- Well, it was bound to happen. I knew it was just a matter of time before we had a return to home fail video and today is the day. Return to home failure isn't an option, right?
Well, I guess that's not a totally accurate description of events so let me lay it out here. We wanted to make a video with the coolest return to home flight ever and we were inspired by a video we saw from Gary Sumner. I'll link his video further down in the description so make sure to click on it and watch the video that inspired us to make this video...
Anyway, I had a spot all picked out in my head that was going to be magical and I knew this return to home flight wouldn't fail but I was wrong. Although there wasn't a crash or disaster, we unfortunately weren't able to capture the return to home magic with our DJI MIni 4 Pro (Dwight) that Gary was able to with his Mini 4 Pro (Faith). I'd say it was definitely a fair attempt and we did have some success. Judge for yourself if you think this is the coolest return to home flight ever and let us know in the comments what you thought.

Thanks, man! Did you jump over and check out Gary’s flight? His blew ours away. I think he proved how good the obstacle avoidance is at avoiding obstacles but I think the big thing we showed is how good it is at finding the opening to get out of danger. Lol.

You did a great test, but when I did it, I didn't aim between the trees, aimed FOR them, having faith in Faith to miss them, which she did with flying colors! (the red ones) 😉
You did a great test using waypoints too. I'll have to try that. But she may end the mission and pause, as Dwight did. Also, Dwight may have flown up and over the trees during RTH because he remembered going that way. How about trying it again, but staying down around the tree trunks and see if he follows the same route back, or takes the shortest route. Anyway, great, and funny video, including the comment from my wife, hahaha, and thanks again for sending your fans to my channel!
I gotta say I didn’t feel bad for stealing this idea. Hahaha. You totally deserved the credit for this man because your video was awesome! I know I’ve told you repeatedly how impressive that flight was and my bet is you’ll be doing it again and again in the future. I really don’t know how you could improve on your results. The nifty mode that was suggested is definitely something to try out though, eh?

On my Mini Pro 4 I have about 134 flights without a crash. I am very careful 😬

This is the main reason, that I would consider upgrading from my Mini 2 to the Mini 4 Pro. I'll wait though, until the Mini 5 Pro, Mini 6 Pro or whatever number comes in an makes the price dump on the Mini 4 Pro 🫰🏻
Lol I know, right? Now I admit our test wasn’t nearly as cool as Gary’s, but it was really cool seeing Dwight navigate through those trees. He found that opening quick and said, “I’m outta here!” Lol. I’d love to try this with the Mini 2 but I think it would end in horrible chaos and traumatic death.

I think this type of RTH flight can give anyone a lot more confidence that the Mini 4 will come home no matter what, eh? I think I was more impressed with how quick he found the opening than anything. I seriously remembered that group of trees being more dense than it was though. Gary didn't show or sat what his RTH Altitude setting was, and for me that's key. Now that Mini 4 Pro has omnidirectional, it can do advanced RTH, but if you set a high enough RTH altitude it will seek a path UO before seeking to fly home in Straight Line mode. In advanced, well, we saw what that should look like on Gary's video.
Oh that’s a good point, man. I had mine set to 164 I think like normal but maybe his was lower. I think a retest is in order. Lol. Also I saw a comment suggesting trying it in nifty mode so that would be a cool thing to add too
Another great video ... however you could try the same test but with "Nifty"mode selected then it should do your waypoints through trees.

That ability to navigate safely for a RTH through obstacles, or at least back track it own path from a sketchy situation, is reason enough to upgrade to the Mini 4 Pro.

Lol definitely! This was a really fun flight and what’s weird I wasn’t even nervous for the RTH flight. Ok, maybe a little. Lol. Gary’s flight was a whole lot better than ours but I’m not gonna let him out do us for long. I’ll be back out and try this again. Lol. Mini 4 is proving itself to be an awesome drone, eh?

Wow buddy. That optimal rth was certainly impressive and certainly nerve-wracking when Dwight found that gap and was close to those trees 😳 😱.
Lol I gotta say I was a little nervous on the RTH flight but this obstacle avoidance stuff is amazing. He found that gap and said “I’m outta here!” Lol

Kevin, can you set a RTH altitude of about 5 meters so it doesn't look for an opening in the treetops?
Hey, Ron! I hear what you’re saying and I’m totally going to try this again in the very near future with the height set as low as I can and maybe in nifty mode. I may be asking for trouble but we’ll see how it goes. Lol. I’m not 100% sure, but I think the lowest RTH I can set is 50 feet. At least that’s what the mini 2 allows. The mini 4 pro may be different. Awesome idea, man!!!
The reason why it keeps looking for a way up during the return to home is because the rth altitude is set to 167ft. The rth altitude needs to be set to just a few feet. Atleast that's how it was for me.
Hey man! Sorry for my delay in responding. You know how it is… lol. Anyway, I’m going to totally try this again in the future with RTH set to a low altitude and also in nifty mode. Did you do it with the Mini 4 pro or the Air 3?

Do you calibrate your IMU often? Also do you have to take the props off?
Awesome questions! With the Mini 4 pro, I seldom do an imu calibration but I do a compass calibration every so often. The Mini 2 is a totally different story. It seems like I have to do an imu calibration every other flight. lol. It’s a pain but it don’t take too long. Most times I forget though and just have to deal with some drift. lol. @@WeretheRoberts nice! I’ve had my mini 4 pro for about 3 weeks and did the first imu calibration like 2 days ago.. I think it lands more accurately and flys better lol but that might just be my imagination..

@@WeretheRoberts Yes I actually ordered the same budget drone again. I have a whole bunch of cheap drones.
The one that flew away was a Frankenstein thing I put together from two almost the same model. I already notice it didn't have quite the power for some reason to fight the wind. Although there was a of of wind. Even tornadoes got a warning to stay away.
@@WeretheRoberts I did come back a week later to check if it perhaps had taken the long RTH route around the globe. At that moment you hope it does when you see it disappear over the horizon.

Aaaaah good observation. Lol. Don’t give our secret spot away though. Next thing we know we’ll see a line of people out there flying drones testing their fate with these trees. Haha. Do you remember the campground that used to be there? I miss that place. It’s a good ways from our house but I thought it was the perfect spot for this test seeing how those trees are really well taken care of and there’s no low hanging small branches to knock into.
