvl 14 or so, stunning strike is good, but the monks other features are limmited, and get more restrictive because you have very few ki point. And the damage is just bad until lvl 5, other classes jusr outshine you until later levels. I and all of my player still love monk, but i allways find myself buffing the monk with magic items or giving them extra ki just to keep up.(all of this is my opinion, and sorry for my bad english, its not my first language)

    As a Monk main player who made it all the way through Rise of Tiamat, I can say Way of the Open Palm is a great way to challenge a player. Stunning the entire enemy side in one turn so everyone of your friends can go crazy on their turns is more satisfying than killing one guy on your turn

    To add on to the Saitama glory! If you want a low level "one punch", take war priest early (or magic initiate if you rolled stats and dont need the ability improvements) and grab Inflict Wounds: 3d10 neurotic melee spell attack. For most 1st tier enemies, that can kill in one hit (especially if the other heroes warmed the big bad up for you, as is anime tradition).

    Likely burn war booster on the first swing to make sure we hit.
    And then we burn 15 no points to apply quivering palm 5 times. On a fail, they are going to explode, next turn. So don't forget to use the last point to throw in a stun.

      I would have taken an 18 lvl of monk tho instead of a cleric lvl. I don't even remember what monks get at that level, but it would be one more ki point, putting you at 18, allowing for a sixth "one-punch"
      Edit: I just checked, and 18 lvl grants invis and dmg res for a minute for 4 ki points. That's pretty in character, since Saitama is generally unaffected by most dmg types, and in the practice fight with Genos, he moves so fast he's practically invisible

For example, in his video after he did Groot he decided to belittle the people saying that Groot should have been Warforged instead of a Goliath, saying that "just because he's made of wood doesn't mean he should be a Warforged" even though he's done almost the exact same thing in past videos, like making Garrus a lizardfolk because their both scaley

      Artificer also can gain the strongest combo in the entire game at level 2, though you do need a single ally to do this. An artificer at level 2 can make two bags of holding, he can also learn find familiar. You get an ally who has find familiar as well, make the familiar both hawks (or some other bird that can carry a bag), have them ready their actions in combat and have them both fly near whatever you are fighting. When they get close enough, one bird flies into the other birds bag of holding while holding a bag of holding sucking all enemies within 10ft into the Astral plane. Instant win.

      Or maybe a new way of using their abilities? Hmmm. Wonder how it'd work out if all the Ki features like Flurry of Blows, Patient Defense, and Step of the Wind were one minute duration effects? Would still be limited by bonus action economy, but you'd only need to spend 1 Ki point per combat on the ones you use in most cases. Also makes them more practical in non-combat encounters where bursts of physical prowess would come in handy. Would fit the fantasy of the class a bit better maybe?

    5e Monks are not bad, they're just stupid frustrating to build for beyond "I roll to Punch" Monk. You had to go Point-Buy to get good stats in STR, DEX, CON, and WIS, still had to dump both INT and CHA, and zero ASIs were invested in feats. When the only feat you can invest in is competing with maxing out your DEX or WIS, that means all customization outside of race or subclass comes directly at the cost of being a good Monk.

      They're just highly unbalanced. If you don't know what you're doing or pick the wrong subclass it's increasingly easy for a player to have a horrible time playing their character. The class can be great, but it's really hard for newer players to know what they're getting themselves into choosing it, and then a bunch of them have a bad experience, adding to the negative view of Monks.

    • @ediivg9428
      @ediivg9428 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Shalakor yeah, fair enough. Tho the subclasses aren't as bad as ppl say. Kensei gives you free +3 weapons and better AC than most monks and a few ranged options (rare for monks). Four Elements I've seen in action and it can be terrifying

    • @Shalakor
      @Shalakor 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ediivg9428 While this is kind of a Sword Coast Adventurer's Guide problem in general, playing Way of Long Death can easily just make the player bitter every time a teammate gets a kill, which is pretty likely at level 3 in particular, since that's right where the Monk's attacks are most likely to not be doing the job of getting kills (played with someone that had this misfortune). And, if there's absolutely anyone else in the party that can grant Temp HP, feels completely like a dead subclass. And at level 6 you have to give up attacking at all that turn to do a fear effect that can friendly fire, making it pretty much just an advanced True Strike, so another potentially dead level. And then Sun Soul can have similar problems given the feature counts as spell attacks, thus going against flavor of monk abilities not being effected by antimagic, and are very limited range (although, bonus action Burning Hands is a pretty fair cost at 2 ki, better that 2 ki for a normal action casting like four elements math).
      Four Elements is bad, but it's flexible enough to be salvaged by an experienced or smart player.
      Even the really good ones, can be hard to manage just because of how specific the use cases can get with their features. ...Kensai is pretty straight forward and easy to use, though, and most people agree to that assessment.

      Hmmmmmm...maybe you can use the feat from tashas that gives yu the unarmed fighting style of d6 to d8 early and/or the magic initiate feat for hex to do extra d6 per attack?
      Then you are doing the equivalent of a greatsword or more for each of your attacks by 4th lvl if yu take variant human or custom lineage.
      If you like elves or half-elfs yu can get the feat elven accuracy for crit fishing when you get advtg on attacks.
      Just in combat move to flanking position w/ a team mate to get advtg if your dm allows or if not, something else the monk gets like the choice of knocking them prone, or shadow monk.
      If you wind up multiclassing to gloomstalker ranger for 3lvs, you get advtg on all your attacks in all darkness, extra initiate bonus based on yur wisdom, an extra attack at the start of each fight, and an extra d8 of damg on that attack.
      Way of the long death monk and mercy monk have some nice options too.

The description of integrated defense says as follows "Your body has built-in defensive layers, which can be enhanced with armor", and the AC portion says nothing of wearing armor being a requirement. This means rules as written you can get the +1 AC without wearing armor.

    okay, so. I was thinking about Genos myself the other day. the very simple and probably more powerful build would be some sort of artificer fighter hybrid, probably this vid. eldrich cannon for his blasters, fireball for his kabooms, it makes sense. However a build I would love is 4 elements monk. probably with 2 levels of fighter for you know what. The ki would work quite well for a "charge" system, think of them as battery life. genos is fast, monk. he punch fast, monk. and he shoots blaster cannons, plasma beams, and big ol explosions. most of which can be done with 4 elements. up to 60 feet of movement, action surge and dash, for 180 movement isn't anything to joke about. may not be the fastest dnd char ever but he do be booking it by normal standards. or you could throw out 6 attacks instead (with a ki point you average 4 no action surge) and if you wanna just burn your ki you can do fangs of the fire snake on every attack for 8d10- 12d10 damage which.... honestly isn't that great.... and it'd cost half your ki points.... monk doesn't really do well in the damage department. I guess sun soul has more fitting abilities as well. regardless. Fun concept! can't wait to watch the vid.

The creator of the series said that the idea of the anime is having a main character who has all the power he would normally obtain in the last episode of the series since the beginning, so that fit the theme (and if you face something that don't die in one punch, call it ''Consecutive Normal Punches''). ^o^
