Gary stole my coffee money. Literally. I worked in the sociology department as a work-study student when he was an adjunct in Michigan (2016). He definitely had money problems. He had an apartment for a time, but I think he quickly lost it. He would find ways to hide in the university so he could sneak back into his office when the building was closed for the night to sleep and claim he was "in early" the next day. He would attend catered events at the school for free food, and he stole the coffee money my boss would give me in my desk drawer (but he left the damn change)! He was odd in behavior, often keeping his office door shut and laughing to himself (presumably watching videos). When he left the university, I helped clean his office, which was dirty and smelled of urine.

I REALLY appreciate you highlighting the problems that face academics. I was an adjunct professor for nearly a decade. After racking up student loans and struggling to find anything more than visiting positions, I gave up and went to nursing school. You spend all this time, money, and effort to get a PhD only to end up delivering pizza or grading A.P. exam essays. Piled higher and deeper. Students should be taught to teach themselves from a very early age. All the focus should be on how to learn, not what to learn (except for language, maths, and critical thinking, which should be the only "core" subjects).
The future of education no longer lies in massive, centralized institutions like universities. There should be physical places where learning facilitators are stationed and where students can go to get assistance, but they should be small and everywhere rather than large and few and far between. And the students should control their own education, nominating a project in a particular field, taking their proposal to a facilitator for approval, and off they go. Except for specific areas like medicine, which would need more centralized, highly regulated mechanisms for students to learn, this approach matches the real world better than current practice. The world has changed and education needs to change with it.

The US House of Cards was just a rip-off from the original much earlier UK version, where the character was called Francis Urquhart (F.U. geddit) He was played by Scottish actor Ian Richardson who was far more cold-blooded and sinister than Kevin Spacey. But not American and not really famous- so he is forgotten.

Thank you for sharing all this info regarding the life of college professors, I had no idea! It seems that the system is very unfair if we take into consideration the amount of education needed to be a professor. Furthermore, the fact that one cannot exercise free speech that includes unpopular opinions is just the opposite of what an academic environment should be.

This case could warn about the pitfalls if relying on "profiles." Some predictions based upon numerous observations are pretty much "ironclad;" lighting a match while standing in a pool of gasoline results in a predictable result. Human behaviours have to be viewed statistically. (Failing to become a firefighter is often seen in arsonists or so I've. heard.) Gary could be an "outlier" of serial arsonists.
The old saying "only fools represent themselves" in criminal proceedings would seem to have a corollary: only fools diagnoses themselves.

The profile of an arsonist expands a bit each time one is caught. This guy is clearly an arsonist plus. Universities have a very good knack for sidelining those who are too oddball. They like eccentric Prof's but not too eccentric. He tried to expand on the idea of the dope smoking professor in Animal House but he took it too far. He will be able to do his post grad while in jail.
