    2 gentleman players of highest skill level. Wardner was far from his peak here and Samsonov was thought to inherit Wardner's world dominance. One thing we all know, both lasted a long time and will always be respected.

    24:49 I think Samsonov has a form of anti spin / low spin on his backhand. So many times Waldner's 2nd topspin drops into the net, which is a classic sign. Plus Waldner is always a little perplexed each time this happens, and keeps looking at his bat, and even gives it a wipe on a good few occasions. Great game.

      I can promise you that he would have known that and adjusted his game for it.
      He's been in the world elite for almost 35 years, he knows all the materials.
      It was just humid and the modern rubbers back then performed shit in humidity.
      It probably is like so that he had a new series of rubbers played in low humidity and this was the first really humid game, and he went with the calibration for "old rubbers". That's my cent...

      @@andreaseriksson8803 Waldner as good as he were didn't have a natural bh loop/counterloop, which is why he had troubles against short pimples.
      He did adjust for example against Liu Guoliang but he had to do special training and after the 2000 Olympics he had too many injuries to adjust to the 40mm ball.
      Hell,even Samsonov didn't really adjust his backhand to the 40mm ball as evidenced by his 2003 WTTC match against Kreanga.
      It was mentioned by many players at the time than bh driving/blocking didn't work with the 40mm ball because the two hemispheres had different hardness and you couldn't know which side of the ball you're hitting.
      One can see how Wang Liqin changed his bh to a more loopy counter movement with the 40mm,altough he was still weak against players with good bh.

      Rubber and sponge technology vastly improved after 2008. And there have been very recent advances in rubbers and sponges also. Plastic balls are used now too, which tend to spin a little bit less than the celluloid balls. And hell, even blade technology has improved considerably in recent years.
      This is why the game looks different nowadays. Player styles play a small part too. And the styles are now being shaped by the new technology in the equipment. It's all about power shots, power blocks, and agility from the player.
      And honestly, Waldner wasn't overly heavy on spin, and he wasn't overly powerful either. His greatness stems from manipulating his opponents' shots. He would set you up with a decent look at your "best" personal shot and usually he would get you to hit it cross-table to his backhand. And boy, he loved the backhand block. He would block up the line a bunch too. And he was such a master at manipulating the play like that, that it was really difficult to get him out of his setups. I'm sure he had tons of setups and finishes. And he could pull him off. Nothing else even mattered. Waldner in his absolute prime would SMOKE any current top guys like Fan Zhendong. It doesn't matter how quick Fan moves. Waldner will make it look physically effortless and totally smash Fan. JUST SAYING!

      The sheer speed and spin from the ball right now is slower but nowadays the ball is played mostly off the bounce or at the highest point in his arc which results in faster paced rallys and less time for reaction. Despite rubber and sponge advancement, speed glue was faster.

      These days it just called "booster" and most of the pro players still use it. Especially the Chinese. It's too expensive for the regular Joe to use though since "boosting" rubbers decreases the rubber's life considerably. They should really ban boosting too so everyone is on a level playing field. I would boost my rubbers too if i had an old Asian man to do it for me and then assemble all my bats. It's tricky, time consuming, and expensive and a bit wasteful. Rubbers that may last 2 or 3 years unboosted are only good for 2 or 3 months boosted.

      Wow, that comment is going out on a limb. Certainly the Chinese always said Waldner had flaws, but they were comparing minor differences from perfect technique of the time. However, his ability to disguise what shot & spin he was hitting made him unplayable at his best. Even here, way past his physical best, he shows what he can set up; but he failed to finish off many positions and Samsonov is way too good not to capitalise.

      Samsonov's revenge was actually his 3-0 victory over Waldner in 2001 WTTC. Only 4 yrs needed. They met 5 times. Waldner won the first 2 meetings in 1997, 2000 and Samsonov won the next 3 meetings, 2 in 2001 and this match in 2005.

    Persson in 2008 play almost equally with samsonov in Beijing 2008.
    In this match, Waldner look mediocre.
    If he play with Persson, I bet Persson will win

      It's a match up thing.Persson has the reach and bh to keep up against Samsonov who has a similar style to him.But he wouldn"t beat Ma Lin in 2004.Also the Olympics had lighter schedule compared to WTTC which helped veterans.

    • @Misha2010Tube
      @Misha2010Tube 7 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      You are right, the ball was white, and according to the ITTF rules, one can wear a yellow shirt while playing with a white ball. Yet, it is more difficult to see a white ball on the yellow background, compared to seeing a white ball on a dark (blue, black, brown, etc) background. If you don't feel the difference between yellow and black background, then your comment makes sense. I do feel the difference. This is why I call the wearing a yellow shirt the dirty trick. Some things are dirty while being legal, and vice versa.

    • @andreialexandruparfeni7129
      @andreialexandruparfeni7129 7 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      I see what you mean. It's borderline dirty, but I don't think Waldner did it on purpose.

    • @paulw7874
      @paulw7874 7 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      Well of course he did it on purpose - he's playing for Sweden and yellow and blue are the Swedish national colours

    • @andrewmccauley6262
      @andrewmccauley6262 5 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Waldner was the fairest player on tour, often deliberately losing a point when he thought that he was given a point unfairly. To imply that he would do anything dishonourable in table tennis is a joke, especially since he was likely required to play with the uniform his country provided (in their national colours) which does not clash with the white ball, and played with those colours like all the swedes did over many years.
