Especially how they take care of their young. As you know, many livebearers eat their young so it would be a nice change for me I think.

The pea puffers thanks to you. 🐡😊 And I'm breeding Pelvicachromis taeniatus "Red" Nigerian, and Pelvicachromis roloffi “Kolente”. I'm not cross breeding them. I like to keep the lines pure. But I am line-breeding them. I'm working on an experimental project with them too, and I'll let you know it it turns out successfully. I also keep the fry with the parents and let them rear them until they're old enough to get on. It's a beautiful thing to watch. Thank you so much for this!
Great video, i have had a pair spawn recently. Only a small clutch of around 30. This is my males second brood, 1st lot of about 70. He is in with an albino now and i have a 50/50 mix, so good to see dad is a carrier for the albino gene.

As in didnt use the one offered or didnt have one therefore made due? Because filter feeder shrimp will pick off the bottom if they are starving to death doesnt mean it's normal. it is a necessity, they make due. So if they had no cave to begin with nature would take over and they would make due. If there is one and its ignored then idk good on ya for being master krib breeder. *tips hat respectfully*
Hi Mark I’ve been keeping fish since I was about 12 and now at 48 I have never kept kribs and didn’t realise until recently that I could keep them in a community tank! I bought two of these earlier today, haven’t had chance yet to see if they’ve given me a male and female. So wish me luck hun ! I’m really really looking forward to keeping these and hopefully breeding them! Great video!
If you got a male and female, I will safely assume that they have bred already if not several times. Changing their diet or just doing a 25% water change is enough to immediately trigger these guys into spawning.

I had a pair of Kribs in my very first community aquarium together with a few tetras, rasboras, the usual community fish that most of us start with. It was a 30 gallon tank, 3 feet long and everybody got along just fine. Nobody bothered the Kribs and the Kribs didn't bother the other fish. All went really well until the day came when the Kribs decided to spawn. They became territorial which would not have been a problem if their territory had not been most of the tank. It stretched from the right hand side of the tank for 2 1/2 feet. Came down one morning to find all the other fish crammed into the 6 inches at the left hand side. Any fish that moved out of that 6 inch space was immediately chased back. The male in particular became very aggressive; he made no attempt to kill anything but he would certainly chase anything that he felt was encroaching upon his territory.
I found with mine that this kind of behavior settles down after the male has fathered 3 or 4 batches. My male will allow serpae and cardinal tetras to swim above the fry at a distance, but if they get too close he'll chase them off. Apart from that he's pretty chilled. I think he could be approaching his final years. He's the second generation born in my tank, his parents and grandparents long gone.
Hi Mark. I keep Nigerian Red kribs. I read they need sand substrate as they sift it through their gills when browsing the bottom for food. Sand has been found in their intestines and it's believed this helps their digestion.
Hi, I have a question! At what size do they start breeding? Actually, I bought a pair, and they are pretty docile to each other except for occasional chases by the male...They are around 2inch in size..I do not know the exact age of the fishes as I bought it online...

I have a 2 cave 10g layout w/plants. I have endlers for dithers. My kribs did lay eggs when I first got them, but nothing came of it. I've had them for months now and they are still shy until I feed them. Then I might see one of the kribs. Maybe some day I'll see some babies show up.
Mark awesome job yet again, have a question though why did you choose to place the babies in a substrated tank as opposed to an easier to clean substrate less tank? I would be too concerned about uneaten food/babies getting caught in the substrate. Love the video and love seeing the juvenile coloration on the babies. Thanks again!

Would the babies be safe if they did as my 2 are really aggressive when they spawn? love the video the babies are so cute. Such good fish to watch when they have a fall out its so funny.
lovely , I bought a couple a earlier this year and now i have 30-40 in a 120 litre species tank and i find mine like a whole coconut shell to breed in . unfortunately the female took exception to the original male and done for him i suspect he ate a couple of fry but not too sure .
Hey dude solid video, already help me out big time as I had to separate my 2 mating kribs from my 50 gallon community tank because they both showed ultra aggression towards the others to the point they had all the fish on the one side, and the other fish on the other side Seperated then into an established 10 gallon tank with their cave, and successfully have swimming fry Both great parents as well My question to you is, when can I separate the pair back into my community tank?? Obviously not now as i assume the babies are about 10 days old, they’re free swimming but only around the mom/dad right now Thanks for the video and hopefully you reply 👊
Were your salinity levels correct? Temperature? Using an airpump and stone is important too because the eggs need to be suspended in the water column so that they don't clump on top of each other. Those old, comic book SeaMonkey instructions were not very thorough.

I’m new to Kribensis I have had 5 about 4 months, 1 adult male and 2 adult female and the other 2 are young adults and at this point I think they are females, the male and a female had Fry about 2 weeks ago they are free swimming, wonderful parents and the male is a good dad and a mate, but to the others he’s aggressive to the point I started moving the other 2 young females. To my 60 gallon community because for there safety, which they are so happy and showing colors that they didn’t before do to be chased and stressed out all the time, the other adult female is very fat and her belly is bright red and she’s doing the shiver dance for the male, I have seen him go into a cave with her but he’s still busy taking care of his other female and the 2 fry, should I remove the fry into a grow out tank so he will spawn with her? I set up a tank not knowing who I should put in there
You'll also find after a few different fry batches that the male will occasionally chase off the mother krib and care for the fry on his own. Then out of nowhere, he'll allow the female to come back and help care for the brood. Male kribs are extremely dominant fish. They make the decisions and the females have to just follow along. To this day, I've never seen a male kribensis actively choose to abandon his fry. They are real control freaks 😂.

Firstly, have they bred by now? Secondly, if not, are you certain that you have a male and female, and not 2 of the same sex? They are pretty easy to distinguish as adults. Thirdly, give them a varied diet. I feed my kribs frozen blocks of community tank mix, cichlid's delight, bloodworm, beef heart, and I occasionally give them a sprinkle of tropical flakes. Fourth and finally, do a 50% water change once a month. Most kribensis will spawn after a water change. I don't know why, because they come from lake Malawi, where the water depth is pretty constant, unlike small ponds, rivers, and tributaries like in SE Asia and the Amazon where fish breed in accordance with the monsoon seasons, and the influx of fresh water triggers their spawning instinct. Sometimes it just takes them a while to feel comfortable. Is your tank placed in an area with lots of foot traffic? Are there loud noises or vibrations that might be disturbing them? And it also helps to keep shoaling, dither fish like tetras, to make the kribs feel more secure from seeing other fish happy and swimming around (but I wouldn't recommend cardinals, neons, or rummy nose, or other tetras this size or smaller. Mine keep getting picked off. Get serpae tetras, pristella tetras, or red eye tetras. Or even Congo tetras if money isn't an issue). And are you sure you don't mean 20gal? 20 litres is awfully small as a permanent tank for kribs.
Sure hope so just got a bonded pair, waiting to see what they do. They have a little cave, a billion plants tons of food. Seemed to settle asoon as got in tank so I'm hopeful :) they have bred for previous owner so I am optimistic, wish me luck. I've bred random african cichlids in a bucket, danios by accident, I can probably handle this. Ironically enough I've never done live bearers.

Bred Kribensis 30+ years ago and they certainly didn’t bother with a cave. Just made a depression nest in the gravel and job done.

My kribs a few years ago absolutely were psycho's. They smashed everything that came near the eggs/fry. Moved them into their own aquarium in the end.

Just set up a pair had them 4 days male is extremely shy seems to only eat at night when it's dark. Would it be ok to add a pleco to the breeder tank?
If you want to breed them I wouldn't as the pleco will eat the eggs.
Loaches too! My khuli loaches AND pleco love fish eggs. I take/leave them out if I ever want babies.

Yes you can remove the fry to your other tank. Sound like a busy tank. 😊👍
