      Not necessary, no need to change violin size. I play a 4/4 violin with really small hands fine after working on it during lessons since my Professor also has small hands. Ask a teacher with small hands to help you. For me it was based on hand position adjust for small handed people.

  • @mxssjk5417

    As a person with extremely small hands, I could relate to most of this video. I have the most smallest hands out of my entire orchestra, and it’s hard to reach fourth finger so many times and shift properly when our teacher tells us to. For me it’s a huge disadvantage to have small hands, it’s so hard to do things properly. Especially since my pinky finger is also extremely small. Whenever I compare hand sizes with my friends, the pinky fingers are always a huge difference.

    the 4th finger vibrato is my life story

    • @richardjehl1455
      @richardjehl1455 5 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      It ceases to be difficult when the whole left hand technique has been rethought, and also the positions of fingers one respectively to each other have been corrected. A finger alone has no strength, because muscles concerning the fingers are mainly collective and not individual. Everything depends on the whole position of the hand. For example we should learn to let the fingers on the strings as much as possible. When all the fingers are on the strings, the 4th finger has itself a lot of strength, etc. How to acquire perfect technique is sadly not teached everywhere, even in high academies. I know this, because I have followed the cursus of the Royal Academy of Music in England, to find many years later, that I had not been teached the very fundamentals and necessary knowledge about technique every violonist should know...!!...A lot of teachers are soloists, but are truly very bad and incompetent at teaching. 95% of what I discovered as being basics for technique was found by myself alone and through thinking and reasoning, and sadly, not thanks to teachers. I can say that I had rather bad teachers...!

    • @music389xd4
      @music389xd4 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree with @Richard Jehl. It depends on hand position for 4th finger vibrato and what works best for your hand size.
      How it depends on hand position:
      Hand position example: Ex. For tenths, for a small hand you have to put pinky down first and then reach back with 1st finger, very hard though, will get callous on pinky and very large reach back, but it works. For large hands it's the other way around. (Octaves work fine first finger then 4th finger for either hand size but it takes a tiny reach and an understanding where hand goes as octaves and tenths go smaller distance as go up violin) So working with this should help. Ask a teacher who has small hands to help.
      Also try working with Flesch scales book, organizes this really well, along with sixths and thirds double stops for each scale.

      No need for that, dont worry about that. It worked for me eventually. It takes some practice, I thought about that too when I was 18, but then when I was informed during lessons at college about hand position with bow angle and body posture work and how that would work for small hands, it worked for me eventually. My Violin Lessons Professor also has small hands, so that helps a lot.

How can she do that without having used 4th finger vibrato 🤣. In major and prestigious competitions the smallest details count and they mean a lot. It's not like because you have small hands you cant do it. I have small hands and i find that using arm vibrato is helpful.

However, i can't use my 4th finger at all. I can't even get it on the c string without excessive work. I just use the 3rd

    I took violin because the cello was taller than me and the viola...I ain't gonna lie didn't know it existed. Even then I feel the pain. #7 is short arms problem, but it fits and is still a pain. 13 years later I find this video and scream to the heavens "IM NOT ALONE!!!!!"

      Yes it was #6,7 for me. I figured out how to fix the posture for that though, I realized it caused a posture problem after seeing this, during lessons and it helps/fits, and the lessons prof had small hands too. It was hard to work on though.

      Full sized violas don't exist. Violas are measured in inches, last time I checked.
