Chuang Tse-tung, one of the few TRUE dragons. We can only speculate if he would have won also in 67 and 69.

I love the Stiga Expert tables. They were the top tournament table of choice for so many years. It was easily the best table I have ever played on back in early 90's.

Just brilliant, thank you janus. I would like to point out, however, that this is the quarter final stage, as is Hans Alsér's math against Karakasevic, which you've also so generously uploaded.
This is pure gold, we're blessed to have someone like you provide it to us!

I've heard of Chuang since childhood but never seen him in action on any screen. Thanks a million for the upload. Hope we can see more of the same kind in future.

    貴重なものを見させていただきました。今から40年以前に、写真でしか見ることができなかった当時の世界チャンピオン達のプレー。今は亡き荻村先生のお顔も見えます。IKEAの広告も新鮮にみえます。

This was true -- for the contemporary (post-sponge) era -- 8 years ago, but not anymore as Ma Long won WTTC in 2015-17-19.

This was the return of China from 5 year self imposed exile in Halmstad Sweden 1970 not at the World Champs in Japan 1971 as the narrative has it.They were facing techniques they had never seen before the fast topspin loop against topspin and Stellan and Hans Alser were using Mark 5 rubber which hadn' t been marketed at that time which altered the way the game would be played in the future because of the extra spin and speed it generated

I have to take issue with the Chung Tes-tung serve, today's umpire's would have foul served him more or less every time!!!, I would be amazed if the ball was going up more than four inches!!!!! giving Bengtsson at times no time to read the spin yet he still won, Surely Chung didn't do this in his peak years!!

      bengtsson's serve is also illegal.

Andrew Dosher True that these serves would be called fouls in today's matches, but back in this era, there were no rules, it was perfectly legal, and so it's irrelevant. Up until recently, serves were hidden and still very much considered "fouls," but everyone did it, and it wasn't bad sportsmanship. There is no issue, not back in those times.

+Andrew Dosher Today's serves are almost all high toss. I recall the 1976 U.S. Open in Philly. Dragutin Surbek vs. Desmond Douglas. As soon as the match started the umpire cited Surbek for illegal serves. Immediately the Yugoslav coach stopped the match and demanded the umpire be replaced, which he was. Since the match was covered by ESPN it was argued the focus should be on the players, not the officials. In other words, as long as both players have no objections, let everyone serve the way they want to. Surbek went on to win that match deuce in the fifth and went on to the finals where he defeated Canadian coach and former team mate Zlatco Cordas in the finals.

It was these sorts of serves that provoked the 6-inch rule. Until then you had to throw the ball up and hit it on the drop, but the rule was frequently ignored. I had a half-inch toss and umpires insisted I was hitting it out of my hand. I wasn't, but it certainly looked like it. I practiced thousands of serves in the basement and always made a little toss.

It was generally understood at the time that Li Furong was the better player, and that Chuang's advancement was as much political, because of his name (re Mao _Tse-tung_ ), as skill. Meeting in the World's Li would likely have beaten Chuang every single time.

      tubeist-dan,
From what I heard, the inner-circle of the Chinese National Team, Li Fu Rong became better and in 1963, he won a few matches against Mr. Chuang but it was still a toss-up between these 2 best players at the time. However, in1965, Mr. Li was the clear winner against Mr. Chuang several times when competing inside China. To Mr. Chuang's credit, he was the true winner in 1961.

This is so embarrassing to watch. From the serves to the players jumping around to get the ball.

Hello George, I agree Bengtsson's serve at times is a foul serve, and a foul is a foul but Chung's serve were far more blatant fortunetely in these modern times the umpires have cracked down a lot on serves like that, unfortunately at the lower end of the sport I'm afraid it is still a large problem!

    • @-danR
      @-danR 6 ปีที่แล้ว

Chuang was using short pips, with much less spin-deception available. Even though the serves are modern-day illegal, he was essentially doing little more than putting the ball into play. All attackers were ready for a quick-serve tactic, it would be little more than another attacking shot.

    • @benthekeeshond545
      @benthekeeshond545 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Andrew,
Both players serve legally. You are watching a match from 1970. The rules changed quite a bit and so is the ball. I believe as long as you are not throwing the ball back into the paddle, you are fine. Watch Jiang Jia Liang from 1983, when he served from his backhand side, it was identicle to what Mr. Chuang did.

Short pimples have more deception because it's easier to serve short and low even with a super fast movement.
The best pure server ever was Liu Guoliang and he was a pimples player.

tubeist- dan Haha, that's bull. The Chinese elite players today, hit much, much cleaner. They would counter these players easily, and get them on consistency. :)
