You did a great test, but when I did it, I didn't aim between the trees, aimed FOR them, having faith in Faith to miss them, which she did with flying colors! (the red ones) 😉 You did a great test using waypoints too. I'll have to try that. But she may end the mission and pause, as Dwight did. Also, Dwight may have flown up and over the trees during RTH because he remembered going that way. How about trying it again, but staying down around the tree trunks and see if he follows the same route back, or takes the shortest route. Hey, Ron! I hear what you’re saying and I’m totally going to try this again in the very near future with the height set as low as I can and maybe in nifty mode. I may be asking for trouble but we’ll see how it goes. Lol. I’m not 100% sure, but I think the lowest RTH I can set is 50 feet. At least that’s what the mini 2 allows. The mini 4 pro may be different. Awesome idea, man!!!

Gary didn't show or sat what his RTH Altitude setting was, and for me that's key. Now that Mini 4 Pro has omnidirectional, it can do advanced RTH, but if you set a high enough RTH altitude it will seek a path UO before seeking to fly home in Straight Line mode. In advanced, well, we saw what that should look like on Gary's video.
Oh that’s a good point, man. I had mine set to 164 I think like normal but maybe his was lower. I think a retest is in order. Lol. Also I saw a comment suggesting trying it in nifty mode so that would be a cool thing to add too
The reason why it keeps looking for a way up during the return to home is because the rth altitude is set to 167ft. The rth altitude needs to be set to just a few feet. Atleast that's how it was for me.

That ability to navigate safely for a RTH through obstacles, or at least back track it own path from a sketchy situation, is reason enough to upgrade to the Mini 4 Pro.

Awesome questions! With the Mini 4 pro, I seldom do an imu calibration but I do a compass calibration every so often. The Mini 2 is a totally different story. It seems like I have to do an imu calibration every other flight. lol. It’s a pain but it don’t take too long. Most times I forget though and just have to deal with some drift. lol. We do have a few nicks in the hallway wall from “harrowing” experiences. Could you imagine how cool it would’ve been if he had a 160’ ceiling though? Lol

@@WeretheRoberts Trying now to be too specific. If I say trained first responder just not too trained on the 30T. I am just THRILLED it wasn't me. And how big a building would it have to be to have a 160 ceiling? I guess there are/were(?) some Omni Hotels that the central shaft went up further than 16 stories. And Jack Bauer did his thing in 2001-2010 so not surprised. DJI says 1 meter is all they guarantee. If you have an RTK top hat, you might get that down to the cm level. GNSS is fascinating stuff. And I am only just now scratching the surface it what is possible.

It’s a good ways from our house but I thought it was the perfect spot for this test seeing how those trees are really well taken care of and there’s no low hanging small branches to knock into. The one that flew away was a Frankenstein thing I put together from two almost the same model. I already notice it didn't have quite the power for some reason to fight the wind. Although there was a of of wind. Even tornadoes got a warning to stay away.

Do you calibrate your IMU often? Also do you have to take the props off?

Heard about a 30T that was being flown indoors by a newish pilot. Obstacle avoidance was off. He hit RTH with it set at 160'. Was NOT a happy result.

Aaaaah good observation. Lol. Don’t give our secret spot away though. Next thing we know we’ll see a line of people out there flying drones testing their fate with these trees. Haha. Do you remember the campground that used to be there? I miss that place. It’s a good ways from our house but I thought it was the perfect spot for this test seeing how those trees are really well taken care of and there’s no low hanging small branches to knock into. @@WeretheRoberts Yes I actually ordered the same budget drone again. I have a whole bunch of cheap drones.
The one that flew away was a Frankenstein thing I put together from two almost the same model. I already notice it didn't have quite the power for some reason to fight the wind. Although there was a of of wind. Even tornadoes got a warning to stay away.
@@WeretheRoberts I did come back a week later to check if it perhaps had taken the long RTH route around the globe. At that moment you hope it does when you see it disappear over the horizon.
