In order to build new 240's, you first need a proper volvo factory in Sweden again....and sweden as a nation barely exists anymore, and volvo is chinese these days. Im in sweden, tomorrow i am buying a really nice looking low mileage 240 GL wagon from 1992
I love these stories of cars with amazing mileages. Selden's story is a fine example. Great story of where he has been in the Volvo. Testimony to how well the 240 was built and engineered.
Thanks Irv! We are VERY proud to have a customer like Selden, who has been happy enough to service with us for over two and a half decades! Keep on rolling!
I've heard of several front-wheel drive 850 Volvos approaching 500,000 miles. They may not be as bullet-proof as the older ones but they're still one of the better-built cars out there.
This is a testament to a car manufacturer. Who wouldn’t like a Volvo 240? It’s a timeless classic that is reliable and comfortable; I’d love to have one of these! I want one with an automatic transmission and air conditioning…
That’s and Amazing milestone! Those petrol engines are unbelievably reliable. I recently got a Volvo S80 with 718k miles and it’s still drives very well, but it’s looking a bit tired so I’m doing it up
I bought 1993 volvo 240 2.3,in Europe,Poland. It was imported from some other Europe country with 300000 km on the clock.Soon after odometer broke. And it had two owners in Poland before me and 10 years on Polish roads. It could have done 200000 in this time, easy. And no maintance,I got it with suspension totally destroyed, some other parts never changed...And it does not look bad at all, very little rust, all is working!!Even with uneven iddle, that is hard to diagnose,it is able to drive 150kmh no problem on highway(but bad suspension, and car pulling on side making it unsafe and dangerous),I even drove it for a short time 180!!!On LPG!!!That is old stile installed, with just a hole in intake manifold, and lpg is just sprayed trough this hole!!It is amazing and really tough car!!It starts every time,it has strange noices from berings,or diferential(was not maintaned and serviced)but it goes!!I bought it from car dealer for 500 euro,it was siting there for half of year and just about to be sold for parts...I have BIG plans for this car :-) am just amazed how tough this car is!There is possibility that someone changed the engine,am not sure, because it looks so clean! But it just might be that it is a volvo 240 and half milion is no problem for it!And engine has 14bar compresion(it was not measured properly, aguy just wanted to chech is head gasket ok)or somewhere in that range.Amazing, just amazing car.
I ve have had volvo 240 when i was younger, now when older i have promised to myself that one day when i find a decent 240 i definetly will get one, it's going to be a red 240 Polar series wagon. I love thos cars and also 740 models, they are everlasting.
As a Brooklyn New York volvo owner; I must follow up with my previous comment saying it's a beautiful story. It's not only the mileage this man put on his car, but the joy he had driving everywhere whether it was to work or for leisure. Many people like myself would like a life like his. I feel also living in cities where he does may be less congested than NYC. It would be hard for most in NYC to put on that kind of mileage with heavy traffic on the belt parkway every day. Irv Gordon another guy who I am convinced drove to the moon to put 3 million miles on lol just kidding.
When you look at the fact 70% or engine wear occurs on start up because there's not oil pressure protecting rotating components, its not surprising a lot of cars don't make half that mileage. His lasted because he drove long distances often which reduced wear in the engine and combined that with early oil changes like every 2000 miles a lot of cars would get there.
I have a '13 C30 that will be 1 year old on May 11th! I'm planning on passing it on to my oldest daughter when she's of driving age in 8 years. I'm a former auto insurance claim rep so I bought it for safety because the reputation is true. Seeing this story I'm hopping ours will hold up like this! Bought kept & maintained in Md by the way!
1994 ford explorer 123,445 miles, runs beautifully, minor rust ( what to expect for a 22 year old car ), one ( two ) previous owners ( my grandparents ). My grandpa is the reason that car is still running today. ( RIP Grandpa Kalkman 1942-2009 ).
Not sure if the new Volvo's are as good as the ones built in that era but it is pretty easy to get 250,000 miles/400,000 km out of any car if you stay on top of the maintenance and don't abuse it. My 2006 Hyundai Elantra is at 203,000 miles. The transmission shifts smoothly , the engine uses no oil, and I have no doubt it will run another 50,000 without a major repair
things to consider for reaching a million miles: head gasket and engine should be original not overhauled yet, as I had on my 1988 740 GLE. I reach 1,000,000 miles Jan 25, 2014 at the 4 corners valley monument. That is the black car showed on this video as you can see I am missing 1medallion. Oil used 10-30 Pennzoil. +LehmanVolvo Do you think the new volvo vehicles would be able to do 1,000,000? The car with the most miles on it that my family's ever owned is 210,000. My dad's 2006 Range Rover has 177,000.
+Michael Sackstein As long as the valves are kept properly adjusted there's no reason they won't last a million miles in a Volvo OHC engine. There are no rocker arms to wear out and the valves/cam get about 10x the lubrication that they would get in a comparative OHV engine.
Shout out to Halifax! Cars around here rust out before coming anywhere near that kind of mileage. My dad had an Oldsmobile with close to 300000 miles on it before it rusted out, who knows how long it could have lasted?
A 240 odometer not breaking before 1 million!? My Silver '84 Wagon reads 224,983 miles but, judging by writing which came with the car that number has to be closer to 400,000 miles!
Wow that 240 looks great for that many miles! Mine looks exactly the same except its a 91 and has a little over 200k on it, it still doesn't look as well perserved as that one though. Keep that Volvo rolling!
wow... However I think the main reason it has lasted so long is down to the driver. If a vehicle is treated well (driven carefully and serviced regularly & properly - using quality oils) then many brands should be capable of very high mileage. This is especially so in dry climates, as rust is often the killer of anything made of metal. That said being a Volvo of that age, it is of simple, non complex technology that is built with quality products.
My buddy had one with 325k on a 92 740 and my dad had a 96 ‘Mercedes c280 that got to 330k those ( Mercedes Volvo and Old Accords and Camrys) are basically the only cars that could make it that far

I saved it from the crusher. It was turned in to the scrap yard for a no start. It's totally original and as clean. I offered them 800 dollars and they agreed to move it to the parking lot via forklift. I had major anxiety about them forklifting the Volvo. They said not to worry. The older Volvos won't get hurt. I tell you it was scary but they were very careful. We had it running ten minutes after being delivered to the auto shop I manage. We've named him LUCKY
My grandfather have an old Volvo, can't remember the make and model but it was from the 80's, he drove the crap out of that car, and he was using it to transport allot of stuff, winter like summer on salty slushy roads here in Norway, it still runs to this day, he has a more comfortable car but kept his old one, it's almost 2 million kilometers, he never had an engine rebuild or anything major done to it, just oil change, and light bulbs lol, these cars are ridiculous, he said that the only way to kill it is by shooting it with the Adolf cannon and bury it in the ocean.

My 🇸🇪 84 Volvo 240 has 122.000 miles 😁
This stone was on my birthday
My grandfather have an old Volvo, can't remember the make and model but it was from the 80's, he drove the crap out of that car, and he was using it to transport allot of stuff, winter like summer on salty slushy roads here in Norway, it still runs to this day, he has a more comfortable car but kept his old one, it's almost 2 million kilometers, he never had an engine rebuild or anything major done to it, just oil change, and light bulbs lol, these cars are ridiculous, he said that the only way to kill it is by shooting it with the Adolf cannon and bury it in the ocean.
Was it a wagon , sedan/coupe , or hatchback?
