Finally caught up with this album as a Byrds fan since 1965. 'Fair and tender ladies' is one of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard - of course all these folk songs recycle lines from each other. Stunning album.
Just awesome, where was I when all this came out. Gene Clark and Carla Olsen were stunning together, apart, sideways, didn't matter - special talents. .
I am still amazed when I hear Gene Clark, and this beautiful album with Carla. My cousin, jumbo, worked as producer for Virgin records in the seventies. He visited me in Colorado and brought me Gene’s album White Light, another masterpiece, and that was my first listening. Louis
With all due respect to the Heavenly Choirs, after listening to Gene Clark sing, he could have given the angels singing lessons. He sounds so good with Carla
Long time Gene Clark fan here, but this is the first time I'd heard this song. Very nice! I was listening to his classic "For A Spanish Guitar" and this followed it.
+accordio13 thanks. Yes I know. I've heard many versions of gypsy Rider. but this is very pretty also , albeit melancholy. Which of course, is not uncommon for Gene
Gene is remembered more than u think! Pity he couldn’t keep it together and then again maybe that made such a great songwriter! Pity the original Byrds didn’t stay together!
The photograph of Gene smiling, sitting on the stairway next to Carla, as "Fair and Tender Ladies" ends, makes me happy and yet breaks my heart. Thank you for this. Beautiful. Well done. I'm glad to see images from Carla's solo work, too, and will seek it out. Peter, Paul, and Mary do a lovely version of "Fair and Tender Ladies," with very different lyrics, but both versions are equally wonderful.
theres a clip of Gene singing Silver Dagger with the New Christy Minstrels...i always think it was in the back of his mind when he wrote Silver Raven jim
I will never forget Gene Clark. I listen to him every day. Share his music with my 4 yr old granddaughter who loves the guitar song. "Spanish Guitar". Great taste she has.
...Fair and Tender Ladies... one of my very favourite tunes, even tho some other nice versions around...David Bromberg's being just one of them. thanks for the post. I agree, no real turkeys on the album.
His last gasp...but even with the echo, bad teeth, and trench ulcer, Gene and Carla just lay it out there. He never needed her more than here, and she never showed up with more
GENE CLARK...perhaps forgotten by the masses....but forever remembered and cherished by ..us...his ,fans..

The best there is. Never to be forgotten.
A masterpiece. And this is a beautiful, timeless track.
A songwriter par excellence. Died too young. But, didn't they all.
Such a gem of a song.

Disagree with the poster: this is a total masterpiece.
+Richard Hunter this song is (Fair and Tender Ladies), best version of this ever. Gypsy rider too, he's right about that.
Totally agree. Might not have been many after, but this is in the canon
I also agree one of Gene's best a total masterpiece. thanks Richard for saying that!
the music seems the Peter,Paul and Mary song Tiny Sparrow.
+Aurelio Gago trad song that is
Not a masterpiece?
What the hell?
His last gasp...but even with the echo, bad teeth, and trench ulcer, Gene and Carla just lay it out there. He never needed her more than here, and she never showed up with more
nO COMMENT ON THIS ONE,THANKS
Not my style of music. Lyrics taken from 'Dark Hollow'. I can't get into it.
